Remembering PreSonus CTO Bob Tudor

Baton Rouge, LA – May 23, 2014...PreSonus sadly announced today the passing of Bob Tudor, the company’s widely admired, respected, and beloved Chief Technology Officer.

A legend in the pro audio/MI industry, Tudor followed a long and winding road to PreSonus. A child prodigy, he studied piano with Arthur Rubinstein protégé and Julliard fellow Josephine Bacher. Tudor later studied electrical engineering at the prestigious Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute but switched to the Berklee College of Music, where he studied film scoring, jazz, and music production. He cofounded Boston’s Metropolis recording studio and recorded such well-known acts as Peter Wolf/J.Geils Band, Extreme, Aime Mann, New Kids on the Block, and Bobby Brown. He also played keyboards and acoustic piano on numerous records as a studio musician and remixed “Cradle of Love” for Billy Idol.

Fascinated with how gear worked, Bob eventually combined his passions for music and engineering, creating a long list of companies, products, and technologies. As one of the pioneers at Mackie Designs, he created the company’s line of digital mixers, hard-disk recorders, and control surfaces. After leaving Mackie, he founded SaneWave, where he developed products for a wide assortment of pro audio manufacturers.

Overall, Tudor and the SaneWave team had designed more than 100 products, including such hits as the TASCAM US-2400 Control Surface and X-48 Hard Disk Multitrack Audio Recorder, Electro-Voice DC-1 Speaker Processor, M-Audio ProjectMix, and Lexicon MX-500 FX Processor. He did additional projects for QSC, Samson, Shure, Alesis, Gibson, Fender, and many others. One of SaneWave’s best clients was PreSonus, for which he helped define and design the FaderPort and the StudioLive digital-mixer line. That led to his decision to join the company full time in 2008. His products have garnered five TEC Awards, five MIPA Awards, and numerous other awards. As Tudor put it, “I enjoy developing disruptive products”—that is, innovative products that can potentially shake up and energize the market.

As Chief Technology Officer, Tudor oversaw all PreSonus advanced development activities and evaluated and implemented emerging technologies that have been utilized in many of the companies most successful products. Along with PreSonus CSO Jim Odom, he developed the strategic direction of the company’s innovative products and technologies.

Said Jim Mack, PreSonus CEO, “Anyone who has ever had the pleasure of working with Bob, or even interacting with him at events or trade shows, was likely touched by his energy, enthusiasm, and passion for technology—and specifically, technology that allowed people to make better music. He was always fascinated with what could be done and was never really deterred by challenges or technical hurdles. He not only made things that no one else could see or do possible, he made them look easy. We have not only lost a truly amazing engineer but a very dear friend to so many people in this industry.”

Terminal One at Spain’s Valencia Airport Sounds the All Clear with ICONYX

Valencia, Spain – May 2014… Designing and installing a sound reinforcement system for an airport terminal can be one of the most challenging assignments an installed sound company can take on. Typically large, high ceiling structures with lots of glass and reflective fixtures, these buildings are designed primarily for efficient distribution of passengers as opposed to sound waves. Particularly at peak travel times, the high levels of ambient noise can easily mask vital announcements such as departure times and gate information.

With this in mind, airport officials in Valencia, Spain approached Madrid-based installed sound company Ruybesa, an engineering and projects company specializing in turnkey solutions for installed sound environments, regarding designing and installing a new sound reinforcement system in Terminal 1 of the Valencia airport.

The Valencia airport is one of Spain’s busiest, with over 500,000 travellers passing through the terminal in 2013. Terminal 1 is the airport’s main terminal, handling the bulk of passenger traffic in and out of Valencia. The terminal spans three floors, with 60 desks and four aerobridges to access its 14 boarding gates.

“The project involved covering the sound of a large space that normally has a high background noise during peak times,” explained Diego Velázquez, sales and marketing manager for LDA Audio Tech, PA/VA manufacturer and Renkus-Heinz partner in Spain. “To address the noise problems, the Renkus-Heinz ICONYX IC7 loudspeakers were chosen.”

The Renkus Heinz ICONYX IC7 mechanically steerable line array systems employ the same triple-tweeter technology and fully natural sound reproduction as their digitally steered brethren. The IC7’s fixed acoustical beam is ideal for side fill, front fill, and short throw applications – such as airport terminals – that don’t demand programmable control. Internal passive electronics control the frequency and phase response of each driver, working together to create a uniform 30-degree beam.

“There are three IC7 ICONYX Systems installed in Terminal 1 at about 10m high and with a separation between them of 25m,” said Velázquez. “The IC7s are aimed face down to the lobby, pointing directly to the area with the highest influx of people.”

The results have pleased Valencia airport officials. “The ICONYX systems provide even sound pressure levels and the high intelligibility that is vital for delivering important information to the public, “ said Velázquez. “Flight announcements are clear, and passengers have the assurance that they can understand the message despite the background noise.”

ICONYX loudspeakers are a popular choice for sound contractors who install loudspeaker systems in airport terminals – particularly where there is a need to focus sound reproduction in specific areas to help overcome ambient noise.

Velázquez concludes, “The ICONYX systems not only deliver crystal clear audio, they also cover the large areas with fewer source points, simplifying the installation and maintenance of the entire PA system.”

Wu-Jin’s New Phoenix Valley Cultural Center Spreads its Wings with Renkus-Heinz

Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province, China – May, 2014 – On a busy thoroughfare in Changzhou’s Wujin District, the aptly named Phoenix Valley Cultural Center stretches its wings over more than 156,000 square feet. The vast complex is the largest and most modern of its kind, an urban nexus that is home to four cinemas, sports and dance halls, art galleries and an early childhood education center, as well as a retail hub, children’s playgrounds, and a public square with canals and gardens.

The complex’s crown jewel is The Grand Theater. Seating just over 1,000 across two floors, the Grand Theater shifts the typical theater paradigm into something just as unique as it is state-of-the-art. The venue’s classic stage can host a wide range of events, from musical to theatrical, and 17 projectors can transform the stage, as well as the walls of the auditorium, into an Omni-Max style theater.

Audio for the Theater needed to be equally versatile, able to accommodate a variety of events, from drama, live shows and TV to meetings, conferences and multi-media reporting. The main system, designed by prominent consulting firm Shanghai LeDian Audio Equipment Co., Ltd., comprises left,  right, and center hangs of 14 Renkus-Heinz STLA/9 line array loudspeakers in all. Eight SGX41 four-inch loudspeakers are mounted on the orchestra rail for front fill, with six TRX81 boxes providing rear fill, and four DRS18-2B subwoofers adding low end reinforcement. Onstage monitoring is handled by a combination of PNX151T, TRX121/9, and CF81 cabinets.

For cinema presentations, a surround system is installed comprising 20 TRX81/12 boxes, along with three STX7/64 cabinets mounted up top for sound effects. Onstage effects are provided by a single STX5M2 loudspeaker and STX5 subwoofer.

Adjacent to the Grand Theater is The Small Theater, a 200+ seat auditorium designed for meetings, multimedia conferences, runway shows, small performances and other cultural activities. Shanghai LeDian selected left and right arrays of three Renkus-Heinz STX4 cabinets as the Small Theater’s main system, with four CFX81 boxes for front fill and a pair of DRS18-2B subs.

For Shanghai LeDan Audio Equipment Co.,. Ltd., the addition of one of China’s most prominent new cultural centers to the company’s portfolio is a prestigious one, to be sure. And for the Phoenix Valley Cultural Center, LeDan’s selection of Renkus-Heinz loudspeaker systems assures that the venue will continue to deliver the finest in audio quality, no matter what type of performance is on the program.

Tech Works Brings IC Live to the Party

Las Vegas, NV – May 2014…Tech Works, a leading Las Vegas-based sound and production company, just took delivery of new Renkus-Heinz IC Live digitally steerable loudspeakers, and in fact, has already deployed them successfully on several shows.

“We strive to provide our clients with the very best audio experience, and the IC Live is a fantastic sounding system,” states Tom Bourke, general manager of Tech Works. “It provides a tremendous amount of output from a very compact footprint, while the digital steering allows us to focus audio on the audience and not all over the room.”

The Tech Works IC Live package is comprised of ICL-R full-range modules and IC215S dual-15-inch bandpass subwoofers that can be combined into six different configurations.

“The scalability and flexibility of the system is fantastic, and allows us to configure a rig for a wide variety of events, from small to large,” Bourke notes. “Our clients love the sound, and they also love the look and profile of the slim columns.”

In addition to IC Live, Tech Works also recently took delivery of several Renkus-Heinz RH62 portable point-source loudspeakers, which utilize the same driver compliment as the IC Live Series, making them ideal front fill and/or delay loudspeakers to supplement IC Live main systems.

“With a width of only 8 inches (the same as the ICL-R modules), we can tuck these boxes into places a more traditional cabinet would not fit yet still get impressive output and superb audio quality,” adds Bourke.

Renkus-Heinz Adds Color to New York’s Grey Bar

New York, NY – April 2014… The area around midtown Manhattan is about as busy and bustling as one might expect in the heart of the City that Never Sleeps. Packed into these few square miles is a staggering array of museums, shops, casual and upscale eateries and watering holes.

Since opening its doors last year, Grey Bar has quickly become a popular neighborhood spot for the midtown crowd. The restaurant’s kitchen has been receiving stellar reviews, and the dining room has been perpetually full.

The Grey Bar’s sound system, installed by Rego Park, NY-based Starview Satellite and designed by Rich Trombitas of Cardone, Solomon, and Associates, is designed to keep pace with the club’s ambience, whether it’s the midday lunch crowd or the more upbeat dinner hours. The system comprises a dozen Renkus-Heinz TRX81 two-way complex conic loudspeakers, with four cabinets across the bar and and eight more covering the dining areas.

As Starview’s John Paturno explains, the TRX Series was ideally suited for this application, with a tight pattern control that enabled the sound to be focused away from many of the room’s abundance of mirrors, glass, and other reflective surfaces.

“We were impressed with the flexibility of the TRX81 as well,” says Paturno. “Initially, we had planned on mounting all the cabinets horizontally, but due to some last-minute architectural changes, it became necessary to reorient a few of them vertically. We were impressed with how easily we were able to rotate the horn to achieve the coverage we needed.” Powersoft amplification drives the system, with Symetrix DSP also providing Web-based access to the system. “The owners can adjust the source and volume, even from off-site,” adds Paturno.

The Grey Bar has become an instant hit with the busy urban set, praised both for its menu and its ambience. As Paturno points out, the TRX Series has been a big part of that ambience. “The uniformity and flexibility of the TRX81s provide the perfect non-intrusive backdrop for the lunch and dinner crowds, with the capacity for a more high energy sound for the later night Manhattan crowd.”

PreSonus Tames the Loudest Hole in Golf

Scottsdale, AZ – April 2014… With a history dating back to the 1930s, the Phoenix Open is one of pro golf’s most celebrated events. Now known as the Waste Management Phoenix Open, the tournament has hosted some of the biggest names in the game, from Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, and Ben Crenshaw to Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh, and Tiger Woods.

In 1987, the Open moved to its current home at the world-renowned TPC Scottsdale golf course. The course was custom designed for the tournament and is best known for the 16th hole of its Stadium Course. It has often been referred to as “the loudest hole in golf”; during the tournament, its amphitheater-style seats are packed with crowds of exuberant fans and spectators who cheer and jeer loudly as the pros play through.

David Eriksson, CEO of Phoenix-based Church Technologies, is a volunteer with the Phoenix Thunderbirds, a prominent civic organization that has supported the Open throughout its storied history, raising millions of dollars for Phoenix-area charities. Eriksson, who has lent his audio skills to the event for close to a decade, explains the challenges behind the 16th hole.

“It’s always been a bit of a crazy event, and by the time the players get through to hole 16, they’re nearing the end of their game, and things are loosening up,” he observes. “But it’s still a regulation game, and the PGA has some pretty stringent regulations regarding noise. The challenge is to find just the right balance of being heard over the crowd without overpowering the game.”

Eriksson found the solution a few months before this year’s Open. “We did an event last December as part of the Shane and Shane tour, and I got to hear the new PreSonus® StudioLive™ AI loudspeakers,” he recalls. “I just loved the way they sounded, and I thought it would be great to try them out at the Open.”

Four systems were brought in to cover the 16th hole, each comprising three StudioLive 328AI Active Integration™ loudspeakers and a StudioLive 18sAI subwoofer. “We had one system in the Chairman’s Club, another in the bar area, and two more on the crowd,” says Eriksson. “The sound was just wonderful—the system had such amazing clarity.”

For next year’s Open, Eriksson plans on bringing in a StudioLive AI-series digital console, too, to take full advantage of Active Integration. “I’m really excited about being able to control the mix from an iPad,” he enthuses. “I can be down in the tee box and hear what the players are hearing. That’s an amazing advantage.”

“This is one of the biggest events in professional golf, and getting the sound right is a big part of it,” Eriksson concludes. “PreSonus has pretty much everything we need, from the console to the speakers, and it’s all fully integrated to work together. It’s a great fit.”
