BrightSign Demonstrates 4K Advances at NAB 2014

BrightSign, LLC®, the market leader in digital signage media players, announced that its new 4K digital signage media players will be demonstrated at NAB 2014 in the Elemental Technologies and Tightrope Media Systems booths. The company also revealed today that its 4K players will support MPEG-DASH, which enables high-quality streaming of media content over the Internet.

“4K opens up so many possibilities in digital signage and other industry applications, but it’s important to understand and avoid the potential pitfalls of a wrongly deployed 4K system,” said Jeff Hastings, BrightSign’s CEO. “As BrightSign continues to expand into the 4K market, we are working with a wider range of partners and demonstrating new technology for supporting the 4K ecosystem at NAB.”

MPEG-DASH is critical when it comes to broadcasting 4K content via the Internet. The protocol takes content from standard HTTP servers and separates that content into individual segments, enabling network bandwidth optimization in real time for maximum streaming efficiency. Efficiencies are maximized because the highest possible bit rate segment will be streamed at any given time, depending on the network resources available at that time. And because network resources fluctuate constantly, MPEG-DASH continuously evaluates those resources to maximize playback quality, without causing stalls or requiring re-buffering. Optimizing playback quality and eliminating the risk of network overload are important, especially when broadcasting movies, live sporting events or other lengthy content.

“BrightSign and Elemental are like-minded in their pursuit of 4K in its purest, most impressive form,” said Keith Wymbs, chief marketing officer for Elemental. “Our ongoing interoperability work with BrightSign has yielded a complete 4K solution for digital signage, and we expect BrightSign’s new players to catalyze growth in the marketplace as it shifts to 4K.”
This past weekend BrightSign demonstrated the latest 4K video technology at the JB&A Video Workflow Pre-NAB Event. BrightSign demonstrated its new 4K player – the industry’s first sub-$1,000 commercial-grade solid-state digital signage media player – the only player of its kind to deliver true 4K, with H.265 encoding and HDMI 2.0 for playback at 60 fps.

Additionally, BrightSign’s players power 4K demonstrations in several NAB booths, including Elemental Technologies (booth #SU2724) and Tightrope Media Systems (booth #C6508).

Insteo, BrightSign, Philips Commercial Signage and Peerless-AV Team to Create DSE 2014 Entry Way Signage

Insteo, BrightSign, Phillips Commercial and Peerless-AV announced today their collaboration to deliver a dramatic ‘Social Buzz’ wall and Entry Archway for DSE 2014. These video walls serve as a welcome to all attendees and highlight top social media posts and photos from Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram and Flickr.

DSE assembled an all-star team to create the entry display comprised of two video walls at the entryway to DSE 2014. BrightSign is providing its market-leading solid-state players that distribute content to Philips displays secured with Peerless-AV mounts.

The entryway includes two video walls – an elevated, eight-display archway running welcome messaging video loops, and an eye-level social media ‘Buzz Wall’ also comprised of eight displays. Although BrightSign players support HTML5 social media templates from the Insteo library, Insteo instead chose to implement an all-video solution that offers a more dramatic, curated and innovative presentation. Insteo’s creative team uses the powerful BrightSign Network to keep the video walls fresh and up to date.

“Insteo is more commonly known for HTML5 digital content, but our background is originally in motion graphics and animation,” said Jim Nista, CEO & creative director at Insteo. “We recognized that a pre-rendered video loop wouldn’t fit with the need for up-to-date social buzz – but we wanted to showcase more dynamic motion graphics. We’re using BrightSign Network to deliver frequent updates so we can have the best of both – eye-catching rendered video and fresh content.”

Insteo’s staff in Long Beach, California will curate social media content from around the web and render out new videos frequently throughout the show. These videos will push over the BrightSign Network and feed the eye-level displays to keep content relevant. BrightSign players control Ethernet synchronization of brilliant Full HD video wall content, and BrightSign Network provides the ability to send updates remotely.

“We’re dedicated to strengthening partnerships within the digital signage industry and continuing our work with DSE. It is always an honor to be selected by show management for the prestigious responsibility of powering an entry installation that becomes more impressive each year,” said Jeff Hastings, BrightSign’s CEO. “The selection of BrightSign players is a testament to the reliability and flexibility of our solid-state platform.”

In addition to providing video content for the entryway, DSE selected Insteo to create an interactive registration map to illustrate the global origins of show attendees. Motion graphics on the social media wall show attendees how to register on a digital map, located near the entryway. This registration map, created by Insteo and powered by Elo Touch, Peerless-AV and Cradlepoint, allows DSE 2014 visitors to use their smartphones to add themselves to the map to highlight the international diversity of this year’s DSE attendance.

BrightSign 4K Digital Signage Media Player Takes 4K to New Heights

BrightSign, LLC®, the market leader in digital signage media players, took the wraps off its much-anticipated 4K digital signage media player. While a handful of niche players claim 4K support, BrightSign’s new player is the first to deliver a true end-to-end 4K solution that accepts H.265-encoded content and delivers 60 fps output via HDMI 2.0. Each of these characteristics is necessary to deliver a true 4K solution, and BrightSign is the first to deliver on all fronts.

“There’s a great deal of excitement and anticipation around 4K, but unfortunately many of the purported 4K solutions currently available fall short and don’t deliver a true 4K experience,” said Jeff Hastings, CEO of BrightSign. “However our BrightSign 4K player complies with the new standards to preserve video quality from encoding to output and support the complete 4K ecosystem, start to finish.”
4K in the digital signage market has been met with much enthusiasm, as well as some confusion about how to deliver “true” 4K. For content to remain 4K native and be delivered at the highest visual quality, video must be captured on a 4K-capable camera, encoded and decoded using the new H.265 compression standard at 10 bits/channel, and fed to the display via HDMI 2.0 to preserve the original 60 fps frame rate. Any broken link in this chain of events adversely impacts video quality and the output falls short of what 4K is made to be.
Elemental Technologies supplies the encoding horsepower required to deliver a true 4K viewing experience. Elemental is the first to implement the HEVC specification with the capability of processing 4Kp60 H.265 content in real-time. The company’s award-winning work in HEVC video processing helps BrightSign create the high-quality viewing experience available with its new player.
“Early 4K claims should be met with scrutiny, as some vendors rush to bring 4K solutions to market that lack the technical components essential to preserving 4K content as it’s encoded and passed through the player for display,” said Keith Wymbs, VP of marketing at Elemental. “We look forward to working closely with BrightSign to deliver encoded HEVC content of the highest quality to create an immersive digital signage experience.”
True 4K output possesses two primary characteristics; a resolution of 3840×2160, and a frame rate of 60 fps. The BrightSign 4K is the first player of its kind to successfully playback both.

BrightSign Sets the Tone at China’s Largest Car Showroom

AKD Luxury Cars Mall is using 350 BrightSign players to power the 700 screens that set the tone at its brand new car dealership in Shenzhen, China’s largest vehicle showroom.

Opened in 2013, the 1.29M-square foot AKD Luxury Cars Mall accommodates 3,000 luxury vehicles and is a magnet for car enthusiasts amongst China’s fast-growing affluent professional community. It specializes in high-end used cars, including exclusive marques like Bentley and Lamborghini, as well as luxury brands such as Mercedes Benz, BMW, Porsche, Lexus, Land Rover and Audi.

Commenting, Mr. William Ng of AKD Luxury Cars Mall said, “Our clients are highly fashion conscious and AKD caters for them by providing a first class car buying environment that compares favorably with an exclusive shopping mall. For our new premises, we specified 700 display screens delivering synchronized video across each of five floors. As one of the world’s best-known independent dealers in high-end used cars, we welcome visits and inspections from the vehicle manufacturers including BMW, Mercedes Benz, Volkswagen and Toyota. They expect to see their vehicles presented in an environment that does full justice to their high-quality engineering.”

AKD Luxury Cars approached the CAS Group, a leading Chinese digital signage specialist, for support in implementing this vision. Anson Ng, Managing Director of the CAS Group said, “AKD wanted to create a real impression with the screens in its showroom, so it was absolutely essential that every screen works perfectly all day, every day. With over 100 screens on each floor, a single screen that is blank or isn’t perfectly synchronized with the neighboring displays looks really bad. We recommended BrightSign HD220 players because they are totally reliable. It was straightforward to set up the synchronization through the file networking provided by the supporting BrightAuthor content management software. Content is stored on an SD card on the player and regularly refreshed from the central server via the showroom’s Intranet. AKD sources content from the manufacturers of the vehicles it sells, and also creates its own content.”

The new AKD Luxury Cars Mall features 700 42” displays fitted to the front and back of each pillar on every floor of the showroom. The screens are powered by 350 BrightSign players, each driving two screens via a 1×2 HDMI splitter. Each floor plays its own content, which is identical on each screen on that floor. Synchronization between the screens is flawless – every screen shows the same video at exactly the same time, and is controlled and synchronized through the showroom Intranet and BrightAuthor software. The CAS Group provided the players, programmed the players and tested the installation to ensure that it was working flawlessly.

Digital Out Of Home Advertising Shines at Austin Fan Fest 2013

BrightSign, LLC®, the market leader in digital signage players, today announced that it has partnered with Zephyr Media Inc. to deliver a high-impact Digital Out Of Home (DOOH) advertising network for Austin Fan Fest 2013, the interactive festival that runs in parallel with the Formula One 2013 United States Grand Prix. The four-day festival – which occupies 12 square blocks in historic downtown Austin – includes dozens of interactive and educational displays, as well as dining, entertainment and live music at every turn.

“Austin is known the world over for its ability to put on a show, and F1 racing is at the pinnacle of automotive engineering,” said Luke McEvoy, Zephyr Media’s vice president of marketing. “Working closely with BrightSign, we created a powerful DOOH network that reflects that fast-paced entertainment and cutting-edge technology.”

Festival attendees are drawn by activities for all ages. The event includes six stages hosting countless activities for children, families and race fans, including some of music’s hottest acts, an X-Games action sports zone, food trucks, and F1 race car simulators and interactive exhibits.

“Large-scale outdoor events provide a massive audience that advertisers have traditionally struggled to reach – that all changed with the advent of powerful DOOH ad networks,” said Jeff Hastings, CEO of BrightSign. “Zephyr Media is a great partner, and working together we’ve created a compelling advertising platform that yields great ROI for sponsors of this year’s Austin Fan Fest.”

For event sponsors, Austin Fan Fest 2013 delivers a captive audience of elite motorsport fans in a festive mood – individuals with a high level of disposable income. Zephyr Media’s DOOH Network takes advantage of this dynamic, engaging market and enables advertisers to successfully target this audience.

While Zephyr Media’s DOOH Network was conceived initially to deliver high-impact advertising for event sponsors, the network is also being used as part of a pro bono effort to raise awareness for relief efforts currently underway in the Philippines, following the typhoon that recently devastated parts of that country. The Digital Screenmedia Association created a number of 15-second public service announcements that include instructions on how to easily donate to the relief effort. One of those 15-second spots runs twice during each 45-minute segment for three days, displayed on a High Definition 16:9 screen that measures 33 feet across. This is the largest screen at the event and is visible from nearly a quarter mile away. Zephyr Media is running the spots free of charge using BrightSign’s players, filling the urgent need to generate exposure and donations to provide typhoon survivors with water and other critical care items.

Austin Fan Fest took place in downtown Austin, TX November 14-17, 2013.

BrightSign Announces Significant Advances in Software and Firmware

BrightSign, LLC®, the market leader in digital signage media players, today announced new software and firmware for its BrightSign XD line of solid-state players, bringing significant enhancements including the ability to upscale 1080p video content to 4K, enhanced IP streaming, and some very useful HTML5 support features.

These improvements, found in the official release of BrightAuthor 3.7 software and its companion 4.7 firmware, are available to all existing and future users free of charge. These updates mark significant advances in the feature-set and functionality of the BrightSign XD players – advances that underscore the long-term value of investing in BrightSign equipment that will scale seamlessly as content tools and sources continue to evolve in the years ahead.
Using a pre-release version of the new software, BrightSign customers are already taking advantage of the powerful features.
4K display manufacturer Seiki Digital, Inc. recently demonstrated the impact of BrightSign XD’s powerful video engine paired with the new software features at the IFA trade show in Berlin.
Sung Choi, vice president of marketing for Seiki Digital brand, explained, “BrightSign’s new 4K upscaling feature enabled us to use settings in BrightAuthor to get the best possible resolution 1080p content playing on our new 4K UHD screens. We demonstrated the same 1080p content on a Full HD display side-by-side with one of our new 4K displays. This high-impact demonstration clearly showcased the superior picture quality delivered by BrightSign to our 4K screens.”
Integration partner, National Technology Associates, is using the enhanced IP streaming features to deliver video over IP to hundreds of displays in Station Casinos locations in Nevada.
And in-store signage at Batteries Plus locations very effectively use BrightSign’s hardware-accelerated HTML5 engine paired with built-in web server to pull database content from BrightSign Network, taking full advantage of the exceptional new features.
Specific BrightAuthor 3.7 software features are detailed below:

4K Upscaling
• BrightSign XD’s exceptionally powerful video engine paired with the new software features enable customers to use settings in BrightAuthor to get the best possible resolution 1080p content playing at 4K resolution on the stunning new 4K / UHD screens. This means display manufacturers can demonstrate the same 1080p content on a Full HD display and a 4K display side-by-side to clearly showcase the superior picture quality of the new 4K screens.
Enhanced IP Streaming
• BrightSign XD now supports Full HD video streaming including HLS, SHOUTcast, video streaming in HTML, as well as playback from head-end real-time encoders such as Haivision, Exterity, Visionary Solutions, and other devices that provide UDP/RTP/RTSP streaming. Full HD video streams and audio streams are buffered appropriately and play smoothly.
• In addition, the XD players can now act as IP streaming servers for customers who want to stream locally stored content files.
Unequaled HTML5 Support
• Hardware-accelerated HTML5 engine
BrightSign is well known for the superior performance of its hardware-accelerated image decoding and video decoding. This new software update now unleashes the power of hardware-accelerated HTML5 rendering. This means that users can accomplish much more using HTML, without encountering the stuttering effect that is often seen on Android devices and PC’s that rely on software-based HTML rendering.
• Modular HTML5 Assets
BrightSign XD allows for HTML assets to exist on the BrightSign canvas as independent packages, as opposed to one flat HTML page. This means that HTML5 can be seamlessly integrated with other content, so that the web’s collection of transparent HTML widgets, like clocks, weather feeds, tickers, etc., can be used easily without the need integrate them into a complete HTML page.
• JavaScript Extensions Enable Interactive Options
BrightSign is introducing JavaScript extensions that allow the full power of the BrightSign engine to be used via HTML and JavaScript. These JavaScript extensions allow access to serial IO, UDP events, GPIO, CEC, TV tuning, and other features. Now, any web developer can access BrightSign’s advanced digital signage engine.
• Built-in Web Server Pulls Database Content
The software update allows users to identify user variables in other databases and pull them into HTML. Using features and settings within BrightSign’s web server and on-device database of BrightAuthor user variables, users can display database data in HTML5 within a presentation. For example, the model number of a TV display entered as a user variable can pull all the information about that display into the signage presentation.

• HTML5 Video Rotation
BrightSign’s HTML5 support offers the exclusive ability to rotate any video including locally stored video, HDMI input video and even RF Input video (QAM/ATSC tuner). Our JavaScript can call any of these video assets, rotate them at any angle and play it back flawlessly. The result is a greatly simplified implementation process that yields a remarkable display that combines BrightSign’s powerful video engine and HTML5 capabilities in a way that no other can duplicate.
• Sign Control via Web Browser or Android Devices
Earlier this year, BrightSign announced the free BrightSign iOS App for updating content on locally networked signage. With this new software release, customers who want to control their signage from an Android mobile device or any web browser can do so.
The new BrightAuthor 3.7 software and 4.7 firmware package is free to all BrightSign customers and can be downloaded from the software downloads page on http://support.brightsign.biz/home. More information including tech notes and user guides can be found at http://support.brightsign.biz/entries/314526-brightsign-user-guides-troubleshooting.

BrightSign Powers Digital Signage at the Zurich Film Festival

BrightSign, LLC®, the market leader in digital signage players, today announced the successful completion of its work with Imaculix at the Zurich Film Festival. The project – a collaboration between BrightSign, Imaculix and the festival’s organizers – included more than 70 screens deployed in four major event venues located throughout Zurich.

Each fall, the film industry comes together at the Zurich Film Festival, an annual gathering that attracts film luminaries from across the globe. Now in its ninth year, the 2013 festival delivered an impressive line-up of events, award ceremonies and receptions to honor the achievements of directors, producers, actors and others within the film industry.

“An integral part of the event, our digital signage installations are unique in that they have the ability to both inform as well as entertain. For the second year, we turned to Imaculix to help harness these functions to the best of their ability, and we were very impressed with the result,” said Karl Spörri, artistic director of the Zurich Film Festival.

Digital signage conceived by Imaculix and powered by BrightSign was utilized extensively across the expansive network of event venues and transportation depots. More than ever before, innovative digital signage installations were used to direct festival attendees to their destinations, inform them about upcoming festival activities and simply entertain them with a dazzling array of eye-catching displays.

The Zurich Film Festival began on September 26th and concluded on the 6th of October. For full details, images and additional information about this installation, please contact BrightSign for its recently published case study detailing the technical implementations at the event.

BrightSign Announces Collaboration with CNBC

BrightSign, LLC®, the market leader in digital signage players, today announced that it was selected by CNBC to complete an integral component of its recent studio overhaul. The global leader in business news recently undertook a project to increase the flexibility of content delivery to screens immediately behind the news desk, and BrightSign figured prominently in the solution that was installed in late 2013.

“We’ve been looking at ways to streamline how we select and display content on the screens that serve as a backdrop to our on-air anchors and reporters,” said Lou Visconti, production technology specialist, CNBC. “Once I saw BrightSign’s app in action, I was excited to harness the app’s functionality to help us better manage and display background content.”

The monitors located behind the anchor desks at CNBC were underutilized, typically relegated to looping background content that wasn’t nearly as timely as the network’s real-time news programming. BrightSign developed a custom web page for CNBC to fully utilize these background monitors by offering greater control of the content being fed to the monitors, and giving staff the ability to switch content sources in real time to better reflect breaking news as it develops.

“We’re proud of our association with CNBC, and we are pleased that our products played such a vital role in the network’s latest studio renovation,” said Jeff Hastings, BrightSign’s CEO. “CNBC required technology that could scale and adapt to their specific use case, with reliable hardware to withstand the rigors of the studio environment – we delivered on both accounts and we couldn’t be more pleased with the end result.”

For full details, images and additional information about this installation, please contact BrightSign for its recently published case study detailing its collaboration with CNBC.

LOS GATOS, CA – (September 17, 2013) – BrightSign today announced that international luxury brand Dior is using BrightSign players to drive video walls in 13 stores and concessions in Europe and Asia. The installation was conceived and is managed by Digitalli, a media content agency.

Dior stores and concessions in France, UK, Italy, Spain, Russia, China and Japan feature two or more video walls with 2-5 synchronized screens driven by BrightSign players. Dior commissioned Digitalli to provide synchronized video content to run on all of the screens worldwide. Bertrand Degien, Technical Director, recommended BrightSign players for the new Points of Sale (POS) they installed. BrightSign solid-state players are the playback platform of choice for Digitalli at new stores around the world based on their stellar image quality and total reliability.

The Dior installation is challenging in two ways. Installations in Dior stores and concessions worldwide are carried out by local AV integrators and as a result the format of the screens isn’t completely standard. Secondly, the Internet connection in some stores cannot be used to upload content due to security restrictions.

“I love the BrightSign solid-state players,” said Bertrand Degien. “They are robust, and easy to use and provide great quality Full HD playback. We provide over 30 different videos per month to be played in-synch on the BrightSign players on two different walls in each store worldwide. Though with some stores we are able to access the players directly through the BrightSign Network, for most we have to send SD cards with the content which are handled by the store staff. Due to the simplicity of the BrightSign players, this has caused no issue even though we are working with staff around the world speaking multiple different languages. In addition, BrightAuthor software makes it very easy to synchronise the content across all of the screens in each store. The software also allows us to edit the movie to work with the specific screens in each store.”

Pierre Gillet – Vice President, European Sales for BrightSign added, “The use of BrightSign players by a premium brand like Dior in 13 stores around the world demonstrates that our players stand comparison with much more costly solutions in terms of playback quality. The Dior installation is exceptionally demanding as the screens are located all over the world, so the total reliability of BrightSign players was a further key factor in Digitalli’s choice for these counters.”

Emirates Team New Zealand Joins Forces with BrightSign at the America’s Cup

BrightSign, LLC®, the market leader in digital signage players, today announced that Toulouse Group, Audio Visual Integration Specialists for the New Zealand Government at the Emirates Team New Zealand base, selected BrightSign to power the digital signage network in the team’s America’s Cup hospitality center in San Francisco, California. Emirates Team New Zealand is a two-time winner of the event and is expected to be among the front-runners for this year’s title. This America’s Cup installation is the latest in a long line of collaborative efforts between Toulouse Group and BrightSign. In the past few years alone, Toulouse Group utilized BrightSign’s digital signage players in many venues, including the International Award-winning New Zealand Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo, the outstanding 7,000 square-foot museum at Rotorua Museum New Zealand, and recent new exhibition installs at Carter Observatory New Zealand with its state-of-the-art, full-dome digital theater – a world-class interactive multimedia space experience.

“The America’s Cup is about much more than competition on the water – it’s a months-long gathering of the international sailing community and our presence in the America’s Cup Village will be the team’s home away from home through September,” said Marc Simpson, founder and principal of Toulouse Group. “This hospitality lounge is the “off-the-water” representation of the team and of our country, so it was important to construct a lounge that showcases the very latest technology, and BrightSign enabled us to do precisely that.”

While the installation was completed by AV integrator Toulouse Group, the hospitality lounge itself will be staffed by individuals who lack any formal AV training. This necessitated the installation of equipment that is easy to use and very reliable. BrightSign’s solid-state players served that need perfectly.

Emirates Team New Zealand’s hospitality lounge encompasses a total of 9,600 square feet, comprised of a main gathering area, several ancillary rooms and an expansive outdoor deck. An extensive Ethernet network is deployed throughout the lounge, connecting a total of 23 BrightSign HD120 and HD1020 digital signage players that feed and sync content across a massive video wall comprised of 19 Full HD 1080p displays. Sound is deployed with two BrightSign players and an EM100 expansion module. Six channels of audio fill the space with sound effects and ambient audio all in sync with the video wall. The remaining four BrightSign players feed projectors that project content on a series of white, sail-shaped screens that meld beautifully with the nautical theme of the event.

“Hosting the America’s Cup in the San Francisco Bay Area, it’s expected that the event will showcase the best technology that’s emerging from the Silicon Valley,” said Jeff Hastings, BrightSign’s CEO. “We’re very pleased that Emirates Team New Zealand and its AV integrator Toulouse Group chose BrightSign, and we’re happy to play a part in this impressive installation.”

The America’s Cup officially opens on July 4, 2013. The competition lasts nearly three months and includes a number of racing events such as the Louis Vuitton Cup and the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup. The event culminates with the America’s Cup Finals, which run from September 7-21, 2013.
