Haivision Makito HD Encoders Power Live Video Distribution for Marlins Park

New IP Video Installation from Daktronics and Haivision Boosts Fans’ Game Day Experience

MONTREAL and CHICAGO — August 22, 2013 — Haivision today announced that the Miami Marlins are using Haivision’s Makito HD video encoders to stream live video of the games to fans throughout Marlins Park on more than 700 flat-panel screens in private suites, concourses, clubs and retail shops.

Working with Daktronics, a leading provider of display technology and media control systems for stadiums and venues, the Miami Marlins have deployed Haivision’s Makito encoders to bring real-time video of the game into one of the most sophisticated large screen and IPTV systems in the world. For Daktronics and the Marlins, HD over IP yields significant flexibility in system design and media control. For Miami Marlins fans, the integrated system gives them the confidence to leave their seats, explore the ballpark and visit concessions and retail areas, without missing any key moments of the game.

With extremely low latency, highly efficient H.264 video compression, and 1080p60 video quality, Haivision’s Makito HD encoders are designed for IPTV and HD digital signage, providing real-time live action with imperceptible delay. The Marlins can now show the game from different angles on the field, display video from other games in progress, and include any other type of dynamic audio and video content to entertain the crowd.

“The digital display technology, featuring the Haivision Makito HD encoders at the center, is a huge part of the game day presentation,” said Claude Delorme, Executive Vice President, Operations and Events, Miami Marlins. “We relied on Daktronic’s expertise in choosing the right products and solutions to create our display and video system, and we were not disappointed. The Makito’s low latency features and superior audio and video content delivery were key in making them the perfect encoding choice for us. Marlins Park is now capable of delivering video over IP, successfully creating the ultimate experience for our fans.”

“Daktronics creates exceptional fan experiences within stadiums and other venues,” said JoAnne Gaudreau, vice president of marketing at Haivision. “Integrated video distribution plays a key role in fan engagement and participation. With the Makito, the Marlins deliver immediate media experiences to fans wherever they are by taking advantage of high quality low latency video over IP throughout multiple venues.”

“The advantages of network video are clear for large scale deployments, but we needed to avoid the pitfall of solutions that introduce significant delay between the action on the field and the displays within public areas and private boxes,” said Matt Anderson, control systems marketing manager for Daktronics. “There’s nothing more important in the sports world than right here, right now, and that’s why real-time, low latency is so important. Haivision’s Makito combines the best HD picture quality with incredible performance allowing us the flexibility to deliver video anywhere within the facility with ease.”

Haivision First to Achieve Common Criteria Certification for Video Encoders

Makito Video Encoders Support International Standard for Consistent Platform Security and Integrity

MONTREAL AND CHICAGO — August 14, 2013 — Haivision today announced that its Makito™ product line of video encoders achieved the Common Criteria certification, the international standard for information technology security. Haivision products, Makito, Makito Air, and Barracuda™, are the first video encoders to receive this certification.

Haivision’s Common Criteria certification allows customers to meet U.S. federal government and international information assurance and security requirements, such as the U.S. Department of Defense Information Assurance Certification Process (DIACAP). This certification ensures that program managers and IT staff can dramatically accelerate the time and effort required to acquire and deploy new solutions.

Led by the National Information Assurance Partnership (NIAP), a joint initiative of the U.S. Government’s National Security Agency (NSA) and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the Common Criteria international standard ensures that products achieve a highly repeatable level of platform security and integrity.

Haivision’s Common Criteria certification bolsters the company’s strong history of supporting security requirements of U.S. federal customers, including the Certificate of Networthiness (CON) from the U.S. Army and an Authority to Operate (ATO) throughout the U.S. Air Force. In addition, the Makito and Makito Air were the first 1080p60 encoders certified by JITC, the Joint Interoperability Test Command of the U.S. Department of Defense.

Haivision’s Makito, Makito Air, and Barracuda low-latency, Common Criteria video encoders are heavily relied upon by federal and military organizations for mission-critical video applications. Makito encoders are recognized for their low-latency and high quality, HD full motion video (FMV) compression combined with Key Length Value (KLV) metadata support required by mission systems supporting both ground and airborne intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR).

“Our goal is to continue to raise the bar for uncompromising security and integrity standards, delivering the most reliable solutions for our federal customers,” said Mirko Wicha, president and CEO of Haivision. “With our JITC certification and ISO achievements, Haivision has a strong reputation for delivering enterprise and military-grade solutions according to rigorous industry standards. This new Common Criteria certification continues that mission and ensures our customers have what they need to easily select and deploy solutions they can count on.”

Now listed on NIAP’s Product Compliant List (PCL), the Makito product line of video encoders were evaluated and accredited at licensed and approved evaluation facilities for conformance to the Common Criteria for IT Security Evaluation (ISO Standard 15408). Certified Makito and Barracuda encoders are now shipping with firmware 2.1.1 and comply with the Common Criteria Protection Profile for Network Devices Version 1.1. The new firmware promotes consistent security practices and includes features to support platform integrity, administration auditing and event logging.

Haivision’s Common Criteria Certificate specifying all certified products can be viewed at:www.haivision.com/files/common-criteria-certificate. For more information on the Common Criteria certification, please visit: www.haivision.com/markets/federal.

Address tomorrow’s IP video challenges – HEVC Encoding, MPEG-DASH and Hybrid Encoding™ Technology from Haivision’s HaiGear Labs

At IBC 2013, Haivision will preview advanced technology initiatives as part of its HaiGear Labs demonstrations. These new technology advancements address the latest video compression and delivery standards, introducing a progressive application of hardware and software optimization. Haivision will demonstrate:

  • End-to-end live streaming of HEVC, including both software-based encoding and decoding implementations of the next generation HEVC (high-efficiency video coding) H.265 codec. The bandwidth efficiency associated with the adoption of HEVC promises to greatly expand delivery of high-quality, high-resolution video over bandwidth-constrained networks.

  • MPEG-DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) in an end-to-end live streaming environment, simplifying and converging an HTTP segmented format for the delivery of IP video to help drive down costs and enable better content to be offered to IP video audiences.

  • Hybrid Encoding technology, a blended approach to CPU and GPU utilization for the encoding or transcoding processes. The benefit of Hybrid Encoding is that a single software-based platform can get combined density gains of GPU acceleration while maintaining the quality gains of pure software on CPU. Haivision’s initial approach is to take advantage of the latest Intel™ CPU technology, which incorporates GPUs directly as cores within the chip.

Haivision’s online video platform provides a complete solution for companies to engage their audiences with dynamic media content, regardless of network or device.

With a surge in appetite for video consumption, companies continue to invest in video to communicate their messages to employees, partners and customers for activities like corporate training, product launches and live events. However, video management and delivery has become increasingly challenging due to the diversity of solutions, mobile devices, platforms and video formats. As a result, companies are often required to piece together multiple solutions and vendors to get what they need.

The Haivision Video Cloud simplifies the complexity associated with the management and publishing of video by integrating on-premise source encoding, file-based and live transcoding, media management, microsite builder, automated publishing and feed management, and viewer-based real-time analytics. With more than 20,000 encoders fueling the world’s top organizations with HD video, Haivision is a global leader in delivering media within and beyond the enterprise. The Haivision Video Cloud is built on field-proven streaming technology that is already deployed at thousands of organizations, including BP, Cardiovascular Research Foundation, the European Commission, National Geographic and Northwestern University, and has powered numerous events, including the London 2012 Olympic Games, The Masters and the MTV Movie Awards.

With Calypso, subject matter experts can monitor multiple sessions, choose to record any or all of the contributing streams, assign metadata to sessions or events in real-time, and elect to share or remove viewing privileges at any time. Calypso’s scalable platform provides high performance H.264 recording performance, with up to 50 HD streams simultaneously recorded on a single server appliance.

Calypso combines extensive multi-source capabilities with real-time metadata (HotMarks™) to give organizations an effective way to make assessments based on understanding aggregated information. Designed for mission-critical content requirements, Calypso provides simplified record and review workflows, allowing users to quickly share, authorize and de-authorize live and on-demand media assets instantly.

“Our vision is to help organizations leverage the power of media,” said Peter Maag, chief marketing officer at Haivision. “Haivision’s Calypso combines recording power and media management, low latency video distribution, and simple, effective workflows to get real-time information to audiences that need it most.”

As a high power network video recorder, Calypso leverages the extreme low latency and high quality encoding characteristics of Haivision’s Makito X2 and Makito high performance HD H.264 encoders. The new Makito X2 has set industry benchmarks for low bitrate quality and encoding density with up to 12 1080p60 HD channels in one rack unit.

Additional Calypso features include:

  • In-context viewing, recording and playback
  • Multi-source viewing and associations
  • On-the-fly access control
  • Real-time HotMarks metadata

Haivision will showcase the new Calypso platform at the NAB Show in Las Vegas on April 8-11 at booth SL6605. More information about Haivision’s Calypso is available at www.haivision.com/products/calypso.

Haivision Announces the General Availability of Makito X2 – the Highest Density H.264 HD Encoding Appliance

Haivision’s Makito X2 delivers extreme quality to reduce bandwidth needs by as much as 50 percent and provides the highest HD encoding density available for live streaming

MONTREAL and CHICAGO — March 21, 2013 — Haivision today announced the general availability of Makito™ X2, the company’s next generation, dual channel, low-latency HD-SDI H.264 encoder. The Makito X2 is the first Haivision product to incorporate the company’s Makito X Series technology, delivering higher quality video to meet HD streaming challenges at a significantly reduced bitrate. The Makito X2 also achieves the highest 1080p60 H.264 encoding density supporting up to 12 sources in a single rack unit chassis.

The Makito X2 carries forward the extreme performance of the original Makito with 55 millisecond encoding latency. Tailored for the most demanding enterprise, medical, and military applications, the Makito X2 also supports multi-bitrate (MBR) streaming and can output 4 different stream bitrate profiles per source (from 32 kbps to 25 Mbps) over MPEG transport stream or RTMP. Other advanced and mature features, many inherited from the Makito, include downscaling, de-interlacing, deblocking, forward error correction, encryption, closed captioning, and key length value (KLV) metadata for full motion video (FMV) applications.

“In order to address today’s video workflows within the enterprise and across the Internet, system designers look for bandwidth efficiency,” said Mirko Wicha, president, and CEO of Haivision. “Not only does the Makito X2 yield the same quality at half the bandwidth, it couples this with remarkable density, performance, and features so our clients can address mission critical applications.”

Haivision’s low latency encoder is ideal for virtually any streaming challenge, including video backhaul, interactive applications, HIPAA compliant streaming in healthcare, delivering critical video feeds to financial traders and general purpose campus IPTV. The Makito X2 can also support enterprise head-end projects such as delivering HD channels throughout a facility over secure, encrypted multicast video using Haivision’s Furnace to centrally manage set top boxes and performance multiview players for broadcast monitoring. Supporting multi-bitrate streaming and a variety of stream encapsulations, the Makito X2 delivers high quality video to decision makers, collaborators, and casual users regardless of location, network, or device.

Haivision will demonstrate the Makito X2 at the NAB Show in Las Vegas on April 8-11 at booth SL6605.
