ReaLED technology from projectiondesign powers ‘Earthquake’ exhibit at California Academy of Sciences

FL32 projectors chosen for accuracy, sustainability, and low cost of ownership

Norway’s projectiondesign is delighted to announce that it has supplied its FL32 DLP® projectors to the California Academy of Sciences for use in its ‘Earthquake’ exhibit.

The projectors, which use the manufacturer’s ReaLED™ solid-state light-source technology, are used to drive the display aspects of a 20ft-wide immersive dome, which shows a three-minute film linking the concepts of geological time (plate movements over millions of years) and human time (earthquake activity, specifically in the San Francisco Bay Area).

The outputs of the projectors are seamlessly edge-blended onto a domed projection surface, with content being derived from 7thSense Delta media servers, and image processing and alignment from Scalable Display Technologies. Visual Acuity acted as an independent technology consultant for the project, effectively reprising the role the company performed in the original design of the Academy’s planetarium. Systems integration was performed by local AV systems company BBI Engineering.

This latest project for the Academy comes after projectiondesign supplied several projectors to the institution for its Morrison Planetarium, Water Planet exhibit, Hohfeld Hall pre-show area and scientific Visualization Studio in 2008.

The ReaLED technology that powers our FL32 promises 100,000 hours of service life with no deterioration in output over time, which in addition to helping preserve our planet, also gives the customer a very low and completely predictable cost of ownership.”

Since the original project projectiondesign have made massive strides in furthering energy efficient display technology with the launch of their ReaLED product range hence it was an easy decision to select the FL32 projectors for this demanding application.”

‘Earthquake’, which contains a number of other attractions in addition to the mini-dome, occupies the entire west hall of the Academy and opened to the public for the first time on May 26, 2012. It is expected to be part of the Academy’s visitor offerings for several years.

Electrosonic Goes Back To Nature for Mohonk Preserve Visitor Center

Mohonk Preserve in the Shawangunk Mountains near New Paltz, New York, is marking its 50th anniversary this year with a renovation of its green design award-winning Visitor Center tucked cozily into the woods. Electrosonic was charged with creating several new exhibits for the main floor, which enable visitors to maximize their time in New York’s largest nonprofit nature preserve.

Electrosonic installed and programmed the 10-minute orientation film produced by Richard Lewis Media Group, and displayed it in a visitor orientation theater with bench seating. The theater boasts a 26-foot wide curved screen fed by four projectiondesign F12 projectors blended and warped via Dataton WATCHOUT™ multi-image display and presentation software.

“The theater was our biggest challenge,” noted Electrosonic project manager Jackson Benedict. “It’s a very small space with a low ceiling. We had to use fixed-lens projectors, which meant there was very little tolerance in installing them. We had to build a custom ceiling mount that allowed for projector adjustment in the field, as necessary. Projector airflow in the small space also had to be managed effectively.

“The very sharp curve of the screen provided a challenge for warping the blend in WATCHOUT,” Benedict said. “It was quite complicated. Shifting the projector one inch in the wrong direction would change everything.”

A small control room behind the screen houses equipment in a single rack. The content for all of the interactives can be updated remotely to keep content fresh and up to date. “Electrosonic worked with the exhibit fabricators to make sure we had relatively easy access to all equipment for service,” said Benedict.

With over 8,000 acres of mountain ridges, fields, streams, ponds and other unique and beautiful places, Mohonk Preserve is dedicated to protecting the Shawangunk Mountains by inspiring people to care for, enjoy and explore the natural world. Visitors can bike, hike, climb, ride horses, run, ski and snowshoe in the Preserve. Lee H. Skolnick Architecture + Design Partnership was responsible for the architecture, interiors, graphic design and exhibit design of the Visitor Center project.

WorldStage uses WATCHOUT with new Broadway Musical “Bare” iPhone app

Entertainment technology providers, WorldStage has provided a customized iPhone software app for the new Broadway Musical, “BARE”. WorldStage also provided three videomapped Christie WX10K 10K projectors and integrated Dataton WATCHOUT™ multi-image display and presentation software package featuring display computer, production computers and a Dynamic Image Server that supports live video streaming. WATCHOUT and the servers to run it were supplied to WorldStage by Show Sage, Dataton Premium Partner for North America.

“We selected WATCHOUT because it could be deployed for the visual projections as well as integrated with an iPhone app,” says WorldStage account executive, Lars Pedersen.

In explaining how the app works, projection designer, William Cusick says: “One character is asked by another to take his picture with his iPhone. So he aims the phone and slowly the live camera feed from the phone comes up on the concrete wall behind them. Then the character snaps the picture, and we see the frozen video image. That same picture is shown two more times in the show: as a saved screen capture and in a memorial scene after the character dies. So there’s a through-line with the image.”

“Bare” is a contemporary rock musical playing at New World Stages in the heart of the Manhattan theater district, New York City and will make its debut in Switzerland in 2013. It is an emotionally charged tale of a group of teens coming to grips with issues of identity, sexuality and religion at a co-ed Catholic boarding school. It was first staged in Los Angeles over a decade ago and has had over 100 productions worldwide.

BARTKRESA Design deploys WATCHOUT for projection mapping at Universal Studios Japan®

Ethereal angels and operatic singing supported with projection mapping, lighting, special effects to wow audiences, transporting them to a winter wonderland!

The system uses none other than Dataton WATCHOUT™ multi-image display and presentation software to manage images in a complex and stunning production that combines performances from a 60-strong cast of actors and opera singers with lighting and special effects, on a building façade and stage measuring 250 ft wide and 70 ft tall.

“Christmas time is a family time, we’ve been brought in to create stunning visuals that immerse and transport viewers on a Christmas journey,” explains Bart Kresa, Projection Designer at BARTKRESA Design. “In the design process, we created the sketches, paintings, 3d designs and animations managed using WATCHOUT. We produced the whole thing working with the Universal Studios Japan Show Director on creative elements and the Universal Studios Japan Producer on technical requirements.”

Twelve playback and four production WATCHOUT servers managed the content which was displayed with 31projectors including the Christie Roadster S+20K and Christie Roadster HD18K1080 HD DLP® models supplied by Corporate Image Associates, Inc, Images areprojected onto a stage and the main building façade, creating a magnificentbackdrop for the show.

“WATCHOUT works in sync with the show using a time code that syncs lighting, sound, projection and smokemachines. We use masking, perspective control and have done some layering ofanimations such as snow over background animations.”

Modern museum techniques: projectiondesign® helps visitors better comprehend the stories of First World War

The newly opened In Flanders Fields Museum in Ypres, Belgium interprets the stories of the First World War as seen in the Flanders region using modern museum techniques and multimedia for visitors of today and tomorrow. projectiondesign® F22, F32 and F35 wqxga projectors and WB processors were provided by specialist museums system integrator, Ocular BVBA for use in the Belle Epoque, First Battle, Ypres Salient and Third Battle exhibit areas with the aim of stimulating a more in-depth look at how museum visitors deal with war and peace.

On entering the museum, a Poppy Bracelet is given to all visitors. As visitors move around the beautifully restored medieval cloth-hall building in the city’s main square, a micro-chip inside their ‘Poppy’, a globally recognised symbol of the First World War, provides them with video projections, interactive touchscreens and soundscapes used to re-create the pain and tragedy of the War.

The museum has always focused on the stories of individuals within the larger picture of the Great War. These personal stories are told through many and varied objects on display, interactive installations and life-like characters.

Piet Chielens, Coordinator In Flanders Fields Museum, explains: “To really embrace the whole public with the impact of landscape then I think the best way of doing it is with projection. That is what we’ve done here. People are really thrilled with the experience and that is largely due to the techniques we’ve chosen to present it.”

Nicolas Vanden Avenne, Managing Director at Ocular BVBA explains: “Every projection surface in this museum is either curved or has a rather unusual shape for projection, which made this a technical challenge. Along with projection, we use the blend and warp functionality of the WB processors throughout the museum.”

As visitors enter the museum, they walk through the Belle Epoque exhibit, which highlights the period of time leading up until the war. In this area two F32 projectors are used to project footage on to a curved structure that looks like a forest of wood panels.

In the First Battle exhibit, an F35 wqxga projector is used to project from the ceiling onto a 3D scale model map of the battlefields from the North Sea to the front line. Viewers can watch the deployment of allied troops in the city of Ypres and the first battle from an eagle’s point of view.

Ypres Saliant uses three projectiondesign F22 projectors and WB1920 processors onto a 170-degree curved screen to observe the progress of the war as if travelling in a balloon high in the sky. Footage includes a view over buildings and deployment of troops around Ypres. The content is a combination of historical footage and custom made film.
Perhaps the most harrowing exhibit the Third battle, uses four F22 projectors onto a curved screen and ceiling to provide symbolic visuals with narration by nurses, doctors, soldiers, priests about one of the bloodiest battles in the First World War.

“To achieve the exhibit areas, Vanden Avenne says, we had to look for a partner that could do the engineering of our projections and cooperate with us during the building of the museum. We turned to projectiondesign because of their high-performance projectors for each exhibit area and choice of lenses.”

“As the museum is open ten hours a day, we wanted to have reliability, longevity with no image degradation. projectiondesign guaranteed that their projectors would remain consistent during heavy use,” adds Vanden Avenne.

Kraftwerk relies on WATCHOUT for Stereoscopic 3D and Live interactivity

German electro pop pioneers, Kraftwerk will use the dynamic interactive and 3D features of Dataton WATCHOUT™ multi-image and presentation software, for all on-stage digital scenography at their hotly anticipated tours and concerts’ programme throughout 2013.

Formed in 1970, Kraftwerk began using Stereoscopic 3D for the MoMA concerts and ”Way out West” Swedish Rock Festival in Spring 2012.

WATCHOUT manages projected 3D content on a large stage backdrop creating a powerful abstract presence in front of audiences wearing polarized 3D glasses. Two more WATCHOUT channels feed the flanking LED screens. To create the lighting effects on the four oversized illuminated keyboards, a Pixel-gate LED video controller uses an additional DVI output from the main screen using the WATCHOUT “Tier” feature. The main timeline in WATCHOUT is chasing timecode from Kraftwerk synthesizers (MTC converted into SMPTE). The Kraftwerk synthesizers are also used for live visual interaction controlled via MIDI commands.

The new features of WATCHOUT version 5 enable live manipulation of content. Media objects can be positioned, rotated and moved in 3D in real-time from external control systems, musical instruments, lighting consoles, mobile devices and sensors to control on-screen elements such as images, video, Stereoscopic 3D movies and live feeds as required.

Kraftwerk at upcoming Dusseldorf and London concerts

Several upcoming Kraftwerk concerts will incorporate Stereoscopic 3D effects as well as 3D sound.

Kraftwerk’s first performance in Düsseldorf, Germany since 1991, performances called 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 are taking place at the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen Museum, first from January 11 – 13, then 16 – 20. Like the MoMA shows, Kraftwerk will play one album per date and will be accompanied by 3D visuals, which actually involve audiences. Running alongside the performance programme, a photo exhibition, Kraftwerk, runs from January 11 at the Forum Nordrhein-Westfalen Museum.

In London, Kraftwerk will perform at Tate Modern’s cavernous Turbine Hall for eight nights, first from February 6-9, then 11-14, and are their first live London performances since 2004. The band will perform one studio album in full on each night and combine it with visual backdrops, including interactive 3D projections and animation.

Dataton, the world-renowned manufacturer and developer of presentation and show-control products, ushers in a new era of innovation and creativity at the 2013 edition of Integrated Systems Europe. The company’s latest products, marketed as additions to the WATCHOUT suite of multi-display production and presentation software, will be showcased on Dataton’s biggest ISE stand so far.

While the exact nature of the products to be showcased at ISE remains a closely guarded secret until the show opens its doors on January 29, Fredrik Svahnberg, Dataton’s marketing director, comments: “We have continued to update WATCHOUT this year with new features such as 3D stereoscopic playback, live video streaming, interactivity, and multiple languages. What we are going to show at ISE marks the start of a major move forward.”

On the first day of ISE 2013, Dataton will host a booth party at 17:00 on stand 7-K175 to celebrate its 40th year in business and the Swedish-based company is promising plenty of Scandinavian hospitality.

Maintaining its support for education programmes in the pro-AV space, Dataton will also present an InfoComm University™ session in ISE’s Education Zone. Titled ‘Multi-Image Projection Techniques’, the session will be delivered by Svahnberg and will be held at 10:00am on Wednesday, 30 January. Like all InfoComm University content, thesession will be vendor-neutral and free of sales pitches.

Finally, ISE 2013 will be the first major AV tradeshow that Dataton has planned from its new corporate headquarters at Mjärdevi Science Park in Linköping, Sweden. Construction of the purpose-built HQ, designed by award-winning architect Petra Gipp, commenced in the summer of 2012.

Dataton will exhibit on Stand 7-K175 at Integrated Systems Europe at the Amsterdam RAI from 29-31 January 2013.
