Blackmagic Design Announces ATEM Switcher Update 6.1

Fremont, CA – October 2, 2014 - Blackmagic Design today announced the release of ATEM Switcher Update 6.1 software which includes new features for Camera Control such as copying of color settings across cameras, white balance display and synchronized fading of audio and video using Fade to Black. ATEM Switcher Update 6.1 is available now for download free of charge for all existing ATEM Switcher customers from the Blackmagic Design support page on the website.

Blackmagic Designs award winning ATEM range of live production switchers include full camera control when used with the new Blackmagic Studio Camera or Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K models. These cameras are fully controlled via the SDI or optical fiber output connection that links the output of the ATEM switcher to the camera. Normally this connection allows camera operators to see program video from the switcher, but with the ATEM open standard SDI protocol, full camera control, tally and talkback is also included all in the same link.

Customers have been extremely happy with this camera control feature, and have used the lens control and built in color correction to make live video production dramatically easier as well as more creative. However customers have also been feeding back to Blackmagic Design some great ideas for improvements to the camera control and these updates have been included in this ATEM Switcher Update 6.1.The new ATEM Switcher Update 6.1 software includes an exciting new copy and paste function which allows color correction settings to be copied across camera controllers, either individually or to all cameras without affecting iris, focus, coarse and pedestal settings. Now camera color correction settings can be quickly and easily copied for a consistent and unified color look which is critical in a fast paced live production environment.

An adjustable display of white balance temperature has also been added to Camera Control, giving greater control over the color temperature of the camera and making it easy to ensure they are all matched for consistent program output. This new feature is conveniently located for ease of use adjacent to the shutter and gain control. Customers can also now fade audio and video together using audio follow video (AFV) and selecting Fade to Black button, making it easy for a single user to switch from a program, to end a recording or move to a commercial break.

“The response to Camera Control in the ATEM switcher software panel has been amazing, people have really been able to take advantage of directly controlling camera color using the ATEM switcher software”, said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “Customers have given us some great suggestions so we have prioritised these and are continuously releasing updates with these exciting new features. Copy and paste for camera control set up as well as white balance temperature adjustment make it incredibly quick and easy for our customers to set up multiple cameras for live production and achieve amazing image consistency.”

Pickathon Music Festival Relies on Blackmagic Studio Camera and ATEM Production Studio 4K

Fremont, CA – September 22, 2014 – Blackmagic Design today announced that Pickathon Music Festival used five Blackmagic Studio Cameras and six ATEM Live Production Switchers, as well as a large number of additional Blackmagic Design products, as the backbone of its live production and live streaming workflows. Held outside of Portland, OR in early August, Pickathon brought together more than 50 musical acts across seven stages for a three day music festival on the Pendarvis Farm and in the surrounding woods.

Not only is Pickathon unique in terms of location, with one stage nestled in the woods and made entirely out of tree branches, but it also relied on a unique live production workflow. Pickathon’s producer and a production veteran, Ryan Stiles, coordinated a crew of 68 staff and 223 volunteers to handle live broadcasts to monitors around the festival grounds, as well as 44 hours of live streams to a global Internet audience via the festival’s and local station KEXP’s websites. Tens of thousands of people enjoyed the festival, whether at the event itself or watching live streams online.

Located near the main stage, a 57 foot broadcast truck housed an ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K and ATEM 1 M/E Broadcast Panel, which were the heart of the live production workflow. The switcher handled all the stages’ feeds along with three computers feeding it edited content.

“The ATEM switchers allow Pickathon to accomplish tasks that would otherwise be impossible. We needed stability and a universal system that’s the same no matter what stage the directors are at. The simplicity and ease of use of the software and control over the network is an all around win for us,” said Ryan. “The importance of using it cannot be stressed enough. One of Pickathon’s challenges is that we are not a crew during the year. We come from all different types of employment in the industry, and I need everyone to understand the equipment within a five minute period so they can focus on our aesthetic rather then fuss with technology. The ATEM switchers and Studio Cameras allow us to do just that.

“When putting together the production for this year, I knew we needed to use the Blackmagic Studio Cameras because of their functionality and mobility, perfect for live production,” he continued. “When shooting live, menus inside of menus are not an option, and the Studio Camera’s easy access to camera options is amazing. And the two color settings worked out great. We shot flat for post editing color grading and then switched over to video for richer tones when streaming live.”

Ryan added: “By the end of the first day, our senior camera operators had nothing but praise for the Studio Cameras. I would say that the Studio Camera is the future of multi camera live production.”

The staff were divided among the rest of the stages and used a mix of cameras, switchers and converters, including the Blackmagic Studio Cameras HD, ATEM Production Studio 4K, ATEM 1 M/E Production Switcher, three ATEM Television Studio switchers, six ATEM Camera Converters, three ATEM Studio Converters, HyperDeck Studio Pro and three HyperDeck Shuttle SSD recorders to record the footage, two H.264 Pro Recorders and 13 Mini Converters. 3,800 ft. of optical fiber cable connected the stages to the main broadcast truck. A Blackmagic Design Production Camera 4K was used to shoot private sessions around the farm with the musicians called “On the Farm.” These sessions were also streamed during the festival and will be released throughout 2015.

“This is Pickathon’s 16th year, and since day one the driving force behind it has been to create the best music festival possible for music lovers. And that’s across the board, from the lineups and stages to eliminating plastic and normal festival hassles, as well as putting decisions in the hands of the online community,” concluded Ryan. “I’ve been producing the festival for the last six years, and each year we try to make the production better for festival goers and online viewers. It’s why we rely on Blackmagic Design for much of our live production and streaming workflows.”

IBC 2014, Amsterdam, Netherlands – September 12, 2014 - Blackmagic Design today announced Videohub Software Update 6.0, a whole new software suite for the company’s popular Videohub range of SDI routers that provides new client control and setup applications for easier and simpler router operation. Blackmagic Videohub 6.0 is available now for download free of charge.

Videohub Update 6.0 software will be demonstrated on the Blackmagic Design IBC 2014 booth in Hall 7, Stand H20.

The new Blackmagic Videohub 6.0 update includes 2 new software applications for both Mac OS X and Windows computers. The Blackmagic Videohub Control features a new user interface that includes elegantly designed buttons that allow users to customize and control their Videohub routing from their desktop. Blackmagic Videohub Control is perfect when customers are working on editing, color correction or other computer based workstations and want to change routing in their facility.

Blackmagic Videohub is simple and easy to use and supports the latest technologies such as high resolution “Retina” displays that use paper resolution screen displays. Blackmagic Videohub Control can be installed on multiple computers in a post production facility or broadcaster so all users can quickly launch the software and change route cross points with the press of a button.

For configuring and installing Blackmagic Videohub routers, the administration software, Blackmagic Videohub Setup, has been designed to make it extremely fast to install and label router inputs and outputs and to change other settings on Videohub routers. It automatically finds all Videohub routers on the users network, or any routers connected locally via USB and then lets the administrator or broadcast engineer simply select the router and change its settings.

Blackmagic Videohub Setup also allows customers to save and load router configurations so they can backup the router in case they need to quickly load the router settings in the future, or even change router configurations between jobs, common on smaller routers in live production environments.

About Blackmagic Videohub Routers

The Blackmagic Smart Videohub family of professional SDI video routers are the world’s first Ultra HD mixed format routers to include built in LCD video monitoring and spin knob router control. The Smart Videohub routers include 6G-SDI technology so customers can simultaneously connect and route any combination of SD, HD and Ultra HD video all on the same router at the same time. Even if a customer has multiple different television formats connected to the router inputs, Smart Videohub routers will route any of them to any combination of the outputs, all simultaneously.

Smart Videohub routers includes an elegant machined metal front panel and the revolutionary Visual Routing combines the spin knob and button entry with easy to read custom router labels over live video from the inputs onto the LCD. When any input or output is selected, the video is displayed live on the LCD. This allows customers to see their router connections as video on the LCD as they scroll the knob to select routing.

“This new software allows all Blackmagic Videohub customers to get a totally new router experience because we have completely replaced the old software with a fresh new design that looks state of the art and is just so nice to use,” said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “Our original router software was developed back when we had small routers and really did not make setup of our larger 288 routers easy. With this new router software, we get the ability to handle large routers, but the software is just so much nicer to use with an elegant UI and much better features. We think Videohub customers will be very happy with this update as the improvement in the software is dramatic.”

Blackmagic Design announces new SmartView 4K

IBC 2014, Amsterdam, Netherlands – September 12, 2014 - Blackmagic Design today announced SmartView 4K, the world’s first full resolution Ultra HD broadcast monitor with 12G-SDI inputs for compatibility with virtually all SD, HD and Ultra HD formats up to 2160p60 for only US$1,995.

SmartView 4K will be demonstrated on the Blackmagic Design IBC 2014 booth in Hall 7, Stand H20.

SmartView 4K is a professional Ultra HD broadcast monitor with a native resolution of 3840 x 2160, an amazingly bright LCD screen with a wide viewing angle and advanced broadcast features such as 3D LUTs, adjustable on screen markers, H/V delay, blue only and more. SmartView 4K features multi rate 12G-SDI inputs that automatically switch between SD, HD and Ultra HD formats up to 2160p60. With 12G-SDI, SmartView 4K is an incredibly future proof design with unprecedented full resolution Ultra HD high frame rate support all built into the attractive thin rack mount design.

When monitoring SD, 720 HD or 1080 HD SDI sources, the built in Teranex processor uses advanced patented and proprietary PixelMotion™ algorithms to automatically de-interlace and scale video to the native Ultra HD resolution of the LCD. This means customers get visually transparent, artifact free scaling for the best quality possible and a fluid smooth viewing experience.

The 6 rack unit size machined metal design of SmartView 4K features a built in control panel for access to advanced broadcast features such as built in 3D LUTs, H/V delay, blue only for checking hue and image noise and customizable frame markers. The machined metal design also has a metal internal chassis allowing VESA mounting points on the rear so the monitor can be rack mounted, or mounted on articulated arms similar to computer monitors. This allows installation in news rooms, walls and other non rack mount locations.

With the advent of SDI video in the mid 1990’s some features on analog broadcast monitors were lost. One of these feature was the H/V delay that allowed broadcast engineers to view data and signals in the horizontal and vertical blanking. With SmartView 4K, customers get these features retuned and with the H/V delay feature, customers can shift the image to monitor data and information in the SDI blanking, such as embedded audio data, subtitles, VITC and more.

Blackmagic SmartView 4K includes both universal AC power as well as 12V DC power inputs so it can be used with a battery or plugged into standard AC mains power, making it the perfect professional monitor for any broadcast facility, mobile broadcast truck, or even on location and in fly away kits. There is also a SMPTE compatible optical fiber SDI socket for allowing customers to optionally add an optical fiber SDI module if they want to run optical fiber direct to their monitor without converters. Optional optical fiber is important with the high speeds of 12G-SDI where customers might feel more comfortable about the reliability of optical fiber.

Blackmagic SmartView 4K can be controlled from the front panel or remotely via rear mounted Ethernet connection with loop output using the included Mac and Windows software. It also supports VESA mounting so customers can install it on articulated monitor arms, on walls or in equipment racks. When used on set, the dual 3D LUTs can be selected on and off with the push of a button, and the DC power input allows a V-Lock battery pack to be mounted on the rear of the monitor and plugged into the DC input for long running time where no AC power is available.

“SmartView 4K is the most versatile, highest resolution professional monitor we’ve ever created,” said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “Its future proof 12G-SDI based design helps customers get ready for Ultra HD workflows while maintaining compatibility with and delivering exceptional quality for current SD and HD sources. Plus, it’s flexible enough to be used on set or in a the largest broadcast studio. It’s all very exciting!”

SmartView 4K Key Features

  • Large, bright 15.6 inch native Ultra HD resolution LCD rack mount monitor.
  • Multi rate dual 12G-SDI connections, auto switching SD, HD and up to 2160p60 Ultra HD formats.
  • Built in Teranex processor automatically de-interlaces and scales SD and HD video up to Ultra HD resolution for improved quality on lower resolution video inputs.

Blackmagic Design announces new Blackmagic MultiView 16

IBC 2014, Amsterdam, Netherlands – September 12, 2014 -Blackmagic Design today announced Blackmagic MultiView 16, the world’s first native Ultra HD multi viewer that allows customers to use the new large screen Ultra HD televisions and Ultra HD monitors for displaying images at twice the resolution of an HD multi view. With full frame re-sync in each input Blackmagic MultiView 16 supports the display of up to 16 mixed SD, HD and Ultra HD video sources all at the same time. MultiView 16 will be priced at only US$1,495.

Blackmagic MultiView 16 will be demonstrated on the Blackmagic Design IBC 2014 booth in Hall 7, Stand H20.

Blackmagic MultiView 16 outputs both 1080p HD and native Ultra HD over SDI and HDMI monitors, making it possible to use professional broadcast monitors or the new massive Ultra HD consumer televisions for incredibly sharp, high resolution multi view monitoring that is twice the resolution of traditional HD multi viewers. Customers can choose layouts from 2×2 for 4 sources, 3×3 for 9 sources and 4×4 for 16 sources.

Blackmagic MultiView 16 includes sixteen multi rate 6G-SDI inputs with separate loop thru that are compatible with existing SD, HD and Ultra HD equipment. Customers no longer have to connect multiple monitors, dozens of cables or run extra power. Simply plug in cameras, decks, switchers, routers and feeds into the SDI connections on Blackmagic MultiView 16 and they can see everything with amazing clarity and detail on a single Ultra HD display.

Because it works natively in Ultra HD, customers get four times the number of pixels in each view so the video looks sharper and clearer than ever before. Blackmagic MultiView 16 delivers an incredible 4 full resolution 1920 x 1080 HD video sources when running in 2×2 layout, or 16 half resolution 1080 HD videos sources at an amazing 960 x 540 resolution when running in 4×4 layout!

Blackmagic MultiView 16 is easy to use and includes an elegant machined metal front panel with dedicated buttons for quickly selecting any source. Video can be routed to any position on the grid at the push of a button or with the spin knob control, so it works just like a video router. MultiView 16 can also be controlled remotely over a network using the included Mac and Windows software, as well as from Videohub hardware control panels installed throughout a facility. There is also an SDK for custom broadcast integrations.

“Using MultiView 16 is like having 16 independent broadcast monitors on a single display,” said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “Facilities that don’t even care about working in Ultra HD can still get a huge benefit as when using an Ultra HD monitor connected to it, they get twice the resolution of regular 1080 HD inputs for twice the image clarity. That’s really critical when monitoring camera feeds where you want to check focus. Being able to view up to 16 mixed format sources on a single screen all at the same time, in such amazing quality and with incredible detail is mind blowing!”

France’s Biggest Summer Festival Produced Live with Blackmagic Design

Blackmagic Design today announced that a full ATEM live production workflow was used during the French music festival Vieilles Charrues to support on stage performances from internationally renowned artists such as the Arctic Monkeys, Lily Allen, Elton John and The Black Keys.

Live production specialist Sombrero & Co, who managed all aspect of video production across the festival’s two main stages, used a centralized production hub featuring multiple ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4Ks and a Compact Videohub router for signal distribution.

Camera feeds from both stages are taken via optical fiber to ATEM Studio Converters, where they are converted to SDI and fed into the production switchers, via the 40×40 router. The ATEM Studio Converter also provides full talkback and tally, so the director and vision mixer can talk directly to the camera operators on both stages and collaborate to manage the live production of content.

“Video production at major festivals such as Vieilles Charrues is a difficult balance, because as well as capturing all of the individual bands’ performances, the festivals themselves have their own style and spirit, so you have to be able to produce content that is in keeping with that, as well as ensuring the hundreds of thousands in the crowd all have a fantastic experience,” explains Julien Brunet, Sombrero & Co.

The live program mix of performances and wide angle crowd shots, as well as commercials and sponsor messages during performance breaks, is then fed back to the router and is screened on two large scale LED screens at the side of each stage.

“When devising the workflow for the control room, we decided on a dual switcher workflow because it gave us more flexibility,” explains Brunet. “Many of the larger international acts will come with their own creative directors, who want to check the footage matches their wider vision for the artists. The additional inputs and Multi View monitoring features offered by the ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K gives us the flexibility to do that, as well as providing video content for the big screens to keep the crowd entertained.”

“We know that we can trust equipment from Blackmagic Design to not only withstand the rigors and demands of an outdoor festival environment, but also to provide us with the professional broadcast quality features that make it possible for us to produce compelling content that enhance the spirit of a festival,” concludes Brunet. “The production hub was designed to be collaborative so that our camera operators, the festival director, live artists and technicians can all understand what we are trying to achieve on every single performance, and the Blackmagic Design workflow enables us to achieve that perfectly.”

Blackmagic Design announces ATEM Camera Control Now Available

Fremont, CA – July 31, 2014 – Blackmagic Design today announced the immediate availability of ATEM Switchers Update 6.0 which adds support for controlling cameras from ATEM production switchers via the program feed to the camera. ATEM Switchers Update 6.0 is available now free of charge from the Blackmagic Design website.

Until now the ability to control cameras from the live production switcher was only available to extremely high end broadcasters who had the costly infrastructure that allowed this feature. With the new ATEM Camera Control software update, ATEM live production switchers can now control cameras via a new open standard protocol sent to the camera via the return program feed.

ATEM Camera Control is compatible with the new Blackmagic Studio Camera when running software update v1.8.2 or later. The Blackmagic Studio Camera HD and Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K models feature both optical fiber and regular SDI program return feeds to the camera and the commands from the switcher are broadcast to all cameras via this program return feed.

The Blackmagic Studio Camera can be controlled via a regular CCU style of control, however to allow even greater creativity, the Blackmagic Studio Camera has a fully featured DaVinci Resolve primary color corrector built in featuring the same YRGB style grading that is found on DaVinci Resolve.

This means the switcher operator has incredible control over the cameras and not only can settings like focus and iris be remotely set with extreme accuracy, but the operator has full lift, gamma and gain controls in full YRGB colorspace just like a full color corrector. Now any colorist that is familiar with DaVinci Resolve color grading can use their creative skills on live production work.

This new ATEM Camera Control with color correction will allow customers to not only get perfect matching between cameras on live production, but operators can also take into account changing light conditions, which is common on outdoor events. Then when customers need to generate creative looks, such as for music videos, they can push the correction further for exciting looks all in real time.

The stylish control panel in the ATEM Software Control allows normal operation of the ATEM live production switcher, but then at any time the user can select the camera tab and then see the controls for each camera. They get a familiar CCU style of interface with easy control of black and iris settings on the camera as well as focus. When controlling a camera, this camera is automatically output using one of the switchers aux. outputs so the operator can use this aux. output to local monitoring.

When more refined and creative looks are desired, the user can then push a button and the CCU style interface will expand out to a fully featured primary color corrector interface, that allows color grading using an interface very familiar to any DaVinci Resolve colorist. Every setting creatively is the same as DaVinci Resolve as the processing is the same. With the color corrector built into the camera, customers get much greater creative control because the color corrector gets full bit depth and colorspace direct from the camera’s sensor.

“Since we first demonstrated the ATEM camera control, the response has been amazing, and broadcasters have quickly recognized the advantage of the Blackmagic Studio Camera’s design and interoperability with ATEM switchers as well as the incredible color corrector built right inside the camera itself!” said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “Now they can have full control without running any extra cables using the new SDI based protocol. All that is required is a single thin SDI optical fiber or SDI cable. This is not just a simple CCU style of color adjustment but a full featured DaVinci primary color corrector built right into the camera itself. The benefit to the customer is that exciting creative looks can be achieved in live production, that previously were only possible in post production. I’m very excited to release this software and cannot wait to see what people do with it creatively!”

Blackmagic Studio Cameras HD and ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K Installed at NOW Church

InfoComm 2014, Las Vegas NV – June 18, 2014 – Blackmagic Design today announced that Ocala, Florida based NOW Church has installed and begun capturing services with two new Blackmagic Studio Cameras HD. NOW Church has also completed a full AV installation that includes two Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Cameras, a Blackmagic Cinema Camera (EF) and an ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K.

NOW Church is a large and growing Christian church that includes an active local congregation, as well as members throughout the world. To help spread its message and keep its community informed, NOW Church provides weekly sermons and regular events, as well as streamed Bible lessons and weekly broadcasts of sermons on the Internet and via local Florida broadcasters. To capture NOW Church’s high-energy worship, and rock concert-like presentation, they built an extensive live AV and broadcast infrastructure, with help from Florida based design and consulting firm Proton Global, based around Blackmagic Design products.

The Blackmagic cameras are used around the church for wide shots, stage zooms and tight body shots of the pastor, singers, plays and other church events, and include a moving Pocket Cinema Camera set up on a 40 foot track running over the heads of the crowd to the stage/pulpit. All cameras are fed into the ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K via HD-SDI cables, and two via wireless transmitters, with the ATEM located 120 feet away from the main stage.

The Blackmagic Studio Cameras, installed in May, operate as the two main cameras for the church, with Camera 1 using a Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 lens, shooting tight to full body from rear center of the church, and Camera 2 capturing full shots of the pulpit from the left using a Panasonic Lumix G 12-35mm f/2.8 lens.

“We saw the Studio Cameras at NAB and recognized right away that these would be perfect for NOW. Within a few weeks we had ordered the cameras and had them installed and working,” said Ricky Perinchief, owner of Proton Global.

“The images coming from the cameras are amazing, and the 10 inch monitor and focus control have been incredible. As with most churches this size, the technical staff at NOW is made up primarily of volunteers, and the huge screen along with the ability to better control the camera right from the back has helped them catch all the things that are happening in front of them. It has allowed them to capture a much more professional looking broadcast and was really easy for them to learn on. And at $1,995 per camera, I am already looking into how I can expand and use more of them. The new ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K has not only given our clients the power and flexibility they need right out of the box, but in addition provides all-important room to grow and expand their system,” said Perinchief.

“The workflow that I can build around Blackmagic products lets me give clients, such as NOW, which is my own church as well, broadcast quality productions. At the same time they let me be free to be creative and think outside the box,” concluded Perinchief.
