AES London 2011 Heyser Lecture by MP3/MPEG Pioneer Karlheinz Brandenburg

LONDON: The 130th AES Convention will be highlighted by a Richard C. Heyser Lecture Series presentation by Karlheinz Brandenburg. A driving force behind such innovative digital audio technology as mp3 and MPEG audio standards, Mr. Brandenburg’s lecture is entitled, “How to Provide High Quality Audio Everywhere: The mp3 Story And More…” The presentation will be held Saturday, May 14, 18:30 – 20:00, at the Novotel London West Convention Center.

Once upon a time professional audio was challenged by the need to transmit high quality audio over phone lines. Psychoacoustics experts and signal processing researchers eventually solved the equation. mp3 and other audio Codec’s were developed to enable seamless transport of audio over thin lines. However, the mp3 story did not end there. The Internet was transforming from a text-based medium into a major carrier for sound of all kinds, including music. This issue introduced new dangers for audio quality. more

aes-bdcast-chair-david-bialik.jpg

NEW YORK: Continuing a successful initiative launched in 2009, AES 131st Convention Broadcast/Media Streaming Chair David Bialik has issued an RFP to industry members for recommendations on broadcast-related issues or technical innovations, for event consideration. The convention will be held Oct. 20-23 at New York’s Jacob Javits Convention Center.

“With 25+ years of AES Conventions under my belt I’ve got a pretty good handle on the types of events our attendees find most beneficial to enhancing their job performance,” Bialik remarked. “That being said, I have also seen the benefits of maintaining an open line of communications with our audience. We have already formulated a tentative program of Broadcast and Media Streaming events, but we would consider additional panels if worthwhile suggestions are introduced. We are particularly interested in hearing from experts in Media Streaming, high and low-end Internet TV, Radio, Satellite, and digital innovation.”

Regardless of the on-going movement towards laptop recording, purists with the desire and the means to create full-scale, well-equipped studios continue to pursue their pro studio dreams. A pair of youthful Argentine brothers recently engaged the Walters-Storyk Design Group in Buenos Aires to create a high-end home studio for their Roma & Romma Records label.

Constructing the studio as an annex to the family home required particular attention to acoustic isolation. “Our clients wanted the freedom play and record any time of the day or night without disturbing their family,” explains WSDG-LA partner Sergio Molho. “They retained us for the design-through-construction, and complete turnkey systems integration of a professional studio with acoustically perfect live and control rooms.”

“WSDG has created studios for such artists as Fito Paez, Alicia Keys, more

MASQUE SOUND RE-TEAMS WITH AKUSTIKS FOR BROADWAY’S NEW VICTORY THEATER UPGRADE

NEW YORK: At 111 years of age, The Victory Theater on West 42nd Street has staged every conceivable theatrical presentation, from straight plays to live burlesque, even a brief stint as a XXX movie house. In 1992, The Victory became one of seven historic theaters adopted by The New 42nd St. Inc. a not-for-profit organization created by NYC and NYS to revitalize the district. Renamed The New Victory in December1995 following a $11.4 million renovation, the theater now presents exclusively family-oriented shows and is mandated by its not-for-profit status to maintain tickets within the $9.00 to $38.00 price range.

By 2010, the sound system installed during the 1995 renovation was beginning to show its age. “We were basically OK with the EAW-based system, but it was mid-range, and inadequate for the more ambitious productions we’ve been mounting,” explains New Victory director of production, David Jensen. “Anthony Nittoli had more

northwest-college-control-to-live.jpg

POWELL, WYO: An enthusiastic AES member, Robert Rumbolz has always made a point of attending Broadcast Facility Design Panels chaired by John Storyk at recent Conventions. In 2009 as he was reviewing plans for a teaching/recording studio for the Music Department of Northwest College in Powell, Wyo., where he serves as Music Dept. Coordinator and Director of Music Technology, Rumbolz visited the Walters-Storyk Design Group AES Booth at the Javits Center. In a meeting with WSDG principal architect/acoustician John Storyk, he sought an opinion on drawings prepared by CTA, a local (Billings, Montana) architectural firm.

A fervent supporter of pro audio education, designer of many teaching facilities around the country, and a frequent lecturer on studio design and acoustics, Storyk’s initial take on the plans revealed some design issues. A discussion with more
