Fast, simple, sound: the LSP 500 PRO PA system from Sennheiser

The new LSP 500 PRO PA system from audio specialist Sennheiser will set new standards in the world of sound. The wireless LSP 500 PRO will be unveiled in the U.S. at InfoComm 2013 and offers outstanding sound and simple control via an app.

This innovative wireless loudspeaker ensures that the PA system for any event can be installed in next to no time. Not only does the wireless LSP 500 PRO eliminate the need for time-consuming laying of cables, Sennheiser also provides an app that enables up to 20 loudspeakers to be remotely controlled at the same time.

User-friendly control by an app

The entire PA system is controlled by the LSP 500 PRO app, which essentially takes over the functions of a mixing console. No matter whether it is the volume, the equalizer or the delay – the Sennheiser app makes it easy to control all of the audio settings. Configurations can be set either for individual speakers or for groups of speakers as well as for the audio sources connected to them.

“The app is a genuine labour-saving device for setting up PA systems at an event,” explained Martin Gurtner, Portfolio Manager at Sennheiser’s Integrated Systems Division. “This user-friendly and efficient application makes the Sennheiser LSP 500 PRO the ideal partner for events of all sizes, such as congresses, galas or press conferences.”

Highly versatile

Each Sennheiser LSP 500 PRO can take up to three receivers for wireless microphones, and each also has a combined socket for a 6.3 mm jack plug and an XLR-3 connector for using a wired microphone. The highly versatile loudspeaker is additionally equipped with a USB connector and a Bluetooth interface as well as an AUX input and output. If more than one loudspeaker is being used, one of them can be defined as the master and then connected with the other speakers – the slaves – via a wireless link.

Every LSP 500 PRO has a built-in music player that enables music to be played directly from an external device via the USB connector or the Bluetooth interface. The music player also has a convenient recording function which allows audio input to be recorded directly on a USB device. “Whatever the application, the LSP 500 PRO PA system provides Sennheiser’s usual excellent level of audio quality, which not only guarantees optimum speech intelligibility but also offers good sound for music,” explained Martin Gurtner.

Reliable operation with two batteries

The wireless Sennheiser loudspeaker has room for two rechargeable batteries but uses only one of them to supply power at any time. That ensures reliable operation and an operating period for the LSP 500 PRO of up to seven hours. The use of a second battery also allows the battery to be removed for recharging while the speaker is still in use. The current state of charge of each of the two batteries of a loudspeaker is shown continuously by the Sennheiser app, keeping the sound engineer informed about the power supply at all times. If a battery level becomes critically low, a warning is instantly displayed.

The LSP 500 PRO is compatible with microphones from Sennheiser’s evolution wireless 100, 300 and 500 series. The speaker comes with a dust cover. A white stretch cover, a padded rugged cover and a trolley bag for secure transportation are available as accessories.

The Sennheiser LSP 500 PRO loudspeaker will be available from summer 2013, and the app can be downloaded free of charge from the Apple iTunes Store from summer onwards.

Mikkel Heimburger Forays Into High Profile Movie Trailer and Sound for Picture Projects with Antelope Audio Orion32

Santa Monica, CA, May 9, 2013 – Mikkel Heimburger is a sound for picture composer focusing primarily on movies, film and television commercials and advertising. During the last several years, he has successfully repurposed his audio career, having previously been an engineer/producer, focusing on the pop music scene. Recently, Heimburger has been working on several high profile projects. He placed a song in the latest Al Pacino film Stand Up Guys, and composed, performed and mixed the trailer score for the most recent Muppet Movie. Each day he relies on his Antelope Audio Orion32 audio interface as the cornerstone of his Los Angeles-based studio.”I was a creator of dance, pop and urban music just a few years ago,” Heimburger says. “But now I am producing trailers and advertising segments that are diverse and creative, but also more lucrative.” Needless to say, he is working in a segment that has become increasingly competitive and saturated. Heimburger says that to stand apart, he must ensure that his productions are ‘as good as they can be.’ Therefore he depends on his Antelope Audio Orion32 to help set his music apart.

“The companies I am pitching to often receive dozens of tracks in a day — I want them to remember mine not only for writing and performance, but also for sonic quality,” he states. The Antelope Audio Orion32 is now a key component in his set up: “When I first heard it, I was blown away,” he says. “It has what many of today’s other converters are lacking – punch. I really need this for the trailers I am working on, and with the Orion32, it happens automatically — it is just there and I don’t have to adjust the EQ or manipulate the low end.”

For Heimburger, the main differentiator between the Orion32 and other well known high-end converters rests primarily on sonic quality. “I’ve been through a half a dozen audio interfaces during the last decade, just trying to keep up with technology changes in the market,” he says. “When I A/B’d the Orion32 against the other units I had from other manufacturers, suddenly they sounded way too thin and overly sibilant. I also noticed that many of these other converters introduce a ’3D effect’ that just wasn’t true.”

In addition to raising the overall sonic quality of his mixing rig, the Orion32 has introduced workflow efficiencies at cost savings that was unexpected, but most welcome. “The Orion32 is considerably less expensive than competitors’ models — you basically get a 32 channel interface for $3,000,” Heimburger observes. “Other models typically cost $3,000 for 8 channels, and don’t sound as good!”

Having access to no less than 32 tracks of Antelope Audio conversion at the output stage has enabled Heimburger to employ creative summing techniques, which he says has led to increased fidelity. “I am using every single output on the Orion32, and having all these channels means I can sum my mixes the way I want. I use the Orion32 in combination with my Shadow Hills Equinox, which is a 30 channel summing mixer. This combination has made a really big difference as far as the width and depth of my mixes are concerned,” he says.

All in all, the Orion32 has earned a place in Heimburger’s studio not only from a sonic perspective, but also feature and price. “In my opinion, the Orion32 wins hands down in every measure,” he concludes. “I am pretty sure the competition will need to rework their product strategies.”

Neumann Microphones Help RUNA Make Celtic Roots Music Come Alive

Old Lyme, Conn. – May 8, 2013 – RUNA is a Celtic roots band that fuses music from Ireland, Scotland, Canada and the U.S., creating refreshing contemporary arrangements of traditional, Celtic-based material. Now an internationally touring band that routinely plays at large national concert halls such as Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, the band quickly emerged from its humble beginnings playing coffee houses and dive bars in Philadelphia just four years ago.

RUNA’s live presentation is rich in its authentic Celtic instrumentation and dynamic storytelling through song — and is made all the more sonically engaging by the band’s choice of vocal microphone: the Neumann KMS 104 Plus and KMS 105 handheld condensers. This month on May 17th, the band returns ‘home’ to Philadelphia to sing the National Anthem before 40,000 some odd baseball fans at Citizens Bank Park to celebrate the Philadelphia Phillies’ Irish Heritage Night.

Lead singer Shannon Lambert-Ryan explains the band’s transition to Neumann on stage: “I had been using a popular competitor’s mic and someone suggested I try a Neumann,” she says. “We tried it at a gig and there was just no comparison. I heard better tone, warmth and clarity while singing through the KMS 104 Plus. It was like singing against silk, and I cannot speak highly enough about it.”

This year, they captured nominations in the Independent Music Awards for their song “Amhrán Mhuighinse” (Somewhere Along the Road), in the Irish Music Awards for Best Female Vocalist, and in the past have received multiple accolades from the Montgomery Buck Music Awards.

RUNA’s other vocalist, Dave Curley, has been using the Neumann KMS 105. “He was really struggling to find the right vocal mic that works for his voice, which is very gentle and has a different timbre than mine,” recalls Lambert-Ryan. “The first time he sang through the KMS 105 onstage, he said, ‘Wow – what is this?’ It was very smooth and had such a nice balance.”

For Lambert-Ryan, the Neumann KMS 104 Plus has given her more control over her vocal dynamics on stage: “Since we don’t have a bunch of electronic instruments happening in our style of music, the vocals tend to be much more ‘exposed.’ Therefore you need to hear all the nuances that are occurring,” she says. “With the KMS 104 Plus, Neumann has delivered here.”

Sennheiser Supports Cirque du Soleil’s “One Night for ONE DROP”

Las Vegas, May 6, 2013 – Recently, Cirque du Soleil presented “One Night for ONE DROP” at the “O” Theater, located in the Bellagio on the Las Vegas Strip. The one-night-only production, which combined talent and production expertise from seven other resident productions, was held on World Water Day on 22 March to help raise awareness on the increasing global water crisis. Audio specialist Sennheiser, which has a longstanding relationship with Cirque du Soleil that extends over two decades, loaned several channels of wireless equipment through its Global Relations team to help ONE DROP realize its creatively and technically ambitious production.
 
Established by Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté, ONE DROP is a non-profit organization whose mission is to ‘ensure that water is accessible to all, today and forever.’According to some estimates, nearly one billion people in the world live without clean drinking water, while another 2.5 billion people lack access to modern sanitation facilities. In the show “One Night for ONE DROP”, Cirque du Soleil illustrated the fragility of the Earth‘s water ecosystem and the impact of water needs around the world in beautiful stage sets, breath-taking artistics and music to remember.
 
Building on Enduring Success

One Night for ONE DROP was planned to run concurrently to “O”, Cirque’s resident show at the Bellagio since its 1998 opening. Therefore the Cirque team needed to augment the existing Sennheiser wireless system to accommodate the additional onstage talent. Gavin Whiteley, Technical Manager of Audio for Cirque du Soleil’s Resident Shows Division, reached out to Sennheiser to ensure the upgraded system would perform flawlessly and would meet the stringent technical demands of the show. “Sennheiser’s product line is not only proven industry-wide, but also within our own shows,” Whiteley says. “It is a known quantity and we knew we could count on it. Krista Monson’s [director] vision was to have more live musicians onstage than “O” normally does, so that’s when we were looking to get those additional resources in the theater so we could achieve her vision,” he recalls.

Kristy Jo Winkler, Sennheiser’s global relations manager for the Americas, comments: “Our relationship with Cirque du Soleil spans many years and Sennheiser has always maintained a deep and meaningful connection with the performing arts. We were inspired to play an integral role in ONE DROP – firstly because it represented another chance to push our technical boundaries and secondly because it was for such a worthwhile cause.”
 
“As soon as we got the call from Gavin, Sennheiser’s Global Relations team quickly provided ten additional wireless channels – all racked and preconfigurated so it would be ‘plug and play’ for this unique one-night spectacle,” explains Dave Missall, national market development, professional systems, Sennheiser USA.
 
Reinventing the Fundraiser, with a Little Help from Their Friends

“Our founder, Guy Laliberté, wanted to reinvent the fundraiser the same way he reinvented the circus 29 years ago,” says Gavin. “One Night for ONE DROP was to be performed only once, therefore we needed all our systems to be incredibly reliable and trustworthy.”
 
The 90-minute performance featured more than 230 artists and performers from neighboring Cirque du Soleil productions, an original composition for string quartet by award-winning film composer Danny Elfman, a dance piece choreographed by Sonya Tayeh of “So You Think You Can Dance”, a special guest performance by certified platinum recording artist Jackie Evancho and many other creative acts.
 
Gavin wanted to build on the capabilities of the wireless system that was already in place while using the existing frequency coordination and antenna distribution system – which had already been laid, filtered and optimized for the operation of the “O” show. “We wanted to work within our current frequency range so we didn’t have to open the doors to any new potential RF interference,” he says.
 
To accommodate ONE DROP, Gavin says he had to roughly double his wireless equipment to support additional instruments, singers and speaking parts – including Elfman’s string quartet composition, which was being performed in public for the first time. “It was a balance of working within the limits of the existing system, but still fulfilling the requirements each show needed to do it right.”
 
According to Sennheiser’s Dave Missall, reliable wireless performance is a critical dimension of any Cirque du Soleil production, especially for One Night for ONE DROP: “Everything has to be completely in sync, and of course you can’t have a wireless monitor or wireless instrument system fail,” he explains. “The entire show is timed perfectly from the very beginning, so precision and accuracy of cueing is everything.”
 
Flawless Performance from Beginning to End

In addition to the “O” Theater’s existing eight channels of Sennheiser EM 3732-II receivers, Sennheiser provided ten more channels of EM 3732-II receivers, eight SK 2000 bodypack transmitters, four SKM 5200-II handheld transmitters and two SK 5212-II beltpack transmitters to handle the additional wireless requirements of One Night for ONE DROP. “We ended up using all of it – on instruments, clowns, spoken word performers, you name it,” says Gavin.
 
One of the highlights of the show, Gavin says, was Danny Elfman’s string quartet, performed by musicians moving fluidly across the stage. “We used the extremely small SK 5212-II bodypack transmitters and mounted them either to the instruments themselves or directly on the performers,” says Gavin. “They were ideal for picking up the sound of each instrument.” Jackie Evancho sang through an SKM 5200-II wireless transmitter coupled with a Neumann KK 104-S capsule. “We asked her staff what kind of microphone she’s comfortable singing with, and they replied Sennheiser,” he says.
 
According to Gavin, the system performed flawlessly as expected from beginning to end: “Cirque is known for its visuals, its music and its top level production quality for every show it has in place. One Night for ONE DROP was no exception,” he says. “From a sound perspective, we wanted to get more of the audio quality we were already experiencing in “O”, one of Cirque’s longest running shows. We certainly achieved this and everyone was more than happy with how good it sounded.”

Moog Inducted into National Inventors Hall of Fame for Patent No 3475623, The Moog Ladder Filter

ASHEVILLE, NC – May 1, 2013 – Moog Music is proud to announce that today its founder Dr. Robert Moog will be posthumously inducted in to the United States Patent and Trademark Office National Inventors Hall of Fame.

Dr. Moog is being awarded this honor for Patent No. 3475623, more commonly known to Moog fans as the Moog Ladder Filter. Moog Music, which will be hosting Moogfest, its annual celebration of the innovative spirit of Dr. Moog on April 25th-27th 2014, has created a video featuring Moog hardware engineer Rick Shaich discussing the importance and innovation of this creation. In the video, Shaich discusses the Ladder Filter, the first Voltage Controlled Filter, which is the heart and soul of the Moog modular synthesizers of the 60s, the Legendary Minimoog of the 70′s, and is still the same filter topology used in all Moog Synthesizers to this day. The Ladder Filter is an essential element of the massive, thick sound for which Moog instruments are renowned.

To celebrate this historic occasion Moog Music is reissuing the Moog Ladder Filter Tee, which is now available for pre-order and will ship with a free poster commemorating Bob Moog’s induction to the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

Race Day at the Formula One Shanghai Grand Prix: The excitement mounts. Second only to the incredible spectacle of the cars is the intense sound, as the air fills with the roar of engines. The audio specialist has been named as the first Official Audio Supplier, supplying professional audio solutions for the Factory debriefs, driver interviews and powering the DJ booth in the exclusive Paddock Club. The cooperation will be kicked off at the Shanghai race with a special DJ set from Chinese superstar DJ, Jamaster A, and the creation of an exclusive edition of Sennheiser MOMENTUM headphones.

Infiniti Red Bull Racing has dominated the Formula One World Constructor’s Championships for three years, has the car to beat and a red-hot pairing of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber. A great start is all-important in Formula One: Sennheiser and Infiniti Red Bull will be launching the new relationship in style at the Shanghai Grand Prix, 11 – 14 April. Sennheiser will be wowing crowds with a very special DJ set by Chinese superstar, Jamaster A, who will perform for race visitors at the site entrance, equipped by Sennheiser. Later the party gets exclusive, as Jamaster A lays down the grooves for VIPs backstage in the prestigious Paddock Club, taking to the decks in the Sennheiser-powered DJ booth. At the European Races starting in Barcelona on 12 May, special guests of the Infiniti Red Bull Racing Team can enjoy professional sound additionally in the popular Red Bull Energy Station, which will be equipped with a Sennheiser wireless microphone system.

Throughout the season, the companies will be working together on a number of exciting projects that will take the sounds and sensations of Infiniti Red Bull Racing even further. Sennheiser Partners with Redbird, King Schools and AOPA on Headset to Accompany Redbird’s new Jay Flight Simulator

Lakeland, Fla., April 9, 2013 — Audio specialist Sennheiser announced that it has partnered with Redbird Flight Simulations, King Schools and AOPA to offer headsets that will accompany Redbird’s Jay desktop flight simulation system. The Jay system, which is being launched by Redbird at this year’s Sun ‘n Fun, is a consumer-oriented flight simulator that enables a broad base of aviation enthusiasts to access proficiency-based flight training. Beginning now, Sennheiser’s new PC 350 SE gaming headset will be available as an accessory for Jay in the AOPA store.

During the 2013 SUN ‘n FUN International Fly-In & Expo, Sennheiser, Redbird, AOPA and King will host a “Jay Challenge” launch event in which attendees of the expo will have a chance to win prizes including a ride with Team Aerostars and a Sennheiser S1 Passive headset. Participants of the challenge will be asked to complete various missions on the Jay simulator and fill in a logbook detailing their adventures, before being entered in a raffle for a chance to win various prizes.

Thinklogical Leads the Industry with New 4K Solutions

MILFORD, Conn. – Thinklogical LLC, a global manufacturer of secure fiber optic video and KVM routing and extension systems, today announced the introduction of two new Thinklogical SDIXtreme™ solutions to support the extension of SMPTE standard 4K signals.

The new Thinklogical solutions are able to extend 4K signals from four HD-SDI inputs or two 3G inputs over a single multi-mode or single mode fiber, with no compression, latency, artifacts or lost frames. The new products are in addition to Thinklogical’s previously released 4K solutions for single or dual link DVI signals.

The SMPTE 4K Digital Cinema standard references ultra-high definition (UHD) video delivered at a resolution of 4096 × 2160 pixels, twice the horizontal and vertical resolution of the 1080p HDTV format, with four times as many pixels overall.
