New Jersey Sign Shop Enlivens Street Scene with Digital Flames using the Gefen Digital Signage Creator

Retail signage for the newest Blazing Visuals Sign Shop transformed itself into a blazing inferno that invigorates the street thanks to an innovative istallation using Gefen’s Digital Signage Creator.

True to its name, Blazing Visuals took the standard retail signage for its Point Pleasant, NJ store and made it smoking hot. This creative, full service sign company handles all aspects of sign making from creative content development through to production and publishing. For its own custom signage, the owner, Pete DiSpirito, wanted to up the “wow” factor and remain true to his company’s mission. This is where local integrator Scott Craig entered the picture and pitched the Digital Signage Creator as the ultimate tool for creating the kind of special effects desired.

According to Craig, “I wanted to draw attention to their newest location and store front windows while keeping budget and time constraints at the forefront of our plans.”

One of the biggest challenges in creating the flaming signage was the simple task of projecting a visible image onto the glass windows of the location.

“We did our own research and used some 3M graphics film to help facilitate the kind of visuals we wanted that would expand on the company’s Blazing Visuals logo.”

Gefen’s Digital Signage Creator manages content with its bundled Digital Signage Director software, which works on with any Windows OS-based browser. It is an intuitive, layer-based layout program
offering the ability to insert music, layer still and video images, write scripts to control content and pull RSS feeds off the Internet. These advanced features give users full control over their content creation, yielding visually stunning digital signage results. Users can schedule content to play at any time using the iCal application. Content can be pushed to the Digital Signage Creator for an immediate update of the on-board memory or pulled automatically from a remote server. High definition resolutions are supported up to 720p at 60 frames and 1080p at 24 frames in both landscape and portrait alignments.

“I am a big fan of Gefen and the unprecedented level of outstanding support Gefen provides their customers. Great customer service is difficult to come by from a manufacturer of Gefen’s caliber these
days. When you find a company that supports you like Gefen does, you turn to them any time possible,” explained Craig.

The successful installation has driven more traffic to the store front as well as creating a lot of local buzz. The additional traffic has inspired Blazing Visuals to consider expanding their digital signage.

“It is likely they’ll implement store-front window signage at other company locations, and I’m looking forward to using the video wall options of the Gefen Digital Signage Creator,” added Craig.

Gefen Unveils New GAVA 3.0 Firmware Upgrade, Offering Advanced Automation Features for Conference Room and Commercial Applications Featuring Lutron Lighting Systems

The next generation GAVA (Gefen A/V Automation) 3.0 firmware will be shown for the first time at InfoComm, delivering more features that further simplify and enhance the automation of A/V devices and lighting in conference rooms, meeting spaces and training rooms. GAVA centralizes the control of all connected devices into a web-based interface that can be accessed at anytime using a smartphone, tablet or computer.

As part of the new Conference Room Package, GAVA uses an existing LAN, allowing an easy integration of both mobile and traditional A/V devices connected to the network. The package includes the award-winning GAVA, Gefen’s Professional Automation Control System (PACS), Gefen’s 4×1 AV Processor with Amp, the AV Scaler Pro, and two GefenTV Conference Room Speakers. With the inclusion of the Lutron GRAFIK® Eye QSE, this package allows customizable and repeatable lighting scenarios, all automated by the integrator. In the EMEA, the package includes an 8-channel DALI-interface Grafik Eye QS. In the US, the package includes a Grafik Eye QS with 6-channels of phase-control dimmers. The QSE Interface allows Ethernet or RS-232 control of the Grafik Eye QS without requiring Lutron RadioRA2 or HomeWorks certification or software.

“One of the best features of this new free firmware upgrade is the addition of ‘event triggers’ that truly automate all aspects of the Conference Room Package,” said Orrin Charm, Automation Project Manager, Gefen. “These triggers happen behind the scenes and are totally customizable. For instance, you can program a ‘Watch Video’ trigger that, when you push the ‘Watch Video’ button on a mobile device, an in-wall Lutron RadioRA2 or a HomeWorks keypad, you immediately dim the lights, turn on the display, the entire A/V system, and lower the screen and window shades, providing you with a “one-touch” operation.”

Integrators also have the option to allow or restrict user access to the GAVA setup Wizard. Other new features include better organization of macros, assignment of macros to other GAVA buttons, and the ability to send IP or RS-232 strings from a macro without needing a Device Driver, UDP support and more.

“Another value-added feature is the new password-protection option in GAVA,” said Charm. “Now you can create multiple secure views for different users. For example, you could design a password-protected view of a suite of conference rooms that only authorized users can access, and then you could design a simpler view of each room that all your employees can access. It opens up a lot more possibilities for both the integrator and the end user.”

The new GAVA Conference Room Package connects all A/V components using IP, IR or RS-232. GAVA provides the unifying GUI interface using an integrated HTML5 Web server and Linux processor, allowing any mobile device access to everything connected in the package. PACS is a bridge product that connects legacy devices using IR and RS-232 into the system. The 4×1 AV Processor provides additional HDMI inputs with quality audio decoding. Audio from the HDMI, coaxial, optical or stereo inputs is decoded by a 5.1 channel Dolby® Digital and Dolby® ProLogic II Surround processor. Audio can be amplified using built-in 50 watts per channel amplification or by connecting an external amplifier. When a discrete digital or analog audio input is selected, the video continues to output 1080p full HD, allowing you to watch video from the source while listening to a different audio selection. The AV Scaler Pro allows you to incorporate legacy (VGA, DVI, component and HDMI) devices with upscaling while the GefenTV speakers output nice, high quality sound.

Automation for lighting and window shades is fully supported using the Lutron GRAFIK Eye QS, which allows for complete customization of lights and shades via RS-232 or the Ethernet. The Lutron GRAFIK Eye QS is energy-efficient and can control of up to six or eight zones of lighting. LED, fluorescent and halogen lights are all supported as well as fixtures that are Lutron EcoSystem® compatible.

All components of the GAVA Conference Room Package are controllable using any web browser, or with free updated GAVA iOS or Android 4.2 Apps, providing better system management, and a free demo mode for potential customers to see first-hand how GAVA works.

New Daisy Chain System from Gefen Extends 100 Displays by Daisy Chaining from one Display to the Next using Video over IP Technology

Digital connectivity solutions provider Gefen today announced the availability of its new Daisy Chain HD System, which creates a large infrastructure for wiring displays using CAT-5 cable. The system includes sender, splitter and receiver units—all interconnected in a daisy chain concept. All three units work together to extend 1080p full HD with RS-232 and IR control signals using the same CAT-5 cable.

Similar to a tree scenario, the system uses splitters to create new “branches.” Users can create up to ten branches each supporting ten displays. Individual displays can be mounted next to each other or up to 100 meters apart. Source video is sent to the sender then over a single CAT-5 cable to the splitter. The splitter outputs two signals: one that connects to a receiver and display; and another that connects to another splitter. Each splitter also provides one HDMI output for a local display connection. Alternatively, the Daisy Chain HD System can create a straight daisy chain to 30 displays from one splitter to the next splitter.

This new system works with all hi-def displays and video sources using HDMI supporting Blu-ray players, satellite set-top boxes and tablets. IR and RS-232 controls key features of the display, including powering displays on and off and switching source inputs.

“This is an evolutionary new daisy chain concept for many commercial applications, particularly digital signage-type video walls,” said Hagai Gefen, president, Gefen. “This solution uses Video over IP technology to route hi-def video to 100 displays and is a great fit for any commercial applications that use multiple displays such as airport terminals.”
