Listen Provides Assistive Listening Solution Set for California Companies to Adapt and Adopt to the New 2013 California Building Standards Code

California Companies Get Ready for Updates to Building Standards and Accessibility Codes

California building and accessibility standards are changing and Listen Technologies is providing a solution set for California builders, architects, AV professionals and building owners to adapt and adopt the new standards for the Assistive Listening requirements.

Assistive Listening Systems, which are amplification systems utilizing transmitters, receivers, and coupling devices, are required for all assembly areas, conference rooms and meeting rooms for people with hearing impairments.

Recently, the California Building Standards Commission adopted the 2013 California Building Standards Code, which incorporates proposals by the Division of the State Architect and others to bring California codes in alignment with the federal standards outlined in Title II and Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, which were revised in 2010. The new California Building Standards Code is available online as of July 1, 2013.

“More than 17 percent of the population suffers from some form of hearing loss and California is to be praised for upgrading its state laws to align with the federal ADA standards to ensure that that large portion of society is able to participate in personal, business and cultural events,” said Cory Schaeffer, Co-Founder of Listen Technologies. “Listen Technologies has made it possible for California companies to bring their buildings and spaces up to code for Assistive Listening with a package designed to provide the right technology for the right space.”

The three technologies used for assistive listening are RF (Radio Frequency), IR (Infrared) and IL (Induction or Hearing Loop).

The Listen RF System transmits a clear audio signal over radio frequencies to a personal receiver. The advantage of RF technology is that there are no “line-of-site” issues and the technology can cover a wide area indoors or outdoors.

The Listen IR System uses infrared light to transmit audio to a personal receiver. The advantage of IR technology is that the system is secure—the audio signal will never leave the room, yet the listener will enjoy consistent, pristine audio.

The Listen Hearing Loop System includes an integral wire that installed around a room in a variety of ways creating an induction field that can be picked up by hearing aids equipped with a tele-coil. More than 60 percent of hearing aids and 100 percent of cochlear implants have a tele-coil. Many venues and users alike enjoy this type of an assistive listening system because the signal is directly transmitted to a user’s hearing aid.

“When designing new building, it is important for the architect to design in assistive listening solutions as early as possible into a project,” Schaeffer added. “This makes it easier and more cost-effective to be both socially responsible and compliant with the law from the very beginning of a project.”

The Department of Justice (DOJ) is responsible for enforcing the ADA standards. The DOJ may file lawsuits in federal court to enforce the ADA, and courts may order compensatory damages and back pay to remedy discrimination. The DOJ may also obtain civil penalties under Title III of up to $55,000 for the first violation and $110,000 for any subsequent violation.

Free Hearing Screenings Offered at InfoComm

As part of its commitment to advocacy for hearing loss and hearing loss prevention Listen Technologies will sponsor the House Research Institute’s free hearing screenings at InfoComm.

Bluffdale, Utah, USA — The House Research Institute and Listen Technologies are teaming up to provide free hearing screenings to attendees and exhibitors at the 2013 InfoComm Exposition at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.

The free hearing screenings will be available in the Audio Pavilion, Hall A, Booth #A381 during show hours from Wednesday, June 12 through Friday, June 14, and will be open 30 minutes before the show for the convenience of exhibitors. A certified health technician will conduct the screenings based on regulatory guidelines established by OSHA, and House Research Institute personnel will provide hearing health education, tips and other resources.

The screenings are offered through the House Research Institute’s Sound Partners® hearing loss prevention program with exclusive sponsorship from Listen Technologies, as part of the company’s commitment to advocacy for hearing loss and hearing loss prevention.

Sound Partners raises awareness among audio and music professionals and the listening public about the permanent hearing health risks associated with excessive exposure to sound volumes at or exceeding 85 decibels (dB), and practical protection methods to encourage the lifelong enjoyment of sound.

“We are passionate about our ongoing commitment to build awareness about hearing loss and hearing loss prevention—and as such, we jumped at the opportunity to once again sponsor the House Research Institute to provide free hearing screenings for attendees at this year’s InfoComm,” said Russell Gentner, President of Listen Technologies Corporation. “The number of people with some degree of hearing loss is staggering. In the US alone, 17 percent or 36 million Americans have hearing loss and this number is rising. We are doing our part to bring a voice to those who deserve the opportunity to fully engage in experiences in a work environment, at their houses of worship, , at the theater, at the movies, and in seminars. Hearing loss can be isolating and we want people to know they don’t have to withdraw or settle for poor sound experiences. The free screening gives people in our industry a chance to understand where they are with their hearing and what they can do to protect it from noise-induced hearing loss.”

“Listen Technologies is a strong advocate for legislative compliance for assistive listening, hearing loss awareness and prevention,” said Marilee Potthoff, Director, Community Education & Outreach, House Research Institute. “Through their sponsorship, we are able to offer professional hearing screening services and the Institute’s extensive hearing health and science expertise to thousands of industry professionals whose careers depend on hearing well.”

Listen Level 2 Hearing Loop Training Now Qualifies for InfoComm RU Credits

Upon completion of the one day Integration & Commissioning of Hearing Loops Systems students can receive 4 RU InfoComm Renewal Credits when they pass the final exam.

Listen Technologies is pleased to announce that the popular Level 2 Hearing Loop Training is now accredited through InfoComm and allows students to receive 4 InfoComm CTS RU.

For more than 30 years, InfoComm has administered the Certified Technology Specialist (CTS) program, which is recognized worldwide as the leading AV professional credential. InfoComm offer three types of certification: CTS (General), CTS-D (AV System Design Specialization) and CTS-I (AV System Installation Specialization). InfoComm CTS, CTS-D, and CTS-I renew their credential every three years through continuing education. Each renewal candidate is required to attain 30 renewal units (RUs).

The Level 2 Hearing Loop Training or Integration & Commissioning of Hearing Loop Systems is full day training session designed to take you through the steps required to properly install a loop system. Attendees gain both theory and hands on practical experience of installing, setting up, testing and certifying a hearing loop system.

Listen Technologies partnered with Ampetronic in April 2012 to distribute audio induction loop systems in the America. For 25 years, Ampetronic has been the world leading provider of hearing loops and has set the bar for designing and delivering superior performing systems that meet the IEC 60118-4 standard.

“Our training has greatly benefited from Ampetronic’s expertise,” shared Mike Griffitt, Listen/Ampetronic Hearing Loop Certified Instructor at Listen Technologies. “Response from participants has been very positive and our Integration partners are finding tremendous value in the time they have spent.” Attendees will now have the opportunity to receive 4 RU upon completion of training and after passing the final exam.

Steven Brown, Design & Sales Engineer at Progressive Electronics, Inc. attended the one-day session early in 2013 and noted, “Hearing Loop Training & Certification by Listen Technologies should be considered a mandatory pre-requisite to the design and provision of such systems. These systems are not plug-and-play. Listen has really done their homework and they have developed a compact and comprehensive means of sharing the science.”

Listen Technologies hosts Hearing Loop trainings across the country with prospective dates and locations listed through the end of the year. In addition, companies or individuals can opt to receive personalized on-site training. For full details visit www.listentech.com/loop-training.
