Scharff Weisberg helped the iconic Guggenheim Museum celebrate its 50th anniversary by providing support for several key events, including artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s “Levels of Nothingness.”

Part of the museum’s Works & Process series, the commissioned performance installation was inspired by Kandinsky’s opera, The Yellow Sound. In “Levels of Nothingness,” the pitch, rhythm and content of the spoken word provides the control mechanism for an interactive light performance using moving light fixtures normally found on a rock concert stage. Scharff Weisberg supplied 40 VARI*LITE VL3000 spots for the 35-minute show which enjoyed a limited run in the Peter B. Lewis Theater. more

Coemar Lights Take Center Stage at “VH1 Hip Hop Honors?

Coemar lighting fixtures lent an elegant, theatrical look to the “VH1 Hip Hop Honors 2009,” a sophisticated yet fun event that’s been called the Kennedy Center Honors for the hip hop industry. Lighting designer Tom Kenny employed an array of Coemar Infinity Wash XLS and Infinity ACL S moving heads as well as ParLite LEDs, supplied by Atomic Lighting, to showcase hip hop’s biggest luminaries.

The sixth annual “Hip Hop Honors” was taped at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Howard Gilman Opera House where Tracy Morgan hosted for the third consecutive year sharing the stage with Eminem, Ludacris, Mary J. Blige, Method Man, Public Enemy, Ja Rule, DMX, Redman, and Ashanti. more

Tinc Provides Production Design and Tech Management for M.Y.R.A Entertainment’s “One After,? Audiovisual Art Installation Marking World Day Against the Death Penalty

Tinc Design & Productions provided complete production design and technical management for the New York premiere of the audiovisual art installation, “One After,” an innovative look at the Texas death penalty at the Openhouse Gallery. Tinc was responsible for the design of the event’s gallery space and its video and lighting elements with Lance Darcy acting as production designer and Ryan Kirk production manager.

Created and directed by Margarethe Baillou and produced by Baillou and Madeline S. McEneney, “One After” consists of 17 one-minute films depicting Texas nature between Independence Day and Thanksgiving 2008 during the hours of every execution that occurred in the state in those months. “We set aside all textual and verbal narration for this work,” says Ms. Baillou, a German filmmaker based in New York. more

Christie Projectors Deliver Winning Performance at 61st Primetime Emmy Awards Show

Los Angeles-based audio visual rental and staging company, American Hi Definition, Inc., supported the 61st Primetime Emmy(r) Awards live telecast from the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE with six Christie Roadster HD18K projectors. American Hi Definition, Inc. is a veteran of previous Emmy telecasts and chose Christie projectors once again for the prominent television and media awards show.

The star-studded audience and home viewers feasted their eyes on a glittering set that consisted of two large rear-projection screens set back on the stage and raised on an upper tier. The six Christie Roadster HD18K projectors fed various graphic elements, ranging from a collage of network logos and stylized views of the elegant Emmy Statuette to video clips of nominees on a 13.5 x 24-foot screen at camera left and a 13.5 x 48-foot primary screen at camera right. more

Stage Research Introduces RF Guru Wireless Microphone Application

Stage Research is pleased to announce the release of RF Guru, a coordination tool targeted to anyone dealing with wireless microphones. RF Guru is designed to find the best combination of wireless microphone frequencies to be used at a venue and alleviate intermod (i.e., interference) problems. It calculates based on existing microphones, area TV stations, user-entered known bad frequencies and even mic data from nearby neighboring venues.

RF Guru was previewed in August at the successful launch of Stage Research’s Sound 411, a two-day informational event designed to bring together sound professionals and students in New York City with leaders in the sound hardware and software industries. “The new application was an immediate hit,” notes Carlton Guc, cofounder of Stage Research. “People told us RF Guru is what they’ve been waiting for.” more

While MTV’s Video Music Awards (VMAs) lit up the TV screens of millions of households on September 13, Coemar lighting fixtures were dazzling guests attending the live show at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall. Lighting designer Tom Kenny utilized an extensive package of Coemar Infinity Wash XLs, Infinity ACLs and ParLite LEDs provided by Scharff Weisberg Lighting for the event.

“An awards show of that size and pressure is like going into battle in the trenches,” Kenny reports. “In New York everybody thinks they know how to be the mayor, the president of the United States and the lighting designer of the VMAs. You just have to hold your ground and do your show.” more

Life’s a beach, especially during New York City Fashion Week 2010 when award-winning designer Scott Sternberg unveiled his Band of Outsiders and women’s Boy by Band of Outsiders spring and summer collections on a Malibu-inspired set with production support by Tinc Design & Productions.

Tinc furnished lighting, rigging, hair and makeup services for the show, which reunited Tinc production manager Ryan Kirk with lighting designer Seth Bernstein. They previously partnered on the Band of Outsiders fall collection presented during Fashion Week last March. more
