Gradient Interactive Tapped for Hollywood Post Alliance 2012 Creativity & Innovation Award

“Sandbox” Takes The Prize

(Los Angeles, CA) The HPA announced today that the organization’s distinguished HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation in Post Production will be awarded to Gradient Interactive for their pre-visualization product, Sandbox.

The Creativity and Innovation Award recognizes companies and individuals who have demonstrated excellence in post production, whether in creative storytelling and/or technical innovation. Gradient was chosen from a large and varied field of entrants who provided presentations to a blue ribbon judging panel and will be on hand to accept the award during the HPA Awards gala on November 1, 2012 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA.

Leon Silverman, President of the HPA noted, “The Innovation and Creativity Award was created to honor those people or organizations that are pushing the envelope in post production forward. It was terrific to see the number of entrants and the response to this Award. I applaud the Blue Ribbon panel’s decision to recognize Gradient’s continued outstanding and innovative contributions.”

Gradient Interactive developed the software application Sandbox to offer near real time translation of on-set data into understandable ‘production’ data, ultimately creating a democratized workflow tool that allows users to Pre-visualize sequences. Gradient Interactive’s Sandbox is a mobile, real-time previs system, which enables users to scout virtual locations, record camera moves and render simple animations from an iPad or Android tablet. Offering a great advantage to most of the key departments in production, Sandbox supports the project from start to finish. A director can plan many of his shots without ever seeing location, while the Camera department can plan placement, lenses, lighting, and practice moves. The Production Design/Art Department can create story boards, place props and plan set extensions, while the Visual Effects team can start creating those set extensions. For the Special Effects department, Sandbox can help plan stunts and manage safety parameters.

Gradient Interactive’s Olcun Tan stated, “We are so proud to be recognized by our peers, the organization and by the Committee. The HPA, and in particular the C&I award is extremely meaningful to us, it represents what we strive for in all of our work and in particular the last three years of development of Sandbox. Thank you so much for this Honor.”

The HPA Awards will take place on November 1, 2012 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA. For further information, please visit www.hpaawards.net or call the HPA at 213.614.0860 or write info@hpaawards.net.

Backcountry Pictures’ Award-Winning Film California Forever Set For PBS

The Story of California’s State Parks Premieres Nationally in Fall 2012

(SAN FRANCISCO, CA) Award-winning production company Backcountry Pictures’ latest project, California Forever, will air nationally on PBS stations throughout fall 2012, beginning in California in September (click here for air dates). California Forever is a two-part television special that eloquently tells the moving story of California’s magnificent state parks from 1864 until present day. The program has won a number of regional and environmental film festival honors in the run up to its broadcast premiere.

Known for telling compelling stories with stunning imagery, California Forever further solidifies Backcountry Pictures’ reputation for producing programs with high-end production values. Oscar(r)-nominated director-writer David Vassar, Backcountry Pictures co-founder and producer Sally Kaplan, and cinematographer Christopher Tufty capture the arresting visuals of California’s state park in two, one-hour documentaries.

Episode one of California Forever highlights the discovery and creation of California’s state parks system, taking viewers on a scenic, cultural and historical tour of California’s state parks. The second episode presents the very real challenges that the state parks are currently facing, including habitat destruction by overuse; protection of native species at the expense of recreation; reclaiming industrial brown fields to create new parks in dense urban areas; and park closures.

California Forever was produced over two years, and comprised 70-plus days of shooting at over 45 state parks, including complex indoor settings such as Hearst Castle and the California Railroad Museum, as well as vast outdoor spaces like Yosemite and the California Coast. From the majesty of Lake Tahoe to the arid inspiration of the Anza Borrego Desert, the filmmakers bring the vibrant California State Parks to life.

“I am inspired by the natural world and our creative challenge is to infuse passive scenery with character as well as a story that builds through each episode,” says Vassar, whose credits include Discover Hetch Hetchy, the award-winning film hosted/narrated by Harrison Ford, which served as the centerpiece for the Environmental Defense Fund campaign to restore the lost valley in Yosemite National Park. “To have the ability to take this historical and in-depth look at the incomparable California parks system was an amazing opportunity. With California Forever, we hope to encourage viewers to explore the state parks, not just in California but across the country. There are so many right in your own neighborhood.”

The Backcountry Pictures’ filmmaking team has a history of using the latest, most innovative production tools and pathways. Their film Spirit of Yosemite (2001) broke ground in its use of digital technology together with 35mm film, garnering “best special venue program” at the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival, as well as screening for two consecutive years at the Cannes International Film Festival for its “outstanding achievement in digital cinema.” In Grand Teton National Park, Backcountry created three “Video Rivers.” The short HD programs are projected up from the basement onto glass panels set in the floor of the visitor center – the audience walks on the screens.

Continuing with this high-end imagery tradition, Backcountry captured California Forever with RED cameras in 4K giving the filmmakers stunning images and a future-proof master. “I believe that we are in an era of a quickly evolving toolset that will continue to support stories – be they narrative or documentary,” notes Vassar. “With each new project, we push the technology a bit closer to the edge. No matter what the resolution or the technology, the star of our programs remains story, story, story.”

Ingenuity Engine and Katy Perry are “Wide Awake” for 3D Music Video

Visual Effects Studio Teams with DNA and Panasonic to Create Dream World

(Los Angeles) Ingenuity Engine – an artist driven and owned visual effects studio – completed extensive work on the 3D music video for “Wide Awake,” which was written for the 3D “Katy Perry: Part of Me” film which opened on July 5. The video was directed by Tony T. Datis of production company DNA.

Ingenuity Engine delivered a wide range of shots in both 2D and 3D for the elaborate fantasy video that takes Perry on a journey through her imagination. “Wide Awake” begins with Perry completing the video for “California Gurls.” When she gets back to her dressing room, she falls into another world. In that magical place, she meets a younger version of herself, and the two face obstacles together while they make their way through an elaborate 3D labyrinth.

“All of the visuals we created for “Wide Awake” had to start as 3D elements,” explains David Lebensfeld, Ingenuity Engine creative director. “With fast-paced music videos like this, we generally use a lot of 2D elements and spend most of our time in compositing, but for “Wide Awake” all of the smoke, particle effects, and matte paintings had to be created in 3D and rendered for both eyes, which required significantly more work in the same tight schedule.”

Ingenuity Engine delivered over 140 shots in less than three weeks, including matte paintings, set extensions, various smoke, fog, fireworks and sparks effects, as well as CG elements, including a flock of CG butterflies that fly off Perry’s dress.

“To create the flock we modeled several unique butterflies, using reference photography taken on set,” says Lebensfeld. “Then these individual butterflies were rigged and animated with an initial flight cycle, which was augmented in a particle system to give each butterfly its own unique animation and flight path. Hero foreground butterflies were hand animated to facilitate the transition to the next scene and to take advantage of the depth we were working with in 3D.”

Compositing for “Wide Awake” was done in The Foundry’s NUKE and NUKEX, and tracking was completed in Andersson Technologies’ SynthEyes(tm). The CG was created in Autodesk(r) 3ds Max(r) along with Sitni Sati’s Fume and Thinkbox Software’s Krakatoa(tm).

“We are lucky to have a long history with DNA. Working closely with Tony and the DNA team allowed us to visualize and then execute the look they imagined,” adds Grant Miller, Ingenuity Engine creative director. “Because of the fast-paced nature of the music video industry, speed is essential. We are very proud that we were not only able to deliver this caliber and quantity of work with a very tight post schedule, but in stereo as well. There is talk that “Wide Awake” is going to set the benchmark for 3D music videos, and I think they’re setting that bar really high.”

The video is currently airing worldwide and can be seen at http://www.katyperry.com. Panasonic will showcase the 3D version of “Wide Awake” at consumer electronics trade shows, including IFA in Berlin as well in stores with Panasonic VIERA TVs on display around the world starting this fall.

Boxx Communications Debuts Meridian Lite and Meridian Tallis at NAB

LAS VEGAS, NV—Boxx Communications, the North America headquarters and official reseller for Emmy Award®-winning manufacturer Boxx TV, unveiled Boxx TV’s latest available technology, including the Meridian Lite and the Meridian Tallis, at its booth (C7219) at the NAB Show®. The annual conference will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada, April 14-19. Boxx’s Meridian product line is used on a wide variety of projects from the upcoming James Bond film Skyfall, to the live Brit Awards, and Emmy Award-winning Modern Family, among others.

“Our demonstrations at NAB will illustrate the ongoing development and innovation in the product line,” notes Boxx Communications Owner Mark Walker. “The team at Boxx is constantly in the field, working events, in venues, and with broadcasters. Our understanding is derived from hands-on experience and drives us to continually evolve and improve our products. What Boxx offers is an incredible option for the industry in terms of functionality and affordability. In many, many tests, we have beaten head-to-head ratings with the more expensive, and in some cases more well-known, competitors.”

The Meridian Lite is an affordable, entry-level RF HD camera system with zero-delay transmission for live broadcast and videography. The less than $10,000 price puts the technology in reach of more budget-conscious users, and is upgradable to Boxx TV’s full-featured, high-end Meridian wireless RF HD camera system. With its lightweight, wireless transmitter, Meridian Lite supports full 4:2:2 video including all formats up to 1080/30p, and delivers uncompressed, artifact-free broadcast video and sound in synch.
Conference goers will also get their first look at the Meridian Tallis, an iris control and tally indicator accessory that provides tally and iris only control, and complements any brand of broadcast camera on a wireless rig or Steadicam. The product is small enough to mount on any camera and the control knob gives accurate high-resolution control to the iris. As Tallis only controls the lens, there is no black level or red/blue gain control, but at a price of around $3,500, it opens up a solution to productions where iris only control is sufficient.

“The Meridan Tallis solves the tricky problem of providing iris control for a variety of different manufacturers’ cameras by tapping directly into the lens to adjust the aperture,” explains Boxx TV co-founder Scott Walker. “There simply isn’t another solution as this price point to control the iris on wireless camera rigs. This enables you to match the brightness of the video from a wireless camera with other cameras.”

In addition to the Meridian Lite and the Meridian Tallis, Boxx will also be demonstrating the Meridian System which provides 4:2:2 uncompressed video with zero delay; the Cobalt system which offers an alternative to COFDM systems with a bi-directional packet acknowledgement protocol that offers extremely robust transmissions; the Cerulean which delivers the quality and reliability of full HD uncompressed fiber link in a cable-free, wireless environment; and a prototype of a lightweight h.264 HD system designed for UAV (unmanned aerial vehicles) including a quadcoptor.

FotoKem’s nextLAB Puts Solid Workflow Into Place for Canon Cinema EOS C500/C500 PL Debut

FotoKem’s nextLAB, a powerful end-to-end software solution for film and television productions using file-based workflows, played a pivotal role in the production of demonstration footage to support the development announcement of the Canon Cinema EOS C500 and the Cinema EOS C500 PL for use with EF-mount and PL-mount lenses respectively. Both upcoming cameras will be capable of originating 4K (4096 x 2160-pixel) resolution digital motion imagery with uncompressed RAW output for external recording. The Cinema EOS C500/C500 PL are upcoming additions to Canon’s Cinema EOS System, a transformational line of digital cameras and lenses that applies advanced Canon digital imaging technology to cameras designed for professional cinematographers. FotoKem provided complete production support for the Cinema EOS C500 demo film, Man & Beast, which premiered Sunday, April 15, at the 2012 NAB Show.

From the early beta stages, FotoKem collaborated and consulted with Canon Inc. on the design of the first end-to-end, 4K production-to-post file system. FotoKem built nextLAB’s high-resolution pipeline on the Academy Color Encoding Specifications (ACES) architecture, making the EOS C500 the first Canon camera to take files from production all the way through post in ACES.

FotoKem’s nextLAB has an enviable pedigree, arising from the 50-year-old post production leader’s deep experience in finishing and workflow alongside their innovative software group, which operates as a development arm and launch pad for services in an ever-changing industry. Enabled by this development arm, FotoKem’s nextLAB system has quickly become the backbone of the company’s file-based workflow solution for feature, television, and commercial productions.

nextLAB’s all-in-one mobile solution for on-set media and asset management is an advanced technological extension of FotoKem’s state-of-the-art, in-house services. Its unique and proprietary core application software enables the nextLAB Mobile system to essentially bring the full power of FotoKem’s data management systems to production. Based on an open architecture, nextLAB Mobile solutions effectively bridge the gap between production and post, while enabling other platforms to easily interact with its functionality.

Notably, nextLAB’s powerful color capabilities were utilized to grade dailies and set the look on Man & Beast, which was shot by acclaimed, Oscar-nominated cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth, ASC (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Social Network, Fight Club), and produced by MJZ for Canon. Margarita Mix, a FotoKem company that boasts an enviable list of feature, television and spot audio credits, handled the mix for the film.

“It has been exciting to work with Canon at the very edge of new camera technologies, experiencing first-hand the latest features available to filmmakers and defining the way they finish their work,” says FotoKem Vice President Mike Brodersen. “Our nextLAB software has helped to define on-set services across a number of productions, and our original, all-in-one dailies and media management platform has evolved to the next level in this process. With Man & Beast, we are seeing the next phase of creative technology for filmmakers come to life.”

“About 99% of the file-based TV and feature projects at FotoKem utilize the nextLAB software,” notes Tom Vice, Vice President and General Manager of the nextLAB system. “Its powerful features provide assurances to cinematographers and directors that their digital media files are safe, viewable, and maintain data integrity at every step of the process. We look forward to working with Canon again in the future to help continue to break the barriers of technology.”

FotoKem Expands to New Orleans

FotoKem has opened a satellite office in New Orleans, Louisiana, to support local productions and provide quick deployment of its award-winning nextLAB services and expertise. The new downtown location near the French Quarter provides a range of industry post production services and support with an infrastructure for file-based dailies, file delivery services and offline editorial systems. FotoKem is currently working with multiple television productions and feature films in the region.

To ensure rapid content delivery from one location to another, the satellite office is fully integrated with FotoKem’s globalDATA platform, which facilitates delivery of content via a secure internet connection. globalDATA can be linked directly to editing rooms, creative offices, company media centers, or any location worldwide.

The expansion into New Orleans is being overseen by industry veteran Peter Santoro, FotoKem’s VP of Feature and Commercial Services.

“FotoKem customers shooting in the region have prompted this expansion,” says FotoKem VP Mike Brodersen. “The need for local, file-based post production and location mobile services is growing as the state enjoys record-breaking production stimulated by tax incentive programs. We are looking forward to helping filmmakers streamline post in the southeast region with nextLAB and experienced on-ground staff.”

According to the state’s film office, Louisiana offers a 30 percent transferable incentive for total in-state expenditures related to the production of a motion picture. An additional 5 percent labor incentive can be earned on the payroll of Louisiana residents that are employed by a state certified motion picture production. The incentives are fully transferable and Louisiana has no limit to the amount of incentives that can be earned by a single production.

Tom Vice, VP and GM of nextLAB, a division of FotoKem, says, “Over the past two years nextLAB has been deployed on a wide range of productions around the world, from Burbank to Beijing and back. The file-based workflow is increasingly entrenched in the filmmaking process, and the need for powerful and reliable tools grows exponentially. Last year over a 100 projects were shot in Louisiana, and predictions for this year are on pace to surpass that. We are excited to bring our decades of post production experience to the region, and provide local support for one of the most advanced tools the industry has to offer.” more
