Masque Sound Wraps Up Another Season at The Muny

America’s Oldest and Largest Outdoor Musical Theater Conclude 94th Season

ST. LOUIS, MO, AUGUST 16, 2012—When The Muny kicked off its 2012 musical theater season, Masque Sound, a leading theatrical sound reinforcement, installation and design company, was backstage, providing audio equipment and services for the St. Louis institution.

Recently concluding its 94th season, The Muny is America’s largest and oldest outdoor musical theater, having been a St. Louis tradition since 1919. Masque Sound has been providing AV equipment and services to The Muny for seven years and has enjoyed a long relationship with the organization.

“The Muny is one of the most challenging and unique projects we work on all year,” says Gary Stocker, director of development, Masque Sound. “With a rapid integration schedule, we do not have room for any delays or setbacks. Masque Sound’s ability to provide audio equipment, services and solutions under such a tight timeline is a testament to our expertise.”

In addition, because the speakers, consoles, cables and all usable elements are exposed to St. Louis’ unpredictable and often stormy summer weather, it is essential that Masque Sound helps the Muny staff protect the gear. These conditions, combined with The Muny’s outdoor exposure to the inclement summer weather, make equipment selection and preparation extremely important.

“We can always rely on Masque Sound to provide us with audio solutions that will continue to enhance the audience experience at The Muny,” says David Shapiro, Muny’s resident sound designer. “When Masque recommended we incorporate a HARMAN Studer digital console into our equipment, it was a game changer. Time is at a premium and the Studer console not only allows sound checks to move a lot quicker, it also proves to be extremely durable. ”

The Muny produces all of its musicals in the summer season and operates every year from mid-June to mid-August. During the winter, a full-time staff of less than 20 people prepare for the approaching summer season. During the season itself, the summer staff expands to include more than 700 people in various positions. The outdoor amphitheater seats 11,000 people, with approximately 1,500 free seats in the last nine rows available on a first-come, first-served basis.

“When audio systems are used outdoors, it’s not a matter of if there will be a problem but when,” says Jason Krueger, Muny sound designer. “With our unyielding performance schedule, we cannot afford to be without equipment for an extended period of time. Masque Sound’s ability to repair or replace the equipment within a 24-hour time period is a huge benefit to us. It’s a first-class operation all the way, with resources and staff expertise that is second to none.”

Thoroughly Modern Millie was the first of seven shows this summer at The Muny. Chicago, Aladdin, Dreamgirls, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Pirates! (or, Gilbert & Sullivan Plunder’d) and The King and I rounded out the rest of the summer’s scheduled plays.

Auralex Helps Increase Speech Intelligibility at New Life Community Church

OXNARD, CA, FEBRUARY 8, 2012 – Auralex Acoustics, Inc., the industry leader in innovative sound control solutions, is a critical element in the overall sound design at New Life Community Church in Oxnard, California. The church features custom Auralex ELiTE ProPanels and ProBaffles to help absorb additional sound energy and add aesthetic visual appeal throughout its cavernous interior, with the main goal of making speech intelligibility clearer and only slightly secondary goal of better music clarity

Richard Rutherford of Rutherford Design was posed to re-purpose the 50,000 square foot industrial space, which would be the new home for New Life Community Church. Since Rutherford was involved in the design process, before the walls were even up. This enabled him to suggest some basic acoustical layouts throughout the space to help with speech intelligibility. The two main walls are not parallel and the entrance hallway and doorways are slightly offset, even though they look symmetrical. Also, the rear main wall is not a straight line; it actually curves. These small architectural details, in terms of non-parallel walls and entrances, naturally help to redirect reflections and sound energy.

“In a house of worship, I’m concerned more with the peripheral seats and the back half of the room,” says Rutherford. “To communicate with those people intimately, the spoken word in this kind of environment needs a high level of intelligibility. In a space like this, regardless of the budget or loudness of the audio system, if you have a six-, seven- or eight-second overall reverb time, there’s just no way it’s going to be intelligible.”

Rutherford installed 51 custom ELiTE ProPanels (4ft x 8ft x 2in) on the walls around the 900-seat sanctuary worship area. ELiTE ProPanels are fabric-covered, acoustic-absorptive panels designed to absorb slap and flutter echoes, providing a more pleasing and accurate listening environment. Rutherford also specified 21 custom ProBaffles (4ft x 20ft x 2in), which were mounted above the light fixture’s line of sight and hang from the ceiling. ProBaffles are absorptive panels wrapped in a lightweight material and designed to be hung vertically from the ceilings in commercial facilities. The panels have a fiberglass core and carry a Class-A fire rating. The edges and corners are square and non-hardened.

“The layout of the ceiling gave us an opportunity to do a fairly symmetrical array of hanging flags to baffle the low-mid frequencies getting toward the back of the room,” continues Rutherford. “After the installation of the Auralex products, the room now sits at about a second-and-a-half reverb, and it sounds great, regardless of where you are sitting in the sanctuary.”

The installation also features several L-ACOUSTICS loudspeakers, Allen & Health front-of-house monitor/mix equipment, as well as several video and lighting products rounding out the acoustic treatment from Auralex for a multi-faceted, complete audio/video system.

Auralex Highlights New Studiofoam Wave Panels at the 2012 NAMM Show

Studiofoam Wave Panels Offer Aesthetically Pleasing Visuals, Mid- and High- Frequency Sound Solution

ANAHEIM, CA, JANUARY 20, 2012 — Auralex Acoustics, Inc., the industry leader in innovative sound control solutions, showcases its new Studiofoam Wave panels at the 2012 NAMM Show (Hall A, Booth 6798).

Auralex’s new Studiofoam Wave is 2 ft. x 2 ft. and is between 1 to 3 in. thick due to the wave design of the panel. Providing varying levels of thickness, Studiofoam Wave can help control unwanted mid- or high-frequency reflections and standing waves in a variety of applications, such as vocal booths, control rooms, live rooms, rehearsal spaces and project studios. These panels will clean up the sound in any room and are a cost-effective alternative to fiberglass cloth-covered panels.

The panels are available in charcoal coloring and are made from Auralex’s melamine-free formula, which won’t crumble with age. The new “wave” profile opens up many different design possibilities and can add a contemporary aesthetic to any space.

“The Studiofoam Wave is a reinvention of the best-selling Studiofoam line, giving our customers another alternative to our more traditional panels,” says Mike Buratto, acoustical engineer at Auralex Acoustics. “These are a great way to create a totally different vibe in your space, while maintaining the acoustic integrity that Auralex is known for.”

Studiofoam Wave panels can be used to help improve common acoustical issues such as excessive reverberation and flutter echo in small- to medium-sized areas and can be used with common mechanical fasteners such as t-pins, finish nails and tacks, as well as Auralex Foamtak or Tubetak for easy, removable installation.
