Listen Technologies iDSP Assistive Listening System Chosen for Congregation Emanu-El Synagogue in San Francisco, California

BLUFFDALE, UT, January 20, 2014 — San Francisco’s Congregation Emanu-El has been northern California’s landmark Jewish synagogue, and one of the most dynamic Jewish communities in America, since its founding in 1850. Now in its third site (a gorgeous structure dedicated in 1926, at Lake Street and Arguello Boulevard), the congregation is the spiritual home of over 2,100 households. With the temple’s membership in mind, the facility recently integrated iDSP (Intelligent Digital Signal Processing) assistive listening products from Listen Technologies Corporation, the leading designer, manufacturer and supplier of assistive listening products for over 16 years. Martinez, California-based firm Pro Media / UltraSound – a leading professional A/V integrator specializing in installations as varied as Levi’s Stadium [the home of the 49ers], the de Young Museum, the Santa Clara Convention Center, the San Francisco Opera House, corporate and worship facilities of all sizes and others – worked closely with Listen personnel on the project, completed in time for the High Holy Days.
The Listen Technologies components selected for the Congregation Emanu-El installation included LT-800-072-01 Stationary RF Transmitter (72 MHz); LA-122 Universal Antenna Kit (72 and 216 MHz); LA-326 Universal Rack Mounting Kit; LR-4200-072-P1 iDSP RF Receiver Package (72 MHz); LA-304 Assistive Listening Notification Signage Kit; and LA-381-01 Intelligent 12-Unit Charging Tray.

The systems were integrated in both the synagogue’s Main Sanctuary (1640 capacity) and smaller Martin Meyer Sanctuary (350 capacity). Pro Media / UltraSound Project Lead Patrick Waller explains how this installation came about: “Congregation Emanu-El has a number of elderly congregants and others with hearing loss or impairment. There were some assistive listening systems in place, but they weren’t compatible with certain hearing aids, or were just not effective for some members. Judi Leff, Director of Operations and Office Management at Congregation Emanu-El, is a longtime customer and friend of ours, and she contacted me about upgrading their assistive listening tools, and we explored a number of options. Products from Listen Technologies immediately came to mind, but some of our ideas were not feasible right away, because the space’s marble floors prevent wiring/looping techniques. Sam Nord at Listen let us know about their iDSP products being unveiled earlier this year. Everything clicked into place for the project, and we were able to move forward immediately. Everyone at Listen was so helpful during the planning process, and the installation was seamless and efficient.”
Pro Media / UltraSound installed and commissioned the system quickly, to have everything in place in time for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services, which are some of the most well-attended services of the worship year. Waller continues, “After the High Holy Days, we checked in with Judi to see how the iDSP systems had worked – she said that there were several congregants for whom it made a huge difference, and she even got an email from one who had been part of the congregation for decades, and said that this is the first time she’s been able to really hear the service in four years. And it was an easy installation – we basically got the system configured and handed it over to them. Plug and play!”
Judi Leff stated, “We are always trying to make sure we are compliant with ADA and offering the latest technology to our congregants. A more involved installation was going to cost many thousands of dollars, and as a non-profit house of worship, we were very concerned. When Pro Media / UltraSound figured out what a problem solver Listen iDSP would be, we were so excited, and our congregants were happy as well. One happy congregant emailed me: ‘I’m thrilled with the new system. It worked for me and I hope it continues. It’s the first time in about four years that I have been able to hear.’”

The iDSP line was introduced by Listen Technologies earlier this year. In developing the iDSP, Listen closely focused on the user experience and ease of dispensing, inventory management and battery management at the venue – all based on input from consultants, system integrators, venue owners and end users. The iDSP 72MHz receiver revolutionizes how an RF system works, offering precise clarity with 20 dB less hiss than other RF receivers. The integrated neck loop improves the experience for people who have hearing aids and cochlear implants with telecoils. The result is a significantly improved listening experience, including an integrated neck loop/lanyard; streamlined dispensing, collecting and care; and environmentally friendly advanced battery technology – in the smallest, lightest device of its kind.

Listen Technologies Loop Induction Assistive Listening Systems Nominated for “Impact Product of the Year” Awards by Readers of Commercial Integrator and TechDecisions

BLUFFDALE, UT, December 9, 2014 — Listen Technologies Corporation, the leading designer, manufacturer and supplier of assistive listening products for over 16 years, is proud to announce that its Loop Induction Assistive Listening Systems (ListenLoop) have been nominated, along with 28 other industry-leading products, for the “Impact Product of the Year” Awards by readers of Commercial Integrator (integration professionals) and TechDecisions (primarily end users).

The Commercial Integrator website listing the nominations states these criteria: “We wanted our end-of-year product coverage to be dictated by the consultants and integrators who read CI and the end users who read TechDecisions. We asked readers to submit thoughts on products that made a significant impact on their businesses in 2014. Maybe the product offers features previously unavailable; Maybe it lowers the price point enough to expand a feature to new customer groups; Maybe it reduces design or installation time enough to save the integration firm on labor; Maybe its features make service easier and facilitate recurring revenue; or Maybe it’s just incredibly cool. We’ve highlighted 29 products that, according to readers, meet those criteria.”

ListenLoop technology makes it possible to extend users’ assistive listening solution to anyone with a t-coil enabled hearing aid or cochlear implant. That means users can offer their visitors or patrons the uniquely personal and discrete experience of listening to an audio signal directly through their own hearing aid—without any additional receivers or equipment.

The nominations page cites the following quote, from Mike Shelton, senior systems engineer, AMT Systems, who experienced ListenLoop via a Commercial Integrator Hands-On Review: “With a typical RF system everybody wears a pack and you have a visual indication that you have a hearing issue. With [ListenLoop, on the other hand] you just flip a switch and you can hear perfectly clear and nobody knows … so people don’t feel like they’re being stigmatized. This makes using the system completely invisible.”

Russ Gentner, Listen CEO, stated, “It is always a special honor to be nominated for accolades by journalists and manufacturer peers, but it is another honor altogether to be nominated by integrators and end users – the individuals using our products out in the real world. We are tremendously proud to be acknowledged as we continue to provide the best solutions in the world of assistive listening.”

Listen Technologies Wireless Digital Conferencing System Chosen for Board Room at Natural History Museum of Utah

BLUFFDALE, UT, October 30, 2014 — The Natural History Museum of Utah has selected a Wireless Digital Conferencing System from Listen Technologies Corporation, a leading designer, manufacturer and distributor of assistive listening products for over 16 years, for its Swaner Forum – a multi-use space used for board meetings, presentations and other events. The Natural History Museum of Utah, located at the Rio Tinto Center in Salt Lake City, faced several challenges when selecting a conference system for the space: the room is approximately 2,000 square feet in area, so a wireless system was preferred; the space is frequently used for multiple purposes, and a system had to be easy to quickly set up and take down; and board members often travel, and with everybody spread out in a larger room, a centralized speaker would not provide the necessary clarity if somebody participated via telephone. To meet these challenges, the museum purchased a multi-unit Televic conference system from Listen Technologies authorized dealer Avidex that could be distributed throughout the room and support localized conversation.

The system components include one WCAP-C1 wireless digital conference access point and power supply; one WC-CD-C wireless digital conferencing chairman unit with microphone and battery pack; 11 WC-DD-C wireless digital conferencing delegate units, each with microphone and battery pack; and two WC-CHT charging trays for six battery packs each.

According to Chris Eisenberg, the Museum’s Director of Philanthropy, “The Swaner Forum is a large space with beautiful views. We did the research, and it seemed like this Televic system from Listen was the best solution. Sometimes our board members are out of town but need to be part of the meeting, so we’ll patch a conference call into the system. The person on the conference call can hear everybody talking in the room, and everybody in the room can hear the person on the conference call. It’s a much more elegant solution than just putting a speaker phone in the middle of the room — and the wireless aspect allows us to easily move units where they’re most needed.”

Additionally, Listen has provided solutions for the Museum’s annual fundraiser, held in its soaring grand lobby, The Canyon. Working closely with Listen and other partners, the Museum’s team combined video mapping on the Canyon walls, a closed-captioning service performing live transcriptions during the event, traditional powered speakers along the edge of the space, and wireless conference units from Listen at many of the tables. “From our use of the Listen system, it occurred to us that they can be helpful with sound reinforcement during our annual fundraising gala. The resulting system provided attendees with an enhanced audio experience. Everyone was very happy with the results.”

Eisenberg added that he and his colleagues have also appreciated the assistance they’ve received with the system, “The support locally has been great from both the reseller that we purchased through as well as directly from Listen Technologies. They have been incredibly helpful to us.”

Established in 1963, the Natural History Museum of Utah cares for over 1.2 million objects and offers innovative exhibitions and educational programs to thousands of residents and visitors each year, including traveling and permanent exhibits, special events and other programs. The Museum also offers a variety of outreach programs to communities and schools throughout Utah, reaching every school district in the state annually. The Museum has an active research program with more than 30 scientists and 10 field expeditions each year.

Listen Technologies Offers Courses for Architects on ADA and CBC Guidelines for Serving People with Hearing Disabilities

— Courses offer American Institute of Architects (AIA) certification credits, a yearly requirement for AIA members —

BLUFFDALE, UT, October 3, 2014 — Listen Technologies Corporation, the leading designer, manufacturer and distributor of assistive listening products for over 16 years, has made it an ongoing priority to offer contractors, system integrators, consultants, architects and venue owners the most up-to-date resources on how to best serve those requiring assistive listening. These resources explore and clarify guidelines and recommendations set forth by institutions and legislative efforts including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the California Building Code (CBC), the Accessibility of Ontarians with Disability Act and other related measures. Compliance with these guidelines is not only mandatory and legally enforced, but a clear moral imperative; however, many professionals, although well-meaning, let certain considerations in regard to hearing disability fall through the cracks when designing new structures or updating existing facilities. A new set of courses offered by Listen is specifically designed to educate architects on ADA and CBC recommendations, offering credits for American Institute of Architects (AIA) certification in the process.

Listen Technologies has been approved to teach two courses, both earning (1) LU/HSW credit:
1. Course Title: ADA Assistive Listening Legislation
2. Course Title: California Building Code & The ADA Assistive Listening Legislation

Course objectives:
• Understand the impact of the new requirements of the ADA/CBC
• Understand the unique sound needs of the hard of hearing community
• Apply the ADA (or CBC, in California) to the welfare of people requiring assistive listening systems
• Recognize the technologies that can reconnect people to a positive experience in any venue

The courses are offered on an individual basis by Listen personnel at sites around the U.S. To inquire about a scheduled session or to set up a course date, please email sales@listentech.com. The company will also have the courses available as webinars at www.listentech.com.

For architects to remain certified through AIA, they are required to have 18 total learning units each year. Of these 18 required (LU) Learning Units, 12 of them must be in the category of Health, Safety and Welfare (HSW). Listen has developed these courses (ADA & the CBC) along with their objectives, to align under HSW learning units. These courses offered by Listen are informative and educational in nature and talk about the “why” of hearing loss – how many people have hearing loss, why hearing aids are not enough in a venue, what happens when people have hearing loss and what that is like – and then goes into the ADA and CBC codes, which are actually fairly straightforward. They then address the different types of solutions offered by Listen and the pros/cons of each technology.

Cory Schaeffer, Listen Technologies Vice President of Business Development, states, “Offering a presentation that provides AIA/HSW Learning Units to architects allows Listen to share our unique wealth of knowledge with this group of professionals. Often AV is the last ‘trade’ brought into a project, and for some assistive listening technologies that is way too late. These courses allow us to share information about hearing loss with architects and the fact that it’s the largest disability covered under the ADA (17% compared to 1.4% requiring wheelchair access), as well as what the ADA and other building code requirements are and what technologies meet the code and the advantages/disadvantages of each technology. We know that once participating architects have completed these courses, more consideration will be made earlier in projects.”

For more information on these courses and all other inquiries, please email sales@listentech.com.

Listen Technologies Provides Comprehensive Resources on Updates to California Building Code Requirements

— CBC guidelines for assistive listening go further than the ADA requirements, and Listen Technologies has gathered and clarified the information for contractors/system integrators and their clients in real-world terms —

— Company creates dedicated pages on its website with current information on recent changes to the CBC and Americans with Disabilities Act compliance —

BLUFFDALE, UT, July 29, 2014 — As part of its ongoing efforts to provide venues, contractors and system integrators with the latest resources, Listen Technologies Corporation, a leading designer, manufacturer and distributor of assistive listening products, has gathered and clarified updated information on the California Building Code (CBC). The state of California relies on the CBC to outline the compliance laws for facilities that serve people with hearing disabilities in California – with more specific guidelines than those offered by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The CBC is updated and published every three years, and the most recent revision took effect January 1, 2014. The new guidelines are particularly significant for houses of worship, which are now classified as “assembly areas” by the CBC and are not exempt from the laws for such spaces. In addition, meeting rooms and conference rooms are required to have assistive listening.

“We know that our channel partners and clients are often not aware of changes in compliance and how they affect AV projects,” stated Cory Schaeffer, Listen Technologies VP Business Development Worldwide. “At Listen Technologies we spend a great deal of time and effort to first understand the requirements as they relate to our category of products, then to communicate the changes and guidelines in brief so that they are understood and easy to follow. We hope these resources help the contractors and consultants working in the Golden State to communicate to the venue owners, as the venue owners can be held legally liable. Our approach is to talk about ‘why’ these requirements are in place, explain what is required to become compliant and inform the venue owners of the tax benefits available for becoming compliant. It’s a win-win.”

To access Listen Technologies’ resources regarding the current CBC revisions, please visit http://www.listentech.com/blog/california-building-code-requirements-2014/. General compliance standards outlined by the Americans with Disabilities Act can be found at http://www.listentech.com/legislative-compliance/. “We congratulate Listen Technologies on this award. We are impressed with not only the integrity of their mission but the scope and diversity of their sound solutions,” said Margot Douaihy, editor of AV Technology, EDUwire, & Tech Manager Today. “Our Best in Show judges voted in favor of the Listen Technologies iDSP RF receiver for myriad reasons: its focus on the fine details and nuances that make a great user experience; quality performance; and a surprisingly compact form-factor. Even inventory management and battery management — pain points for most tech managers & venue managers — were considered in the iDSP RF’s final design.”
