Sohonet Launches First Dedicated Storage Service for the Media and Entertainment Industry

Sohonet Media Storage Expands and Extends Production and Post-Production Storage Capability on Pay-As-You-Go Basis for Sohonet Media Network Community

Ben Dair, Director of Product Management

(LONDON, UK) Sohonet, the leading expert in connectivity and data management for the media and entertainment industry, has announced the launch of Sohonet Media Storage, the first private cloud storage as a service platform tuned and optimized for the media sector and accessed via its world-renowned Sohonet Media Network.

Sohonet Media Storage is an extensible, secure and flexible storage solution, which provides additional and supplementary storage capability to existing infrastructures when local storage has reached critical or maximum utilization. The service has a variety of pricing plans to suit all project sizes, which should prove particularly appealing to creative businesses that tend to predominantly operate on a short-term, project basis.

Ben Dair, Sohonet's Director of Product Management, commented, "As digital workloads rapidly increase, the demands made on media companies' IT infrastructure, especially at peak times, is often unsustainable. Media companies and service providers are crying out for a short term, flexible storage service that enables them to expand and extend storage capability on production or post-production projects quickly, easily and without having to purchase and maintain assets. Sohonet Media Storage has been developed to respond to this need by providing flexible, affordable access to short and long-term archiving, back up, and parking as well as a viable option for intermediate storage or as an alternative to LTO or portable disks."

Sohonet Media Storage is attached and embedded within the Sohonet Media Network which, unlike other storage providers, ensures that, productions and post-production companies can leverage the benefit of their Sohonet Media Network connection at speeds of up to 10Gbit/s, with no data transfer charges in or out nor bandwidth limitations on transfer speeds. The solution is built on Open Stack technology, with the embedded redundancy required to reassure media businesses that their valuable digital assets are in good hands. The service provides customers with one terabyte to multiple petabytes of data storage, at the flick of a switch as if located on-site, and provides intuitive tools to allow customers to scale their provision up and down, as required.

Dave Scammell, CEO

Dave Scammell, CEO, Sohonet, said, "We are expanding our reputation as a world- leading connectivity and data management company by adding increased value to our existing services. We understand exactly what our media customers need to help them meet the many challenges of a demanding digital world, and we are extending our expertise beyond the network, to include a range of specialist, media-aware offerings, on an infrastructure-as-a-service basis. Our latest service, Sohonet Media Storage promises to take the headache out of storage procurement on both a short and long-term basis for new and existing members of our Sohonet Media Network. The new service will enable content producers to manage more projects and internal resources without impacting on capital expenditure, and we believe that we have created the ideal storage service to fully support our customer's journey into an exciting digital future."

By integrating the storage offering into the Sohonet Hub alongside Sohonet's award winning FileRunner file transfer solution, customers continue to benefit from an increasing range of tools and services available on the Sohonet platform.

Sohonet Media Storage is ideal for: parking, short-term archive, long-term archive, in-production remote storage, transition storage between ingest and post-production, shadow storage and the replacement of portable media.

Bexel Supports Healing in the Heartland: Relief Benefit Concert

Special Live Telecast Raised Money for United Way of Central Oklahoma

Bexel, a unit of the Vitec Group‘s Services Division and a leading worldwide provider of broadcast services and solutions, contributed broadcast equipment and engineer expertise to the recent telecast of Healing in the Heartland: Relief Benefit Concert at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City. Organized by Oklahoma native Blake Shelton, the concert was televised live on NBC. It also aired live and/or delayed on cable networks Style, G4, Bravo, E! and CMT.

“Bexel has an outstanding relationship with some of the top tech managers throughout the country, and when the Healing in the Heartland event was conceived, they reached out to us,” says Justin Paulk, fiber business segment manager, Bexel ESS. “Due to our involvement with the NBA, we have documentation showing the infrastructure of the Chesapeake Energy Arena. We provided this information to the tech managers, giving them quick insight into the facility. We also offered available gear and staff, including prebuilt press bridges from our Burbank office.”

Due to the quick nature of this project, the Bexel team drove the necessary equipment and staff to Oklahoma City. Once there, Bexel provided onsite technical support, the press bridge set up, fiber cable, and the fiber electronics to move the additional signals needed around the arena.

“We were honored to be a part of something so special and thrilled that the network of people we work with regularly trusted us to respond,” adds Paulk.

The program, which earned the highest viewer ratings the night of May 29, was executive produced by R.A. Clark (Academy of Country Music Awards, MDA Show of Strength) with supervising producer Rob Paine and director Gregg Gelfand.

In addition to Shelton, Miranda Lambert, Reba McEntire, Vince Gill, Rascal Flatts, Luke Bryan and Darius Rucker performed.

HPA Awards Creative Category Early Bird Entry Fees Ends June 14

Engineering Excellence, Creativity and Innovation Deadlines Also Approaching

(Hollywood, CA) The Hollywood Post Alliance has announced that several important deadlines are approaching for the 8th Annual HPA Awards Call for Entries. Early Bird pricing, which will end June 14, 2013, provides reduced entry fees for the Creative Categories. The Creative Categories cover feature film, television and commercials and include Outstanding Color Grading, Editing and Sound, as well as an expanded Visual Effects category, which replaces the Compositing categories. Regular, non-discounted entry fees will apply for these categories from June 15 through the final Creative Category entry deadline of July 12, 2013. The final entry deadlines for the HPA Engineering Excellence Award and the HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation are also nearing.

In addition to the Creative Categories, there are two awards that draw attention to other areas of post production with upcoming deadlines – The Engineering Excellence Award, which spotlights the companies and individuals bringing technical and creative ingenuity to the real world of post production while raising the profile of breakthrough technologies within the industry; and The HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation in Post Production, which was conceived to recognize companies and individuals who have made significant achievements and pushed the envelope forward in post production, whether in creative storytelling and/or technical innovation. Valid entries should demonstrate new approaches in tools, workflows or ideas from a technical, creative or efficiency perspective. Both Engineering Excellence and the Creativity and Innovation Award are accepting submissions through June 21, 2013.

Kodak Goes Behind-the-Scenes With Acclaimed Cinematographers at Cine Gear Expo

Eric Alan Edwards, Giles Nuttgens and Rachel Morrison Headline Panels

LOS ANGELES, CA – Kodak will host two discussions with acclaimed cinematographers at this year’s Cine Gear Expo on the Paramount Lot in Los Angeles. On Friday, May 31, at 5:15 p.m., Kodak will sit down with award-winning cinematographer Giles Nuttgens, BSC for a conversation in the Paramount Theater. On Saturday, June 1, at 11:45 a.m., the “Sundance in Summer” panel will feature Eric Alan Edwards (Lovelace) and Rachel Morrison (Fruitvale Station) in The Sherry Lansing Theater.

In a candid conversation, Nuttgens will reveal the thinking behind his extensive body of work — including the imagery, technology, career choices, and his collaborations. The seminar will offer a glimpse into the mind of one of today’s more innovative artists.

Nuttgens shot the recently released What Maisie Knew with the directing team Scott McGehee and David Siegel, and Midnight’s Children, based on the best-selling Salman Rushdie novel. Nuttgens’ extensive feature resume also includes Mehta’s elemental trilogy Fire, Earth and Water, which received a 2007 Oscar(r) nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and earned Nuttgens the 2006 GENIE Award for Best Cinematography. Nuttgens first worked with McGehee and Siegel on The Deep End, a film which earned him the 2001 Sundance Film Festival Award for Best Cinematography, and a nomination in the same category at the 2002 Independent Spirit Awards. His next films include the upcoming features Young Ones and God Help the Girl.

Both Edwards and Morrison recently had movies that were stand outs at the Sundance Film Festival. This panel conversation will delve into their creative and budgetary considerations made prior to and during production. The cinematographers will also give the audience behind-the-scenes insight on the collaborations with their directors – Ryan Coogler who took his first turn at the helm on Fruitvale Station; and the dual visionary team on Lovelace comprised of Oscar(r)-winning director Rob Epstein and Emmy(r)-nominated Jeffrey Friedman, both with documentary backgrounds.

Edwards’ film Lovelace is the story of adult film legend Linda Lovelace, who starred in the 1972 film Deep Throat. The film will hit cinema screens in August. Edwards received an Indie Spirit Award nomination for My Own Private Idaho, and has an eclectic list of credits including Gus Van Sant’s Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up, David Dobkin’s The Change-Up, and the upcoming Delivery Man from director Ken Scott.

Morrison lensed Fruitvale Station, which was the winner of both the Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. Based on real events, the film follows Oscar Grant on the final day of 2008, and his untimely death New Year’s Day at the hands of a transit police officer in Oakland, Calif. The film will be released by The Weinstein Co. on July 26. Morrison’s credits include Palo Alto, CA; and the upcoming thriller The Harvest, among others. Morrison will receive the Kodak Vision Award at the 2013 Women in Film Crystal + Lucy Awards(r) on June 12.
The panel is free with admission to Cine Gear Expo. Advanced registration for the Expo can be done at www.cinegearexpo.com. The website also includes directions and additional information.

Nathan Dubin and Jeff Levy of Margarita Mix Win Telly Awards

(HOLLYWOOD, CA) – Mixers Nathan Dubin and Jeff Levy of Margarita Mix, a FotoKem company specializing in audio post services for commercials and advertising media, have each won a 2013 Telly Award in the Sound/Sound Design category of the 34th annual competition. Dubin earned a Silver Telly for his work on Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights “Gates” spot for David & Goliath. Levy took the Bronze Telly for G-Net’s “Borderlands 2.”

The Telly Awards honor the very best film and video productions, groundbreaking online video content, and outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs. For over 30 years, the Telly Awards have been known for honoring the most worthy projects in film, television, corporate and advertising. This year, the competition drew over 13,000 entries. The judging and oversight committee is comprised of top industry professionals who are all past winners of Silver Telly Awards.

Every year, the Universal Studios(r) theme park is transformed into the award-winning Halloween Horror Nights(r) for a month just prior to Halloween. During that time, spine-chilling street experiences, haunted houses and live shows fill the park. The TV commercial for Halloween Horror Nights builds suspense for the holiday event, and plays on the theme and tagline: Once You’re Inside There is No Way Out. The :30 spot opens on a group of young friends in a dark, ominous alley. They look up to see another friend barreling towards them, sheer panic on his face, as a stampede of zombies pursue him. Even though they turn and run to escape the zombies, their safe haven behind a gate proves ineffective, as more creatures appear on the other side.

Dubin says, “The creative goal was to make the spot as scary as legally possible.” He achieved that by playing with dynamics – the difference between loud and quiet moments, the hallmark of a good horror mix. “In a post-calm world, there are still opportunities to make a great sounding mix if you pick and choose your moments to swing for the fences, balanced with some quiet spots.”

“Borderlands 2″ is an extended live-action trailer for the popular video game, and features a never-ending barrage of action besieging a remote location. As an epic battle ensues, mayhem envelops those trying to survive. Players fight across the whole of Pandora to stop Jack – the brilliant, charismatic, and utterly despicable CEO of the Hyperion Corporation – from awakening an ancient alien evil known only as “the Warrior.”

Levy’s task was to create the sounds of an alien world, and a battle between the four heroes and evil forces attacking them. The live action was shot MOS. Utilizing some sounds from the game as inspiration, Levy created this world literally from the ground up, starting with backgrounds and footsteps all the way through the guns, explosions and sounds for each character’s unique fighting abilities, as well as vehicles, flying weapons and alien creatures. “This was really a pleasure to work on because these characters are so visually exciting, and (director) David Moodie and (producer) Lindsey Kohon gave me a lot of freedom to create and add to the sounds from the game.”

Dubin and Levy are part of an award-winning mixing team at Margarita Mix, which includes Paul Hurtubise and Jimmy Hite, to name a few.

FotoKem’s Senior Vice President Rand Gladden comments, “We are very proud of the award-winning talent and cutting-edge services that Margarita Mix has been providing for over 30 years to the commercial production and advertising industries. Nathan and Jeff are part of dedicated team focused on helping the creative community do great work. We will continue to make the necessary investments to offer the best tools and experts that foster the community’s creativity and usher their projects through the post pipeline in the most efficient ways.”

Bexel Expands 4K and HD Camera Solutions

Company to Showcase New Offerings and Equipment Sales at Cine Gear Expo

Bexel Cine Gear Expo Booth # 98C

(BURBANK, CA) – Bexel, a unit of the Vitec Group’s Services Division and a leading worldwide provider of broadcast services and solutions, has expanded its selection of camera solutions with the purchase of four Sony F55 cameras, a compatible selection of PL-mount Fujinon Cabrio Lenses, as well as 10 Canon EOS C300 cameras. The new camera packages will be on display at Cine Gear Expo (Booth #98C), which runs May 31 through June 1 in Los Angeles.

“The investment in these acquisition formats expands the broad base of Bexel’s available camera packages, and ramps up our turnkey solutions featuring leading products from the chief manufacturers in the industry,” says Bexel CTO Tom Dickinson. “We have been following the market quite closely, as we always do at Bexel, and know that this is the right time to jump into an extended offering that includes a series of PL-mount cameras.”

The Sony F55 cameras will play a crucial role in Bexel’s new 4K solutions, and their capabilities for providing camera packages that augment any major sporting event or live production, while also providing clients with an outstanding HD source for various broadcast television projects and other high-end programs. Bexel will offer a full suite of accessories with the camera, including the AXS-R5 RAW recorder, which enables incredibly precise 16-bit linear RAW in both 2K and 4K.

To complement their new Sony F55 cameras, Bexel has acquired eight Fujinon PL 19-90mm Cabrio lenses (ZK4.7×19) and PL 85-300mm Cabrio lenses (ZK3.5×85). These premier PL-mount lenses provide a film-like look, and are easily scalable to enable full 4K production.
The Cabrio lenses feature a detachable servo drive unit, making it suitable for use as a standard PL lens or an ENG-style lens. Bexel anticipates that the ability to extract sharp, crisp, high-resolution 4K images from a zoom will be especially desirable for live sports broadcasts.

The Canon EOS C300 with the EF-mount provides users with the ability to give a project a variety of looks, as it delivers an effective and cost efficient cinema-style look that is ideal for reality programming, field acquisition, and the enhancing of high-end video production. The Canon’s Super 35mm CMOS Sensor, DIGIC DV III Image Processor and XF Codec augment reality show productions at a very cost effective price point.

Dickinson adds, “We’re very pleased to be expanding the range of our camera lines. The Sony F55 is going to give our clients great shots that look like film, and the ability to be more creative. And on the 4K side of the spectrum, particularly when paired with the Fujinon PL Cabrio lenses, the F55 provides a larger image for 4K production. We also have a whole range of customers who will benefit from the flexibility and affordability the EF-mount Canon EOS C300s offer in augmenting a variety of video productions.”

Also at Cine Gear, Bexel’s Technical Sales & Solutions division (Bexel TSS) will be promoting its portfolio of new and pre-owned gear. Bexel TSS is the leading dealer of professional broadcast equipment sales, boasting a multi-million dollar standing inventory of the latest audio, video and fiber equipment. Bexel TSS recently became a premier reseller of DiGiCo’s broadcast digital audio consoles, and will showcasing the DiGiCo SD 11 at the booth. The company is planning a summer sale at its Burbank headquarters on June 7. Expo attendees can preview a selection of gear that will be available for purchase, as well as inquire about other equipment sales and rental needs.

“Having everything under one roof makes Bexel the go-to resource for rentals and sales,” notes Joyce Bente, director of sales for Bexel TSS. “We are thrilled to be able to provide more resources to our customers, including increased support and the ability to leverage all our products to meet their demands.”

Bexel Launches 4K Solution with Evertz Dreamcatcher

Purchase Adds Cutting-Edge Slow-Motion Replay Technology for Sports and Live Broadcasts

(BURBANK, CA) – Bexel, a unit of the Vitec Group‘s Services Division and a leading worldwide provider of broadcast services and solutions, has purchased two Dreamcatcher systems from Evertz, a leading global manufacturer of broadcast equipment. The acquisition serves as a cornerstone for Bexel’s new 4K solutions, which provide turnkey packages that will be available to augment any major sporting event or live production broadcast.

Dreamcatcher represents the next generation in slow-motion replay technology and offers real-world 4K benefits. The product provides enhanced storytelling capabilities by allowing a production team to capture an event from all angles, without ever missing a moment of action. When 4K cameras are used, Dreamcatcher’s zoom capability lets broadcasters zero in on the action and extract an HD image from a larger 4K frame. This high resolution zoom ability allows broadcasters to enhance the narrative and definitive coverage of close calls at sporting events. When used in conjunction with Evertz’ patent-pending tracking feature, the 4K zoom functionality enables a totally unique replay experience. Dreamcatcher’s proprietary Mosaic function synchronizes multiple angles that can be played out with the press of a single button, allowing a captured event to be shown from brand new perspectives.

Tom Dickinson, CTO of Bexel, comments, “Bexel is a leader in building server systems for a myriad of sporting events, and the addition of Dreamcatcher is a natural expansion of our offerings – and it’s ready for 4K now. Dreamcatcher will be available to our customers as part of a customized solution that will deliver an elegant, streamlined 4K package that can be integrated into a sports production easily, and play a key role in providing 4K replay for live events. Dreamcatcher is a great storytelling tool that employs state-of-the-art technology to allow broadcasters to use 4K to its fullest extent on an HD production.”

Evertz’ Joe Cirincione, VP Sales-U.S. Sports and Entertainment, who has been on over a dozen shoots including the Super Bowl and Daytona 500, says, “Dreamcatcher allows an audience to experience an event like never before, and we know that it will make a perfect addition to Bexel’s offerings. We have enjoyed a long and successful relationship with Bexel, and we are very pleased they have chosen Dreamcatcher.”

“We engage many Evertz products in our systems and solutions,” concludes Dickinson. “This is a logical expansion for Bexel and the Dreamcatcher’s features augment the sports experience in exciting new ways, and for live content replay and multi-screen output for award shows as well as other live events. We’re thrilled to add this to our fleet of solutions.”
