Welcome to SightDeck, where Hollywood’s green screen technology meets corporate and educational applications.

Since 1976, Ultimatte has proven itself a leader in green screen compositing technology designed for television and motion picture applications. Ten years ago, Ultimatte began to develop a similar technology without the green screen for corporate, presentation and educational applications. SightDeck’s goal was simple: deliver green screen-inspired technology to the corporate world, assisting in distance learning, sales pitches and related applications.

To achieve this and create a solid, plug and play package, Ultimatte turned to Gefen for digital signal management solutions that would prove to be extremely reliable in the field.

“We saw nearly unlimited applications because SightDeck works exceedingly well with projected images and we already had the masking technologies of green screens,” says Lynne Sauve, president, Ultimatte. “We knew that to be successful, SightDeck had to be easy to implement, and we envisioned an absolutely plug and play system with a little help from Gefen.”

SightDeck creates a mask of the presenter(s) in real time and enables complete interactivity with background graphics, created beforehand. SightDeck is essentially a hardware system, including a screen, camera, projector and server card backed by Gefen signal management hardware to enable seamless connectivity.

When two or more SightDecks are combined you can double your imagery with two simultaneous outputs. So your colleague in Ohio can present in real-time right alongside you. Presenters can see each other and reference each other. In this way, SightDeck enables the creation of panel discussions with people located all over the world, looking as if they are all in the same room.

SightDeck’s high definition camera supports two images: the masked presenter(s) and the projected graphics. It will work with most projectors with a less than 3 frame delay and minimal thermal drift. It supports touch screen technology so presenters are able to manipulate and interact with projected content and other presenter’s movements in a seamless fashion.

“You really have to see this in action to believe it,” says Sauve. “After ten years of intensive development, we perfected the essence of green screen for the corporate world. It’s basically a kind of virtual reality that can encourage and support live interactions between people located all over the world. It really takes presentations to the next level.”

With touch screen technology applied to the projected background, presenters can control, edit, change or add to content being projected. “Anything you can control on the PC, you can control on the touch screen behind you,” explained Sauve. All content can be simultaneously output in high definition format, streamed live and recorded with a first generation quality output.

Editing tools on the GUI can appear projected on the background image or hidden from everyone but the presenter. Everything is user controlled. A video conferencing codex is built into the system so someone can dial-in and be heard as well as seen by the presenter or everyone participating. The system is totally interactive and contains multilayered transparencies to bring people into the picture, visually dissect issues, collaborate and problem solve.

Content is output as 720p/60 HDSDI and SightDeck includes two Gefen Scalers to support the 720p output. “The Gefen Scalers are highly reliable and work intuitively behind the scenes. They really help make the system plug and play; nobody has to play around with video resolutions.”

Gefen’s USB Extender is also included for remote touch screen applications. “Gefen is an integral part of the SightDeck solution,” adds Sauve.

Value-Added Features for Discovering, Configuring, Monitoring, Updating and Managing Gefen Products Now Available in One Convenient Solution

CHATSWORTH, CA – Digital connectivity solutions provider Gefen today announced the availability of Gefen Syner-G™ software suite, a signal management solution providing powerful add-on features. This new foray into the software side of signal management is a first for Gefen, and is indicative of its belief that the future will be IP connected products.

The new Gefen Syner-G™ suite has all the capability to discover, control, monitor, manage and upgrade Gefen products over a local IP infrastructure and through direct connections using USB. Included are advanced EDID management tools, IP product management, an automated firmware update engine and remote product configuration options.

With the Manage feature, Gefen’s powerful EDID tools control what EDID is presented to equipment connected to select Gefen products. The EDID stored in Gefen devices can be remotely manipulated and users can build their own EDIDs from scratch using the EDID Generator, as well as upload/download unique EDIDs, store them for later use and modify any EDID in the program for unique installation scenarios.

“Many failed attempts to get the best picture, or any picture, on a display are often the result of EDID issues,” said Orrin Charm, Gefen’s product manager. “Even beyond the picture, proper EDID settings are critical to getting desired audio outputs, as EDID affects audio settings as well. This new tool solves all these EDID related issues.”

The Configuration aspect of Gefen Syner-G™ suite gives convenient access to settings on Gefen hardware that does not already incorporate a web GUI, allowing product settings to be changed on the fly.

The Discovery tool lists all connected Gefen equipment on an IP network, enabling a simple way to view and control select Gefen hardware from anywhere on the network. This makes adding new Gefen products to an existing network very easy. In the past, integrators needed both familiarity with and access to network administration settings in order to add new devices to a network. Generally, it required changing network configuration settings on connected PCs in order to access the device, remember and then return settings to their original values afterwards—a challenging task for inexperienced network professionals. Plus, if multiple devices were added to a network with overlapping IP addresses, it was basically impossible to access any of them. With the Discovery tool, integrators can connect new Gefen devices directly to the network, as well as access, configure and change IP settings, all from a PC, laptop or smartphone.

Updating Gefen equipment is also extremely easy and seamless. When the Update feature is activated, current firmware updates can be immediately downloaded and installed.

“The Gefen Syner-G™ suite combines the world’s best EDID manager with tools for IP discovery, software configuration and firmware updates into a single seamless package, bringing a new standard in video management to the AV and IT professional,” added Charm.

Award-Winning Gefen Solution Distributes HDMI with USB, RS-232, IR and Audio over a Local Area Network with Option to Create Virtual Matrix Switching Solution

CHATSWORTH, CA – Digital connectivity solutions provider Gefen today announced that its HD KVM over IP solution won the AV Technology Best of Show Award at InfoComm 2014.

Gefen’s HD KVM over IP sends 1080p high definition content over a LAN with the option to integrate various video formats and create a virtual, cross-point matrix. The sender/receiver system allows the remote control of computers from any workstation on the LAN when using a Gigabit Ethernet switch. Users access content using a keyboard, video display and mouse (KVM). Video resolutions in the HDMI format up to 1080p, four USB peripherals, bi-directional audio, RS-232 control signals and IR are transported on the LAN with optional extension up to 100 meters on both sender and receiver sides using a single CAT-5 cable. This extension system boasts latency of less than two frames.

One of the best features of this new solution is its ability to support additional sender and receiver units on the same LAN. Each sender and receiver can be automatically or manually configured to a unique IP address to support multiple units. Up to 256 sender and a theoretical limit of just over 65,000 units total can be routed through the LAN, creating a scalable, virtual cross-point matrix with no additional wiring. The HD KVM over IP can also be combined on the same LAN with Gefen’s DVI and VGA KVM over IP extenders. These integrated systems support both analog and digital video in a virtual matrix that sends data to any workstation regardless of the video format. Resolutions are supported up to 1920×1200 at 60 FPS.

Gefen’s HD KVM over IP helps facilities improve performance by increasing remote control options and streamlining equipment. Each system includes a web server interface for easy configuration and setup. Each receiver unit comes equipped with an Ethernet switch and two Ethernet ports for connecting additional computers at the remote location.

The Best of Show designation is awarded to those companies with outstanding products exhibited at InfoComm. Winners were selected by panels of professional users and editors, and on judges’ inspection at the convention.

Gefen Wins Three Awards

Wireless HD Extension

The GefenTV Wireless for HD 60GHz extender took home the Electronic House Product of the Year award at CES 2014. Selected by a panel of distinguished industry leaders along with the editors of Electronic House and CE Pro, this new solution joins an exclusive group of products deemed the most noteworthy at CES. The Wireless for HD 60GHz extender transmits uncompressed 1080p full HD content up to 33 feet (10 meters) supporting 3DTV and all audio formats including High Bit Rate (HBR) 7.1 channel Dolby True-HD and DTS-HD Master Audio. It uses wireless technology based on the 60 GHz EHF (Extremely High Frequency) radio band. This method of extension eliminates the need to run cables, making it a great solution for retrofits or any environment that wants to streamline cabling. Because data is transported wirelessly, this solution is ideal for use in hotels, cruise ships, conference centers, historical buildings and anywhere it is challenging to run long-range cables.

High Resolution Signal Extension

Gefen was recognized for its part in the implementation of Reality Deck at Stoney Brook University at the Digital Signage Expo 2014. The Silver Apex Award was received by Gefen at the opening-night banquet in Las Vegas. This winning project was chosen from a field of more than 100 entrants. All projects were individually assessed on the basis of originality and innovation by three independent panels, all of whom have long reported on the digital signage sector and are recognized as versant in current industry trends.

Reality Deck is a permanent installation in the Center for Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology in Stony Brook University’s Research & Development Park. It the first 1.5 billion pixel surround installation of high resolution LCD displays with real-world immersive capabilities. After a decade of planning, Reality Deck tiled more than 400 displays along four walls so anyone standing in the room has a very realistic view of large-scale, scientific, computerized data. To transport data from the machine room to the Reality Deck, the team selected an assortment of Gefen DisplayPort Extreme Fiber Optic extenders in 75 and 100 foot distances. Displays had to support very high video resolutions of 2560×1440 to ensure an absolutely pristine transmission of video with no degradation.

System Integration

Gefen’s 32×32 Modular Matrix for HDMI took home an award from NewBay Media’s first annual Product Innovation Awards. Honoring product introductions that serve TV, professional video and broadcast/online radio users, Gefen’s 32×32 Modular Matrix was recognized in the Video/TV category for excellence in manufacturing. Winners were selected by a panel of professional users.

This solution routes up to 32 sources to 32 displays in any configuration. Optional extension over CAT-5 cable via 8x output boards using HDBaseT adds flexibility to the customization of the infrastructure. Displays can be located anywhere within a 330 foot (100 meter) distance of the matrix frame. Users can tailor their outputs to enable displays in increments of eight to be connected locally or extended using modular output boards. Gefen’s POL (Power Over Line) technology eliminates the need to power the receiver units, which obtain their power from the matrix. Gefen FST (Fast Switching Technology) is included, improving the HDCP authentication process and reducing switching time to nearly zero. EDID management settings are included to ensure a stable connection even when powering on/off individual displays and/or sources. Dual, redundant power supplies offer added security for a reliable performance.

announced the availability of its new DVI KVM over IP extender with
local DVI output. This new product facilitates remote access to
servers from workstations placed up to 660 feet (200m) away over an
existing Local Area Network. It supports high resolution digital video
in the DVI format, four USB ports for connecting keyboard, mouse and
other peripherals, analog audio from server to workstation and RS-232
extension over the LAN. Each sender and receiver can be connected
directly or through a Gigabit network switch using a single CAT-5
cable. Each cable run can be up to 100 meters.

((Ideal for demanding applications in hospitality, retail,
post-production, broadcast, telecommunications and mission-critical
control centers, Gefen’s DVI KVM over IP can help improve the
efficiency of data access, increase productivity and streamline

Gefen’s New 4×1 Switcher for HDMI Delivers Resolutions up to 4k Supporting the Newest Ultra HD Displays

Digital connectivity solutions provider Gefen today announced that its 4×1 Switcher for HDMI 4k/2k is available to order, with shipments beginning in October 2013. This new switcher connects four high definition sources using HDMI to one display. HDMI 2.0 support is included for this and all Gefen Ultra HD products supporting 4k 60Hz resolutions with 3D pass-through. The inclusion of Gefen FST (Fast Switching Technology) virtually eliminates signal latency, providing an instant switch of audio/video content.

New Jersey Sign Shop Enlivens Street Scene with Digital Flames using the Gefen Digital Signage Creator

Retail signage for the newest Blazing Visuals Sign Shop transformed itself into a blazing inferno that invigorates the street thanks to an innovative istallation using Gefen’s Digital Signage Creator.

True to its name, Blazing Visuals took the standard retail signage for its Point Pleasant, NJ store and made it smoking hot. This creative, full service sign company handles all aspects of sign making from creative content development through to production and publishing. For its own custom signage, the owner, Pete DiSpirito, wanted to up the “wow” factor and remain true to his company’s mission. This is where local integrator Scott Craig entered the picture and pitched the Digital Signage Creator as the ultimate tool for creating the kind of special effects desired.

According to Craig, “I wanted to draw attention to their newest location and store front windows while keeping budget and time constraints at the forefront of our plans.”

One of the biggest challenges in creating the flaming signage was the simple task of projecting a visible image onto the glass windows of the location.

“We did our own research and used some 3M graphics film to help facilitate the kind of visuals we wanted that would expand on the company’s Blazing Visuals logo.”

Gefen’s Digital Signage Creator manages content with its bundled Digital Signage Director software, which works on with any Windows OS-based browser. It is an intuitive, layer-based layout program
offering the ability to insert music, layer still and video images, write scripts to control content and pull RSS feeds off the Internet. These advanced features give users full control over their content creation, yielding visually stunning digital signage results. Users can schedule content to play at any time using the iCal application. Content can be pushed to the Digital Signage Creator for an immediate update of the on-board memory or pulled automatically from a remote server. GefenTV Wireless HD Extender 60Ghz

This next generation extender passes through uncompressed 3DTV 1080p HDMI video up to 33-feet (10m) in distance. Because it has MHL compatibility, it can support the connection of any mobile device that supports HDMI and will conveniently charge the device while it is connected. This new model is easy to install, providing a plug and play setup that anyone with even a little technology savvy should be able to handle.

GefenTV High Resolution USB to Audio Decoder

Output high fidelity audio from the USB port on any computer, tablet or laptop with the new USB to Audio Decoder. Audio is decoded and scaled at a 192k sampling rate, ideal for anyone who wants high quality sound without the static and noise that you typically hear when decoding different audio formats. The Decoder also includes a digital interpolation filter and digital to analog (DAC) converter to enhance its performance.

GefenPRO Matrix Switchers for HDMI w/HDCP

The GefenPRO 16×16 and the 32×32 Modular Matrixes for HDMI w/HDCP offer cross-point routing of one or more sources to one or all connected displays with HDCP compliance. Both include Gefen’s FST (Fast Switching Technology) to significantly improve the HDCP authentication process and minimize latency. The modular nature allows a customization of to include eight HDMI outputs or eight ELR (Extra Long Range) outputs that use HDBaseT to deliver HDMI with IR up to 330 feet (100m) using a single CAT-5 cable per display.

GAVA (Gefen A/V Automation) 3.0

Additional new features include Sonos integration, so integrators will be able to add audio zones by adding a wireless Sonos “Zone Player” wherever needed. New “Event Engine” and expanded Macro capability allows more customization and automation. Integrators can add an “event trigger” to use a Lutron keypad, switch or dimmer to run an A/V macro, and create two-way integration between lighting and A/V systems. IP camera and thermostat integration will also be shown for the first time. Integration with BlueBolt Power Management devices means GAVA can reduce idle system power consumption to only a few watts, rather than hundreds of watts consumed by traditional integrated systems in standby mode. GAVA now supports Lutron’s GRAFIK Eye QS with the QSE Interface, as well as HomeWorks QS and RadioRA2 systems. GAVA can also be used to bridge Lutron and KNX lighting systems, for greater flexibility in mixed environments.

Ultra HD 4k Systems

A selection of Ultra HD splitters, switchers and matrix switchers offer support for resolutions up to 4k and can be easily integrated into a system supporting both 1080p and 3840p resolutions. Gefen ToolBox Splitters are ideal for sending one 4k source to two, four or eight displays at the same time. HDCP compliance, 3DTV pass-through and Gefen Fast Switching Technology (FST) are included to stabilize the signal distribution. The 1:2, 1:4 and 1:8 Splitters for HDMI 4k/2k are all enclosed in a wall mountable frame that can be mounted near the source or behind the connected displays. The Gefen ToolBox 4×1 Switcher for HDMI 4k/2k allows four sources to be connected to the same 4k display with source selection controlled by IR remote, IP connectivity, RS-232 or front panel selection. The Gefen ToolBox 6×2 Matrix Switcher for HDMI 4k/2k connects up to six sources to two independent 4k displays with full cross-point routing. The Gefen ToolBox 4×4 Matrix Switcher for HDMI 4k/2k connects four sources to four 4k displays with full cross-point routing.

ePACS (Extended Professional Automation Control System) and Mini-ePACS

These IP bridge devices enable A/V and other components using RS-232 and IR to be controlled by and to communicate with GAVA or other automation systems using IP control. The new models now feature sense inputs to allow external control from switches or contacts, and IR inputs which will allow control from IR remote controls. Each uses a web-based, user-friendly configuration interface. The ePACS is equipped with 10 IR inputs, 10 IR outputs, 6 RS-232 serial ports, 10 sense inputs, 10 relay outputs and a 12v DC output. The Mini-ePACS is equipped with 2 IR inputs, 3 IR outputs, 2 RS-232 serial ports, 4 sense inputs and 2 relay outputs.
