ssors Evaluate Students with Vaddio HD Cameras at William Carey University

On October 23, 2007, the Board of Trustees at William Carey University (WCU), located in Hattiesburg, Miss., unanimously voted to construct the WCU College of Osteopathic Medicine. The rationale was to open the College of Osteopathic Medicine to address the severe shortage of physicians in Mississippi and surrounding states and to impact the healthcare of rural Mississippians. In summer of 2010, the new facility opened and the College of Osteopathic Medicine enrolled an inaugural class of 110 students. Three buildings comprise the medical complex: Academic Building, Medical Arts Building and the Asbury Administrative Center.

The Medical Arts Building consists of a clinical skills area/clinic, two simulator rooms, eight clinical exam rooms, a furnished video production/teleconference studio, and student government and faculty offices. Scott Daniel, President of Vision Integration – based out of Daphne, Ala. – provided the Medical Arts Building with the AV equipment to accommodate eight clinical exam rooms and two simulator rooms.

Exam Rooms
The eight clinical exam rooms are setup to emulate a doctor’s examination room for use as a teaching tool to see students interact with patients. “They do 30-minute sessions twice a week and they wanted to be able to record each session so both students and professors can go back and watch them,” explained Daniels. “Each recorded session can be used for recording and evaluating student improvement, consistency and interaction with patients.”

These rooms are used primarily for practicing history, clinical and physical exams.

Dr. Judy L. Turner, D.O., chair of the Family Medicine Department adds, “The video capture allowed us [the faculty] to spread our resources a bit. We needed a way to test the students’ clinical and physical exam skills in an efficient, yet effective manner. Using the recordings, we can standardize the students’ results and eventually create a standardized patient program to review students for consistency.”

Each room is equipped with two high definition Vaddio WallVIEW HD-20 PTZ camera systems – one camera getting a tight shot of the patient on the examining table and another camera capturing a wide-shot of the entire room. “Each examination room is controlled from a single control room with three Vaddio ProductionVIEW Precision Camera Controllers connected to four quads, says Daniels. “So we get all 16 cameras on four 32-inch monitors with three controllers.”

Simulation Rooms
There are also two simulation rooms with Laerdal full-body simulator men for teaching students how to interact with patients in a realistic manner, explained Turner. “These rooms are used primarily for second year Clinical Sciences classes for Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) training. Students use plastic models of breasts and pelvises – leading to eventual practice on their classmates. The simulation rooms are also available for community-based training and Turner is hoping to eventually start collaborating with the Joseph and Nancy Fail School of Nursing, also located on the WCU campus.

Each simulation room has five Vaddio WallVIEW HD-20 camera systems. “One camera is placed in the center right over the gurney,” explains Daniel. “And there are four more in each one of the corners of the room with presets – you name it – it’s the whole nine yards.”

Everything is being captured and recorded via DVR and is ultimately saved to the server or a DVD for students/professors to take home.

“This solution really gives the clinical faculty the time and resources to examine the students and not miss anything,” explained Turner. “It’s been extremely useful in helping to not only grade and evaluate students, but it really lets them self-evaluate and watch their patient experience.”

Hot-Shot Preset Camera Controller Designed for Lecture Capture Systems

Vaddio, the world leader in robotic PTZ cameras and specialty camera control systems, has once again revolutionized camera control for the classroom with the newly redesigned Hot-Shot Camera Controller. By adding control for Vaddio’s ClearVIEW HD-Series PTZ cameras, the Hot-Shot now meets both the technical and affordable requirements today’s higher education professionals demand.

“As the leader in camera control systems for education, we were given the challenge to provide a simple-to-use, low-cost single camera control system that could be deployed in not just one, but all classrooms equipped with lecture capture systems,” explains CEO of Vaddio, Rob Sheeley. “The Hot-Shot Camera Controller provides completely automated preset camera control for less than $1,000. Now schools can afford to have camera control in every classroom across campus.”

The Hot-Shot can control any of the Vaddio ClearVIEW HD-Series of PTZ Cameras and will support up to 16 presets. It’s used in conjunction with Vaddio’s preset trigger devices including the MicVIEW Mic Mixer/Switcher, StepVIEW Mats, AutoVIEW IR sensors, PresenterPOD and TouchVIEW. Triggering one of these devices will automatically send commands through the Hot-Shot to move the camera to a specified preset (wide-shot, lectern, whiteboard, etc.) When used with Vaddio ClearVIEW HD-Series cameras, setting a trigger also stores a preset inside the camera, creating a true low-cost single-camera lecture capture solution.

Vaddio Releases IP Camera Control Upgrade to ClearVIEW HD-USB PTZ Camera Systems

Vaddio, the global leader in robotic PTZ cameras and camera control systems, today released a major software update to its USB Camera line. The free Version 1.1 software update allows ClearVIEW HD-USB PTZ camera users the ability to control the camera from any computer or mobile device that supports a web browser.

“When we launched our EasyUSB camera systems we knew that our customers would demand a more sophisticated control approach than a traditional IR Remote Control,” explains Vaddio CEO, Rob Sheeley. “By connecting to the camera’s Ethernet port, users can now browse to the embedded web server built into the camera and have complete control of the camera by using the preconfigured web page user control panel.”

Internal web pages within the camera allow control of the HD-USB camera via Internet connection through a standard web browser. Users can now adjust pan, tilt, zoom and home controls, as well as pan, tilt and zoom speed controls; switch video sources, and store and recall six camera presets. Administrators have the additional ability to control security passwords, change the IP address, view diagnostics, access firmware upgrades and Help settings. The IP address will be displayed onscreen out of the composite, analog component (YPbPr) and the USB video output.

For more information on the ClearVIEW HD-USB camera upgrade please visit the Vaddio website at www.vaddio.com.

Vaddio Selects Industry Leading IT Distributors to Represent IT Channels

Vaddio’s industry leading EasyUSB video and audio conferencing products will now be available to the IT industry. Because the recently launched EasyUSB tools can also be used as a computer peripheral, Vaddio has selected three IT distributors to provide distribution to the IT community: Visitec Distribution, HD Distributing and Stampede.

Since 2001, Visitec Distribution has been a certified distributor for Tandberg Videoconferencing products, now Cisco Telepresence. Visitec will continue to grow this existing IT channel by adding Vaddio’s EasyUSB solutions. “Visitec Distribution is proud to expand on our long history with Vaddio by being named as a national distributor of the Vaddio EasyUSB products for the IT partner channel,” says President of Visitec, Chris Reiss.  “The steady adoption of software-based codecs has created demand for a high quality PTZ camera and room audio solution that enables group collaboration. The Vaddio EasyUSB product addresses this emerging need with simplicity and cost effectiveness.”

HD Distributing is a national value-added distributor of videoconferencing and Unified Communication solutions. In an effort to provide partners an end-to-end solution, HD Distributing will add Vaddio EasyUSB tools to its existing product line that includes Radvision (an Avaya Company), AvTeq, Chief, LG and Global Conferencing Solutions. “We are extremely excited to add Vaddio to our product portfolio,” explains CEO of HD Consulting, Steve Garber. “As companies embrace Unified Communications and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) models, the need to conference with anyone, anywhere has become a necessity. Vaddio’s EasyUSB products allow any room to become a high definition TelePresence suite, with support for virtually any desktop conferencing platform, and enables companies large or small to expand their video collaboration capabilities.”

Known for its value-added distribution, Stampede is a leading distributor of presentation equipment – specifically Sony Videoconferencing solutions. “Vaddio’s EasyUSB is a game-changing product line,” says Stampede President & COO, Kevin Kelly. “Together with our other videoconferencing solutions, specifically those from Sony and Radvision, Stampede now offers an unprecedented range of offerings for all IT applications, platforms and price points. What more, every one of our system solutions comes backed with the necessary engineering expertise and product knowledge required to make every solution we sell an easy turnkey experience for customers.”

New In-House AV at Vandenberg Air Force Base

Placing a satellite into polar orbit isn’t the only cause for a launch at Vandenberg Air Force Base (VAFB) on California’s “Central Coast”.
In January of 2010, Jensen AV launched the newly renovated Pacific Coast Club, the on-base banquet and meeting space at VAFB. The facility hosts a variety of events including promotional ceremonies, conferences and other military functions. Generals and dignitaries speak at trainings and launches. It even supports non-military community events – think comedy shows, weddings and local high school proms.

Prior to the new system installation, the banquet staff would have to call in the on-base AV rental company for any presentation equipment or services. The banquet staff would then have to call in a request to the subcontractor to order a sound system, video camera, screen and projector – any piece of AV gear. And on top of that, a contractor would have to be hired to operate the system.

“This was an expensive, complex and sometimes frustrating system considering the amount of events taking place in the facility,” explained Jane Darrah, Director of Special Events and Catering for the Pacific Coast Club. “We no longer have to quickly flip rooms from one type of an event to another – setting up and tearing down all of the AV equipment off of the floor.”

The facility offers a large three-section ballroom, as well as two smaller breakout rooms (Warrior Room 1 and 2). The large ballroom can be split into three separate meeting spaces, all with individual AV capabilities. Combined with the two Warrior rooms, at any given point in time up to five presentations can be taking place concurrently.

“It really enables us to host a variety of events with different types of audiovisual needs simultaneously – without any interference between rooms,” stated Darrah.

Each section in the large ballroom contains a Vaddio ClearVIEW HD-18 PTZ Camera, a Sanyo 7,000-Lumen DLP projector and a sound system. The Warrior rooms are also equipped with Vaddio ClearVIEW HD-18 PTZ Cameras, a Sanyo 7,000-Lumen LCD projector and sound systems.

Each of the five rooms is equipped with a DVD player, a PC for PowerPoint presentations and an 8-inch portable AMX touch controller for individual room control of playing, pausing, switching sources and video playback. Now the banquet staff can set up the AV in each room, literally start setting up the tables and chairs, and move onto the AV setup.

Back in the control room, a ProductionVIEW HD switcher/mixer controls the cameras, while an AMX Modero VG Series controls the entire room system.

“Because all of the rooms are connected, a single camera operator can actually view, monitor and record all five rooms from one central control room,” said Salgado, Sales and Engineering Director of Jensen AV. The operator also has the ability to route video from one room to another. If the main ballroom is at capacity, video can be pushed to the Warrior rooms as an overflow option. If a more intimate demonstration is taking place in the Warrior rooms, video can be routed to the main ballroom for overflow.

“This really gives them the flexibility they need,” explained Salgado. “The whole point is that they’re understaffed, so now they only need one AV tech to run the entire event center.”

Adhering to the space’s existing aesthetics, the sleek look and feel was a must when designing the system. The products had to blend into the room design – and of course the existing lighting. And there isn’t much lighting in those rooms. “Because the lighting is varied and not very bright, it was extremely helpful to have Vaddio’s Quick-Connect CCUs. Salgado elaborated, “Having the ability to alter the color of the video image from one central location saves hours and hours of time. We tested several cameras and everybody liked the Vaddio HD-18 cameras the best.”

Not to say there weren’t any obstacles along the way.

The 50-foot height of the rooms presented a problem for mounting the screens and cameras. “The sections were split by 30-foot ceilings, and then we had to mount everything another 20-feet past that,” explained Salgado. “It was just a feat to safely and securely mount everything into place.”

Another challenge posed was coordinating and working around rooms in use. Because it’s a military base the facility never shut down. “While we were installing equipment in one room there was actually a meeting going in the other room,” said Salgado. “We would have to finish a room, move to the next and completely pack up and leave the room usable. When a General needed a meeting the general got the meeting. But they were really good about working with us and giving us notice so it worked out.”

“They’ve been so much happier as far as being able to control the equipment. Being able to have an ad-hoc meeting really easily – being able to sell the room now with installed gear – as opposed to an empty room. It’s made it much easier to market the facility.”

And Darrah agreed. “There aren’t any facilities in our community that can compare to ours. Our AV capabilities combined with our food service, location, size and incredible pricing takes us to the top of the list for meeting events in the area. This equipment is keeping the customers coming. Without it, we would lose business to a facility that is equipped. It is an absolute asset.”

Vaddio Debuts New Universal Quick-Connect CCU for ClearVIEW HD PTZ Cameras at InfoComm 2012

Vaddio, the global leader in robotic PTZ cameras and camera control systems, will debut the new Universal Quick-Connect CCU for the ClearVIEW line of HD PTZ cameras at InfoComm, June 13th – 15th, 2012.

Outputs now include HD-SDI/SDI, HDMI and analog HD component for extreme flexibility in system design and integration. All three outputs are live simultaneously. A new industrial design enables the adjustment of white balance, color, pedestal, gamma, knee, chroma, detail, iris and gain functions with the press of a button. These controls deliver a more accurate representation of the image that is being captured, and the ability to color-match and shade multiple cameras. User-defined adjustments can be stored on three Scene-Store buttons.

Universal Quick-Connect CCU

Universal Quick-Connect CCU

“The new Universal Quick-Connect CCU represents a new milestone in camera image control technology,” explains Rob Sheeley, President of Vaddio. “The challenge with camera control is that every camera model has its own unique set of image control parameters, buried deep in the camera control code, that need to be controlled and adjusted to optimize the image quality. We designed the CCU with a new user-programmable illuminated LED display that shows all of the individual image control functions in the camera and what they are set at. We are also now outputting all three major HD video standards: HDMI, HD/SDI and analog component from the back of the CCU – allowing the integrator to choose whatever video output standard they’d like.”

The Universal Quick-Connect CCU still delivers high-quality HD video, power and control over three Cat. 5 cables up to 500 feet without the loss of video quality or latency. A new advanced Auto-Skew differential cable conditioning system automates skew adjustment and a new Fine-Tune mode is also available for excessive cable loss. The Universal Quick-Connect CCU system is available with Vaddio ClearVIEW HD cameras including the HD-20, HD-19 and HD-18.

Stop by Booth C8729 at InfoComm to see the new CCUs, as well as Vaddio’s complete line of cameras and camera control systems. For free VIP InfoComm passes or to set up an appointment at InfoComm please contact kperkins@vaddio.com or by calling (763) 971-4409.
