First Annual Art Awards

Unlimited Visibility Lighting Design (UVLD) teamed with technical producers production glue to deliver an understated look for a one-of-a-kind event: the Guggenheim Museum’s First Annual Art Awards.

Devised by conceptual artist Rob Pruitt to be a performance-based artwork modeled after Hollywood awards ceremonies, the Art Awards honored artists and curators in nine categories and presented two lifetime achievement awards. The Delusional Downtown Divas satire group emcee’d and appeared in videos interspersed with presentations by celebrities who included Julianne Moore, Kylie Minogue and James Franco.

The gala evening’s event sponsor was the Calvin Klein, Inc; the awards acted as a fundraiser for the Solomon R. Scharff Weisberg Opens Up Pandoras Box for “Memphis: The Musical?

When “Memphis: The Musical” opened on Broadway October 19 at the Shubert Theatre, the scenic projection design was supported by innovative technology provided by Scharff Weisberg, Inc. (SWI). SWI provided two Christie Roadster HD18K 1080 HD 18,000-lumen 3-chip DLP digital projectors plus two Coolux Pandoras Box Media Server PROs, two Coolux MediaManager PRO machines, and a Coolux Widget Designer PRO advanced control surface-creation framework.

“Memphis” takes place in Tennessee during the 1950s and the story revolves around a white R & B DJ who falls in love with a black singer he has introduced to his audience. The show depicts the changing society of the time and captures the decade’s R&B, gospel, and early rock ‘n roll sounds with a score by Bon Jovi keyboardist David Bryan.

Coemar Infinity Fixtures Go On Tour With “Star Wars: In Concert”

It’s only fitting that Coemar Infinity Wash XL fixtures are playing a key role in “Star Wars: In Concert,” a new touring production based on George Lucas’s infinitely entertaining “Star Wars” franchise. Show Director and designer Steve Cohen is deploying 42 Infinitys as the main wash lights for the show’s 86-piece symphony orchestra, according to Cohen’s associate production designer, Seth Jackson.

A unique multimedia event featuring music from all six of John Williams’s “Star Wars” scores, “Star Wars: In Concert” began its worldwide tour October 1 in Anaheim, California. It features a full symphony orchestra and choir accompanied by a montage of specially-edited footage to fit each theme. The montage is displayed on a three-story tall, HD LED screen and narrated by Anthony Daniels, the actor who portrayed C-3PO in all of the “Star Wars” films. Original movie more

Vibrant Design’s Christopher Landy Lights Up 15th Annual “Comics Come Home? Benefit Hosted by Denis Leary

Production designer Tom Lenz of 513 invited Christopher Landy of Brooklyn-based Vibrant Design LLC to have fun for a good cause when he suggested the lighting designer work on America’s longest-running comedy benefit, “Comics Come Home,” which marked its 15th anniversary at Boston University’s Agganis Arena on November 7.

Hosted by Denis Leary, the comedy show benefits The Cam Neely Foundation for Cancer Care and The Neely Cancer Fund. This year’s performers included Bill Burr, Lenny Clarke, Adam Ferrara, Kenny Rogerson, Jeffrey Ross, Jimmy Fallon, Whitney Cummings, and Tony V.

“Tom (Lenz) has been production designer for ‘Comics Come Home’ for the last four or five years,” says Landy. “Tom and I have been doing more and more shows with a strong emphasis on LED screens with content being a strong design element.”
