Famed Kentucky Eatery Gets New Sound with Community

Georgetown, KY, July 2012….  Galvin’s Restaurant is one of Georgetown’s most popular watering holes, with a busting restaurant and a crowd of friendly regulars who gather to shoot the breeze and watch their team, the Southeastern Conference University of Kentucky Wildcats.

Like most busy establishments, there are those who come to watch the game, and others who want to hang out with friends. And as often happens, the banter of those enjoying each others’ company can make it hard for others to hear the game.

“They had four small wall-mounted loudspeakers, and when things got busy the ambient noise made it hard for people to hear,” explains Curtis Cox of Nicholasville, KY-based Curtis Cox Music. “Some customers would ask for it to be turned up, and others would complain that it was too loud.”

The room’s acoustics precluded simply adding more or louder speakers. “The building is rather old,” says Cox. “On one side the ceiling is plaster, and on the opposite side the ceiling is painted metal. We knew if we put speakers in the wall, we’d end up with sound bouncing all over the place. And running additional wiring through the walls would be a challenge due to the age of the building.”

Cox’s solution was to focus the sound downward using a distributed system of Community DP6 pendant loudspeakers. Eighteen of the pendant loudspeakers are suspended from the open-beam ceiling – three over the bar and the rest covering a pair of tables each. “We ran each speaker to a custom-designed control box, with a 35W auto transformer on each speaker,” Cox explains. “Now the restaurant manager can adjust each individual speaker’s level to suit the customers’ taste.” Crown CDi amplification powers the system, with an Alesis 8-channel line mixer providing inputs from various audio sources.

“We’ve used Community loudspeakers on a number of projects over the years, and have always had great results,” says Cox. “We were confident that the DP6 would be a great solution, and it has proven to be just that. We’re very impressed with the sound and performance.”

Continental Air Show Productions Pumps Star Spangled Sailabration with Community

Baltimore, MD, July 2012…  On the morning of September 14, 1814, Major George Armistead signaled the American victory in the war of 1812 by raising the first American flag over Fort McHenry. The incident inspired poet Francis Scott Key to write the Star Spangled Banner, which would eventually be declared this country’s national anthem.

On June 13, the city of Baltimore kicked off a three-year national commemoration of the events of 1812 with the Star Spangled Sailabration, a seven-day festival of concerts, celebrations, fireworks, an international parade of ships, and a rousing air show featuring the Blue Angels.

To provide audio support for the Blue Angels air show, Continental Air Show Productions selected a dozen Community R.5HPT loudspeakers. RH Signature Series Wins Best Of Show at InfoComm 2012

Las Vegas, NV, June 2012…. At InfoComm 2012, Renkus-Heinz introduced their newest product, the Ralph Heinz Signature Series loudspeakers. Iconyx Gives Initiatives of Change a Clear Hearing

Caux, Switzerland – June 2012… Above the clear waters of Lake Geneva, in the small village resort of Caux overlooking Montreux, the locally-nicknamed ‘Cinderella’s Castle’ hosts an annual series of conferences hosted by CAUX-Initiatives of Change.

An independent officially recognized Swiss foundation, the body works to promote peace, prevent conflicts, build trust and encourage intercultural dialogue and ethical conduct in business. CAUX-Initiatives of Change is a member of Initiatives of Change International, an NGO in special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations and participatory status at the Council of Europe.

Their summer seminars in Caux draw people from all over the world, in what was until 1946 the grand Caux-Palace Hotel. A magnificent and peaceful setting, but one whose acoustic legacy has proved a major downside for its current use.

British sound designer Terry Nelson, whose Switzerland-based company Studio Equipment was hired to improve speech intelligibility in the main conference area, explains: “The main salon of the hotel, where the conferences are held, has high ceilings and a wonderful cupola in the centre, with pseudo-art deco plasterwork. The effect of all this is almost infinite flutter echoes, and the area under the cupola works like a whispering gallery. It’s basically a very difficult environment to deliver clear speech to up to 450 people.”

To make the acoustics more complex still, the central area and stage are flanked by a glass conservatory-style wing overlooking the gardens to stage right, and a corridor to stage left.

In a classic scenario, he says, “They’d had a PA installed, with perfectly good quality loudspeakers that were unfortunately totally the wrong choice for the highly reflective environment. People despaired about understanding conversations and presentations. They’d also installed an 8-channel multiple translation system, and many people turned to using that system’s headphones in an effort to understand what was being said.”

The conference’s British technical director Brian Thirlaway initially contacted an audio company in Zurich, which in turn recommended Studio Equipment. Says Nelson: “We did a site visit and from the outset it was obvious that we needed a highly directional system to tame the multiple reflections.” Further discussions revealed that while speech would be the primary use, subtle sound reinforcement for small groups or solo instruments was also required.

Nelson recommended Renkus-Heinz Iconyx’s digital beam steering capabilities to direct sound away from the walls and cupola. The main system consists of two IC16-R arrays, controlled by RHAON software over CobraNet via a remote Ethernet port, along with two CF Series subwoofers.

The slim arrays fit perfectly either side of a mock proscenium arch and are run via analogue audio lines from an existing DDA Q Series console, with control via Ethernet from a Renkus-Heinz IC-RC1 RHAON remote preset control that allows simple user switching between preset modes. The console also feeds two Iconyx IC7 arrays (via groups), which cover the conservatory and corridor areas.

Says Nelson: “Having looked at the room, I did an initial set-up with Renkus-Heinz’s BeamWare II beam alignment software. With the rear wall around 30 metres from the stage, I set up the IC16s so that five separate horizontal beams covered the audience area evenly from front to back.”

“One of the best comments we had,” says Nelson, “was that the general secretary of the organisation was very pleased, saying that for the first time you could understand every word without using the interpreter system headphones, even right at the back or under the cupola.

“From our point of view, when we were doing the first commissioning, one of my colleagues stood right under the cupola, where the sound comes at you from all directions.

“It takes a lot to impress him and he said he couldn’t hear a single echo, just some natural room reverb.

“The whole team was there at the time and it was a case of ‘problem solved’. As a final touch, Renkus-Heinz delivered the Iconyx arrays in a finish that precisely matches the white decor.”

Renkus-Heinz Unveils New Products at InfoComm 2012

Las Vegas, NV, June 2012…. The Renkus-Heinz booth and demo room were buzzing with activity throughout the three days of InfoComm 2012, with visitors and customers making the company’s newest products a must-see at the show.

One of the biggest hits at the show was the introduction of the new Ralph Heinz Signature Series loudspeaker line. The RH Signature Series, which includes both self-powered and passive models with a dual wedge angle design and multiple rigging and mounting options, was recognized with ProSound Network’s prestigious Best Of Show award.

Also making a splash was the new Varia series, an innovative modular design that can be configured as a vertical line array, point source horizontal array, or ground stacked. Varia’s flexible design makes it an excellent choice for a wide range of permanent or touring applications.

Community Provides Loud and Clear Flood Warning for Venice

Venice, Italy, June 2012...  While it’s well known that the city of Venice’s transport infrastructure relies heavily on its canals, not many people are aware of the sometimes tenuous relationship Mother Nature has on this arrangement. The canals, which carry thousands of gondolas, launches, barges and water buses daily, are subject to tidal conditions and therefore constantly changing.

High tide levels mean reduced headroom under bridges, and the city’s transportation often needs to be re-routed. When pavements and other pedestrian areas disappear under water, raised walkways may need to be erected. The city’s population and its large number of commuters are used to these changes, but accurate, timely information about the tides is important to keep daily life on track.

To that end, a powerful audio system based around Community R-Series loudspeakers has been installed as part of a flood warning system for the city of Venice. Located in fifteen bell-towers in central Venice and at a further fifteen locations on outlying islands, the loudspeakers play a series of alert and musical tones that inform residents of the coming tidal levels, so that they can plan accordingly. The system, supplied by Prase Engineering, was specified by audio consultant Ing. Umberto Nicolao and installed by Verona-based S.T.A.S.

The loudspeaker system is one of many ways the city of Venice’s Previsioni E Segnalazioni Maree (Tidal Forecasting and Signalling Centre) is utilizing technology to keep city residents and working commuters informed. (The city also maintains a website, a toll-free phone line, touchscreen information kiosks, and even a smartphone app.) An old siren-based audio system had also been used for many years but it was increasingly less reliable, due to mechanical deterioration, and it could only broadcast one alert signal. The new multi-tone audio system uses a specially designed version of Community’s R.5 loudspeaker, designed precisely for the power, frequency response and dispersion required. Size was also critical in being able to deliver and mount the loudspeakers in some of the ancient towers where they were to be deployed. And of course, Community’s legendary weather resistance was also a factor in selecting the R-Series.

This new approach to a centuries-old challenge was a custom project for city planners, as well as the system designers, installers and for Community. Its implementation has already made a tremendous impact on the daily flow of traffic around this busy city, improving the lives of commuters and residents alike.

StudioLive Breathes Life into LifeWay Summer Camps

United States, June, 2012…  Summer camp is a ritual for kids and teens all across the U.S., and LifeWay Christian Resources is a familiar name for many of them. LifeWay hosts a wide range of multi-day summer camps at colleges and retreat centers throughout the nation, from recreation and Bible study for younger kids to workshops and mission-based camps for teens and young adults. As Josh Webb, LifeWay’s resident engineer and tech guru, explains, live music is a big part of the experience.

“There’s a lot of activities during the day, from team building to community service,” says Webb. “Then, in the evenings, there’s music. It’s usually a four- to six-piece band: full drum kit, bass, guitars, keyboards, and of course, vocals.”

For Webb, who coordinates sound and lighting for most of the camps, that means an ongoing routine that keeps him busy through the summer. “We’ll typically rent a facility for a few weeks during the summer, set up audio, lighting, and all that stuff; then we’ll load up the truck and move to another location,” he says.

Needless to say, it’s a big job keeping track of so many locations and crews, and LifeWay recently streamlined the process with the purchase of more than 30 StudioLive™ 24.4.2 digital consoles.

“Previously we had a whole bunch of different analog consoles,” says Webb. “We’d truck in our analog consoles, racks of gear, and cabling, and put it all together. Replacing them all with StudioLive consoles has been great on so many levels.”

The StudioLive’s fully integrated effects have really changed the equation, Webb reports.

“The PreSonus console is pretty much the heart of the audio system for us. We’ve literally got three or four warehouse palettes of compressors, limiters, and other outboard gear that we just don’t need anymore because everything’s built into the desk. It’s really lightened the load for the travel teams and has made setup and teardown a breeze.”

The StudioLive’s ease of use is another major asset. “It’s basically set up like an analog console, even though everything’s digital under the hood,” says Webb. “So the learning curve is almost nonexistent. They don’t have to run through pages and pages of menus – everything is accessible via the Fat Channel.”

Webb says they’ve only just begun to tap into the potential of the StudioLive’s capabilities. “We’ve got MacBooks® or iMacs® with every console, so we can do live recording via Capture™,” he says. “We’re using some of the tracks for a virtual sound check, especially in places where we’ve got multiple performances in the same place. It’s great for training people as well: We can have our newer engineers play back a multitrack recording and experiment with different dynamics and effects without the pressure and risk of doing it during a live show.”

“Eventually we’ll be implementing iPad® control and QMix™ for the monitor mix,” he adds. “This first year, we’re just starting with iPad control for a few teams, just to get our feet wet. Basically, we’re telling our more tech-savvy people that if they already have an iPad, they can go ahead and check out the remote-mixing capability. The information will trickle down to the rest of the teams throughout the summer.”

With so many different crews to coordinate, having everyone on the same console is more than just a convenience, he adds. “It’s a great thing for me, in particular, since I’m the guy who has to troubleshoot the setups. The consistency of knowing that every setup is now using a StudioLive console makes my life that much easier.” Webb is presently putting together a knowledgebase, to enable the entire team of engineers to share notes and get the most out of the StudioLive.

“In the past, we’ve been relatively old school as far as the audio is concerned,” Webb concludes. “But we’ve always tried to push ourselves forward and find ways to do things better, faster, and more efficiently. And the StudioLive consoles have been a huge step forward.”

Classic 19th Century Church Merges History and High-Tech

Wilmington, DE, June 2012…  In the middle of the 19th Century, the Industrial Revolution was in full swing, and Wilmington was a booming shipping port and steel town with a rapidly growing working class populace. Founded in 1868 as a “workingman’s church,” Grace United Methodist Church has been a landmark in the heart of downtown Wilmington since well before most of its neighboring structures, earning it a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.

Though the 500 seat sanctuary is not overly large, it’s nonetheless as majestic and impressive as any mega-cathedral. The building’s hand-built stone edifice is a gateway to a soaring 55-foot arched ceiling and a collection of stunningly beautiful stained glass masterpieces.

Grace United Methodist has also gained a reputation throughout the region for its music and musicians, including a highly sought after choir and a resident chamber music ensemble, Mélamonie. As Tony Hersch, President of Pottstown, PA-based Audiobahn, explains, the talent and professionalism of the church’s musicians has gone a long way in setting it apart.

“Many of the singers in their choir are accomplished professionals, and virtually all of them are phenomenally talented, on an operatic level,” says Hersch. “Their director is a highly accomplished pianist and organist, with a doctorate in music, and their performances are always in high demand.”

With such a strong emphasis on music, it’s not surprising that Grace United Methodist Church’s elders and congregation were less reserved than many Methodist congregations in their approach to sound system design. “They were very involved in the process of selecting their new audio system,” says Hersch. “They really did their research and knew what they wanted to accomplish.”

With its vintage lathe and plaster walls, reflectivity has long been a problem in the sanctuary, and spoken word intelligibility was a prime requirement for the new sound system. But musicality was also a critical factor – the system had to deliver full-range performance that could complement the choir and musicians.

The idea of a traditional line array was first suggested, but as Hersch points out, this was a project where a line array would have looked out of place. “Aesthetics are really a consideration in a place like this,” he says. “The architecture is absolutely gorgeous, and hanging a bunch of speaker cabinets would have just destroyed the aesthetic completely. We were suggesting a very different approach.”

Hersch arranged to demo a pair of ENTASYS steerable arrays. “We set up a pair of ENTASYS full-range cabinets on tripods, along with a VLF208 subwoofer to give it some bottom end,” he says. “We ran an EASE program on the room, set things up, and they were just blown away. Everyone in the choir got up and sang through it. We utilized a Shure wireless lavalier system and a Countryman podium mic for the demo. We were able to tune the lav mic to a point where it sounded like a good quality handheld mic. The sound was just wonderful.”

The church also took delivery of one of the first-available Soundcraft SiCompact digital mixing consoles, incorporating it into a new custom-built booth at mix position. The console is connected via MADI to a Pro Tools|HD system. “They record most of their services to two-track as well as multitrack, and then mix and master it for download on their website,” Hersch explains. “The services are very popular.”

To pick up the choir, Hersch provided four Audix MicroBooms on mic stands, while the vintage piano is outfitted with a Helpinstill Piano Pickup System. On the main platform, monitoring is handled by four custom-stained Community iBOX i2w8 cabinets. Community VERIS 8 cabinets provide monitoring for the choir.

Reactions to the new system have been overwhelming, says Hersch. “The ENTASYS sounds fantastic. The sound is focused where it needs to be, and the new system allows them to easily record the service and make it available to others. We’ve taken a church from the early 1800s and incorporated 21st century technology into it.”

Community Soups Up Richmond International Raceway

Richmond International Raceway is arguably one of the most popular racetracks in motorsports. “America’s Premier Short Track,” as it is known, is home to the annual NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and NASCAR Nationwide Series, as well as a full calendar of other events. As WJHW’s Jack McCallum explains, the rear-mounted system provides improved coverage and better sightlines for the audience and television cameras.

Community Promotes Bellando to Head Up Strategic Development

Chester, PA, June 2012…   Community Professional Loudspeakers has appointed Rich Bellando to the position of Strategic Development Manager.

Bellando has been with Community since 2005, when he joined the company as an Inside Sales Associate. He was later promoted to Senior Sales Administrator, where he provided comprehensive customer support to Community’s dealer and distributor network.
