Technotrix and Martin Audio Cover Musical Graduation Ceremonies

Chicago, IL––Because Columbia College Chicago specializes in arts and media, their commencement exercises in the Chicago Theatre and the outdoor arts festival showcase preceding it are characterized by a wide variety of musical styles, ensembles and performances.

This is the 16th year Technotrix of Calumet City, IL has provided audio, stage and lighting for the graduation festivities, depending on Martin Audio to reproduce the music with the accuracy, audio quality and even coverage demanded by the different events.

Held the day before commencement, the Manifest Urban Arts Festival is a showcase for all graduating students on three stages at various locations near the campus in the downtown Chicago Loop.

The outdoor stages feature jazz orchestras, rock bands, performance arts groups, musical theater, stage combat and more. Each has a Martin Audio PA system run by students who function as FOH and Monitors engineers and stage technicians.

Set up under a tent, the main stage had 5 Martin Audio W8LC enclosures a side with 12 ground-stacked WSX subs; 3 W8C, 2 WS218X and 1 WS18X for side fill and 10 LE12JB stage monitors. Stage 2, also under in a tent, used 2 W8C and 2 WSX subs a side with 6 LE12JB stage monitors. The smallest stage was set up in an outdoor garden area with 2 Martin Audio WT3, 2 WS218X subs and 4 LE12JB stage wedges to keep quality high.

Asked about the results, Technotrix’s Kevin Kiefer said, “We’ve been doing the Manifest event for a number of years with a formula that just keeps getting bigger and more complex over the years as they add more bands, musicians and different types of music. The College is very happy with the sound we provide using our Martin Audio system. In fact, they said this year was the best it’s ever been. We just try to raise the bar every time out.”

The graduation ceremony takes place the next day in the historic 3600-seat capacity Chicago Theatre. Featuring two small stages stacked one on top of the other stage left and right with different ensembles, and a 25-piece jazz orchestra and 20-piece gospel choir set up in the pit, coordinating and reproducing all of the music is challenging, to say the least.

“We were up to just over 100 channels of audio this year with the jazz ensembles, commencement choir and all of the small stages,” Kevin explains. “We’d have singers and a horn section on the upper level and keyboards and rhythm section on the lower level, and they all do a variety of different numbers – a constant challenge in terms of the onstage sound. Fortunately, we had a Martin Audio monitor system to help us stay on top of the mix.

Concluding, Kevin adds “We’ve been using Martin Audio for a long time because it differentiates us from our competitors. Martin Audio Introduces DD12 Powered Loudspeaker System At InfoComm

Las Vegas, NV––Martin Audio introduced the versatile new DD12 loudspeaker system at InfoComm 2014.

The multi-purpose DD12 defines the ultimate in performance and versatility for powered, two-way loudspeaker systems. It combines onboard networking, DSP and Class D amplification with state-of-the-art transducers and Differential Dispersion™ horn technology to achieve best-in-class performance in terms of fidelity, output capability and consistent coverage across the audience.

Differential Dispersion technology delivers more consistent audience coverage than systems with X° x Y° horns, providing more throw to the rear to distribute sound evenly front-to-back, with close-up horizontal coverage for the front rows.

Versatility is a key attribute of the DD12. The system is designed to meet a multitude of premium stand-alone and distributed sound reinforcement requirements, from touring, theater and portable live sound applications to concert hall and HoW installations, AV events and stage monitor use. Ideal as the main PA in small-to-medium size rooms, it can also be used as an infill loudspeaker in large-scale systems.

3G Productions Deploys Martin Audio MLA At EDC Las Vegas

This year’s Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas easily earned its reputation as the world’s largest electronic music festival with seven stages, carnival rides, art installations, fireworks displays and over 400,000 in attendance.

The landmark multimedia three-day event took place at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and focused on providing a total entertainment experience for EDM fans with over 70 DJs performing each day.

3G Productions of Las Vegas/Los Angeles, who once again provided audio for the event, set up a fully loaded Martin Audio MLA loudspeaker system on Stage Two (Cosmic Meadow) to deliver the power and huge amount of low end required for the shows. DJs featured on the stage included Diplo, Justin Martin, A-Trak, Chromeo, Bassnectar, Dillon Francis and Destructo, just to name a few.

The system for Cosmic Meadow stage consisted of 16 MLA and 2 MLAD enclosures per side, 12 MLA Compact per side for sidefills and 3 MLA Compact per side for front fills. More than the required amount of low end was provided by 40 MLX subs stacked one on top of the other along the front of the stage. A Yamaha CL5 console was used for Front of House and a Yamaha PM5D for Monitors.

Asked about the MLA, 3G’s Keith Conrad said, “the system performance each night was fantastic and the Martin Audio stage blew everybody away. The client (insomniac) was happy with the way MLA performed, the show was packed every day and the DJs and their engineers were really impressed with the system.

“Because Cosmic Meadow stage was facing out towards the speedway and wasn’t competing with any other stage,” Keith adds, “we got the full impact and power of the system, which was amazing. As it turned out, we didn’t even need delay towers because the coverage was so exceptional. This was due in part because of Martin Audio’s Display 2.1 modeling software.

“What makes EDC unique from other music genre festivals is the incredible amount of bass that’s required for EDM. The MLX subs were so powerful, the artists and their crews were smiling from ear to ear as soon as they turned it on.

“Of course,” Keith concludes, “we were fortunate to have our secret weapon FOH engineer Manny Perez who is definitely a veteran with MLA and knows how to tweak the system so it sounds exactly right from the low to high frequencies, which made it an ideal situation for everyone. Overall, I’d say that the system exceeded expectations from every aspect.

Fishman Expands Sales Force To Keep Pace With Recent Growth

Gary Lopez is a New England based vocalist/guitarist who’s been performing professionally since he was 17 and established himself in the Northeast as the front man for New Hampshire’s popular The Baker Street Band. Gary has shared the stage with Greg Allman and The English Beat, and performed in shows for President Bill Clinton. He has also been involved with music industry retail sales for over two decades working with Daddy’s Junky Music and Cambridge Soundworks.

Martin Audio MLA Goes The Distance At BottleRock 2014

Napa, CA––Under new management, BottleRock 2014 provided three days of exceptional music, food and drink without any of the problems that affected last year’s trial launch.

As Jason Alt of Delicate Productions, provider of audio, video and lighting for the event points out, “This year’s festival was smoother, more organized and better run. Participating vendors and artists were taken care of in advance and everyone had a very positive festival experience.”

The eclectic lineup for the festival included The Cure, Outkast, Weezer, TV On The Radio, Heart, Third Eye Blind, Blues Traveler, Spin Doctors, Gin Blossoms and dozens more bands, solo artists and comedians that spanned a range of styles and musical generations.

Once again, Delicate provided Martin Audio MLA and MLA Compact loudspeaker systems for the two main sponsored stages, Toshiba and Sprint, to ensure proper coverage within the festival grounds and output control to prevent noise overspill in surrounding residential neighborhoods.

“The city of Napa didn’t have a noise ordinance until after last year’s event and we teamed with the city to establish one that would work for the festival and the city,” Jason explains. “We came up with 105dB C-weighted at front of house, 110 feet from the stage, measured over an hour period average. This gave us enough latitude for bands to get louder for ten minutes at a time, which allowed for dynamics within that average without adversely affecting any artist’s performance.

“None of the artists or engineers had any issues with the noise ordinance. Even with the newly imposed time restrictions of stopping by 10pm, the festival went really well. And we had no noise complaints from those living near the festival site either.”

Part of this year’s new PA guidelines included removing the delay towers from the main stage to eliminate excess noise, which had no negative impact on coverage according to Alt. “It made the throw for MLA about 600 feet and the system still performed really well. The audience listening experience didn’t suffer at all. People were able to hear it and everything sounded really consistent and clear.”

The Toshiba main stage system consisted of two speaker clusters a side, each consisting of 16 Martin Audio MLA and two MLD (downfill) enclosures; 24 ground-stacked MLX subs; 12 W8LM speakers for front fills; two clusters for side fills, each containing 4 W8C, 4 W8CS compact subs, and 2 WS218X subs; and 6 MLA Compact each as side hangs.

An Avid Profile 96/24 console was used for FOH, and Yamaha PM5D-RH, DSP5D and Avid Venue 48/24 consoles were used for Monitors. Six Shure UHF-R wireless systems with SM58 capsules were also part of the main stage setup.

For the second (Sprint) stage, Delicate combined 18 Martin Audio MLA Compact enclosures per side with 12 DSX ground-stacked subs; 2 side fill clusters containing 2 W8Cs, 2 W8CS compact subs and a WS218X sub; 4 W8LCs for front fills and Martin Audio LE1200S and LE2100S stage monitors to complete the package.

Asked about MLA, Outkast FOH engineer Darcy Khan replied, “I enjoyed the system a lot. The most important thing was the clarity at 200 feet. I was skeptical about that because a lot of line arrays claim to have it but don’t deliver. And this is the only system I’ve come across that can produce enough low end with just 24 subs, but the way Delicate set it up with that block across the front of the stage, it was there. I was very pleased with it, the system really delivered the goods.”

Concluding, Jason added, “Overall the MLA’s performance exceeded our expectations. Everybody was very impressed with what the system was able to do and all of the engineers, many of whom were new to the system, had a great mixing experience with it.”

Martin Audio Strengthens Growth With Strategic New Hires

As part of an ongoing process of preparing for the next wave of growth, Martin Audio has recently made several strategic new hires.

First, Bash Akhtar has joined Martin Audio as Operations Director. He has previously served as Operations and Manufacturing Director of RLC Callender, Smiths Detection, and Harmonic Inc. Bash has earned a Fellowship in Manufacturing Management from Cranfield University and is a Manufacturing Systems Engineer from the University of Hertfordshire.

David Morbey has joined as the company’s first dedicated Product Manager. He has previously served as Global Product Marketing Manager at D&M Professional.

Commenting on the hires, James King, Director of Marketing, said, “We’re delighted to have Bash and David join us as we continue to build a world class team. Their expertise will enable us to further grow the business and support our customer base.

Martin Audio MLA Compact Takes Control At Sun Valley Community Church


The Tempe campus of Sun Valley Community Church recently installed a Martin Audio MLA Compact loudspeaker system as a key component in a significant upgrade of its technical capabilities.

According to Eric Johnson, Technical Director for Sun Valley, “Sun Valley Tempe merged with Bethany Church two and a half years ago and we inherited a large campus and an auditorium with technical capabilities that were deficient by today’s standards. The audio system was old and primarily designed for natural speech, orchestra and choir reinforcement in an acoustic setting. That, plus the building is a complex geometrical design, basically a five-sided pentagon with a seven-sided auditorium that’s about 160 degrees wide, has a raked floor, many complex angles and no parallel surfaces. Needless to say, this presented a real challenge when it came to choosing a new loudspeaker system.

“The original system had worked for many years,” Johnson continues, “but changing times, culture and styles made us realize that it no longer served our purposes for electric rock and roll style music. We decided on a major renovation that involved changing the seating from traditional pews to modern theatre style seats and going from a totally carpeted floor to carpeting only in the aisles. We also reduced the size of the stage, pulling back the downstage edge by about twelve feet in addition to upgrading the lighting and audio system.

“And there was a real concern as to whether or not we could put in a system that would adequately reinforce rock and roll without overwhelming the live-sounding room. So we discussed acoustically treating the room, which would have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, or completely tearing down the ceiling and remodeling the room from the inside which wasn’t feasible either.”

Fortunately, Johnson was aware of the Martin Audio MLA system having first heard it several years ago during a demo at Comerica Theater in downtown Phoenix. “I had an idea of what the technology was about,” he points out, “but I was really impressed with what I heard. The possibility of MLA and the MLA Compact system specifically, led us to realize that the technology would allow us to precisely control the audio output and put the energy onto the seats while keeping it off the ceilings and walls. So that’s the direction we decided to pursue.”

The installed system for the 1300-seat auditorium consists of nine MLA Compact enclosures per side in left-right hangs with seven Martin Audio DSX subs in bunkers arranged in arc formation along the downstage edge. Two WT3 speakers for extreme left and right outfill and six DD6 speakers for front fill complete the system with Martin Audio MA3.0 and MA2.8Q amplifiers and a Merlin Processor that manages the outfills and front fills, as well as communications between the speakers. The rest of the setup currently includes a Soundcraft MH2 40-channel Desk at FOH Sennheiser Evolution Series wireless and DPA microphones.

Johnson adds that the installation team, which included Ed Crippen from Clark, the system integration company, Jon Hunsacker and Kevin Hull from SVCC and Sean Stinson’s ream of riggers from Clearwing, had to bring in a considerable amount of additional power to accommodate the new lights and audio system since the building was already over capacity for electrical service.

Completed in the first week of April, the system debuted on Palm Sunday and according to Eric, “it was an overwhelming success. Ed Crippen was there for the whole weekend, which included rehearsals and the first service. He was taking measurements for the service and one of the things we discovered during the sermon was that real-time intelligibility readings were off the charts. He had never seen intelligibility readings that high. The first time our pastor Chad Moore who uses hearing aids, stepped on the stage and spoke through the microphone he said, ‘I can finally hear myself.’

“There was a band playing that averaged between 95dB and 104dB with subs which was clear and not too loud. With the MLA Compact, the musicians can now focus on the nuances and subtleties of their music that can finally be heard without overwhelming the space. I even had to adjust the drummer’s toms because we could hear them rattling against the support post.

“When we went to the portion with just the pastor speaking downstage, we averaged 72dB over a ten minute window,” Eric confirms. “Not only was it loud enough, it was incredibly clear and you felt as if he was talking right in front of you at 72dB. It’s unheard of to put a message out at that volume and not suffer any fatigue because it’s not loud enough. We’re still talking about that one!”

Johnson notes that the overall process of assembling the system took the better portion of a year and required that he put the installer and speaker company together because “Clark was not a Martin Audio dealer and I wanted MLA Compact in the building. Ed and I attended an MLA training class in Las Vegas and that’s when he really lit up and got what the system was all about. It turned out to be a full-fledged collaboration between Sun Valley, Clark and Martin Audio.”

Summing up about the impact of MLA Compact on Sun Valley, Johnson concludes, “One notable thing that happened on the first Sunday we used system is that the doors from the worship center out to the lobby are usually opened up when it’s time to come in the room, but it was a nice day so the exterior doors from the lobby out to the patio were also open. One person commented that the reason he came in was that when the music started, he could hear our worship leader as clear as a bell all the way out onto the patio, which we could never do before the MLA Compact.”
