Last.fm and Local Radio Station Hold Festival at Tinley Park

Elk Grove Village, Ill.—The First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre is located in Tinley Park, Illinois, forty minutes south of Chicago. Owned by Live Nation, the First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre is Chicago’s largest outdoor amphitheater with a capacity of approximately 28,000.

Celebrating over 17 years of music history, the First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre typically hosts 25 concerts each summer season. Last.fm, a music service powered entirely by its community of listeners, along with local radio station Q87.7 Piqniq, hosted a 10-act festival at the end of June using Gand Concert Sound (GCS) aka “the NEXO guys” for audio production. Festival line up included the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Bush, Silversun Pickups, AWOLNATION, and Atlas Genius.

GCS brought in a NEXO GEO T system along with assorted audio gear including a new Yamaha CL5 digital audio console and DME64 used as part of the front of house mix rig. Main hangs consisted of 21 GEO T 4805s and three GEO T 2815s per side, seven GEO T 4805s and one GEO T 2815s per side used for out fills, along with 24 CD18s, six PS10R2s for front fills, and eight NX 4X4 amps.

Vincent Casamatta, front of house engineer for AWOLNATION said, “I told GCS tech Adam Rosenthal that the GEO T rig was spec’d, implemented and tech’d perfectly. I had a slamming show, one of the best sounding of this year.”

Nashville’s Riverfront Park Stage Stocked with NEXO STM, Yamaha CLs for the 42nd Annual CMA Music Festival

BUENA PARK, Calif.—This year’s CMA Music Festival took place June 6-9 in Nashville’s Riverfront Park, with Morris Light & Sound (Nashville) handling audio production for the event’s largest outdoor free stage with one of the biggest opening day crowds on record of 44,000. More than 162,000 fans passed through the gates to watch performances at the Chevrolet™ Riverfront Stage, outfitted with the new NEXO STM line array, PS15s, RS18 Ray Subs, 4×4 NXAmps, 45 N-12 line monitors, Yamaha CL5 digital consoles and Rio3224 input/output boxes all connected via a Dante network.

With nearly 50 artists performing, the Chevrolet Riverfront Stage was the hot spot for the daily concerts that took place over five days in downtown Nashville. The stage kicked off on Wednesday with the Block Party concert featuring headliner, Joe Diffie. Thursday was a full day of performances that began with a high energy show from CMA Award-winning recording artist Sara Evans followed by performances from Keith Anderson, Greg Bates, Blackberry Smoke, Craig Campbell, Mark Chesnutt, Brett Eldredge, Rachel Farley, Tyler Farr, Colt Ford, Gloriana, The Grascals, Steve Holy, Casey James, Kristen Kelly, Aaron Lewis, Lonestar, Love and Theft, Dustin Lynch, Jo Dee Messina, Ronnie Milsap, Craig Morgan, David Nail, Joe Nichols, Jerrod Niemann, Paslay, Maggie Rose, Corey Smith, Tate Stevens, Sunny Sweeney, Phil Vassar, Chuck Wicks, Gretchen Wilson, and Darryl Worley.

Eric Elwell mixed front of house for Joe Nichols and said, “I was really looking forward to an opportunity to drive the new NEXO STM rig. My good friends, David Haskell and John Mills at Morris Light & Sound, have ears I trust implicitly, and I’ve always had fantastic experiences with NEXO, so when they showed me the rig and the design behind it, I couldn’t wait to mix on it. Wow! It’s detailed, but not in a hard or hyped-kind of way. It felt like an F1 racecar… just so responsive. I worked there on the second day at the River Stage, and by then the Yamaha/NEXO team really had the rig singing. It was fantastic, with rich warmth and detail all the way to the top of the hill! Very hi-fi, which I love.”

“I was very impressed with the consistency of the definition of all the vocals, even with all the different engineers that mixed over the course of the four days,” states David Haskell, President, Morris Light & Sound.

Elwell also said he used the new Yamaha CL5 digital console once before, subbing for a friend on a tour last fall. “I was impressed then by the purity and clarity. The mic pre’s are fantastic, and the plug-ins give you everything you need to add ‘a little something’ extra. On the Joe Nichols mix for CMA Fest, I got to use the Rupert Neve Design Portico 5043 compressor across the stereo buss just to add that final “glue” to the mix. The sounds of the plug-ins are just like the real hardware I’ve used in the studio… glorious!”

Russell Fischer, freelance monitor and FOH engineer who has mixed front of house for Taylor Swift, The Mavericks and Toby Keith, to name a few, mixed monitors for several different bands at the Chevrolet Riverfront Stage, said he liked working on the Yamaha CL5 in this large festival situation. “I like the flexibility and ease of use of the Custom Fader Banks; it made for very quick navigation of critical inputs during the festival at the monitor mix position. Also, I found the Premium Rack devices very useful.”

Yamaha Training Sessions Set for Phoenix and California

Gand Helps River Edge Park Kick Off Opening Concert Season

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Along the banks of the Fox River in Aurora, Illinois, the new River Edge Park represents a strong collaborative effort between the public and private sectors, including businesses, environmental advocates, developers, and community members. The 30-acre park has a 10-acre Music Garden, with its John C. Dunham venue seating 8,500 including the lawn area. At a cost of 13.2 million dollars, the city of Aurora has taken a huge step in upgrading a former rust belt industrial area and turning it into the place to go for music during the summer months.

To kick off its first season, Gand Concert Sound (GCS) Elk Grove Village IL, aka “the NEXO guys” provided a NEXO Geo T sound system along with Yamaha PM5D-RH and M7CL-48 consoles for the opening weekend. The NEXO rig included 24 GEO T speakers, 12 CD-18 subs, plus PS-15 monitors and Alpha side fills powered by NX 4×4 amps. Entertainment included Buddy Guy, Dr. John, JJ Grey & Mofro, Tommy Castro, Robert Randolph Family Band, and the Stone Foxes for the weekend’s “Blues on the Fox” Festival.

GCS President, Gary Gand said, “It was a great way to start off our outdoor summer season here in the Midwest. BBQ, beer, and Buddy Guy are about as good as it can get under a star-filled sky by the Fox River.”

Audience comments overheard by crew covered the gamut from “I’m all the way in the back, and it sounds great,” to “I’m right in front and it sounds great,” showing off the even coverage provided by the NEXO speakers and GeoSoft plotting software.

Florida swamp rocker JJ Grey, the first artist to play on the park’s stage, had never been to Aurora before the park’s opening night, and called it “beautiful” saying the venue’s sound system, equipment procedures, and crowd made a great impression. Grey announced to the audience, “They killed it.” during his 90-minute set, referring to the new park.

Yamaha CL5 Struts Its Stuff with Charbonneau on The Offspring Live Recording

BUENA PARK, Calif.— The Offspring is an American punk rock band from Orange County, California, formed in 1984. Recently, the band asked engineer Ian Charbonneau to record and mix an upcoming web release. The recording took place in Warsaw, Poland at the Orange Warsaw Festival held at Narodowy Stadium. Charbonneau has worked with the band for the past five years, recording and mixing live TV, Webcast or Radio broadcast they may do Internationally. His last name may sound familiar, as he is the son of LeMobile Remote Recording Studio owner, and mix engineer, Guy Charbonneau. The younger Charbonneau also works on LeMobile’s Le-Fly-Pak system that utilizes a Yamaha DM2000 digital audio console for live broadcast mixing.

“Doing live projects on the road is always a lot of fun and can be very challenging, not necessarily knowing which console and set up I will have to work with. It is always different. A big part of the challenge comes from the very little prepping time and often without any sound check, you just got to nail it”, states the younger Charbonneau. “In the last few years, I’ve expended my own business in consulting, recording and mixing for artists, managements and labels when doing live TV, webcast or broadcast appearances around the globe. It gives both artists and production teams great assurance that someone is looking out for them. As most know, when doing live projects, there’s only one chance of getting things right. I was excited when I found out for this particular project, I would have the opportunity to use the new Yamaha CL5 digital audio console.”

The Poland set up consisted of two consoles, the CL5 used as the main console and a Yamaha DM2000 for backup purposes, all recorded via Nuendo Live. “I chose to try out the new CL5 even though I’m very familiar with the DM2000. I was quite pleased with how easy it was to get around this console,” says Charbonneau. “Very simple and logical layout, I find some digital console today seem to have lost their logic with too many places to do the same things, busy layouts or too many menus and layers like trying to please everyone. It is often too easy to get lost or make mistakes. The CL5 seemed to have been very well thought out.

As for sound, Charbonneau said he was also happy with what he heard. “It was really responsive; I learned over the years working with our DM2000 and other digital consoles that you often have to exaggerate a little when EQing and compressing. The CL5 seemed more natural. I was also impressed on the integration of Nuendo Live; it worked flawlessly. The Dante networking and Rio rack did great. I would be curious to try a CL5 with Le Mobile’s Fly-Pak. Great job on the new console, Yamaha!”

ACIR Professional Supports Forgotten Veterans at VetRock

Egg Harbor Township, N.J.—Bader Field, Atlantic City was the site for the first VetRock concert, held in honor of those forgotten that served in the Vietnam War. Held the first Saturday in June, the concert featured memorable bands from the 70s including headliners Mark Farner from Grand Funk Railroad, Mitch Rider, the Buckinghams, the Traamps, Soul Survivors, as well as local area bands. Special guest speaker was Lt. Oliver North with Joe Piscopo acting as the event’s emcee. The day’s festivities lasted every bit of 12 hours to tribute to Vietnam Vets; Local Vietnam Veteran organizations will receive 100% of profits from tickets and t-shirts sold that commemorate the day.

The main sound system was provided by ACIR Professional (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) and included the company’s new d&b Audiotechnik J rig, configured with 16 boxes of J8s, four J12s, two Q7 line arrays that were used for front fills, and 20 B2 subs configured in a “sub array” to achieve even coverage of the entire listening area. A Yamaha CL5 and two Rio3224-D remote i/o racks was used at front of house, a Yamaha PM5D-RH was used for monitors, along with Yamaha P7000 amps. A plethora of mics included Shure, AKG, Sennheiser, EV, A-T, Countryman, along with Shure and Sennheiser wireless systems. ACIR also provided, lighting, backline, staging, rigging, and supervised power, video, and barricade installation.

“The Yamaha CL console was excellent from a festival standpoint, and connectivity of the Rio rack with AES inputs digitally was a big plus,” states ACIR co-owner and front of house engineer for the event, John Grasso. “From all accounts, the entire rig sounded pristine, especially our new d&b J rig. It was an honor to be included in this event in remembrance of our Vietnam Vets.”

This was my first experience as a TD for a show of this size so I needed to hire a company who would cover all production elements,” states Sam Schwartz. “From staging to audio, lighting, video, and band gear, ACIR’s great crew worked flawlessly with our IATSE Local #77. I received a number of complements on the new d&b J8 audio rig and its massive sound, It filled our 10 acres of seating area with no sweat. Being responsible for the entire production, you can’t get a better production company than ACIR Professional. They moved quickly to address all the changes and additions that were presented along the way. They made me look very good.

ACIR co-owner, Ed DiBona chose a Yamaha PM5D-RH to mix monitors. “I chose the PM5D for monitors because I needed a console that could handle a large number of mixes, both wedges and in-ear monitors, with a mixture of mono and stereo outputs. The exceptional sound quality and ability to quickly make changes and mix on the fly made the 5D the only choice for this fast-paced, high- profile show. The desk performed flawlessly all day. The promoter was extremely happy with the entire sound system, and we received many compliments from performers.”

NEXO STM Rocks the Range

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio was the place and mid-May was the date of this year’s Rock On The Range Festival, marking the seventh annual rock festival expanded to three-days this year due to its success and interest by bands to be part of the line up.

Once again, Logic Systems Sound and Lighting of St. Louis handled audio and lighting production for the 105,000+ concertgoers treated to music over three stages by Love & Death, Hollywood Undead, Buckcherry, Cheap Trick, Korn, Pop Evil, All That Remains, Halestorm, Papa Roach, Three Days Grace, Smashing Pumpkins, Sevendust, Bush, Alice In Chains and Soundgarden, to name a few.

The crowd was treated to superb sound as this year Logic Systems brought in the new NEXO STM line array to the main stage that consisted of 36 STM M46 main cabinets, 36 B112 bass cabinets, 36 S118 subs, 10 NUAR racks, 12 GEO-Ts, and 12 CD-18s. A Yamaha PM5D-RH was used as the primary monitor console for the main stage.

“The overall response to the new NEXO STM system by guest engineers was very good,” states Chip Self, President, Logic Systems Sound and Lighting. “Everyone was duly impressed by the sound quality and the overall SPL achieved with so few boxes. The rigging on the STM is exceptional, and very fast. We were able to fly each side of the main PA with just four crew in less than 20 minutes!”

In related Logic Systems news, the company brought in their NEXO GEO T rig for the Carolina Rebellion Festival that took place in the beginning of May at the Rock City Campground located at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.

New Hope Baptist Church Goes Digital with Yamaha CL1: Adds to DSR Arsenal

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J.—Initially opening in 1941, the 250-seat contemporary-style New Hope Baptist Church in Atlantic City, New Jersey recently wanted to switch their analog mixer out for a digital mixer and chose a Yamaha CL1 equipped with a Rio3224-D input/output box. ACIR Professional (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) was responsible for the installation and at the same time, upgraded their current DSR speaker system. In 2012, the church added a few Yamaha DSRs and DSR subs, and craving for even more coverage, they just added two DSR115s, four DXR12s, and two more DSR118 subs.

“The church fell in love with the CL1,” states Bobby Harper, Vice President/Sales, ACIR. “They wanted to be able to easily record to multi-track and utilize the Dante networking functions.” Harper also said the church staff is thrilled with the DSR and DXR coverage (the DSRs are flown).

“Our new Yamaha speakers gives us an overall bigger, but controlled sound,” states Minister John W. Howard, Jr., Director of Worship and Arts. “Bands and groups from outside of our church are now renting our space because of our new sound system! The recording capabilities and functionality of the Yamaha CL1 is priceless and easy to use. Our audio staff loves the new system and has learned the CL1 very easily. We work with a number of bands and gospel groups, so the console’s ability to save scenes, saves a lot of work. I would recommend our Yamaha system to anyone.” Minister Howard noted that on any given Sunday, there are 2-3 musicians and 9-20 in the choir.

Wirebox Media Provides Production Services for Auburn University Last Roll: NEXO System Plays Key ‘Role’

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Wirebox Media of Smyrna, GA was selected by Auburn University to provide production services for the Auburn Oaks Celebration at Toomer’s Corner that included a block party and “One Last Roll” of the historic oak trees. The event took place in late April just after a record-setting attendance at the spring football game. The attendance at Jordan-Hare Stadium was over 83,400, and the downtown celebration was thought to be very close to that number. Auburn Oaks rolling has been a tradition for nearly 80 years; the trees are then replaced by live oaks.

The audio production system selected by Wirebox Media was centered around a NEXO GEO S 12 loudspeaker system and NEXO PS15R2 and PS10R2 monitors. “The NEXO system is consistently predictable, and sound fantastic,” states Tim Harrigan, Owner, Wirebox Media. “This job, in particular, proved the ease of use for the GEO S12 Series as we didn’t even have time to tune the system before the show and made very few adjustments in the first few minutes.” A total of 32 NEXO GeoS12 cabinets were configured as 10 per side for main hangs with an additional 6 per side for out fills, all powered by 8 4×4 NXAMPs.

“Staging a block party in three hours was not that simple,” says Harrigan. The complexity of the event snow-balled in the ten days Wirebox had to prep for the event that involved a nationally attended press conference with VIP’s from AU and the city, highlighted by a kabuki drop for the new architectural plans for the area, a spirit rally headed by the AU Band, and the event finale featuring a concert by local band Kidd Blue.

“Design and planning was key as the day was really four separate events: load-in/setup, press conference, spirit rally, and concert,” Harrigan notes. “This was all compounded by the three-hour setup time and the massive crowd. We could not have successfully completed this without a stellar crew, great clients and the cooperation of the City of Auburn, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Auburn Police Department.”

New NEXO STM Line Array and Yamaha Consoles Put Finishing Touch on Funshine Festival

TAMPA—More than 30 acts performed over five musical stages during Funshine Fest, held May 3-5 on the fairgrounds of Florida State in Tampa with an attendance of 20,000. Main stage artists included Train, the Smashing Pumpkins, REO Speedwagon, Styx, the Wallflowers, Cheap Trick, New Found Glory, Gary Allen, and Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional.

ESI Audio of Tampa provided audio production, and this year, the new NEXO STM was used as the Live Nation Amphitheatre main stage line array. Company President, Erick Celeiro, functioned as FOH tech and Ozzy Giron acted as monitor tech on the rig. The system consisted of 15 M46 per side flown, 15 B112 per side flown, 32 S118 subs ground stacked, 10 NUAR racks that included 2x 4×4 NXAmps, and four M46s stacked on S118 subs for front fills. The entire system was running from front of house via the Dante network to the amp racks. A Yamaha PM5D was at the front of house mix position.

About the new STM system, Live Nation Amphitheatre production manager Andy Martinez said, ” I have seen many systems come in and out of here, and never had a system that rigs and flies so easy and sounds amazing.” And, REO front of house engineer, Neil Schaefer, added, “I had the pleasure of using the NEXO STM, and having had plenty of time in front of NEXO rigs over the years, my expectations were high. The STM PA is very tidy with clever rigging. Most important, it sounded very good. Smooth, powerful, and responsive; a very nice rig indeed!”

STM is unique in that it is the first vertical array system to offer scalable LF, making it easy to add extra bass cabinets for increased power and headroom, without introducing unwanted phase anomalies.

The outdoor Pavilion Stage used a NEXO GEO T line array along with a Yamaha CL5 at front of house used by mix engineer Jan Javier, with a CL1 at monitors for engineer Rob “DH” Durkee. “I felt very comfortable taking the CL out for the three-day festival with multiple bands, some with their own engineers, some without,” states Javier. The CL screen is like the difference between a regular VHS tape and a Blue-Ray DVD. I was using AES outs all the way to the amps. The system sounded great, the desk was very easy to use from the first day. The next day, I put the Premium Rack’s Portico Compressor in stereo in the left and right, and what a difference, just passing through the unit; smooth and warm become the words to best describe the sound. I used the DCAs, as I am used to mixing that way. Assignments are very easy, and finding my way around the desk is simple and very intuitive.”

“The guest engineers were amazed at the sound of the desk and how friendly it is, notes Javier. All who used it said they would tour with it.” Javier said they ran the stage rack onstage, and ran a cat6 snake out. He also said he noticed the pre-amps are much more responsive and a lot warmer out of the box. The Pavilion Stage hosted Lone Bellow, Tonic, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, and Dead Confederates. “They all loved the sound.”

The Concourse Stage housed a Yamaha CL1 at front of house with mixing by Bryan Rogers and Justin Lenards. An LS9 was used for monitors. Rogers said the CL1 was “like butter… smooth and creamy.” Lenards who mixed FOH and Monitors said “Love it, great little console.”
