Bexel Launches 4K Solution with Evertz Dreamcatcher

Purchase Adds Cutting-Edge Slow-Motion Replay Technology for Sports and Live Broadcasts

(BURBANK, CA) – Bexel, a unit of the Vitec Group‘s Services Division and a leading worldwide provider of broadcast services and solutions, has purchased two Dreamcatcher systems from Evertz, a leading global manufacturer of broadcast equipment. The acquisition serves as a cornerstone for Bexel’s new 4K solutions, which provide turnkey packages that will be available to augment any major sporting event or live production broadcast.

Dreamcatcher represents the next generation in slow-motion replay technology and offers real-world 4K benefits. The product provides enhanced storytelling capabilities by allowing a production team to capture an event from all angles, without ever missing a moment of action. When 4K cameras are used, Dreamcatcher’s zoom capability lets broadcasters zero in on the action and extract an HD image from a larger 4K frame. This high resolution zoom ability allows broadcasters to enhance the narrative and definitive coverage of close calls at sporting events. When used in conjunction with Evertz’ patent-pending tracking feature, the 4K zoom functionality enables a totally unique replay experience. Dreamcatcher’s proprietary Mosaic function synchronizes multiple angles that can be played out with the press of a single button, allowing a captured event to be shown from brand new perspectives.

Tom Dickinson, CTO of Bexel, comments, “Bexel is a leader in building server systems for a myriad of sporting events, and the addition of Dreamcatcher is a natural expansion of our offerings – and it’s ready for 4K now. Dreamcatcher will be available to our customers as part of a customized solution that will deliver an elegant, streamlined 4K package that can be integrated into a sports production easily, and play a key role in providing 4K replay for live events. Dreamcatcher is a great storytelling tool that employs state-of-the-art technology to allow broadcasters to use 4K to its fullest extent on an HD production.”

Evertz’ Joe Cirincione, VP Sales-U.S. Sports and Entertainment, who has been on over a dozen shoots including the Super Bowl and Daytona 500, says, “Dreamcatcher allows an audience to experience an event like never before, and we know that it will make a perfect addition to Bexel’s offerings. We have enjoyed a long and successful relationship with Bexel, and we are very pleased they have chosen Dreamcatcher.”

“We engage many Evertz products in our systems and solutions,” concludes Dickinson. “This is a logical expansion for Bexel and the Dreamcatcher’s features augment the sports experience in exciting new ways, and for live content replay and multi-screen output for award shows as well as other live events. We’re thrilled to add this to our fleet of solutions.”

Bexel’s Extensive Fiber Optic Infrastructure Supports the Oscars(r)

Celebrating 12-Year Partnership in Evolving Fiber Network, Bexel Transports High Volume of Communications Signals from the Heart of Hollywood

(HOLLYWOOD, CA) Bexel, a unit of the Vitec Group‘s Services Division and a leading worldwide provider of broadcast services and solutions, recently celebrated its 12th year supporting the global live broadcast of the Academy Awards(r) with its largest effort to-date – connecting every major component of the 2013 show’s broadcast together at the Dolby Theatre. Working with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, including Engineer in Charge Tad Scripter and Hollywood & Highland management company CIM, Bexel implemented a comprehensive fiber optic network connecting key production locations such as Hollywood & Highland, Dolby Theatre, Loews Hotel and the domestic and international television compounds behind the El Capitan Theater on Hollywood Blvd.

“With all the complexities involved in a live program, Bexel did a great job with no malfunctions!” said Michael B. Seligman, supervising producer of the 85th Academy Awards(r).

For the Oscars, Bexel deployed more than 17 miles of temporary fiber. This is in addition to the four miles of permanent multi-strand fiber optic cables utilized to successfully transport HD/SD video, audio, data and communications signals for live simultaneous broadcasts of the Red Carpet pre-shows, the Oscar ceremony, backstage press interview and photo rooms and the Governors Ball, the Academy’s official celebration following the Oscars.

“The technical complexity of this project in connecting so many different elements of the show has continued to grow since we first installed the permanent fiber network into the Hollywood & Highland and Dolby Theatre complex back in 2001,” said Bexel’s Craig Schiller, vice president of engineering and operations. “We continue to enhance the fiber optic network, as it is the backbone that allows us to make point-to-point connections and the reason we are able to service all of our customers so effectively.”

In order to pull off a live event of this magnitude, Bexel’s credentialed staff of more than 40 skilled fiber engineers and support technicians were onsite for 15 days. The team enabled the transport of 275 video signals, 180 audio signals and 150 intercom signals over fiber for the Academy’s domestic and international broadcast partners.

Still photographers were provided with 40 fiber connections from the Red Carpet, Orchid Court and the Dolby Theatre. They were also equipped with sufficient bandwidth to connect to their workrooms in the Loews Hotel, enabling immediate delivery of still images to media and photographic services worldwide.

In addition, Bexel once again deployed its RF-Over-Fiber antenna system to enable all of the exciting action during the official Red Carpet pre-show. Bexel’s RF-Over-Fiber system provided unprecedented wireless communications coverage not previously available with a conventional wireless system. Bexel’s RF base camp was located at the 90-degree turn of the Red Carpet, and was used as the head-end position. Four small RF fiber-site boxes were established along the Red Carpet and enabled connection for up to six antennas to ensure there was no loss of signal and that none of the evening’s star-studded arrivals were missed.

“Oscar(r) weekend is without a doubt the most fiber-intensive event we do and the fact that it continues to flourish and continues to be such a success is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the professionals at Bexel,” added Schiller.

The 86th Academy Awards will take place on March 2, 2014.

Ciphertex Debuts Portable, Secure NAS Server at NAB

NAB Booth SL12510

CX-6K-AV 24TB Designed to Meet Needs of Entertainment-Media Industry

(LOS ANGELES,CA) Ciphertex, the global provider of unique hardware-encrypted storage products, will unveil the CX-6K-AV at the NAB Show in Las Vegas, April 8-11. This new 24TB portable, highly secure NAS server is ideal for backup, disaster recovery and business continuity, file sharing and virtualization, will be showcased at booth #SL12510, along with the company's full line of encrypted digital storage solutions.

"The Ciphertex CX-6K-AV is a compact, lightweight, high-performance server designed for directors, producers, postproduction and archival facilities that need a secure, portable NAS server," says Jerry Kaner, CEO and founder of Los Angeles-based Ciphertex. "More than any other market, media and entertainment demands performance. What is unique about the CX-6K-AV is that our AES 256-bit encryption engine provides the high level of security with no loss of performance. The combination of portability, encryption and high performance are a first in a server for this market."

Ciphertex comes to the media and entertainment space with an uncommon level of experience. The company is the leading provider of secure, portable data storage systems using advanced hardware encryption for the forensics, oil and gas, government and healthcare market. The work in which they are engaged for those sectors demands an incomparable level and depth of security. For the entertainment industry, a natural outgrowth of their historical competencies, Ciphertex has been successfully collaborating with Universal, Sony, Warner Bros. and HBO.

Kaner notes that the Motion Picture Association of America statistics point to piracy costs in the U.S. of $58 billion annually, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce says that such piracy threatens 19 million American jobs. As digital picture capture dramatically increases across all production, secure digital storage of assets is a primary concern for on-set and near-set digital dailies and postproduction.

The Ciphertex CX-6K-AV server offers lightning fast transfer of video dailies, high bit-rate audio files, 3D renderings and other high-resolution content. It serves as both IP-SAN (iSCSI) and NAS, offering advanced RAID configuration with hot-swap capability. The cost-effective server can store HD video footage and transmit fully encrypted data using AES 256-bt encryption at an incredibly fast 1,000 MB/s over a 10 GbE network.

Ideal for the production ecosystem, the new NAS server is packed with security features to stop all unauthorized data access and prevent data breach even if the hard drives or the device is stolen. The dual OS embedded on the DOM architecture ensure redundancy. If one of the two operating systems fails, the other will boot up and operate normally while repairing the failed system. The dual Gb LAN ports can also be configured for failover, which allows the Ciphertex CX-6K-AV to sustain the failure of one network port and still provide continuous service.

The CX-6K-AV is VMware certified, Citrix XenServer ready, and Windows Hyper-V compliant. With an advanced Intel Core i3-3220, dual-core processor with 3.3 GHz, 2 GB DDR3 memory, it enables fast data transfers directly to any workstation via its 1GbE or 10 GbE interface and connects to external devices over eSATA or USB-3. The server easily accommodates three streams of 1080p24 at 16-bit RGB, three streams of 2K x 1,556p24 at 16-bit RGB or one stream of 4Kp24 (RED) at 10-bit RGB.

"Multiple users, such as teams of editors in different locations, can aggregate two units and have access to the same files for postproduction efficiency, business continuity and asset protection," says Kaner. "Data transfer to 4TB USB-3 also ensures fast movement of assets from location to location."

The Ciphertex CX-6K-AV's small footprint makes it quick and easy to set up and dismantle networks wherever they are required. The portable NAS server units are available with an air-tight, water-tight and shatter-resistant field kit to ensure reliability in all environments.

The CX-6K-AV is expandable with Ciphertex's 20TB CX-Ranger RAID for a total capacity of 44TB of algorithm-encrypted storage. Additional CX-6K-AV units can also be networked together.

For under $5,000 the Ciphertex CX-6K-AV server is expected to ship in late spring 2013.

About Ciphertex
Ciphertex was launched in 2011 and differentiates itself from the rest of the storage industry by securing data with real-time AES-256 encryption/decryption implemented in hardware in an ergonomically- designed, portable direct attached storage system and in software in powerful NAS systems. Ciphertex offers a full line of encrypted digital storage solutions ranging from a 1TB pocket drive to 48TB expandable, rack-mounted network servers.
