Boxx Communications Showcasing Meridian at SMPTE

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 18, 2012—Boxx Communications will bring Boxx TV’s latest technologies to the SMPTE 2012 Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition next week in Hollywood. Boxx Communications (Booth #416) will be showing the Meridian product line, as well as giving conference goers a sneak peak at the prototype h.264 HD system that is covering a distance of three miles. SMPTE 2012, considered the premier annual event for motion-imaging professionals in the media, entertainment, communications and technology industries, will be held at the Loews Hollywood Hotel (formerly the Renaissance Hollywood) from October 23-25. The Boxx TV Meridian is used on a wide variety of projects including the upcoming James Bond film Skyfall; episodic television shows like Revenge, Body of Proof and the Emmy® Award-winning Modern Family; and on breaking news stories on stations such KABC, KNBC and KTLA.

“Boxx TV is thoroughly focused on evolving and innovating our product line,” notes Boxx Communications Founder Mark Walker. “We are constantly in the field, working events in venues, on sets, and in broadcast trucks and control rooms. We derive significant understanding from that kind of real-world, hands-on experience. We get it, and understand what our customers have to accomplish, and that drives us to continually improve our products. What Boxx TV offers is an incredible option for the industry in terms of functionality and affordability.”

For those situations that demand high-quality, zero-delay HD and SD live transmission, Boxx TV’s Meridian Wireless Microwave Broadcast System is an affordable alternative to traditional COFDM systems with unprecedented success. The Meridian system uses license-exempt channels, and offers secure encrypted transmissions. It can be used for a variety of applications including large screen presentations, award ceremonies, and live broadcast events.

Boxx Meridian supports full 4:2:2 video including all formats up to 1080/30p, and delivers uncompressed, artifact-free broadcast video with in sync sound to integrate seamlessly with coax cameras switched live.

SMPTE 2012 attendees will also get a look at the recently released Meridian Tallis, an iris control and tally indicator accessory for two cameras. The Tallis provides tally and iris only control, and complements any brand of broadcast camera. The product is small enough to mount on any camera and the control knob gives accurate iris control. For a price around $4,000.00 for two channels controlling two cameras, the Tallis opens up a solution for productions where only iris control and tally indication is sufficient.

Sohonet Puts Lantana Campus in Fast Lane for Connectivity

Turnkey Production Platform Combines Creative Workspace with High-Performance Data Services

(SANTA MONICA, CA) Lantana, one of Los Angeles’ most prestigious properties for leasing creative office space, has joined forces with Sohonet, the global expert in connectivity and data management, to create an infrastructure that supports the professional content creation community. Lantana chose Sohonet to retrofit their Santa Monica campus, giving tenants easy access to networking solutions that are customizable to their creative needs. The campus-wide implementation has now been completed, positioning Lantana as a unique real estate hub for feature film and television production companies.

The expansion creates an ideal environment for clients who work around the clock and have dynamic needs. Lantana and Sohonet have designed a scenario where a full range of highly secure connectivity solutions can be initiated within just an hour, or even in minutes, and services can be scaled up and down throughout the duration of a project.

Harrison Marks, Visual Effects Coordinator for The Bourne Legacy and a number of high-profile studio projects, moved operations on the feature film from New York to Los Angeles in the thick of the project’s demanding schedule. Marks notes, “Sohonet kept us up and running in the midst of everything, and there was a lot going on. The availability of production-ready, creative workspace at Lantana powered by Sohonet is amazing for projects like The Bourne Legacy. I believe that during the entire transition, we were down less than one hour. Their support helped us keep our editors and production humming continuously, and deliver on schedule.”

Lantana is home to a number of media companies, and their security and bandwidth demands are increasing exponentially. Rebecca Hamilton, General Manager of Lantana, says, “Lantana’s clients are working with some of the world’s most valuable and sensitive content, moving bigger and bigger files farther and faster. Our clients face complex working requirements that call for tightly integrating data services with creative workspace into a turnkey production services offering. We knew that we needed an easy and secure way for them to keep them functioning on many levels, and a long-term solution for our campus.”

From internet services through high-volume data transfer services across its private media network, Sohonet supports the entire range of worldwide networking needs at Lantana. “Working with Lantana, we were able to put a turnkey solution in place that’s flexible and matches production needs and timescales,” explains Sohonet’s Joseph Ramsey, VP of Sales and Marketing for North America. “Our services are built around the demands of media clients, which gave Lantana the infrastructure they needed so creative teams can work without restrictions.”

The upgrade was significant in terms of planning and execution. “Sohonet is simply the best at what they do,” adds Hamilton. “They understand the way that our tenants work and they carefully managed every step of the implementation. I could not have asked for a smoother or more successful outcome.”

Dave Scammell, Sohonet’s CEO, says, “We are delighted to have been part of this collaboration with Lantana. We both have a deep understanding of the demands of this industry, and worked to optimize this location for their needs and their clients’ needs, effectively providing the best technology and expertise available to them.”

The Lantana media campus is comprised of four, distinct buildings on 12 acres, offering over 200,000 square feet of space. As part of the building modernization process, Sohonet successfully transitioned over 40 tenants, with unlimited capacity for adding long- and short-term clientele.

Digital Vision and MTI Film form Strategic Partnership to Create Grading and Control Dailies Workflow

(Los Angeles, CA) Digital Vision and MTI Film have formed a strategic technology partnership to develop a new digital dailies software solution, built upon Digital Vision’s Nucoda colour grading system and the MTI’s Cortex::ControlDailies solution. Introduced this morning at IBC in Amsterdam, the announcement marks the development of a previously unavailable dailies product in the marketplace, built upon two powerful technologies.

Nucoda Look with Cortex::ControlDailies will soon be available as a software package that offers a unique set of integrated features to enable users to seamlessly move the Cortex grades into the Nucoda Look for more precise and controlled “near-set” grading and preparation for final grade. The new package pushes the boundaries of the digital dailies process by offering a simple and powerful production process from set to final colour grading.

In addition to their on-set dailies offering, MTI Film Los Angeles is a leading post production facility serving motion pictures and television projects for major studios and networks, with multiple Nucoda Film Master systems at the center of their colour operations. Recently, they provided remote control dailies for Warner Horizon Televisions’ reboot Dallas. It was during that project, where dailies were moved into Nucoda for final ultimate grading, that MTI Film and Digital Vision were propelled to form the new alliance.

Larry Chernoff, CEO of MTI Film commented, “We have worked closely with the team at Digital Vision for many years, and have found them to consistently bring creative ideas to every project. This partnership is a continuation of our successful collaboration, and we see it as an important service and product for anyone that hopes for powerful colour coherency from day one of dailies to the final delivery.”

Kelvin Bolah, Managing Director, Digital Vision says, “Our intention is to provide a cost effective high-end solution for on-set and near-set dailies that benefit our clients by combining the best experience with MTI’s dailies processing and the industry’s best colour correction solution.”

Gradient Interactive Tapped for Hollywood Post Alliance 2012 Creativity & Innovation Award

“Sandbox” Takes The Prize

(Los Angeles, CA) The HPA announced today that the organization’s distinguished HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation in Post Production will be awarded to Gradient Interactive for their pre-visualization product, Sandbox.

The Creativity and Innovation Award recognizes companies and individuals who have demonstrated excellence in post production, whether in creative storytelling and/or technical innovation. Gradient was chosen from a large and varied field of entrants who provided presentations to a blue ribbon judging panel and will be on hand to accept the award during the HPA Awards gala on November 1, 2012 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA.

Leon Silverman, President of the HPA noted, “The Innovation and Creativity Award was created to honor those people or organizations that are pushing the envelope in post production forward. It was terrific to see the number of entrants and the response to this Award. I applaud the Blue Ribbon panel’s decision to recognize Gradient’s continued outstanding and innovative contributions.”

Gradient Interactive developed the software application Sandbox to offer near real time translation of on-set data into understandable ‘production’ data, ultimately creating a democratized workflow tool that allows users to Pre-visualize sequences. Gradient Interactive’s Sandbox is a mobile, real-time previs system, which enables users to scout virtual locations, record camera moves and render simple animations from an iPad or Android tablet. Offering a great advantage to most of the key departments in production, Sandbox supports the project from start to finish. A director can plan many of his shots without ever seeing location, while the Camera department can plan placement, lenses, lighting, and practice moves. The Production Design/Art Department can create story boards, place props and plan set extensions, while the Visual Effects team can start creating those set extensions. For the Special Effects department, Sandbox can help plan stunts and manage safety parameters.

Gradient Interactive’s Olcun Tan stated, “We are so proud to be recognized by our peers, the organization and by the Committee. The HPA, and in particular the C&I award is extremely meaningful to us, it represents what we strive for in all of our work and in particular the last three years of development of Sandbox. Thank you so much for this Honor.”

The HPA Awards will take place on November 1, 2012 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA. For further information, please visit www.hpaawards.net or call the HPA at 213.614.0860 or write info@hpaawards.net.

Backcountry Pictures’ Award-Winning Film California Forever Set For PBS

The Story of California’s State Parks Premieres Nationally in Fall 2012

(SAN FRANCISCO, CA) Award-winning production company Backcountry Pictures’ latest project, California Forever, will air nationally on PBS stations throughout fall 2012, beginning in California in September (click here for air dates). California Forever is a two-part television special that eloquently tells the moving story of California’s magnificent state parks from 1864 until present day. The program has won a number of regional and environmental film festival honors in the run up to its broadcast premiere.

Known for telling compelling stories with stunning imagery, California Forever further solidifies Backcountry Pictures’ reputation for producing programs with high-end production values. Oscar(r)-nominated director-writer David Vassar, Backcountry Pictures co-founder and producer Sally Kaplan, and cinematographer Christopher Tufty capture the arresting visuals of California’s state park in two, one-hour documentaries.

Episode one of California Forever highlights the discovery and creation of California’s state parks system, taking viewers on a scenic, cultural and historical tour of California’s state parks. The second episode presents the very real challenges that the state parks are currently facing, including habitat destruction by overuse; protection of native species at the expense of recreation; reclaiming industrial brown fields to create new parks in dense urban areas; and park closures.

California Forever was produced over two years, and comprised 70-plus days of shooting at over 45 state parks, including complex indoor settings such as Hearst Castle and the California Railroad Museum, as well as vast outdoor spaces like Yosemite and the California Coast. From the majesty of Lake Tahoe to the arid inspiration of the Anza Borrego Desert, the filmmakers bring the vibrant California State Parks to life.

“I am inspired by the natural world and our creative challenge is to infuse passive scenery with character as well as a story that builds through each episode,” says Vassar, whose credits include Discover Hetch Hetchy, the award-winning film hosted/narrated by Harrison Ford, which served as the centerpiece for the Environmental Defense Fund campaign to restore the lost valley in Yosemite National Park. “To have the ability to take this historical and in-depth look at the incomparable California parks system was an amazing opportunity. With California Forever, we hope to encourage viewers to explore the state parks, not just in California but across the country. There are so many right in your own neighborhood.”

The Backcountry Pictures’ filmmaking team has a history of using the latest, most innovative production tools and pathways. Their film Spirit of Yosemite (2001) broke ground in its use of digital technology together with 35mm film, garnering “best special venue program” at the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival, as well as screening for two consecutive years at the Cannes International Film Festival for its “outstanding achievement in digital cinema.” In Grand Teton National Park, Backcountry created three “Video Rivers.” The short HD programs are projected up from the basement onto glass panels set in the floor of the visitor center – the audience walks on the screens.

Continuing with this high-end imagery tradition, Backcountry captured California Forever with RED cameras in 4K giving the filmmakers stunning images and a future-proof master. “I believe that we are in an era of a quickly evolving toolset that will continue to support stories – be they narrative or documentary,” notes Vassar. “With each new project, we push the technology a bit closer to the edge. No matter what the resolution or the technology, the star of our programs remains story, story, story.”
