Boxx TV’s Meridian is Behind the Scenes on Oscar(r)-Nominated Films

Django Unchained, Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty Get Boost from Wireless Technology

(LOS ANGELES, CA) Three of this year’s Academy Award(r)-nominated films chose Boxx TV‘s Meridian Wireless Microwave Broadcast System for reliable, 4:2:2 uncompressed video with zero delay. The Meridian was the system of choice for Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, Sam Mendes’ Skyfall and Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty, capping a busy year for the company headquartered in the UK, along with its reseller Boxx Communications in Los Angeles.

“We are extremely proud that our technology contributed to the amazing stories told in these Oscar(r)-nominated films,” says Scott Walker, co-founder of Boxx TV. “We understand that everything is important during production. Image quality, reliability, and zero delay are all crucial. The Meridian provides high-image quality consistently, and is highly reliable whether you are shooting in high-desert heat on the hunt for Bin Laden, moving through a free-wheeling Tarantino project, or following the action of a legend like Bond. Working with the production teams of these incredibly accomplished films was an honor and a great experience.”

For those situations that demand high-quality, zero-delay HD and SD live transmission, the Meridian is an affordable alternative to traditional COFDM systems with unprecedented success. The Meridian system uses license-exempt channels.

Django Unchained’s five Oscar(r) nods include Best Picture and Best Cinematography, for last year’s Oscar(r) winner, Robert Richardson, ASC. There were two Boxx Meridian systems and handheld receivers used during the production of the multi-nominated Tarantino project.

Skyfall grabbed a total of five nominations, including one for Best Cinematography for Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC. The production used five zero-delay Meridian systems, simultaneously, in conjunction with ALEXA cameras supplied by ARRI Media UK.

Also earning five Oscar(r) nominations, Zero Dark Thirty used three systems and handheld receivers. The film’s Oscar(r) nods include one for Best Picture.

Their customers’ nominations come on the heels of one of the company’s busiest years on record. “It is great to be associated with Oscar(r)-nominated projects and we’re thrilled,” adds Mark Walker, owner of Boxx Communications. “That said, we worked on many great projects last year, from feature films, to live coverage of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, to episodic television shows such as Revenge and Modern Family; and on breaking news stories on stations such KABC, KNBC and KTLA. We are dedicated to making sure that our clients have great images, no delay, and an incomparable ease of use every time.”

Digital Vision’s Phoenix Automates and Refines Restoration Workflow

Software Powers Efforts of High Hat Post and Periscope Film

(Los Angeles, CA) From riding the surf to diving to the ocean’s depths in a submarine, Digital Vision‘s Phoenix Refine restoration software is helping to power the efforts of High Hat Post and Periscope Film. Currently, Phoenix is a crucial tool at High Hat Post in the restoration of a collection of vintage 16 mm surfing movies, as well as current productions. Periscope Film is using Phoenix to automate the restoration of the company’s acquired military footage. Both High Hat Post and Periscope Film attribute the success of their workflows to the unmatched features that Phoenix offers, including its ability to automatically remove dirt, dust, scratches and grain.

Craig Rogers, founder of High Hat Post, worked at IMAX for 11 years “making images perfect.” When he launched his boutique facility a year ago, his previous experience with Phoenix on IMAX footage influenced his choice of tools. Since installing Phoenix in August, High Hat Post has been relying upon the software for a number of titles, including restoring renowned documentary film director/cinematographer Greg MacGillivray’s vintage surfing movies, originally shot on 16mm.

“I chose Phoenix Refine because it is resolution independent, has superior flicker removal, and after really looking at our options, found nothing on the market that came close to its ability to manage grain and keep image detail,” says Rogers. “To do the heavy lifting of scratches, dirt and grain, High Hat Post uses Phoenix Refine not just for old restoration projects but for today’s video productions too.” Rogers also turns to Phoenix for current productions, including the clean up of video noise in low light scenes for an indie film short.

Rogers adds, “I tried all of the competing software packages. With its combination of ease of use, the DVO Clarity tool, and customer support, Phoenix Refine stood apart. It will be an essential tool in restoring the MacGillivray-Freeman surf film library.” A sampling of titles include The Sunshine Sea, Five Summer Stories, Cool Wave of Color, and Free and Easy.

Periscope Film has amassed over 1,000 military films, mostly government training shorts, educational material, or propaganda pieces. The company’s “Operation Archive” library houses some of the most obscure, historic footage long thought lost. Since launching Periscope, owners and preservationists Doug Weiner and Nick Spark have restored over 40 titles, available on DVD or iTunes. Titles restored on Phoenix include the John Ford documentary Memphis Belle, and Secret Life of Adolf Hitler, which was given an “A” rating by iTunes. Periscope also licenses their collection as stock footage.

“Phoenix Refine offers the whole package – a good price for superb automated cleanup of dust and scratches,” says Weiner. “Furthermore, its ability to degrain while preserving just enough grain for aesthetics remains unmatched.”

Weiner says they will render entire films, usually ranging in length from 10 to 30 minutes, for scratches and dirt. “It’s our go-to solution across the board. We pride ourselves on unmatched quality, and Phoenix delivers. We ask the software to do the impossible and it does it automatically. We don’t have the manpower to paint out everything in these archival elements. Phoenix does the job and is uniquely qualified because of its capability for doing multiple layers on one pass in a mechanized setup that’s repeatable!”

Weiner adds that having Digital Vision in Los Angeles was vital to their decision. “It made training easy and local support was important to us,” he says. “We explored other options, but Phoenix Refine answered our need of addressing different, challenging workflows for our unique collection.”

Digital Vision’s Phoenix range of products, with awarding-winning DVO image processing, provides automated, semi-automated and manual file-based restoration capabilities. Phoenix includes tools for film restoration and repair, and a custom range of tools for restoring images from video sources.

Testronic Announces Expansion of File-Based QC Lab

State-of-the-Art Lab Adds UltraViolet Interoperability Testing, Secure Management of Internet Access, and Downstream Deliverables

(Burbank, CA) Testronic Labs, the global leader in quality assurance services for film and television, games, consumer electronics, enterprise, and publishing, has completed a significant expansion to its award-winning File-Based QC Lab (the File-Based Lab), located in the company’s First Street facility in Burbank, California. Building upon the existing secure infrastructure, the File-Based Lab has been upgraded to provide UltraViolet(tm) Interoperability Testing capabilities and related test automation services, including extended services and environments to support the evolving digital ecosystem from mastering to consumer distribution.

UltraViolet is the cloud-based home entertainment industry standard that allows consumers to download and stream movies and TV shows for viewing on a wide range of devices. The expansion of Testronic’s File-Based Lab adds UltraViolet Interoperability Testing services, and features independent test stations supporting both hardware and software-based Common File Format (CFF) Players connected to a secure NAS, allowing client files to be quickly tested against a wide-range of CFF Players. UltraViolet Content Providers, Retailers, Download Service Providers (DSPs), and CFF Player manufacturer licensees can bring and transmit CFF content files for testing against available players, and have their players tested against CFF reference files and representative UltraViolet content. Testronic engineers are available to assist in consultation, setup, configuration, and to perform interoperability testing, including end-to-end consumer purchase, download, and playback scenarios.

In addition to supporting UltraViolet testing, the updated File-Based Lab can securely receive and test digital content and all downstream deliverables for Over-the-Top (OTT) services such as iTunes, Netflix and Hulu. To better support website, web portal and content rights redemption testing, Testronic has further expanded its online test lab environment, adding 12 additional test stations and upgrading the Master QC testing suites with greater functionality and additional technologies.

Albert Koval, Testronic’s Vice President of UltraViolet Services and Software Testing US, said, “Adding UltraViolet interoperability testing capabilities for content and CFF playback devices was a natural extension of the work that began when Phase I of the File-Based Lab was unveiled in mid-2011. The Lab has been designed from the ground up to serve the needs of studios, content providers and player manufacturers as the industry transitions to file-based workflows. Our customers are continually engaged in a never-ending cycle of change regarding the creation, management and delivery of content, and we feel that our ability to look ahead of the horizon and help them be prepared is crucial. Testronic is making this investment to stay ahead in critical areas like UltraViolet that relate to OTT and digital distribution, including the testing of desktop and mobile apps, websites, web portals and plug-in services, all of which are a growing focus for our clients.”

Testronic developed the File-Based Lab after careful research clearly showed a need to support clients in performing end-to-end, secure, testing services in the digital space. 1 Gigabit and 10 Gigabit download capabilities ensure fast, secure ingest of large media files; and future growth is secured, with the ability to add additional testing stations and capacity as needed. In Phase I, the company invested heavily in ground-breaking technology, including an innovative, advanced playback system for high-resolution, multi-format A/V, which reduced the time and equipment required to test the many master and distribution content file formats that exist across the entertainment ecosystem. The Phase II expansion is a continuation of thoughtful and advanced creativity by the Testronic team to develop file-based testing services to support clients now and in the future.

About Testronic Labs
Testronic’s high standards have been protecting clients and safeguarding the consumer experience since 1998. FotoKem Automates nextLAB Integration with PIX System; Improved Process Powers “House of Cards” Dailies

BURBANK, Calif. (December 18, 2012) – The latest version of FotoKem’s award-winning nextLAB™ software for advanced media management now automates the transfer of dailies to PIX System’s industry-leading digital collaboration service. nextLAB transcodes the source media files, and immediately uploads the material and over 60 fields of searchable metadata per take directly into PIX. This strategic relationship increases the efficiency of a dailies workflow, and makes it easier for productions to securely access and leverage not just their media, but all the associated production data.

This improved process has been deployed on a number of projects, including the recent production of House of Cards for NetFlix. The automated nature and integration of nextLAB to PIX for dailies on House of Cards added a new level of data management firepower to the shoot, while keeping the workflow streamlined and simple.

Developed in house by FotoKem’s software team, nextLAB is an on-set and near-location solution for file-based workflows that supports projects from camera to color through editing and archive. nextLAB can manage digital files and metadata for a wide array of cameras in the marketplace – including ARRI, Sony, RED, Canon and Silicon Imaging – and incorporates the Academy Color Encoding Specifications (ACES) architecture.

PIX System’s secure digital collaboration platform is widely used on feature and television productions around the globe by filmmakers, motion picture studios and television networks. Over 700 productions have used the PIX service to view, manage and collaborate on their media during various phases of production and marketing.

Larry Schalit, Senior Vice President of PIX System, comments, “FotoKem shares our dedication to client service and to integrating new technology into file-based workflows. nextLAB is a great example of that commitment. They’ve been very proactive in working with us to seamlessly integrate the dailies workflow for our clients – from the camera through to PIX, the edit room, and on to archive. With nextLAB, filmmakers using PIX can be viewing dailies in our system a couple of hours after being shot. Furthermore, by capturing all of the metadata at the source, our clients are able to easily search and organize material by virtually any attribute. This saves significant time and effort throughout the project.”

FotoKem’s nextLAB was designed to identify, capture, carry and manage extensive amounts of information throughout the workflow from dailies to archive. The metadata gathered in nextLAB and now automatically shared through PIX allows for easy viewing, commenting, collaborating and manipulating of the data on set, at the studio, in editing rooms, at visual effects houses, or by other important stakeholders of a production.

Tom Vice, Vice President and General Manager of nextLAB for FotoKem, notes, “The collaboration with PIX System delivers speed, efficiency and a rich set of metadata to our customers. Their services are the industry standard at the major studios, as well as network and cable television. In combination with nextLAB, we’ve opened up the process for automatic, quick information sharing that is ideally suited to the data that nextLAB gathers and the way filmmakers need to access their material. Additionally, the team at PIX is simply outstanding, and we look forward to working closely with them for ongoing innovation for our customers.”

Visual Data Announces Opening of New Premier Facility

Company to Launch 21st Century Facility in Burbank

(Burbank, CA) Visual Data Media Services – an industry leading provider of integrated end-to-end post production solutions and distribution for all media outlets – has announced the opening date of their new, state-of-the-art facility in Burbank, California. The new location will greatly expand the capacity of Visual Data’s current space and was designed from scratch to support 21st century workflows and accommodate the needs of a changing industry. Upon taking ownership of the Hollywood Way building earlier this year, the veteran post production company gutted the space to its outside walls, and an innovative, data centric facility arose in its place. The new Visual Data location will open its doors, with no interruption in service, on January 2, 2013.

John Trautman, President of Visual Data, commented, “We simply had to increase capacity to meet demand, and moving was a long term investment we were willing to make. When I first looked at the building, it was apparent that a lot of work would be needed to meet our goals, but I also knew that it presented an amazing opportunity. We had the chance to gut a strong structure in a great location, and then visualize exactly how we would build out a space and infrastructure to meet the demands of today’s industry and tomorrow’s as well. A place that would be thoroughly outstanding for our clients and our staff to work.”

The 30,000 square foot facility features 20 suites for editing, QC, color correction, and captioning, built around a highly secure Data Center, a large Digital Machine Room, and an Encoding Center. The cutting-edge Data Center was built to support the company’s proprietary Asset Management System, which will simplify and refine distribution and archival tasks for the company’s clients. The new space will also offer 2 mix stages, an ADR stage, and a Foley stage that will be unveiled early in 2013. The latest products from a number of leading vendors are being installed; including DVS-SAN, Aspera, Isilon, Avascent, Miranda, and DaVinci.

The increased capacity afforded by the new facility will support Visual Data’s wide ranging service offerings dedicated to the creation, management, repurposing and distribution of content; including Subtitling and Localization, Closed Captioning, DVD services, Syndication services, Asset Management, Encoding, Digital Cinema DCP, and Digital Delivery. “In today’s content driven world, everything is repurposed, repackaged and delivered a number of times. There are many steps involved to the work that we touch, and we’ve made it our business to make that process as easy as possible for our customers. That’s a core part of our business, and we wanted to bring a future-centric strategy to those services, including automation and data centric workflows,” noted Trautman.

The company’s investment, totaling more than eleven million dollars, comes at a time when some independent facilities are facing an economic slowdown. However Visual Data has carefully structured its business in a way that supports the evolving needs of its client base. Concluded Trautman, “This move is a fantastic opportunity for us to grow our footprint and accommodate the changing needs of our customers. We see this as an investment in a bright future.”

Digital Vision Empowers Siren Digital

New State-of-the-art Hollywood Facility Relies on Nucoda and Phoenix

(LOS ANGELES, CA) Siren Digital, a film, TV and new media production group, has yet again turned to Digital Vision for a number of solutions to power the company’s new, state-of-the-art facility in Hollywood. Siren Digital has chosen Digital Vision’s Nucoda high-end color grading system with the DVO toolset and Precision control panel to sustain their DI and technological operations. Continuing a long-standing collaborative relationship, the team at Siren has worked with Digital Vision over many years, beginning with installations of Nucoda in Santa Monica and extending overseas to large-scale, facility build-outs in Korea and China. Over the course of many projects, the companies have found new ways to produce and manage the creation and delivery of entertainment content.

Kyle Jackson, co-founder of Siren Digital noted, “We have a significant comfort level and familiarity with Digital Vision’s outstanding toolset, support, and R&D group, built upon years of experience at another facility we designed and operated in Los Angeles, and global projects we’ve managed. Over the past five years, Digital Vision has been the backbone of many of our endeavors. Their software proves time and again to be able to handle the real-world challenges of changing post production workflows.”

Digital Vision’s Nucoda grading and mastering solutions offer a powerful color toolset that integrates easily with customized workflows. It supports ACES, all the major digital camera formats on the market, and provides robust features for creative flexibility. The Precision panel adds a high level of control for colorists, with its unique, industry-leading combination of tactile controls and integrated touch-sensitive panels.

The awarding-winning DVO (Digital Vision Optics) image processing software provides a comprehensive solution for image repair, restoration, enhancement and format conversion whether originated from film or video. DVO tools are only available on Digital Vision’s Nucoda and Phoenix platforms.

Siren Studios, an emerging 360-degree production studio, and Siren Digital together offer a broad base of services to the industry, from creative to advanced production, visual effects, post production audio, film finance, and international distribution. “We are engaged in a number of traditional and emerging processes, globally, and it is crucial that our tools work now and evolve with the way our colleagues want to collaborate in the future. While we are involved in some very technologically advanced work, we are also working daily on digital intermediates, designing post workflows, and delivering projects. We believe that Digital Vision is with us today and for the long run.”

In 2011, Digital Vision supported a massive restoration and color pipeline project for Jackson in South Korea with over 200 licenses for Digital Vision’s Phoenix restoration software. Jackson notes, “We knew from our experience that the range of capabilities – Phoenix for restoration and Nucoda for grading, as well as the tools in the highly regarded DVO toolset – was a perfect fit.”

Jackson adds, “Working with Digital Vision has always been one of the most rewarding technological collaborations we have ever engaged in. Their willingness to work closely with us to devise solutions is crucial. They understand real-world demands as well as creative needs. Just as important as the toolset is their willingness to respond with flexibility, ingenuity and dedication.”

Kelvin Bolah, President of Digital Vision stated, “We have known the Siren team for years, and have seen them consistently do ground breaking, interesting work. They think a bit differently, and they think big. You must be careful with words like ‘visionary,’ but that’s what we consider Siren Digital. We are looking forward to the exciting projects that Kyle, and his partners Jeff Brue and Matthew Treinish, have in their pipeline.”

Digital Vision’s Nucoda and Phoenix systems are in use around the globe on thousands of features, commercials, broadcast programs and restoration projects. To learn more about Siren Digital, visit www.siren6500.com. For further information about Digital Vision please visit www.digitalvision.tv.

Xytech partnered with HBO to plan and execute a large-scale implementation of software that we knew was going to be challenging, and was critical to HBO’s operations. With a limited time frame to execute, the volume of assets involved, and the time-dependent nature of the work that travels through the pipeline at the HBO Studio, the project required meticulous planning. The carefully thought-out implementation plan ended with a full scale Go Live deadline, which had their system ready for studio and editorial on Monday morning.”

Lynne Chernow, Senior Vice President of Application Development at HBO, said, “The planning and deployment of MediaPulse clearly demonstrated technical expertise, team work, and a focus on getting the job done. Clear thinking and effective customer care won the day. We hit our deadlines and benchmarks with no interruption of our services. Xytech helped us deliver a crucial system, and the manner in which the integration was executed was exemplary.”

Concluded Dolan, “Our collaborative MediaPulse platform was designed to accommodate today’s multifaceted workflows as exemplified by the HBO Studio. They are continually delivering world-class content, and we are honored to be working with them.”

Margarita Mix’s Jimmy Hite Receives Sound Mixing Award for Nissan Leaf Spot

Jimmy Hite, Chief Sound Engineer for Margarita Mix, won the Hollywood Post Alliance (HPA) Award for Outstanding Sound in a Commercial for the Nissan Leaf spot, “Gas Powered Everything.” Hite’s work on the commercial included a 5.1 surround sound mix. He was also recognized earlier this year with a Bronze Telly Award for the same spot.

“TBWA\Chiat\Day requested our high-quality sound mixing services, understanding the effect that 5.1 surround sound brings to enhancing the final mix,” says Senior Producer Whitney Warren of Margarita Mix. “And Jimmy has the right combo of expertise and skill to create just the right balance of the various elements for a compelling brand experience. We are proud of our experienced, award-winning talent roster and the creative environment they bring forth for our clients.”

Hite has over 30 years of experience in sound mixing for the commercial and advertising industries, and has won numerous awards throughout his career. Since joining Margarita Mix/LA Studios, Hite has provided sound mixing and recording services to a multitude of advertising clients, including Nissan, Activision, Disney, AT&T, Kaiser Permanent, and UPS, among others. He works alongside accomplished mixers and sound designers at Margarita Mix, such as Nathan Dubin, Jeff Levy, and Paul Hurtubise, rounding out a robust service offering at the studio.

Honoring innovation and artistry in post production, the HPA Awards were presented November 1 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. The spot can viewed here: http://vimeo.com/25536623.
