France’s Biggest Summer Festival Produced Live with Blackmagic Design

Blackmagic Design today announced that a full ATEM live production workflow was used during the French music festival Vieilles Charrues to support on stage performances from internationally renowned artists such as the Arctic Monkeys, Lily Allen, Elton John and The Black Keys.

Live production specialist Sombrero & Co, who managed all aspect of video production across the festival’s two main stages, used a centralized production hub featuring multiple ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4Ks and a Compact Videohub router for signal distribution.

Camera feeds from both stages are taken via optical fiber to ATEM Studio Converters, where they are converted to SDI and fed into the production switchers, via the 40×40 router. The ATEM Studio Converter also provides full talkback and tally, so the director and vision mixer can talk directly to the camera operators on both stages and collaborate to manage the live production of content.

“Video production at major festivals such as Vieilles Charrues is a difficult balance, because as well as capturing all of the individual bands’ performances, the festivals themselves have their own style and spirit, so you have to be able to produce content that is in keeping with that, as well as ensuring the hundreds of thousands in the crowd all have a fantastic experience,” explains Julien Brunet, Sombrero & Co.

The live program mix of performances and wide angle crowd shots, as well as commercials and sponsor messages during performance breaks, is then fed back to the router and is screened on two large scale LED screens at the side of each stage.

“When devising the workflow for the control room, we decided on a dual switcher workflow because it gave us more flexibility,” explains Brunet. “Many of the larger international acts will come with their own creative directors, who want to check the footage matches their wider vision for the artists. The additional inputs and Multi View monitoring features offered by the ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K gives us the flexibility to do that, as well as providing video content for the big screens to keep the crowd entertained.”

“We know that we can trust equipment from Blackmagic Design to not only withstand the rigors and demands of an outdoor festival environment, but also to provide us with the professional broadcast quality features that make it possible for us to produce compelling content that enhance the spirit of a festival,” concludes Brunet. “The production hub was designed to be collaborative so that our camera operators, the festival director, live artists and technicians can all understand what we are trying to achieve on every single performance, and the Blackmagic Design workflow enables us to achieve that perfectly.”

Blackmagic Design announces ATEM Camera Control Now Available

Fremont, CA – July 31, 2014 – Blackmagic Design today announced the immediate availability of ATEM Switchers Update 6.0 which adds support for controlling cameras from ATEM production switchers via the program feed to the camera. ATEM Switchers Update 6.0 is available now free of charge from the Blackmagic Design website.

Until now the ability to control cameras from the live production switcher was only available to extremely high end broadcasters who had the costly infrastructure that allowed this feature. With the new ATEM Camera Control software update, ATEM live production switchers can now control cameras via a new open standard protocol sent to the camera via the return program feed.

ATEM Camera Control is compatible with the new Blackmagic Studio Camera when running software update v1.8.2 or later. The Blackmagic Studio Camera HD and Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K models feature both optical fiber and regular SDI program return feeds to the camera and the commands from the switcher are broadcast to all cameras via this program return feed.

The Blackmagic Studio Camera can be controlled via a regular CCU style of control, however to allow even greater creativity, the Blackmagic Studio Camera has a fully featured DaVinci Resolve primary color corrector built in featuring the same YRGB style grading that is found on DaVinci Resolve.

This means the switcher operator has incredible control over the cameras and not only can settings like focus and iris be remotely set with extreme accuracy, but the operator has full lift, gamma and gain controls in full YRGB colorspace just like a full color corrector. Now any colorist that is familiar with DaVinci Resolve color grading can use their creative skills on live production work.

This new ATEM Camera Control with color correction will allow customers to not only get perfect matching between cameras on live production, but operators can also take into account changing light conditions, which is common on outdoor events. Then when customers need to generate creative looks, such as for music videos, they can push the correction further for exciting looks all in real time.

The stylish control panel in the ATEM Software Control allows normal operation of the ATEM live production switcher, but then at any time the user can select the camera tab and then see the controls for each camera. They get a familiar CCU style of interface with easy control of black and iris settings on the camera as well as focus. When controlling a camera, this camera is automatically output using one of the switchers aux. outputs so the operator can use this aux. output to local monitoring.

When more refined and creative looks are desired, the user can then push a button and the CCU style interface will expand out to a fully featured primary color corrector interface, that allows color grading using an interface very familiar to any DaVinci Resolve colorist. Every setting creatively is the same as DaVinci Resolve as the processing is the same. With the color corrector built into the camera, customers get much greater creative control because the color corrector gets full bit depth and colorspace direct from the camera’s sensor.

“Since we first demonstrated the ATEM camera control, the response has been amazing, and broadcasters have quickly recognized the advantage of the Blackmagic Studio Camera’s design and interoperability with ATEM switchers as well as the incredible color corrector built right inside the camera itself!” said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “Now they can have full control without running any extra cables using the new SDI based protocol. All that is required is a single thin SDI optical fiber or SDI cable. This is not just a simple CCU style of color adjustment but a full featured DaVinci primary color corrector built right into the camera itself. The benefit to the customer is that exciting creative looks can be achieved in live production, that previously were only possible in post production. I’m very excited to release this software and cannot wait to see what people do with it creatively!”

Blackmagic Studio Cameras HD and ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K Installed at NOW Church

InfoComm 2014, Las Vegas NV – June 18, 2014 – Blackmagic Design today announced that Ocala, Florida based NOW Church has installed and begun capturing services with two new Blackmagic Studio Cameras HD. NOW Church has also completed a full AV installation that includes two Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Cameras, a Blackmagic Cinema Camera (EF) and an ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K.

NOW Church is a large and growing Christian church that includes an active local congregation, as well as members throughout the world. To help spread its message and keep its community informed, NOW Church provides weekly sermons and regular events, as well as streamed Bible lessons and weekly broadcasts of sermons on the Internet and via local Florida broadcasters. To capture NOW Church’s high-energy worship, and rock concert-like presentation, they built an extensive live AV and broadcast infrastructure, with help from Florida based design and consulting firm Proton Global, based around Blackmagic Design products.

The Blackmagic cameras are used around the church for wide shots, stage zooms and tight body shots of the pastor, singers, plays and other church events, and include a moving Pocket Cinema Camera set up on a 40 foot track running over the heads of the crowd to the stage/pulpit. All cameras are fed into the ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K via HD-SDI cables, and two via wireless transmitters, with the ATEM located 120 feet away from the main stage.

The Blackmagic Studio Cameras, installed in May, operate as the two main cameras for the church, with Camera 1 using a Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 lens, shooting tight to full body from rear center of the church, and Camera 2 capturing full shots of the pulpit from the left using a Panasonic Lumix G 12-35mm f/2.8 lens.

“We saw the Studio Cameras at NAB and recognized right away that these would be perfect for NOW. Within a few weeks we had ordered the cameras and had them installed and working,” said Ricky Perinchief, owner of Proton Global.

“The images coming from the cameras are amazing, and the 10 inch monitor and focus control have been incredible. As with most churches this size, the technical staff at NOW is made up primarily of volunteers, and the huge screen along with the ability to better control the camera right from the back has helped them catch all the things that are happening in front of them. It has allowed them to capture a much more professional looking broadcast and was really easy for them to learn on. And at $1,995 per camera, I am already looking into how I can expand and use more of them. The new ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K has not only given our clients the power and flexibility they need right out of the box, but in addition provides all-important room to grow and expand their system,” said Perinchief.

“The workflow that I can build around Blackmagic products lets me give clients, such as NOW, which is my own church as well, broadcast quality productions. At the same time they let me be free to be creative and think outside the box,” concluded Perinchief.

New Hope Oahu Connects Its Worldwide Congregation with Blackmagic Design

InfoComm 2014, Las Vegas, NV – June 18, 2014 – Blackmagic Design today announced that New Hope Oahu, one of the largest churches in Hawaii and one of the fastest growing in the U.S., is using Blackmagic Design as the backbone of its live production and A/V setup at its main Honolulu facility. New Hope Oahu relies on Blackmagic’s ATEM 2 M/E Production Switcher and Broadcast Panel, Blackmagic Audio Monitor and a host of additional products to help broadcast services to more than 12,000 in person and online attendees.

With 31 locations in Hawaii, seven in mainland U.S. and 14 international ones, New Hope Oahu has amassed a huge following both locally and around the world. The church uses the ATEM 2 M/E Production Switcher to broadcast five services every Sunday and a midweek service on Wednesdays to two screens on either side of the stage in the 1,200 person auditorium, an outside LED screen for the 500 person overflow area and via an online stream, which is also sent to monitors throughout the facility. The service is also simulcast to three satellite campuses throughout Hawaii. The Blackmagic Audio Monitor allows the broadcast video directors to selectively monitor between the live feeds and pre recorded playbacks that need to be cued.

“Blackmagic let us streamline and clean up a lot of the clutter from patch bays, bulky switcher units and allowed us to scale down the amount of equipment we actually need,” said Tim Savage, director of media & production, New Hope Oahu. “Before Blackmagic, when we were analog based, we had four 42 space rack units filled with different types of products for conversion, switching, patching, etc. Now with Blackmagic’s equipment, we have one custom built 32 space rack that holds everything and still has space left. It’s allowed us to become very mobile as everything can simply fold up and roll from location to location for events outside of the church.”

In addition to the ATEM 2 M/E Production Switcher and Blackmagic Audio Monitor, New Hope Oahu uses Blackmagic Design’s ATEM Television Studio live production switcher, Compact Videohub router and Videohub Smart Control and Master Control, HyperDeck Studio Pro SSD recorder, SmartScope Duo for scopes and monitoring, SmartView HD monitor, several UltraStudio and Intensity I/O devices, GPI Tally, Mini Converter Sync Generator, Mini Converter UpDownCross, 12 Mini Converters SDI to HDMI and numerous OpenGear Converters.

During the week, the Compact Videohub is used to route a playback loop of announcements, music and visitor information throughout screens in the building. But it’s during the weekend that New Hope Oahu’s live production and A/V workflow really comes to life. Eight cameras capture the service, with feeds being sent to the Compact VIdeohub along with feeds from two iMacs, one running ProPresenter for video playback and a second running ProPresenter for keys overlays for lyrics and message notes. An Apple TV is used for AirPlay screen sharing when needed, and a MacBook Pro is hooked up in case either of the two primary iMacs fail.

All computers are fed to the Compact Videohub via UltraStudio capture and playback devices, and the Compact Videohub sends feeds to the ATEM 2 M/E Production Switcher. The remainder of the router’s outputs add different sources for rooms, such as recording studios, green rooms, dressing rooms, the pastor’s office, accounting rooms and main tech booth, as well as routing the ATEM 2 M/E Production Switcher’s nine outputs back to other outputs. This allows for staff to access the ATEM’s multi view feature in different places and even use it as an input back to a live output on the switcher itself.

Rounding out the setup, a HyperDeck Studio Pro is used to record and playback the message portion of the service if a speaker cannot present at all five of the day’s live services, while a SmartView HD is used to monitor all of the sources with a SmartScope Duo used to monitor scopes. The ATEM Television Studio is used for events outside of the facility, such as water baptisms, church picnics or sporting events, and those events are recorded and played back during the day’s services.

“We always try to push the boundaries of what is possible for a live event, sometimes having to come up with new ways to do things,” said Tim. “At first, Blackmagic Design gave us a way to move to HD switching at a cost we could afford, but now the products’ flexibility allows us to create almost any workflow we can dream up.”

Arsenal Football Club Produces FA Cup Parade Coverage with Blackmagic Design

Fremont, CA – June 17, 2014 – Blackmagic Design today announced that Arsenal Media Group (AMG) delivered a three hour live production of the FA Cup trophy parade with a live production workflow built around the ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K and Smart Videohub 4K. The live event was watched outside the Emirates Stadium on a 100m2 mobile LED screen, and online by 200,000 worldwide.

Due to the scale of the production, coverage of the event was split in two. The first was an OB involving a presenter interacting with fans outside the club’s flagship store, the Armoury, as part of the Arsenal Player show and rolling in VTs. Presenter Nigel Mitchell also had to interact with presenters from inside the Emirates who were involved in a second production looking back at the club’s FA Cup run.

The live production workflow had to ensure that not only could every part of the production chain communicate effectively, but more importantly, be able to get the vision from an outside broadcast (OB) to television studio underneath the Emirates, allowing talent and directors to see and make a call on everything that was happening.

Needing a robust and reliable system capable of handling five channels of HD acquisition, AMG Production Manager Petro Mnych turned to Blackmagic Design.

“Five camera channels with talkback and a live camera feed from the Sky Sports helicopter overhead were fed via a Blackmagic Design 12×12 Smart Videohub 4K router into an ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K where a program mix was created. Pushing that output back down to our main studio, we could then provide access to the OB program for playout on the worlds largest mobile LED screen,” explained AMG production manager Petro Mnych. “We also provided isolated monitoring feeds of each camera on a series of SmartView HD and SmartScope Duo 4K monitors while three HyperDeck Studio Pro SSD recorders allowed us to record all five channels for use in post production.”

Adding: “In all we used three drums of armored fiber optic, totaling around 1200 meters, to link the OB via a series of fiber tie lines to a Blackmagic Compact Videohub router and vision mixer in our studio underneath the Emirates. We had a triax based talkback and tally solution allowing each element of the production to communicate and a backup fiber solution based around the ATEM Studio Converter and ATEM Camera Converter.”

“The main product we delivered was a live video feed for fans gathering outside the stadium, which we played out on a massive 100m2 LED screen, and a second smaller 25m2 screen. Our online stream was just as important in terms of the club’s digital membership. We had one hundred thousand supporters watching live online at the same time, and over the course of three hours our total audience was closer to two hundred thousand,” said Mnych. “That is massive for a one day live event and Blackmagic Design was a key component in ensuring we could give our fans the very best possible product on the day.”

Orienteering Championship Broadcast Live with ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K

Fremont, CA – June 12, 2014 – Blackmagic Design today announced that a live production workflow featuring the ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K was used to broadcast the 2014 10MILA, one of Europe’s biggest and most watched orienteering competitions.

Organizers Tiomilakavlen Association challenged production company TVPRO with improving the experience for participants and spectators alike. Now in its 50th year, the competition followed multi person teams through day and night relays as they attempted to navigate to different locations in unfamiliar terrain.

Tasked with creating a more spectator friendly arena featuring two giant screens and a live stream of the full competition, TVPRO also produced a two day program for national broadcaster Swedish Television (SVT). The production company produced a live two day pay per view HD stream and a separate stream optimized for mobile devices, featuring competition build up and coverage of the big races. A third stream consisting of beauty shots and CG from the main arena was produced and streamed free of charge.

Underpinning the entire production was an SDI distribution network based on two 40×40 Compact Videohub routers from Blackmagic Design. The first video router handled all of the incoming camera signals and allowed the production team to de-embed audio from the video signal before the feeds were routed to a temporary Studio Control Room (SCR). The main master output on this production was mixed using an ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K with an ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Panel. A secondary ATEM 1 M/E Production Switcher was used to produce an independent master output for the arena’s second 56m2 LED screen.

“One of the main reasons for upgrading to the ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K was the additional four SDI inputs, giving us a total of 20 from the one vision mixer, and the ability to embed timecode over SDI while also future proofing our workflow for Ultra HD,” said TVPRO technical director David Thåst.

“Another ground breaking feature for us is the ability to control the six auxiliary output sources using a touch panel keypad and screen on the front of the ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K. In the past we would normally have to provide the technical operations manager with dedicated matrix output, however now they can simply use a single AUX to monitor, and if necessary live AUX switch, during a production.”

Concluding: “We also relied on some software automation during this production from JustMacros. Written using the ATEMs SDK, it allowed our production teams to take synchronized takes on multiple switchers using an XKeys panel. For example, we could instantly feed one camera source to two large screens while using the DVE’s on both production switchers to stretch the image across two LED’s and add CG over the top.”

Blackmagic Design Announces Powerful ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K

New advanced Ultra HD live production switcher allows live production in SD, HD and Ultra HD, with 20 6G-SDI sources, SuperSource™, DVE, motion graphics and much more!

NAB 2014, Las Vegas, USA – April 7, 2014 – Blackmagic Design today announced ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K, a new extremely powerful 2 M/E based Ultra HD live production switcher with 20 6G-SDI inputs, SuperSource layering engine and much more for $3,995.

ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K will be shown on the Blackmagic Design NAB 2014 booth at #SL219.

The new ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K includes 20 independent SD, HD or Ultra HD 4K video inputs with each input featuring a full frame synchronizer. ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K also includes all the features expected from a professional switcher, including chroma key, transitions, DVE, media pool, downstream keyers, audio mixer, two multi view outputs and 6G-SDI and HDMI 4K video connections.

This new high end model of the ATEM Production Studio family includes all the powerful features of the other models as well as the exciting SuperSource multi layer processor. SuperSource provides customers with a completely separate 5 layer switcher with the power of 4 picture in picture DVEs and 4 keyers assigned to any ATEM video input. SuperSource allows for multi camera interviews or picture in picture production while leaving all M/Es, keyers and the DVE completely free for other tasks.

ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K supports 6G-SDI so it can be switched between most SD, HD and Ultra HD video formats instantly. Ultra HD is four times the resolution of regular high definition video for a massive 3840 x 2160 frame size. The new 6G-SDI and HDMI 4K video connections effortlessly handle Ultra HD and customers can connect all cameras using a single cable. There is also a high definition down converted HD-SDI program output for when the switcher is operating in Ultra HD formats, but a regular HD program feed is required.

The ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K features a strong and elegant 2 rack unit machined aluminum front panel based design. The front panel keypad lets customers select between each of the 6 independent auxiliary output sources and the 5 inch LCD screen provides instant feedback on the status of the auxiliary output. The aux switching is also a valuable tech monitoring tool for setting up and for live aux switching during production.

The ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K includes the ATEM Software Control Panel for both Mac and Windows that provides complete control of the switcher from a laptop or desktop computer. This software provides full control of transitions, keyers, built in audio mixer and switcher settings. If customers prefer working with a traditional hardware control panel they can add either a ATEM 1 M/E Broadcast Panel or ATEM 2 M/E Broadcast Panel.

ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K features two built in multi view monitoring outputs so customers can view all sources on a single SDI monitor or HDMI TV. Because the multi view outputs are down converted to HD, even when operating in Ultra HD, customers can still use commonly available HD monitors or televisions. Each of the two multi view outputs includes independent views for program, preview and 8 switcher sources.

ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K includes the same high quality transitions found on regular high definition professional switchers, but now all these transitions operate in native Ultra HD. Customers get the choice of mix, dip and wipe effects with full control of the transition type, pattern, length and other attributes. ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K includes 2 built in media players that can store up to 32 full resolution Ultra HD still frames with key and fill. Media players are ideal for lower third name straps, logos and more. ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K also includes a Photoshop™ plug in that allows direct download of graphics and titles from Photoshop to the switcher.

For seamless multi layering, ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K includes 4 upstream keyers and 2 downstream keyers. The upstream keyers includes independent chroma, pattern, shaped and linear keying. These keyers are independent of the SuperSource processor which adds another 5 layers to the massive number of layers available in this switcher.

A built in audio mixer is also included that allows any switcher to use embedded HDMI and SDI audio from cameras as well as external audio from the analog XLR and HiFi audio inputs. Customers can use the mixer in direct input mixing or in audio follow video where the audio from each camera will automatically be cross faded while switching. The analog audio inputs are great for microphones, audio mixers or music players.

ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K uses an aviation grade operating system that ensures mission critical reliability, unlike cheap computer based switchers that interrupt video if the computer crashes.

“With a flood of Ultra HD televisions hitting the market, consumers are gearing up for an amazing transition into a cinema viewing experience in the home! This new ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K is a massive switcher that’s $1000 less than the model it replaces, but features a better design, better technology and many more inputs, plus of course the ability to operate in Ultra HD!” said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “Live production is the fastest way to generate massive amounts of Ultra HD content quickly and live events offer some of the most exciting sources for entertainment. We think even the largest broadcaster will find the new ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K has all the features and inputs they require for large complex live production jobs!”

Blackmagic Design Announces Blackmagic Studio Camera

Introducing the world’s smallest live broadcast camera with the world’s largest viewfinder!

NAB 2014, Las Vegas, USA – April 7, 2014 – Blackmagic Design today announced Blackmagic Studio Camera, a new camera specifically designed for live production and available in 1080 HD and Ultra HD models starting from only $1,995.

Blackmagic Studio Camera will be demonstrated on the Blackmagic Design NAB 2014 booth at #SL219.

Blackmagic Studio Camera is one of the most advanced broadcast cameras for live production because it includes features specifically targeted at the requirements of live production! Currently customers often need to use cameras designed for general video production for live work and this means they don’t get features that live production demands, such as large viewfinder, talkback, tally, optical fiber and a super strong metal design.

Inside the incredibly tough and lightweight magnesium alloy body, the Blackmagic Studio Camera features a very large 10” viewfinder, long duration 4 hour battery, talkback, tally indicators, phantom powered microphone connections and built in optical fiber and SDI connections that let you connect to a live production switcher with a single cable!

One of the problems of cameras used in live production is small viewfinders and the Blackmagic Studio Camera includes a massive 10 inch screen that allows incredible creativity when framing and accurately focussing. The viewfinder’s LCD is extremely bright and has a very wide viewing angle so it is perfect for use even in direct sunlight. The camera also includes a large fold up sun shield making it perfect for outdoor use and the sun shade also acts as a privacy shield when in use.

The Blackmagic Studio Camera features an active Micro Four Thirds lens mount that is compatible with an incredibly wide range of lenses and adapters. This allows customers to use high quality photo lenses for smaller setups or fixed camera use, and then use high end broadcast ENG lenses for large live broadcasts using an MFT to B4 lens mount adapter. This means customers can start out with a more affordable setup based on photo lenses and then move to larger but more expensive ENG lenses as they grow their business.

The Blackmagic Studio Camera includes a built in fiber optic connection, allowing customers to get the many advantages of long lengths and small size and weight of optical fiber for a single thin tether cable to connect cameras to your live production switchers. The optical fiber connection is bi-directional and carries HD or Ultra HD video with embedded audio, talkback, tally and even camera remote control. The built in talkback allows the camera operator and crew to communicate at all times during production using commonly available and very robust general aviation headsets for better quality talkback with better noise canceling at a much lower cost.

The Blackmagic Studio Camera supports the tally SDI standard used on the ATEM range of live production switchers and tally lights illuminate automatically with a light on the front for talent, and a light above the viewfinder for the operator, making it easy for the cast and crew to see which cameras are on air. To allow independent operation with only a single optical fiber cable, the Blackmagic Studio Camera also includes a massive 4 hour battery that means the camera has enough power for use on long live productions as well as setup time before the event starts. The operator side control panel allows instant access to focus, iris and on screen menu settings. On screen menus are overlaid on the viewfinder and slide on and off as needed.

“I have dreamed of a camera perfectly designed for live production for a long time”, said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design, “When we looked at how we would design a camera for live production what really surprised us was how small we could make it, but then the viewfinder would also become small. We did not want a small viewfinder, we wanted a very large viewfinder and so we ended up with this amazing camera that’s incredibly tiny, but then the viewfinder is incredibly large. It’s really a dream to operate a camera with such a large viewfinder and it’s amazing the detail in focus and framing that’s available to the operator! I totally love this camera and it’s my dream product!”

Sky News Arabia Puts Blackmagic Design at the Heart of Skynet Initiative

Fremont, CA – March 24, 2014 – Blackmagic Design today announced that Sky News Arabia, the Arabic language 24 hour breaking news broadcaster, has launched The Content Hub, a new virtual production, transmission (TX) and playout environment, equipped with broadcast infrastructure from Blackmagic Design, including the ATEM 2 M/E Production Switcher, Compact Videohub and UltraStudio 4K.

Engineers for the Skynet project have built in high levels of redundancy across every aspect of the new virtual studio workflow. 40 x 40 Compact Videohub routers handle signal distribution for The Content Hub, while separate 16 x 16 Micro Videohubs are responsible for monitoring. The smaller router handles multiview outputs from the vision mixers and other sources while also feeding streaming encoders.

Receiving feeds from studios and live positions around the world, Sky News Arabia routes those signals via the Compact Videohub to the ATEM 2 M/E Production Switchers where the show is crafted. A second ATEM 2 M/E Production Switcher is used for adding graphics. Four UltraStudio 4K I/O devices are connected to Mac Minis in the studio outputting Internet based programs.

Using the ATEM’s SDK, Sky News Arabia’s developers have built a custom control system and graphical user interface (GUI) for the system, providing a simple, user friendly interface that manages the multiple devices, redundancy and system flexibility. Each component in the workflow has a mirrored counterpart, which means operators can lose either and remain on air uninterrupted.

“The system we’ve developed allows multiple workflows incorporating two or more of every component; so that’s two Compact Videohub routers feeding four ATEM 2 M/E Production Switchers,” explains Dave Mace, Project Manager for Sky News Arabia. “However, the custom GUI means operators only see this as one system regardless of what is actually controlled to achieve their objective. If any components should fail, the GUI automatically detects this and changes what is available within the user interface.”

Dominic Baillie, CTO for Sky News Arabia adds: “Our in house development team worked closely with Blackmagic’s developers to get the GUI operating how we wanted it. Having the SDK available was a massive selling point when it came to choosing Blackmagic Design. The solution offers the perfect mix of high redundancy and broadcast quality output in flexible and extremely easy to use systems. We opted to go with Blackmagic’s ATEM 2 M/E Production Switcher because it was rich in features, reasonably priced and we had access to the SDK. This afforded us a higher degree of flexibility when it came to developing the virtual studio.”

ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K Used at Justin Bieber’s Australia Concert

Fremont, CA – Blackmagic Design today announced that ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K was used at one of Justin Bieber’s recent Melbourne, Australia concerts, providing all of the concert’s video switching. Blackmagic Design’s HyperDeck Studio Pro, SmartView Duo and SmartView HD products were also used for the live event and recording of the concert.

The concert, sponsored by Vevo TV, was held for a special fan of Justin’s who had recently been in a car accident and was unable to attend his main concerts held in Australia. The fan, along with fifty of her friends and family, were treated to a private concert, which was also captured for future replay on Vevo TV.

Rapid TV and Power AV, Melbourne, Australia based video production suppliers, handled the live switching facilities for the event with Blackmagic Design equipment provided by New Magic Australia. Peter Morris of Rapid TV was the OB manager for the concert and said the ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K was used with five HD cameras. Feeds from the cameras were switched to a number of large monitors around the stage and then pulled together into a line cut.

“This was a very special night for Justin’s fans, and he wanted to provide the feeling of a full concert but still have a small, intimate setting,” said Peter. “There were 50 fans there and a crew of approximately 30, so it was a very intensive production. It had to be a high quality live broadcast and we had to get high quality concert footage. That is why we chose the ATEM switchers, because it gave us broadcast quality switching that could handle the scope of the event, and they were reliable,” finished Peter.

Grant Villiers from Power AV commented, “We had two fixed, one dolly, one steadi and one crane camera, all being fed into the ATEM. These were all straight shots, without any graphics or effects, and they were sent to several large monitors around the stage, as well as to SmartView HD and SmartView Duo monitors used by the crew. A cut of the show was recorded in a HyperDeck Studio Pro, with a second being used as backup.”

ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K is an advanced Ultra HD live production switcher with 6G-SDI technology that is available for only US$2,495. It includes ten independent 6G-SDI inputs each with frame sync, built in DVE with zoom, scale and rotate, four upstream chroma keyers, three independent aux outputs with front panel control and a large media pool that holds both still frame graphics as well as motion video clips. ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K also features a strong and elegant machined aluminum front design, the ATEM Software Control Panel for complete control of the switcher from a laptop or desktop computer and built in multi view monitoring so customers can view sources on a single SDI monitor or HDMI TV.

“The ATEM was perfect for the event. I was able to work in 25p through the whole workflow and I had all the inputs and outputs I could have wanted. The whole Blackmagic setup worked great,” finished Grant.
