RED RELIES ON NIPROS CAMERA SYSTEMS FOR NAB DEMOS

LAS VEGAS – NAB BOOTH #N314: Seeking a high performance camera system to support NAB demos of their 4K/HD EPIC DRAGON Cinema Camera, RED Digital Cinema engineers reached out to Samaserve CTO Sal Sandoval for details on the Nipros LS-750GT and LS 750 camera-mounted fiber adapter systems. The demos, scheduled throughout the 4-day NAB Show, will find the DRAGON providing a live 4K feed produced at the Vizrt booth (#SL2419)’s “Virtual Studio” set that will be sent to the Snell booth (#N1820), located in separate halls, via fiber-optic cabling for viewing and live switching

“I first learned about the LS-750 and 750GT Systems from Sal Sandoval last year,” said Steve Pizzo, co-founder of Element Technica, a division of RED Digital Cinema. “I reached out to Samaserve in December when we began formulating our NAB 2014 demo program. We needed a comprehensive camera system capable of flawlessly transmitting uncompressed 4K and HD signals simultaneously from Vizrt’s booth to Snell’s booth for display on a large, high res Samsung screen. The specs on the Nipros System met all our requirements.”

In February and March, Nipros’ Sandoval provided Pizzo with an LS-750 system for testing at the Red facility in Burbank. The rig’s signal conversion and other features for 4K acquisition performed flawlessly. “Those trials convinced us that the system was ideal for our purposes,” Pizzo said. “[Sandoval] then demoed a 750GT system, which further assured us that Nipros met all of our needs.”

The flagship Nipros LS-750/GT camera-mounted fiber adapter system, which is being used at the Vizrt Demo area in booth SL2419, supports virtually any 4K camera. The system acquires and flawlessly passes simultaneous uncompressed 4K and HD signals for distances of up to 1.24 miles with the option of distances beyond 6.2 miles. The LS-750/GT offers users five 3G SDI streams directly out of the camera, as well as one return 3G/HD-SDI/SD-SDI signal. All types of 4K plus HD, or five separate HD streams, can be transported simultaneously, with the ability to mix the five asynchronous 3G/HD/SD streams independently. RED Digital is using 4K signals from a Nipros LS 750 System at the Snell booth where the feed is switched live via a Kahuna 360. Both the LS 750/GT, which offers up to 300 watts of power at the camera and has 12/24-volt capability, and the LS 750 which offers 60 watts of power, are on display at the Nipros booth as well as on the RED and Vizrt demo sites.

“Nipros Systems was a primary catalyst behind my partners and I deciding to form Samaserve,” Sandoval said. “Earning this level of support at an early stage in the introduction of an important new system is critical. We are extremely pleased to have earned RED’s trust to support their DRAGON Cinema Camera Demos.”

NAB DEBUT FOR SAMASERVE & NIPROS CAMERA SYSTEM

LAS VEGAS, NAB BOOTH #N314: At the upcoming 2014 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show in April, Samaserve, the exclusive North and South American sales and support company for the Nipros line of camera-agnostic systems and accessories, will show attendees how to get the most out of their 4K digital cinema cameras while simultaneously producing a 4K and full (1920x1080p) high-definition production.

“The Nipros System empowers users to maximize the potential of any camera and, for any type of shooting situation,” said industry veteran Bob Ott, a Samaserve co-founder. “With optical and multi-core camera adapters, viewfinders, camera sleds, mounting plates, shoulder camcorder mounting accessories, and audio mixers, Nipros covers a tremendous range of production needs.”

In Booth N314, Samaserve will spotlight its flagship Nipros LS-750/GT Camera-Mounted Fiber Adapter System, which works with any 4K camera-acquiring and flawlessly passing simultaneous uncompressed 4K and HD signals – The new LS-750/GT camera-mounted fiber adapter system provides users with five 3G SDI downstreams directly out of the camera, as well as one return of 3G/HD-SDI/SD-SDI signals. All types of 4K plus HD, or five separate HD streams, can be transported simultaneously, with the ability to mix the five asynchronous 3G/HD/SD streams independently

The innovative fiber adapter also offers: Active loop-through output for each 3G-SDI input; the ability to transmit complete SDI signal payloads, including embedded audio as well as all ancillary data; Tally (green and red) signal transmission; Time code (TC) Input/Output; two lines of Intercom (PROD & ENG); full two-way camera RCP remote control; LANC remote control; LAN (Ethernet) IP communication link (100Base-TX); HD-SDI/SD-SDI & VBS/HD-Y return video transmission; high capacity power supply capability for the camera plus accessories. The optical fiber conversion system also enables signals to be transported (from camera to OB truck and/or from cameras to studio control room) up to 2 Km (1.2 miles) with 60W power or 200m (more than 650 feet) with 300W power supply over standard SMPTE 311M hybrid optical fiber cable.

“The LS-750/850GT fiber adapter system is designed to be completely flexible with all camera manufacturers,” said Sal Sandoval, another Samaserve co-founder. “Users can produce all types of projects with different cameras and ultimately get a faster return on their investment since they aren’t using a system that only works with one camera model. There is no need to maintain different fiber adapter systems for each camera manufacturer. The system supports five 3G HDSDI signals – that’s full 4K (using up to 4 HDSDI 3G connections) plus an HDSDI connection for live, simultaneous, HD transmission. This (5) 3G SDI capability offers overall simplicity to the system. Additionally, Nipros systems do not require additions like power blocks, power enhancers, etc.

The Nipros HDS 300 Camera Sled:
This is a professional studio build-up rig designed to quickly convert most compact handheld or shoulder type camcorders from Canon, Panasonic, Phantom (Vision Research), JVC, Hitachi, Ikegami and Sony. The sled’s rugged aluminum die-cast chassis is designed to handle daily production tasks with a variety of professional functions that supports a wide range of optional equipment. This takes a non-studio, camera / camcorder and makes it ready for the Broadcast / Professional user.

Also included with the sled are multiple attachment points for accessories, such as the Nipros 7 inch, HDF-700 View Finder, and other essential items

Nipros ES-Series of Multicore Systems:
The Nipros ES-500 (for shoulder mount camera); ES-600 (base station, compatible with both 500 and 300); and ES-300 (for handheld camcorder) will also be on display. ES-series multi-core camera conversion systems provide a cost-effective fully featured HD/SD SDI studio camera conversion solution for all types of handheld or shoulder mount cameras/camcorders. They can be used to transfer two lines of HD or SD SDI signals through a specially developed multi-core cable that incorporates two HD/SD SDI cables within a 26pin multi-core cable assembly.

This means both camera and return signals can be HD/SD SDI. It also supports video component signals, HD-Y return, camera remote control, tally, time code, power, etc., – all of which are transported down the one single multi-core cable. It offers high-quality and cost-effective field and studio production performance and an extendable distance between camera adaptor and base station of more than 50 meters (with a 50W DC power supply).

Nipros Shoulder-Mount Rigs:
The NEW Nipros ST-7S300 shoulder-mount rig is designed to offer an elegant, ergonomically pleasing solution unlike any other rig on the market today.

New HD Viewfinders/Monitors:
Samaserve will exhibit a brand new line of viewfinders and on-camera monitors for all types of live and studio applications. For example, the new Nipros HDFR500 5-inch full HD (1920×1080) unit provides the full color gamut HD image on screen without scaling, and supports 3G SDI inputs as well as HDMI inputs, SDI outputs, and analog inputs.

New Nipros Camera System Accessories:
Samaserve’s NAB Booth (N314) will also feature a full line of Nipros camera accessories, such as a rear lens controller (for zoom and focus demand) and several viewfinder interfaces for manufacturer-specific cameras that provide return video. This includes optional full lens control with the AS-1P for zoom and the FR-P1 for focus/iris.

Note: Samaserve will conduct a live demonstration (TBD) of an end-to-end 4K workflow, in tandem with Canon, whereby a Nipros LS-750/GT camera-mounted fiber adapter tied to a Canon CF500 digital cinema camera will be shown acquiring and sending 4K raw information. The resulting images will be projected on a large screen within the Las Vegas Convention center.

NY’S QUAD STUDIOS BOW WSDG UPGRADE

NEW YORK: Ricky Hosn and Alessio Casalini, co-owners of Quad, one of NYC’s most popular and prolific recording studios, have completed a significant redesign of their Q1 Control Room. Working with Walters-Storyk Design Group architect/ acoustician John Storyk, Hosn and Casalini maximized the interior space of their primary studio, and significantly pumped up the volume of their Augspurger system.

“When the room was originally built in 2010, it centered around the producer’s production needs,” Hosn says. “We had a huge rack in the middle of the room that we used as a production desk. Today’s clients are less reliant on actual instruments and equipment; they’ve embraced software-based production. We decided to free up the back of the room and shift the racks to the side. We saw this build out as an opportunity to enhance the overall sound, look and vibe of the room. The WSDG team came up with a great redesign concept that performs exactly the way we hoped it would.”

Though Hosn has known Storyk since 2005 this marks his first time working with WSDG. “Our primary goal was to create more legroom for our 320 sq. ft. control room, and update its aesthetics to make our clients more comfortable,” he says. “We also decided to upgraded our Augspurger sound system with custom digital amps and an integrated DSP processor that provides 5000w of total power. We replaced our tweeters with new Beryllium Diaphragms, and added two 18″ subwoofers. One of the challenges of the renovation was to improve the sound quality of the room while adding a more powerful sound system. Thanks to the combined efforts of WSDG and Dave Malikpour of Pro Audio Design we achieved a sound that surpassed our expectations. Q1′s always been one of NYC’s loudest rooms,” Hosn says, “but now it’s super-powered loud!”

“This was an interesting project,” John Storyk remarked. “Quad has always had a first tier client base and a superb reputation. WSDG was pleased to be invited to re-imagine this well loved room, and that the program we devised hit the mark. As with any busy room a primary concern was keeping downtime to a minimum. From beginning to end the project took about 2 months, and we held actual downtime to under a week. We achieved that abbreviated schedule with precise planning, and by having the major components of the new design pre-fabricated off site,” Storyk says.

Hosn reports initial client reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. “The first artists in the completed room were Natalie Imbruglia, Hilary Duff and Ne-Yo, they loved what WSDG did with the room. Trey Songs and 50 Cents came through for a look and immediately booked sessions. With the renovations and our Augspurger system upgrade, Studio Q1 is undoubtedly one of the clearest and loudest sounding rooms in the city.”

A Mecca for stars ranging from Tupak Shakur to Ashanti, Nelly, and Tony Braxton, Quad Studios has called 723 Seventh Ave.its Times Square home since the early 80′s. Hosn acquired the company from original owner Lou Gonzales in 2005.

BEN FINDLAY MIXING FOH AND STUDIO FOR GABRIEL WITH SONNOX

New Concert Film Being Prepped For Theatrical Release

WILTSHIRE, UK: Having mixed extensively at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios throughout the 90s, Ben Findlay is primarily a live engineer these days. Having mixed live shows for Gabriel, Paul McCartney, Jeff Beck, Robert Plant, Cat Stevens, Sting and other major artists, he clearly enjoys ‘life on the road.’

Two concerts from Peter Gabriel’s “Back To Front Tour” were filmed last October at London’s O2 Arena, and are currently being edited for release as a 4K Cinema feature this year. Findlay is mixing the audio for the movie and DVD release, utilizing Real World Studios’ Dolby certified Exigy speaker array.

He reports the Sonnox Oxford EQ is playing a crucial role in the project, with the GML Option a particularly helpful asset. “Most of the EQ’s in this mix are Oxfords, and the Inflator is my secret weapon,” Findlay says. “I use it primarily on Peter’s vocal channel, to give it a presence that dominates the mix. It’s proved extremely effective in bringing extra life to the drum bus as well.”

“Oxford Reverb is also a great favorite of mine, Findlay adds. “It’s really flexible, you can tailor it do exactly what you want. There’s a very comprehensive EQ section built in to the reverb too. I’m using it on the drums, on some of Peter’s vocals, and on David Rhodes’ acoustic guitar. With two guitars on some songs, I need to separate them. I find using a subtle amount of Oxford Reverb helps define a space for each instrument.

“When we played the show mix back to Peter we put the ‘Warmth Function’ on the Dynamics plug-in across the entire mix, which he loved. So the whole show has that process added to it in varying degrees. That made the sign-off process much easier and was a bit of a lifesaver! Sonnox feels to me like a very solid brand, and the support is always great,” Findlay concludes.
