DL Sound & Lighting Productions Gives Butchart Gardens Great Sounds for the Summer with HARMAN’s JBL VTX Line Arrays and Crown I-Tech HD Amplifiers

IMG_2366VICTORIA, Canada — Providing a sound reinforcement system to accommodate the growing audiences for The Butchart Gardens’ “Summer at the Gardens” concert series, DL Sound & Lighting Productions of Victoria has supplied HARMAN’s JBL VTX V20 line array loudspeakers and Crown I-Tech 4x3500HD amplifiers for two months of live performances.

Located near Victoria on Vancouver Island, The Butchart Gardens is a collection of floral gardens that receives almost a million visitors each year. For the past 12 years, DL Sound has provided the sound reinforcement system for The Butchart Gardens’ famed “Summer at the Gardens” series. This year’s performers included world-famous acts including Colin James and Pink Martini, with performances scheduled every night from June 15 to August 30.

“This year, The Butchart Gardens wanted to up the ante as far as the draw of its performing artists went, so they also needed an audio system that would meets the needs of larger crowds,” said Doug Lyngard, President of DL Sound. “They also wanted to be able to fly the PA system instead of ground-stacking, which they have done in the past.”

“The venue lends itself to great presentation for an artist, and this is a great venue for acts coming through the Victoria area,” said Paul Gatien, Live Sound Engineer for The Butchart Gardens. “For Colin James, we had an audience of 5,000 people, which was one of our largest events.”

The system at The Butchart Gardens includes a left-right hang of six V20 line array loudspeakers per side, powered with Crown I-Tech 4x3500HD amplifiers. Gatien also uses JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ to monitor and control the system.

“I haven’t had any training on Performance Manager, so I’ve been figuring it out as we go, but it’s so intuitive that it’s been working great, and we’re doing really well with it,” Gatien noted.

When looking for a loudspeaker system for the summer season at The Butchart Gardens, Lyngard was attracted to the V20 for multiple reasons. “I really liked the sound of the V20, and the JBL name carries a solid reputation, so that also played a big factor,” he said. “Other factors like the easy rigging were important, as well as how easily the loudspeakers work with the Crown amplifiers and Performance Manager.”

“We’re really happy with the system,” Gatien added. “We do everything from symphony performances and jazz to classic rock and blues, and the VTX loudspeakers and Crown I-Tech HD amplifiers handle it all very well.”

While Summer at the Gardens provided the impetus for DL Sound to purchase the JBL VTX system, the company has big plans for it once the summer is over. “The V20 and I-Tech 4x3500HD raise our ability to compete for larger projects,” Lyngard said. “Now we’ll be able to provide sound for all the venues on Vancouver Island and in the Vancouver area and be able to fill most riders as well.”

DJ Ravidrums Performs At Telemundo’s Third Annual Premios Tu Mundo Show With HARMAN’s AKG Microphones

AKG_DJRavidrumsMIAMI, Florida – Dubbed the ‘One-Man Wrecking Machine’, DJ/drummer DJ Ravidrums (Jakhotia) recently performed at the Telemundo’s Third Annual Premios Tu Mundo (Your World) Awards in Miami’s American Airlines Arena, which featured top Latin American and Spanish artists such as Yandel, Lucero, Juanes, Los Tucanes de Tijuana and David Bisbal. Having developed a transparent touchscreen DJ interface in collaboration with Virtual DJ Software—the Dream Screen 3000—the unique talents of this DJ/drummer were delivered to the audience with HARMAN’s AKG microphones.

Jakhotia combines his drumming skills with an interest in modern DJ applications, such as digital turntables. During the primetime show, his setup featured the Dream Screen 3000 with customized surrounding drums, situated on a separate platform in front of the main stage.

Jakhotia used 10 AKG C518M microphones on all the tom drums, two AKG C451B microphones on the overheads and an AKG D40 microphone on the snare.

“The show was about big giant Brazilian Samba sounds, consisting of percussion, electronics and proper acoustics,” said Jakhotia. “Getting the acoustics to meet the electronics takes a lot of work, but the AKG C518 microphones helped me do all that and generate a more powerful presence.”

As Jakhotia delivered an audiovisual spectacle in the middle of the arena, the AKG microphones held their own and delivered more than just world-class sound. “In this age it’s all about ease of use and reliability, which these microphones definitely have,” Jakhotia said. “Even after hitting them with my drumsticks many times, they never fail.”

In addition to the Awards event, he also uses an AKG D12 microphone for the kick drum for some shows, and AKG C414 microphones at his home studio.

“I just love the C414’s, as they’ve always been legendary and made me fall in love with AKG ever since I was a kid,” said Jakhotia. “The punch and clarity is there, making the electronics sound beefy and the acoustics sound complete. It’s challenging but thanks to AKG, I can always find the right balance.”

James Blunt Chooses HARMAN’s Martin Professional to bring his “Moon Landing” World Tour to Life

MartinPro_JamesBluntAARHUS, Denmark — James Blunt, alongside his Production Designer Paul Normandale and Lighting Director Glen Johnson, are on the road for another tour with HARMAN’s Martin Professional lighting fixtures, including 41 MAC Auras, 32 MAC Viper Profiles, six MAC Viper AirFXs and two AF1 Fans.

Blunt released his newest album in October of 2013 entitled ‘Moon Landing’, which features an emotional and powerful side to the singer-songwriter we have not yet seen. The album is personal and intimate, reflecting back to where Blunt got his start and where he is now.

“We have worked with James Blunt since 2005, this is our fourth world tour with him, and all James’ shows have been dominated by Martin moving lights,” Said Johnson. “This is the largest production we have taken out on the road thus far.”

The theme of the tour is the romanticism and loneliness of the moon landings. For Normandale, this was a fun challenge. “My thoughts and vision with the lighting design were inspired by the lunar landing theme. That is where the idea of landing craft risers and panorama of the lunar planet LED screen came from,” explained Normandale.

“The Viper Profile has great color speed for snap chase,” said Normandale. “The optics and reliability of the fixture over this past year has been staggering. I don’t think we have swapped even one Martin fixture yet. The Viper Profiles have become the standard profile workhorse, with great gobo options and a fantastic color speed on the color wheel.”

“The MAC Viper AirFX has great zoom optics,” said Johnson. “It’s a great all-around fixture. I could do the whole show just with these.”

“I love the Viper Air FXBeams,” said Johnson. “They have become a great addition to the Martin range and filled a gap that Martin had. They work really well and have produced some fantastic aerial looks over the audience. The Aura I think I can say is Normandale’s favorite LED wash fixture as they seem to feature on nearly everything he does.”

The Moon Landing World Tour started in December 2013 in China and will run until spring 2015, making its way through North America, Europe, Africa and South America.

CRAS and HARMAN’s JBL Professional M2 Master Reference Monitors Serve Up A Feast for the Ears At 2014 PotLuckCon Audio Conference

TUCSON, Arizona — Calling itself “the ultimate weekend of audio recording geekery,” the 2014 PotLuckCon Audio Conference brought recording industry professionals together for a healthy serving of workshops, seminars, recording sessions and demos from the best and brightest in the pro audio industry. A key participant was the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences (CRAS), which hosted a demo room featuring HARMAN JBL’s flagship M2 Master Reference Monitor loudspeakers. The CRAS mobile broadcast unit was also on hand, which rolled in equipped with JBL LSR6325P studio monitors and a Studer Vista 5 digital mixing console.

CRAS is a technical school providing instruction in audio recording, engineering and production. Its two locations in Tempe and Gilbert, Arizona teach students the skills they need to start their career in the day they graduate.

The JBL M2 Master Reference Monitor is a 2-way powered large-format loudspeaker designed to set new standards for sonic accuracy and dynamic range in professional monitoring environments. It’s incredibly revealing without ever sounding clinical or harsh and its tonal balance and spatiality remain intact over a wide listening area.”

Also at PotLuckCon, Andrew Scheps, producer, mix engineer and principal of Tonequake Records, delivered a poignant presentation titled “Lost In Translation,” which examined the effect of low-resolution digital delivery on the emotional impact of recorded music. Sponsored by the Recording Academy® Producers and Engineers Wing®, and with JBL M2 Master Reference Monitors as the playback system, the crowd experienced Scheps’ dramatic A/B comparison of high and low-resolution file formats.

HARMAN Professional’s JBL and Crown Take The Pohoda Music Festival to New Heights

TRENCIN, Slovakia — The Pohoda Music Festival is one of the biggest events in Slovakia, and this summer’s was no exception. Electronic music legends Kraftwerk headlined the festival, which also featured Tricky, Mogwai, Tame Impala, Suede, Goldfrapp and many others. The 30,000 concertgoers who attended the festival at Trencin Airport were treated to a diverse range of electronic, techno, hip hop, rock and other musical styles – and the best sound ever in the festival’s 17-year history, thanks to a HARMAN JBL VTX and Crown audio system supplied by Slovakian sound contractor Audio Line (www.audio-line.sk).

Audio Line founding member Ladislav Demcak had been a long-time JBL user and before the start of last year’s summer touring season made the decision to make the move to JBL’s top of the line VTX Series line arrays after spending time in Belgium evaluating a VTX system with JBL’s Paul Bauman and “Big” Mick Hughes, front of house engineer for Metallica. “We could hear straight away that this was a very good system,” said Demcak. “I knew I had to have it – once I’d heard it I could never go back.” Demcak and his crew gave the VTX line arrays an “intense induction” with their existing Crown I-Tech HD inventory in 2013 over the course of some of Slovakia’s leading festivals including the Dobry Festival, Topfest, Terchovsky Budzogan, Lodenica and last year’s Pohoda Music Festival.

For this year’s event Audio Line equipped the Pohoda Music Festival’s main stage with two hangs of 14 VTX V25 fullsize line array elements and 10 S28 dual-18-inch suspendable subwoofers on either side of the stage with 12 additional G28 subs stacked on the ground in a cardioid array in front of the stage. Eight V25s provided out fill on each side of the stage and a pair of V25s were employed as near-fill loudspeakers. The loudspeakers were all driven by eight Crown VRack amplifier systems that each housed three of Crown’s I-Tech 12000HD amplifiers. In addition to the main stage, Audio Line furnished the sound reinforcement systems for four of the other seven stages at the festival.

“Pohoda is the one festival where the sound quality had to be second to none,” Demcak pointed out. “Especially considering that Kraftwerk was headlining! We wanted the sound to be perfect.” Demcak applied all the experience and knowledge gained in more than a year of using VTX outdoors to tweak the system to maximum performance. One major advantage Demack and his team had over last year was that they used the latest version of JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ software and VTX preset tunings, which enabled them to really dial in the interface between the VTX arrays and Crown amps and fine-tune a greater number of system parameters.

Demcak noted that the Pohoda Music Festival’s production team were happy to have JBL VTX and Crown there once again. “I also received extremely positive feedback from each band. The rig sounded more like the world’s biggest and clearest high-end audio system than a typical live sound system – everybody remarked that the sound was state of the art and the best they’d ever heard.”

Hotel Congress Re-designs Its Club With HARMAN Professional Audio System

TUCSON, Arizona – Famous for being the hotel where American bank robber John Dillinger was captured in 1934, the Hotel Congress is an extraordinary location that, in addition to a high-end hotel, has hosted a variety of events and banquets since its construction in 1919. Its main nightlife property, Club Congress, recently received a massive overhaul of its sound infrastructure with HARMAN’s Soundcraft, JBL and Crown systems, leading to a drastic improvement in its audio offerings.

The venue is a small 45 x 40-foot live music venue that is host to many national touring acts and local dance nights. To ensure optimal sound coverage for the stage and audience, the most efficient and powerful loudspeakers from JBL were chosen to provide the best entertainment experience that Club Congress has ever witnessed.

The output system consists of three JBL VRX932LAP powered Constant Curvature loudspeakers per side, two STX828 dual 18-inch subwoofers, six SRX712M stage monitors, one PRX718XLF subwoofer and one JBL PRX715 loudspeaker. The system is powered with two Crown XTi 6002 amplifiers, one Crown I-Tech 4x3500HD and one I-Tech 9000HD amplifier. Sound is further enhanced by a dbx Driverack PA2 for additional processing power. While also responsible for the integration of the new HARMAN audio solution, Head Audio Engineer Dana Fehr wanted a complete system that is easy to use and void of technical problems.

Thus, Fehr also chose the Si Performer 3 to provide guest DJs and fill-in staff with easy workflow and extensive onboard features to take the music at Club Congress to the next level. “The Si Performer 3 was an immense upgrade in terms of sound quality and user-friendliness, even before we installed the new loudspeakers,” said Fehr, speaking from prior experience with Soundcraft consoles during his 20 years as an audio engineer in live and recording sound. “Having used Vi Series consoles on large-scale events, I have come to appreciate the reliable manufacturing of Soundcraft boards, and their intuitive design and accessibility for operators of all skill levels. Unlike some of the other brands, Soundcraft consoles sound great and their file management is easy to use.”

Features like Soundcraft FaderGlow™ make the console easy to operate, while also making it especially suitable for dark club environments, where mood and lighting can be as essential as the music itself. For a venue as small as this live music venue, the console’s form factor means it occupies minimum real estate on the dance floor. Coupled with the JBL VRX932LAP loudspeakers, the new HARMAN system delivers incredible power to all areas of the room.

City College of San Francisco Stays on the Cutting Edge of Instruction with Hitachi Projectors

San Francisco, California, September 23, 2014 – Looking to bolster its technology offerings for its main campus, the City College of San Francisco recently installed multiple Hitachi projectors of various models, highlighted by the CP-AW312WN ultra short throw projector. In addition, the College now features the Hitachi CP-WX8255, CP-WX8240 and CP-X3030WN models. Thanks to their reliability and ease of use, the Hitachi projectors have met and exceeded the needs of the College’s faculty, staff and students.

The City College of San Francisco’s main campus has 11 buildings with classrooms and nine other “learning centers” that range in variety from classrooms at the San Francisco International Airport to a 14-story building in San Francisco’s Financial District that serves approximately 70,000 students. To date, the projectors have been installed in lecture halls, classrooms, and group study rooms. However, the college has a goal of installing projectors in every classroom to aid instruction and student presentations. Faculty, students and staff will be operating the projectors through a wall-mounted “PIXIE” control panel.

Jerome Fong, audiovisual technician for the City College of San Francisco, assisted in the selection, purchase and installation of the projectors. He also oversees maintenance and management of the equipment. “There is a need to keep up with technology and it is not practical to support legacy AV equipment anymore,” Mr. Fong said. “The upgrade with Hitachi projectors has been very successful and we are looking forward to adding more units in the future. “

JVC Launches New Waterproof, Secure-Fit Sports Headphones

WAYNE, NJ, September 18, 2014 – Music is the perfect workout partner and for those who want to liven up their workout, JVC has four new sports headphones that include waterproof and washable options, all designed to stay in place during the most vigorous sports or workout activities.

The four new models include two in the JVC Gumy Sport line and two in the Extreme Fitness line. The new Gumy Sport headphones – the HA-EN10 and HA-ENR15 – feature a Nozzle Fit earpiece made of soft silicone and a unique shape that provides a comfortable and secure fit so they won’t fall out during exercise. Both Gumy Sport models are sweatproof with IPX2 water ingress protection rating, which means they can be used during light rainfall. The 3.3-foot cable has an iPhone compatible plug, and small and medium earpieces are included to ensure the best fit. The HA-ENR15 includes an in-line remote control and microphone for use with iPod, iPhone, iPad, Android and Blackberry devices. Both Gumy Sport models come in a choice of four color combinations – blue/black, black/red, pink/violet and white/orange.

The new JVC HA-ETX30 and HA-ETR40 Extreme Fitness headphones feature JVC’s new Pivot Motion Fit, a soft rubber rotating hook that fits within the part of the ear just above the ear canal to provide an ultra-secure yet very comfortable fit. To tailor the fit to each user, the hook rotates and its position can easily be adjusted while wearing the earpiece. The Extreme Fitness headphones are IPX5/IPX7 rated, so there’s rarely any need to worry if caught out in a rain storm, and they can be safely washed, either by rinsing under running water or rinsed briefly in a basin of water. The 3.94-foot cord has a gold-plated iPhone compatible plug, and each headphone comes with small, medium and large earpieces and a cable clip to hold the cable in place. The HA-ETR40 includes additional open-type earpieces that allow ambient sounds to be heard, such as approaching traffic, for safety. It also features a splash-proof in-line remote control and microphone on a 1.97-foot cable plus a 1.97-foot extension cord.

The HA-ETX30 is available in four color combinations – blue/yellow, black/green, pink/blue and white/orange. The HA-ETR40 comes in gun metallic/black and red/black.
