The HPA Announces 2014 Winners of Engineering Excellence Awards and HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation

MACOM, NVIDIA, Wohler/Cinnafilm for Engineering Excellence, ASC-CDL, DigitalFilm Tree Garner Honors for Creativity and Innovation

2014 HPA Awards

(Los Angeles, CA) – The Hollywood Post Alliance(r) has announced recipients of the organization’s 2014 Engineering Excellence Award and the HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation in Post Production. These awards were developed to recognize the technical excellence and creative innovation that continually drive the post production industry in the advancement and support of content creation. The coveted honors will be bestowed on November 6th, 2014 during the ninth annual HPA Awards gala at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA.

The Engineering Excellence Award spotlights companies and individuals who draw upon technical and creative ingenuity and apply it to real world post production demands while raising the profile of breakthrough technologies.

The winners of the 2014 HPA Engineering Excellence Awards are:

MACOM: 12G-SDI Chipset
12G-SDI is the next data rate in the evolution of SDI, and MACOM has introduced the industry’s first complete chipset to enable next-generation 4K video production applications. Our newest family of SDI equalizers, reclockers and cable drivers supports 4K video resolutions at 60 frames per second over a single link and complements our industry-leading crosspoint switch portfolio.

“The MACOM team is honored to accept an Engineering Excellence Award from the Hollywood Post Alliance,” said Hasnain Bajwa, Senior Vice President and General Manager, High-Performance Analog at MACOM. “We are encouraged to be recognized for our technical achievement by such an esteemed panel of industry insiders and thankful for the contributions of our customers, partners and supporters as we help to enable the migration to 12G-SDI for the next generation of broadcast video equipment.”

NVIDIA: NVIDIA VCA
Accelerate design and VFX workflows with NVIDIA(r) Visual Computing Appliance (VCA), the fastest way to interactive photorealistic digital 3D models and scenes. This network-attached appliance easily integrates into the design workflow and scales to multiple VCAs, each decreasing the time to noiseless, physically based global illumination.

“The Hollywood Post Alliance’s recognition of NVIDIA VCA is validation of how our GPU rendering appliance is changing the way filmmakers, artists and animators work. NVIDIA VCA removes the need to wait hours for rendered movies and allows artists to interact and edit their photo-real digital models in real time, dramatically accelerating the review and approval process,” said Jeff Brown, vice president and general manager of Professional Visualization and Design at NVIDIA.

Wohler/Cinnafilm Joint Venture: Tachyon Wormhole
Tachyon Wormhole is a file-based Retiming and Standards Transcoding solution which leverages commodity enterprise hardware to deliver content based on time or standards requirements. Fully automated with audio pitch correction and caption retiming, Tachyon Wormhole processes two files faster than real time, simultaneously, on a single small footprint server.

Ernie Sanchez, COO, Cinnafilm, Inc. commented, “Because it is peer-based, few awards invoke the same sense of pride as the HPA Engineering Excellence award. We are truly honored to be recognized a second time by the HPA for our achievements, and we are thrilled that we earned it through intelligent partnering with the team at Wohler.”

The HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation in Post Production was conceived to recognize companies and individuals who have demonstrated excellence, whether in the development of workflow and process to support creative storytelling and/or technical innovation. A jury of peers and industry experts determines the HPA Judges Award winners.

The 2014 winners of the HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation in Post Production are:

American Society of Cinematographers: Color Decision List (ASC CDL)
The ASC CDL helps maintain and communicate creative intent, from production, dailies, post, VFX, editorial, in a multi-facility, multi-vendor environment. The ASC CDL enables creatives to set the look of a shot via system-independent primary color corrections communicated as metadata from on-set through dailies and post. Developed by the ASC Technology Committee – a broad group of industry members working to benefit the industry – the ASC CDL is freely available, saving time and money, improving the artistic result and audience experience in the vast majority of motion pictures, TV shows, and VFX.

David Reisner, D-Cinema Consulting commented, “We are honored to be recognized by our colleagues at the HPA. The ASC CDL was developed to help all participants in the production and post pipeline most effectively produce the best result and deliver the creative vision of filmmakers to audiences. The ASC CDL could only have been created by filmmakers, the post community, and vendors’ active collaboration.”

DigitalFilm Tree: Cloud Post Workflow Initiative (ProStack)
ProStack enables instantly accessible, widely deployable post production. ProStack packs the capacity and bandwidth needed to manage the entire post process- high-end color correction, VFX and DI workflows- into a scalable solution. Flexible design and implementation incorporates the best tools for every job, connecting all users via cloud storage. ProStack, in conjunction with Critique, integrates the entire spectrum of file-based workflows into one hub, while simultaneously embracing the evolving role of production and the post facility.

Guillaume Aubuchon, DigitalFilm Tree CTO commented, “We have been focused on developing a system that is truly cloud based and easily useable for our clients, an OpenStack environment with secure and instantaneous access. It is an honor to be recognized by the HPA for our work on ProStack, and we are honored to receive our second C&I Award.”

Leon Silverman, President of the HPA commented, “The HPA Awards have become an important acknowledgement and celebration of creativity in content, technology and workflow innovation. This year’s awards for Engineering Excellence and Creativity and Innovation in Post Production represent significant and foundational new approaches. The HPA is proud to be able to recognize these outstanding achievements.”

Autoscript to Launch E.P.I.C. 19 at IBC

New integrated teleprompter and talent monitor brings versatility to studio environment

Twickenham, UK (September 9, 2014)Autoscript, part of Vitec Videocom, a Vitec Group company, has announced the launch of E.P.I.C. 19, a 19-inch Enhanced Prompting Information Centre. Based on the 17-inch E.P.I.C., the world’s first fully integrated prompting and on-air system, the E.P.I.C. 19 has been developed for use in large studios that have a requirement for a smart system to display prompter text and transmission images to talent.

The E.P.I.C. 19 features dual SDI inputs as standard, one for the prompter monitor and the other for the talent monitor, and an integrated tally light. The 19-inch LED prompter monitor is backlit, while the super thin on-air monitor delivers crisp and clear images to talent.

By combining both monitors in the same system, the E.P.I.C. 19 is more lightweight, and the requirement for additional components is eliminated. There is no need for an additional mounting assembly for the talent monitor, and despite the size of the display, the E.P.I.C. 19 enables camera operators to make use of full camera tilt.

“The E.P.I.C. integrated solution brings added versatility and functionality to studio operations,” says Robin Brown, product manager of Autoscript. “In addition, the system is energy efficient due to the high-bright LEDs, and the long life of the prompting screen ensures durability and long-term cost savings.”

The E.P.I.C. 19 features inputs for both LTC and VITC and can therefore display time code and tally functions via Autoscript’s ClockPlus-E and TallyPlus-E.

“We will also be releasing the TallyPlus-E at IBC. It displays the camera number and tally state, and clips into place on the front of both the 17- and 19-inch E.P.I.C. models. It requires no external power or cabling, taking all its data internally via the E.P.I.C., to further simplify the prompting system,” concludes Brown.

Both the E.P.I.C. 19 and TallyPlus-E will be in action at IBC at the Autoscript stand 11.E55 in hall 11.

Vinten Radamec Launches Class-leading Elevation Units

Bury St Edmunds, UK - Vinten Radamec(r), a Vitec Group company and world leader in robotic camera support systems, will be launching two new elevation units at IBC this month. The Vinten Radamec FE-165 and FE-55 elevation units bring class-leading on-air height control and versatility to large, fully automated, small production studios.

The elevation units leverage the column construction of the popular FP-188 Fusion robotic pedestal paired with a brand new drive and transmission design. Every shot is captured with a high level of accuracy and the ultra-smooth, slow movement ensures precise shot trimming. Utilizing Vinten Radamec’s ICE platform, the units benefit from s-ramping motion control for superior start/stop functionality, allowing on-air transitions. Both units have a small base diameter which is able to fit through a standard door opening and will pack into a flight case for transportation if needed. In addition, both the FE-165 and FE-55 can be upgraded for virtual reality functionality, which enables them to deliver additional versatility to any studio environment.

The FE-165 is a premium integrated height solution – space and cost efficient – and features a full range of motion and excellent performance, indicative of the Vinten Radamec brand. Its extensive height range and exceptional speed enable rapid high-to-low transitions to offer a level of creativity previously only achievable through the use of jibs.

The FE-165 supports large camera packages weighing up to 55kg and when manual control is required, the unit can be operated using a pan bar-mounted height controller.

The FE-55, on the other hand, has been designed to support smaller camera packages while still offering the same performance, but at a more competitive price. “When combined with the Vinten Radamec CP4 control system, the FE-55 enables smaller studios to provide an additional axis of movement enhancing available shots,” says Karen Walker, product director, Vinten Radamec.

Both units also feature an integrated power supply that allows direct connection with mains and eliminates the need for a separate power supply unit.

The new units will be on display at IBC on the Vinten Radamec stand (11.E55).

Lights, Power and Broadcast Support on Display at SET Expo 2014

Anton/Bauer, Autoscript, Litepanels and Sachtler to Showcase Latest Wares

SAO PAULO, BRAZIL – Autoscript, Anton/Bauer, Litepanels and Sachtler – brands of the Vitec Group – will be showcasing their latest production support gear at SET Expo 2014 at booth # D01. The tradeshow and conference is presented by the Brazilian Society of Television Engineers (SET) and focuses on broadcast and new media technology. The expo runs August 25-27 at the Expo Center North here in Sao Paulo.

SET is the technical association of professionals and companies focusing on disseminating, expanding, studying and improving all technical, scientific and operational knowledge in television, telecom, radio, internet and new media sectors of the industry. It is one of the largest broadcast events for Latin America.

The Vitec booth will include:

* Anton/Bauer(r)’s V-Mount Digital Battery Series will be on display. The company’s revolutionary Digital Battery Series is the first battery line designed specifically to power digital productions and deliver a new level in safety. Their innovative design features a “double skinned” architecture where the cells are individually contained in an impact-resistant and flame-retardant plastic honeycomb, with a 2mm air gap between them, ensuring no cells touch and air can circulate to keep the pack cool. This entire cell pack is “suspended” within the stylish impact resistant outer case, maintaining a 5mm air gap around it to prevent crushing and accidental penetration of the cells themselves by a sharp object. Additional safety features include thermal sensors that continually monitor the battery, and if a rise in temperature is detected a switch is opened to prevent further charge or discharge. Similarly the charge and discharge currents are continually monitored and if too much current is flowing, the battery switches off.

The new battery series, also available with Gold Mount(r) connectors, meets the unique needs of 4K camera set-ups and other digital cameras in use today, while providing top-tier levels of safety, performance and reliability. With the introduction of a V-Mount option to the Digital Battery Series, Anton/Bauer’s best of breed batteries will now be available for use with any camera, accessories, lights, monitors, and recorders, among other equipment, and includes three battery sizes (90 Wh, 150 Wh and 190 Wh).

* Autoscript will demonstrate their EPIC 17, the world’s first fully integrated prompting and on-air system. It features the brightest 17″ LED prompting screen combined with an integrated 17″ full HD-SDI on-air monitor that bring flexibility and versatility to studio operations. The system negates the need for extra mounting brackets and therefore ensures that camera operators can make use of the full camera tilt range. The system is also power efficient, using 20% less power than other solutions and weighing 3kg less. Other features include long lifetime of the prompting screen – more than 70,000 hours – and simplified cable management with just one cable for both prompter and monitor.

Autoscript will also exhibit their WinPlus Remote solution, an iOS-based teleprompting system that delivers up-to-date scripts to users in the field, anywhere in the world. The technology is also suited to remote news bureaus and smaller newsroom operations. When WinPlus Remote is installed on a networked PC in the production facility, the latest version of the script can be seen by journalists on location, as well as in the studio. The software enables the script to be automatically uploaded to an FTP site where it can be downloaded onto an iPad by talent in the field and kept constantly updated. AMIA Partners with Alamo Drafthouse to offer 35mm Projection Workshop

Archival experts provide projection training for movie houses offering the 35mm film experience

(Los Angeles, CA) – AMIA will present a Film Projection Workshop in partnership with the Alamo Drafthouse to offer expert-led training for managers, curators and projectionists presenting 35mm film in theaters. The workshop will be held October 28, 2014 in Austin at the Alamo South Lamar location.

As digital technology has presented new opportunities to filmmakers and exhibitors, it has also impacted the availability of prints for theatres showing 35mm film. Fewer prints are available, and many of those come from archives and similar institutions that cannot replace these valuable assets should they become damaged. This makes the handling and projection of film prints critical, and the need for training vital.

“While digital has become the primary exhibition format, many theaters continue to show 35mm film prints. A number of films are simply not available in digital and showing them in their original 35mm format allows new audiences to appreciate rare prints, archive films, and titles from private collections,” noted AMIA board member Elena Rossi-Snook. “But it also requires special skills to work with rare and archival prints.”

The workshop will offer a hands-on tutorial for projectionists and theater staff working with 35mm film prints and will focus on film preparation and projection as well as special stipulations for archival projection, coordinating with lending institutions, and paperwork. Class size will be limited to 20 participants.

“I love digital projection for new release films, but only a tiny sliver of our vast film history will ever make it to the DCP format,” said Alamo Drafthouse CEO Tim League. “As an industry, we must continue to preserve, protect and carefully screen 35mm films and maintain our 35mm projection equipment. The day we stop is the day cinema as we know it is dead.”

Participants will receive industry-wide recognition for completion of the workshop, indicated by a certificate from AMIA. Participants may find more information and register at www.projectionworkshop.org. Registration opens August 10, 2014.
