Peltrix Aids in Rebirth of Historic Howard Theater with Yamaha Consoles

BUENA PARK, Calif.—For decades, The Howard Theater was more than a theater; it was an institution, a place where performers of color could get a foothold in the profession, where the community could listen to the sounds and power of the black musician. Sadly neglected since the early 1980s, today the theater is enjoying a rebirth and a entering a new era in its long and prestigious history.

As part of its rebirth, contracting firm Peltrix (New York) installed two Yamaha PM5D-RH digital consoles, one at front of house and one at the monitor position. The theater, which seats 600 and houses 1,000 for standing-room only events, hosts high-caliber music performances as well as corporate and political events, given its proximity to the Capitol and its adjacent location to Howard University.

Peltrix owner, Amit Peleg, was brought in to replace another designer in August 2009. The building design plans were at 30% completion at the time but it was early enough to allow Peltrix to do what was needed in the design stage. It took two and a half years from the point Peltrix was brought in to completion of the theater’s overhaul. In addition to the design, the Company was responsible for the integration and installation of the AV system along with assisting the new owners to hire and train production staff.

“We were recommended by the Bensusan Group who are the operators of the Howard Theater, since we’d worked for them at other venues in the past, such as the Blue Note and BB King’s in New York, states Peleg. Since we are very familiar with their type of business and style of operation, it made communication with the Howard Theater Restoration developers easier.“

Peleg said the building was completely gutted, and the outer walls were supported externally while a basement was dug and new foundation was put in. This allowed Peltrix to fit a completely modern system into a historical building that originally was never meant for amplified music. “I actually set the requirements which were based on my experience working with the operators on their other venues,” says Peleg.

The philosophy behind this installation, Peleg said, was to put in a system that is rider-friendly and flexible since the space is used for many styles and genres of music along with private parties and corporate events. “We needed a system that could accommodate anything thrown at it without the need for modifications, augmentation or replacement of gear on a per-show basis, he notes. We went the extra mile to design a very flexible wiring scheme that allows patching of any kind of signal anywhere in the building and everywhere on stage along with preparation for expansion for a recording studio planned in the near future. The Yamaha PM5D-RH consoles were the most logical fit for this kind of setup. We are running the consoles at 96k using a Big Ben external clock that gives us superior sound quality. Signal path is all AES/96k from the console to the DSP and through to the amps.”

In addition to the Yamaha consoles, Peltrix installed a JBL speaker system and a new video system consisting of Da-Lite projection screens, Samsung and Sharp LCDs, Sanyo projectors, Vaddio cameras, and an Elation LED screen.

Blossom’s in Full Bloom with NEXO GEO S12 System

The Blossom Music Center is an amphitheatre located in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio within the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Owned by The Cleveland Orchestra’s governing organization, Musical Arts Association in Cleveland, and managed by Live Nation, the pavilion seats 5,700 people, with space for about 13,500 more on the lawn. It is the summer home of The Cleveland Orchestra, performing its annual Blossom Festival at the amphitheatre. The site’s natural setting, sloping slate roof, and the area’s natural wooded surroundings distinguish it from other contemporary amphitheatres. The venue operates May through October.

The venue is also host to a full summer schedule of popular music acts and symphonic performances. This year, the venue plays host to Drake, Lady Antebellum, Radiohead, Dave Matthews Band, 2012 Country Megaticket Tour, Beach Boys Reunion Tour, Phish, 2012 Vans Warped Tour, Barry Manilow, just to name a few.

The facility, originally designed by architect Peter van Dijk, underwent a $17 million renovation in 2003; however, NAC Technologies in Cleveland was brought in to design a sound system to replace the aging lawn system. “Musical Arts is a non-profit organization so we had a tight budget and needed to have a system that would deliver the best bang for the buck,” states Rick Galbraith, senior audio engineer, NAC Technologies. With assistance from NEXO independent rep firm, R. Joseph Group, a 10-box NEXO GEO S12 line array system, supplemented with three NEXO Alpha speakers for fill zones, all powered by multiple 4×4 NXAmps, was installed.

“The new system had to be able to take care of the needs of the Orchestra and cater to Live Nation events,” says Galbraith. NAC has a long history with NEXO. “NEXO is always a sure thing. We have used the NEXO GEO systems in four of the five theaters at Playhouse Square, and installed a 64-box GEO S12 system in the Palace Theater that most Broadway shows use instead of what they are carrying.”

Prior to the season opening, NAC installed 48 NEXO Geo S12 cabinets in the ten existing sound bays. The bays are arranged in an arch, are about 35’ apart and vary in height from 19’ on the ends to 29’ in the middle. The longest part of the lawn with the highest bays, has two hangs of five GEO S1210 and one S1230, with the next bay of 4/1, then 3/1, then a bay of three S1230s in a horizontal configuration and mirrored on the other side. The system is powered by all NEXO 4×4 NXAMPs.

For time alignment and EQ, NAC installed a Yamaha DME64 to straighten out the bays and give the visiting engineers their own delay device. Last year NAC installed three NEXO Alpha full range cabinets per side on a pole system on the outside of the pavilion. Since the system must function for both the orchestra concerts and rock shows, the DME allows scene storage for any and all events.
For orchestra concerts, NAC also provides a 40-box NEXO GEO S8 LCR system, PS10 and PS15 floor monitors, and Yamaha M7CL digital consoles.

“I’ve always thought for years the only thing keeping Blossom from being an absolutely perfect venue (although it was always still my favorite) was the lack of a decent lawn sound system,” notes Bill Horschke, from sister Live Nation venue, Nautica. “I was very pleasantly surprised when attending a DMB concert to see a nice NEXO rig installed for the lawn, thus completing my jealousy from this nature loving concrete and steel veteran. Kudos to all who made the new system happen. It is very, very cool. Crank it up, and rock them trees!”

Sound Works Productions Supports Northwestern’s PhilFest

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Big Daddy Love and Paper Thick Walls performed at the Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois) 2012 Philfest held in mid-May. The annual bluegrass concert, co-sponsored by A&O Productions and Students for Ecological and Environmental Development (SEED), is held in memory of Phil Semmer, a SEED member who passed away while studying abroad. The event raises money for the Rocky Mountain Institute; an organization that researches more effective use of resources and that Semmer aspired to join after graduation.

Sound Works Productions of Frankfort, Illinois, not only staffed the event (Eric Lindholm at Front of House, Daniel Nickleski at Monitors and Kevin Flasza as Stage Tech), but also provided a NEXO GEO S line array for the main PA along with a Yamaha M7CL-48 digital console for FOH and LS9-32 for monitors.

The NEXO GEO S12 was configured as eight GEO S1210s, two GEO S1230s for mains, two PS10s used for front fills, four RS18 Ray Subs, and three 4×4 NXAmps.

“Every time our GEO S12 rig goes out it never ceases to amaze our clients,” says Nickleski. “The versatility, ease of set up, and the consistent sound quality are what keeps our clients coming back.”

ACIR Professional Supports Mother’s Day Music Festival

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, New Jersey—Philadelphia’s Patti LaBelle, was part of the 3rd annual Mothers Day Music Festival at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City held on Mother’s Day. The concert also featured Johnny Gill and Charlie Wilson. The historic Boardwalk Hall, which seats close to 15,000, has played host to a high profile list entertainers and sporting events throughout its 81-year history.

LaBelle’s success came early with Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles and then, in the seventies, with LaBelle who brought the hit ‘Lady Marmalade.’ LaBelle went on to have a huge success as a solo artist with songs such as ‘On My Own,’ ‘If Only You Knew,’ ‘If You Asked Me To,’ and ‘New Attitude.’

ACIR Professional (Egg Harbor Township) provided the entire audio rig and backline for the concert including two Yamaha PM5D digital audio consoles for front of house and monitors, with FOH manned by ACIR co-owner, Ed DiBona.
“I prefer the Yamaha PM5D because of excellent sound quality, ease of use, and unrivaled reliability,” says DiBona.

The company supplied a d&b line array, d&b Q sub for side fills, Worx Audio speakers for side PA, a plethora of microphones including Sennheiser, Shure, AKG, AudioTechnica, a Shure wireless system, and Sennheiser in-ear monitor system.

Harley Davidson Showroom Transforms and Puts New Life Into Church with NEXO System

BUENA PARK, Calif.—When LifePointe Christian Church in Elk Grove, California was looking for a sound system to compliment their new location, a converted Harley Davidson showroom, they turned to the expertise of CCI of Olympia, Washington. Project manager, David McLain, recommended a NEXO PS15 system for the 400-seat church that consists of three PS15s, one CD18 and a 4×4 NXAMP.

“Pastor Chris Delfs sought out a new location where they would not only own their space but could create a unique, new culture,” states McLain. “They weren’t looking for a NEXO system per se, but were looking for good advice.” At only 60’ deep, with less than 20’ of trim, a line array would not have been the best tool, whereas, the asymmetrical horn pattern of a PS15 reaches the back rows with ease.”

“David actually discouraged a line array approach in this case, and if you look at how much the HVAC and lighting impacts the trim height, the PS solution was much better,” notes Steve Armstrong, PROS Inc., independent rep firm for NEXO.

“I’d been hearing a lot of talk about NEXO speakers over the past few years,” and have listened to various models and I was impressed enough to recommend them for a couple of rooms, particularly given the outstanding support I’ve been receiving from Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems,” says McLain. I didn’t really know the extent of the NEXO lineup until I had opportunity to listen critically and extensively to their whole selection of speakers at a demo at the Cerritos Performing Arts Center in California. The Cerritos Center is an awesome building. We used their beautiful main room to try out the NEXO speakers. I spent the first demo day designing speaker systems for rooms using various software, and I liked the way the NEXO speakers worked in the planning, and also liked what I saw in the computer models. The NS-1 software was easy to work with, so I imported some real-world rooms, like LifePointe, that I’d been working on. It appeared the NEXO PS Series would provide excellent coverage.”

“I have to admit, there’s a fair bit of skeptic in me,” McLain says. “A box that promises a rectangular coverage pattern had better do more than just advertise well! It needs to offer an actual rectangular coverage pattern. And more importantly, it needs to sound good! In the next day’s listening tests, I measured 112 dB at the back of the listening room, and I have to say, it sure didn’t feel like 112 dB. In fact, it didn’t sound like a PA playing. It sounded like a woman was right there singing to me. Yamaha brought in a live jazz drummer and they just sounded louder, like there was no PA in between. Even the little NEXO PS8 two-way sounded way bigger than its small size. And, all of the subwoofers for the line arrays – which were shaking my pant legs at 100’ – are cardioid subs. Even during the “fairly loud” cuts (think aggressive Sunday morning volume), we could easily hold a conversation on the stage behind the subwoofers.”

Armstrong added that Pastor Delfs was appreciative of CCI’s insistence on NEXO. “David has provided LifePointe with five previous systems and each one has progressed in terms of quality and capabilities.”

“Every Sunday, one of our congregation members emotes about the system, which is so significant to my passion to lead people to a better way, that I’m thrilled beyond words,” states Pastor Delfs. “I love the NEXO sound system. David and CCI hit it out of the ballpark.”

Second Location for Second City Opens in Chi-Town

BUENA PARK, Calif.— Originally making its debut in 1959, and recently celebrating its 50th birthday, the legendary Second City Comedy Theatre has opened the UP Comedy Club, a new theatre in the Piper’s Alley area of Chicago. With resident stages in Chicago, Toronto, and Touring Ensembles, Second City entertains over 1,000,000 guests each year. It was the training ground for a host of famous alumni including John Belushi, Mike Myers, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, John Candy, Catherine O’Hara, Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, to name a few. The UP space, which is adjacent to the original, has been totally revamped. It seats 385 and features the best in headline stand-up comedy with a variety of original full-length shows and Improv revues created by Second City Theatricals. Performances occur seven nights per week.

The new audio system includes a Yamaha LS9-32 digital console and NEXO PS8 speakers. “When we initially were brought in, we were asked to make recommendations to the then General Manager from Second City’s Toronto facility,” says Gand. “The main criteria were to use the smallest speakers so that they would be essentially invisible to the audience. In the beginning, the general manager thought that analog mixing with a big rack of outboard gear was the way to go. Part way through the project, Jeremy Smith, who has been with Second City since 2002 as stage manager for their touring company, was brought into the fold. He understood that the Yamaha LS9-32 digital console we had presented was the way to go. The console allowed for a smaller equipment footprint in the front of house booth and the capability of storing presets for every show, adding instant repeatability from rehearsal to performance.”

“A 36″ deep duct running left to right through the center of the room made for a unique challenge,” notes Gand. “This was tackled by installing four NEXO PS8U speakers over the stage and an additional pair on the back side of the duct which are delayed. Rigging was also a challenge to locate the PS8′s where they would do what the GEOSOFT software promised. Utilizing NEXO’s own proprietary rigging hardware allowed us to aim cabinets to match the software recommendations.” Two LS400 subwoofers were installed along with two NEXO NXAMP 4×1 amplifiers.

“Typically, Second City is known for ensemble comedy ala Saturday Night Live rather than individual stand-up performers like most comedy clubs,” states Gary Gand, President, Gand Sound Installations. “UP was developed as a new hybrid performance venue with an eclectic blend of comedy. You can count on a ‘topical’ show any night of the week. If it was in the news today, good chance it will be onstage at Second City that night, especially if it has to do with local politics. The menu, for you Bears super fans, includes a Vienna sausage trio served alongside an Italian beef sandwich, Lou Malnati’s deep dish pizza, and Eli’s cheesecake.”

The Up Comedy Club will host Rhys Darby (half of HBO’s Flight of the Conchords musical comedy duo) and Mitch Fatel from the late night TV circuit, John Hodgman, Gary Owen, and Robert Kelly over the next several months.

Gand Sound Installations (GSI) of Glenview, Illinois, who was referred to Second City by the Paramount Arts Center in Aurora, Illinois (where GSI recently installed a NEXO GEO S12 line array) was tapped in the spring of 2011 for the audio installation of the new comedy club. Completed at the end of 2011, architects on the project were Barker/Nester Architecture + Design of Skokie, Illinois.
