Martin Audio AQs Excel At Amble Links Holiday Park


Country and leisure park operators Park Leisure recently undertook a major upgrade of its Amble Links ‘owners-only’ holiday park on the Northumberland, England coast.

Preferred AV integrators Promotiontime NE carried out the technology design and outfitting of its main entertainment areas, The Links Owners Only Bar & Entertainment Lounge and refurbished Old Storehouse restaurant/bar, exclusively using a Martin Audio AQ solution for all of its requirements.

Brian Graham, who took over Promotiontime NE ten years ago, has been a frequent user of Martin Audio systems over the years, particularly the Blackline series, but the compact AQ architectural range has opened up a number of new opportunities for him.

“Martin Audio is generally our ‘go to’ brand for most requirements above a basic bar, and I would probably have specified Blackline again for the entertainment room. But when we heard the AQ series, we knew this would be equal to the demands of the room.”

The stage system needed to reinforce small acts, as well as a resident DJ and karaoke, but also needed to be used for larger performances when required.

After sampling the AQ series Graham specified a pair of AQ28’s, with dual 8in drivers, one each side of the stage, as the main front-facing PA with an AQ10 on each wing providing outfills. Recessed into the stage on each side is an AQ215 (2×15) bass enclosure with a 42-way patch so that incoming productions carrying their own mixing console can plug straight in and override the house desk.

The Old Storehouse is divided into two areas; a restaurant and bar, with background music fed to eight AQ6 in the main restaurant and a pair of AQ5s in the overspill/annex area, while the dedicated bar area is served by an additional combination of AQ8, AQ6 and pair of AQ112 (1×12) subs.

The music extends to the outside patio area where Brian Graham has specified four Martin Audio C115 surface-mount weather-resistant speakers.

The entire system is powered by Martin Audio MA5.2K, MA4.8Q and MA2.8Q amplifiers and fed by a 16×16 audio routing matrix, which allows any sound source to be switched to any zone via the Martin Audio Engineer 818 DSP. Limiting and EQ settings are also stored in the Engineer, with inputs recalled and switched between the different operating modes via the Control4 audio and lighting environmental control platform (linked to Mode dimming packs for the lighting).

The installation needed to offer ease of use and the site is configured so that all audio and vision can be switched and controlled from two touch screens, one located in the main bar and the other in the performance area, to allow intuitive use throughout the complex.

In summary, Brian Graham confirmed, “In addition to raising the performance level, we had to make the installation look sleek which the AQ certainly does. And with only around 10 ft. ceiling height in the entertainment room, we are able to run the AQ28s in landscape orientation, flush against the ceiling. It was the perfect solution.

“Everything works seamlessly; the client is absolutely delighted, the feedback has been great and we have had nothing but positive comments.”

3G Productions Supports Marc Anthony In The Round At Barclays Center

Marc Anthony recently capped off a series of successful engagements at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall, the Mohegan Sun Arena and Prudential Center with a triumphant Valentine’s Day weekend performance in the round at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

After successfully providing audio for the first three venues, 3G Productions was faced with the task of ensuring even coverage for Anthony and his 15-piece orchestra performing in the round from a revolving stage in the cavernous arena.

Asked about the challenges, 3G Crew Chief Will Taylor explained, “the biggest was taking the tour from a typical end stage configuration with 70 boxes to over 128 enclosures in the round. We used d&b J-Series during the tour and for Barclays, we flew four hangs of 14 for the longer throws at the ends of the arena and four hangs of 18 for the sides to get the vertical coverage we needed because the building is so tall, over 110 feet to the top seats. We also had 16 d&b J-sub and 8 J-Infra subwoofers that we combined with the barricades because the concert was sold out and we didn’t have the real estate to put them where we normally would.”

“The show sounded great,” Taylor continues, “but we had so many amps for the 360 degree coverage, we needed about 150 ft. of cable bridge to get from one end of the arena to the other with upwards of 400 ft. cable runs per cluster. But even with all of the musicians, background singers, boxes, cable, inputs and additional techs, the client was very happy with the coverage and how the show turned out.”

In this case, the client was Production Supervisor Roly Garbalosa who oversaw the tour for Marc Anthony and CMN (Cardenas Marketing Network). Roly was also fully aware of the challenge: “This was Marc’s first U.S. performance in the round with an orchestra that included 3 trombones, 2 trumpets, 3 percussionists, 3 background vocalists, keyboard, bass, guitar and piano rotating 360 degrees back and forth all night. Besides the eight J-Series hangs, we had 8 sidefill points hung with 3 d&b Q10s each because Marc relies heavily on those, especially for this situation.”

“I’ve known 3G Productions for a long time and typically they do a great show and are very professional. The key to this concert was the advance planning which we needed because we were hanging over 100 points on the same day. We came in at 5am, marked the floors, started working a six and were still polishing details at doors.

“As it turned out, the show sounded amazing and everyone really enjoyed it, including Marc. He brought us in after the show––which is rare––and gave us all high fives. He loved the sound and had a lot of fun.”

The overall system for this massive undertaking also included “racks and racks” of d&b D12 and D80 amps for house and monitors; d&b M2, M4 and Q1 speakers and B2 subwoofers for monitors; a DiGiCo SD7 for Front of House and SD10 for Monitors; Shure PSM 900 and Sennheiser G2 in-ear monitors; Shure, Sennheiser and Audix wired mics, and Shure Axient and Sennheiser 5200 wireless mics.

In addition to Marc Anthony’s Front of House/Band Engineer Jose Rivera and Monitor Engineer Eric “Pyle” Ramey; the 3G Productions crew included System Engineer/Crew Chief Will Taylor, Assistant Engineer Jon Daly, Monitor systems tech Joe “Big Joe” Ramos, and stage technicians Kevin Fuller, Robert “Boy” Valdez, and Jimmy Ibanez.

Summing up the show, Jose Rivera added: “It sounded a lot better than I expected. I’ve worked the room different times––never in the round––and it’s challenging from a coverage standpoint because it’s very high and steep. We wanted to make sure everyone who pays for a ticket enjoys the show. We went in with a very large rig and 3G made sure their pre-design work was done and we had the right amount of boxes to cover the room correctly.

“I had the opportunity to walk the room and the coverage sounded really good. Before we selected a vendor, we narrowed it down to two speaker systems and we’re happy we chose d&b.

Marc was ecstatic,” Rivera concludes. “There aren’t too many shows where he has the opportunity to listen to the band during soundcheck from the audience. For this show, he came in early to familiarize himself with the stage because he hadn’t done one in 360. And when I turned on the PA he was blown away and really impressed with the sound. He was comfortable and happy knowing the people were going to enjoy the show because the reinforcement represented what he and the band were going to do on stage.”

Martin Audio recently opened new MLA facilities including production and assembly areas, quality control and testing, along with additional warehousing.

Designed for MLA, MLA Compact and the new MLA Mini, the facilities will provide a space worthy of this premier system series and further improve Martin Audio’s overall service to its customers.

Since the introduction of MLA in 2010, the system has won multiple awards for innovation and has taken the market by storm. With the international success stretching around the globe from the US to UK and Japan, and now with the introduction of MLA Mini set to further popularize the technology, it was a necessity to develop these new facilities.

Importantly, the principles of 5S were introduced as an integral part of the new development. 5S originated in Japan and stands for the Japanese words seiri (tidiness), seiton (orderliness), seiso (cleanliness), seiketsu (standardization), and shitsuke (discipline), principles that lead to improved efficiency, service and safety.

ARC-Productions First Belgian Company To Back MLA Platform

Belgian pro audio and lighting specialists ARC-Productions have confirmed the purchase of 16-enclosure Martin Audio MLA Compact and Mini PA rigs, the first company in that country to do so.

Based near Ghent in Flanders, Marc De Baets’ sales and rental company has a long history with Martin Audio dating back to the purchase of a W8 Compact in 2001. He has subsequently invested in WT2, LE1200 and 1500s, WS 218X subs and W8LC.

“His complete speaker inventory has been made up of Martin Audio for many years,” confirms Steven Kemland of FACE, the manufacturer’s Belgian distributor, who serviced the recent order.

Marc De Baets had been operating under his own name before setting up ARC-Productions at the end of 2008 and had been in conversation with Kemland about the MLA from its inception. “The first time I heard the MLA was on the Summerfestival in Antwerp three ago,” he remembers. “I was particularly impressed with the MLX subs, not only the output but also the weight.

“The biggest advance of the MLA system is the even coverage, making it a great tool to counter undesired noise pollution, a very hot topic in Belgium. The compact size and weight, requiring less truck space, were other advantages.” Marc was also present at the MLA Compact European launch in London last year.

Steven Kemland takes up the story. “Marc first heard the MLA Mini in our demo room. The full MLA system is too big for a mid-range company but with MLA Compact and MLA Mini—supplemented by some DD6 and XD12 or DD12 cabinets—it is possible to manage any job between 100 and 10,000 capacity.”

De Baets had initially planned to buy only the MLA Mini version to run alongside his existing W8LC, but after considering the importance of the sound pollution problem in Belgium, he opted for a complete change and purchased 16 x MLA Mini and 16 x MLA Compact, with four MSX subs planned for next year. Meanwhile the system will be run with ARC-Productions’ WS218X subs.

Delivery is planned for the beginning of April, with system training in Belgium and the system will make its major debut at Leiepop Festival in early May before going on to do other festival work (as well as servicing ARC-Productions’ other busy work program).

Adds Steven Kemland, “Having conducted a lot of MLA demos, which have really got the market talking, it is important to have followed this up with our first system sale in Belgium. This investment is a big step up for ARC-Productions and gives them the opportunity for growth.”

In summary Marc De Baets promises this is just the start of his adventure into the world of MLA. “I really believe in this new technology,” he concludes.

Martin Audio Names Robin Dibble As Applications Engineer

To support the company’s consistent sales growth and further their credentials within the install space, Martin Audio has recruited the experienced Robin Dibble to the new position of Applications Engineer.

Dibble has a distinguished reputation within the industry having recently been the Head of Audio Engineering at RaceTech in London, and previously Project Engineer at Glantre Engineering in Reading. He is also a member of the Audio Engineering Society and an accredited technician in the Institute of Acoustics.

Martin Audio Sales Director, Simon Bull, said, “This appointment reflects the growth of the company and at the same time recognizes the need to bring in additional expertise to drive our installation business. Martin Audio OmniLine Upgrade At Most Holy Rosary Church

Brown Sound Equipment Company recently installed a Martin Audio OmniLine array in Syracuse’s historic Most Holy Rosary Church to upgrade the sound system and meet current standards for articulation and clarity.

Part of Most Holy Rosary Parish founded in 1913, the church dates back to the site’s original groundbreaking in 1927 through over 60 years of growth and expansion resulting in today’s remarkable construction that is central to the Catholic community in Syracuse.

Asked about the installation, Brown Sound President Jim Messinger begins by acknowledging that, “Having been in this business for over 45 years, it’s most satisfying when a customer repeats with you as in this installation at Most Holy Rosary Church; and that the technologies we now have at our disposal really do make a tremendous difference in outcomes.

“The Martin Audio OmniLine replaces a huge custom central cluster point source system we designed in 1991. The reverb time was the same then as it is now, approaching 4 seconds. These clusters with large long throw horns were the only ‘tools’ we had at the time to minimize splashing sound all over the place and still throw the energy 135’ to the last pew. Unfortunately, the cluster was large, ugly, black, and a visual distraction in front of that beautiful artwork above the altar. It also was a major challenge to install given the height, 53 feet to the peak of the Church. Everything had to be installed with a system of winches above the dome.”

Messinger recalls the OmniLine solution came down to “a matter of timing. I’d played with the idea of column type line arrays, but the church didn’t want the system to visually intrude on the altar and worship area. After a Martin Audio sales rep recommended OmniLIne, we did a demo at the church with a single module and it sounded very good; even in a big empty space.”

The installation is built around a 16-enclosure OmniLine array so compact, it is barely visible in the dome above the altar. A Mackie DL1608 iPad-controlled mixer replaces a “cumbersome” analog console for the music ministry microphones.

Messinger reports that Martin Audio’s array guide software made “assembly of the modules in this array extremely easy. The mechanics of the assembly are also well thought out and engineered. The coverage also allowed us to eliminate all of the original sidefill delay speakers.”

Summing up, Jim adds, “The bottom line is always comes down to ‘how does it sound?’ I attended a service when the pews were approximately 65% filled. Even after 45 years of listening to results, I was honestly impressed at how good, how articulate, and how natural the Martin Audio OmniLine sounded in this space. I’ve been in the business a long time and frankly I wasn’t expecting to be this impressed.

“The Director of Music mentioned that his choir members are very impressed with the system, they hear everything a lot better because there’s been so much of an improvement in articulation and clarity.”

Historic Lyric Theater Upgraded With Martin Audio

Miami, FL––Built in 1913, the Lyric Theater quickly became a popular entertainment center for African-Americans in Miami. It grew to be the anchor of “Little Broadway” in Overtown, eventually featuring artists such as Sammy Davis Jr., Count Basie, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, Celia Cruz, B.B. King, Patti LaBelle, Ella Fitzgerald, Redd Foxx, Mary Wells and others.

After closing in the 70s, the Lyric was purchased by the Black Archives, History and Research Foundation of South Florida in 1988. Since then, the venerable theater has undergone three major restorations and upgrades, culminating in a grand opening for the fully refurbished performance complex in early February.

Miami’s Drummer Boy Sound Productions did the consulting and design for the Lyric’s new audio and video systems. Asked why he chose Martin Audio for the upgrade, owner Harold Cummings responded, “My client Tim Barber, managing director of the Black Archives, had heard a Martin Audio system at one of my events and was impressed.

“The client wanted a high quality sound system that could be used for national R&B and Gospel acts and theater production events, that would properly cover the venue, and be accepted by touring engineers,” adds Harold.

“A line array wasn’t the right answer because the Lyric is a small 400-seater with a balcony and the sound would have been all over the place. Plus we needed a stereo-imaged room because the space also doubles as a movie theater.

“The Martin Audio W3P was the only speaker that made sense since it’s a compact 3-way trapezoid system with a tight pattern and 65º horizontal dispersion, which was key to this job,” Harold explains. “There weren’t that many speakers on the market with that type of dispersion, sound quality and high output capability in one package.”

Cummings’ system design includes four W3Ps flown from the proscenium wall, (one firing at the balcony and one at the main theater floor on each side) two Martin Audio AQ5s for stereo under balcony, two AQ5s for stereo front fill, and two WS218SX subs fitted into custom openings inside the stage. There are also Martin Audio LE1200s as stage monitors.

Other system components include an Allen & Heath iLive T112 console with iDR48 rack, Ashly Protea processor, Shure mics, a Whirlwind split snake system and cables.

Asked about the reaction to the audio system’s debut at a grand opening event called “Lyric Live” (an amateur hour contest for singers, bands and comedians from all over South Florida), Harold said, “Everyone thought the system sounded amazing and the coverage was incredible. You could hear perfectly in every single seat. We had more than enough headroom and plenty of low end, something that’s very important to me. With Martin Audio, I feel confident that no matter what kind of act comes in here, we have it covered.”
