Yamaha CL Console Lights Up Orion Festival

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Bader Field in Atlantic City over a recent summer weekend was the site for the Orion Music + More Festival featuring Metallica on the main stage along with 30+ bands and over 33,000 in attendance on each of the two-days.

ACIR Professional (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) provided the new Yamaha CL5 Digital Console and two Yamaha PM5Ds for the Damage Inc stage along with ten Yamaha TX3n amps for monitors. The Damage Inc stage featured performances by Suicidal Tendencies, Sepultura, The Black Dahlia Murder, Torche, Letlive, Red Fang, Kyng, Landine Marathon, Black Tusk, and Thy Will Be Done. The front of house engineers for the acts got their mixing hands on the new CL console, with Yamaha and ACIR staff on hand to answer any questions.

“Having already been familiar with the Yamaha PM5D, the CL was a breeze to use,” states Matthew (Woody) Woods, front of house engineer for The Black Dahlia Murder. “From the layout, navigation, display and touch screen, the CL makes it much easier to adjust your mix.”

“The CL5 was so quick in getting my mix where it needed to be thanks to the user defined knobs and touch screen capabilities,” says front of house engineer for Red Fang, Adam Pike. “The console was truly put to the test at the Festival where we had to do line checks through headphones. I had no idea what it was going to sound like when we went live through the mains. By the end of the first song, I was already shaping with the Rupert Neve Designs Portico 5043 and 5033 in the Yamaha CL; I felt so spoiled!”

ACIR Professional also provided a Yamaha LS9-32 with eight Yamaha DSR 15 speakers and eight DSR subs for Rob Trujillo, the bass player of Metallica, for use on the Vans stage.

“Front of house engineers were pretty enthusiastic about using the new Yamaha CL5 at the Damaged Inc stage, which is a testament to the Yamaha familiarity found throughout the company’s digital console series,” states John Grasso, co-owner of ACIR Professional and systems engineer for the Damage Inc stage. “We wanted to provide an opportunity for the festival engineers to gain the benefit of being the first in our market to work on the console, and we believe it was immensely successful for us, the engineers, and Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems.”

Youth Group Experiences Ultimate Yamaha and NEXO Audio System Thanks to Gand Concert Sound

BUENA PARK, Calif.—The tri-annual gathering of the Evangelical Lutheran Youth of America (ELCA) took place in late July at the Mercedes-Benz Super Dome in New Orleans, and the 35,000 plus teenage attendees once again were treated to praise activities, theatrical and musical performances, and the ultimate Yamaha and NEXO audio system thanks to the production services of Gand Concert Sound (GCS) of Glenview, Illinois, aka “the NEXO guys”. Christian acts including Rhema Soul, Lost and Found, Jimmy Buffet guitarist Peter Mayer, and GRAMMY® winners Switchfoot performed.

For its fourth time supporting the youth event, Gand provided a flown system comprising 60 NEXO GEO T speakers, 18 GEO S12, eight RS18 Ray Subs and 30 ground-stacked CD18 subs. Fifteen NEXO 4×4 amps were utilized to power dozens of NEXO PS15 and PS10s used for stage monitors and front fills, and PS8s used for under balcony delay speakers, as well as S12s and RS18’s.

“This was the first time the event was mixed totally digital from front of house to a pair of Yamaha M7CLs used for monitors on the A and B stages,” states Gary Gand, President, Gand Concert Sound. “A Yamaha LS9-16 was used for audio to video feeds to the Internet and an LS9-32 was put in place for the audience aux island stage. The use of all digital consoles allowed national acts such as Switchfoot, who flew from Seattle to New Orleans to make the show, call up their previous shows with GCS and get right down to business.”

Additionally, GCS used the new Rupert Neve Designs Portico 5045 processor developed specifically for Yamaha on specialty mics for added clarity. “We were able to achieve a great sound in one of the USA’s largest venues,” states front of house engineer Adam Rosenthal.

Gand bought their first large NEXO GEO T system in 2003 for an ELCA event held at the Georgia Dome. Since that time, they have continued to expand their inventory as NEXO has brought out more new products while they continue to add to their GEO T stock. “NEXO is constantly updating their software to improve the performance of the gear,” Gand says. “Now we have the integrated 4X4 amp that will work with every NEXO speaker in any combination enabling us to configure amps onsite for arrays, monitors, subs, in any combination and for any model.”

In addition to the July ELCA mega event, GCS also supplied audio production for the Pitchfork Fest in Chicago and dozens of other events around the Midwest.

BeatleShow! Vegas FOHE Gets By With a Little Help from a Yamaha PM5D

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Critics say BeatleShow! at the Saxe Theater in the Planet Hollywood Resort Casino is the closest you can get to a real Beatles concert. Producers of BeatleShow! spared no expense incorporating every meticulous detail from dramatic costume changes to sound and stage lighting, creating the most authentic Beatles experience today.

Sound choice for front of house mixing producer/engineer Mick McCoy, is a Yamaha PM5D digital mixing console. “I’ve been using the 5D since it came out,” states McCoy. “I was on the team that built Disney’s Hyperion Theater at Disneyland as the A1, and we were on the initial beta-test team for the PM1D. What an opportunity to get in on the ground floor of the whole Yamaha digital platform.”

As far as the Yamaha digital line, McCoy sights the two biggest features are recall-ability and reliability. “I’ve opened up for The Who at Carnegie Hall with an O1V96 that I brought on a plane in a suitcase. For 15 years, I have been all over the world producing BeatleShow! with Yamaha consoles, and they just don’t fail. It’s also nice to walk into a ballroom in Dubai and see your old friend the 5D sitting there when you’ve got a show to do in a few hours. Over the last ten years, the PM5D has probably been the most rider-friendly console on the market. In my Fabbey Road Studios in Orange County, I have a Yamaha DM2000.”

“The integration of Logic and a dedicated I-Mac show control is something I’ve worked on for about two years,” says McCoy. “Larry Hopkins, a musical and tech guru from Technicolor in LA, really showed me the possibilities for inexpensive automation. For BeatleShow! I use a Motu D/A to run multiple streams of audio, including a tempo map and cues to musicians, all getting stereo in-ear mixes from the PM5D, and stage monitors that are active terraced versions of the house mix—a very easy and cool 5D trick. In addition, a “tech track” or stage manager in a box connects to Clearcom to direct technicians on scenic moves and cues. MIDI output also controls scene changes on the Yamaha PM5D, and all the lighting cues that are generated in a Hog3 PC, as well as keyboard and guitar patches.

Both projection and the video walls are also driven from Logic through Canopus D/A converter boxes. After working with Yamaha engineers from Japan, it is exciting to see the Steinberg compatibility heading in this direction; it makes for an extremely automated and reliable “booked show”, something that my days with Disney taught me to value.”

Out of hundreds of cues for the show, there are only four scene changes on the Yamaha PM5D that need to be triggered manually, and this is done via a switchbox I built for just a few dollars to address the GPI port on the console. It enables me and other engineers to be out of the booth and “in the field” where our ears should be. A PC laptop with Yamaha Studio Manager running on it is wirelessly connected through an inexpensive router, so tweaking audio from the house is possible, including ancillary systems like front fills and monitors. For the price of a cheap laptop and router, an engineer can mix from anywhere in the room.” McCoy said he couldn’t imagine anyone not taking advantage of this inexpensive freedom. A keyboard Blue Toothing to the I-Mac completes mobility and provides a remote “GO” button for the Logic software.

“David Saxe who owns the theater has really given me the latitude to create a great mixing environment. I returned the favor by helping him to create Vegas, the show that follows BeatleShow! and includes about 100 of the best musicians, singers, and dancers in Las Vegas, all house-mixed on the Yamaha PM5D. And, get this, there is only a 10-minute turnaround between shows! Mind you, both of these shows are very “vintage” live shows, and the Yamaha digital format works wonderfully.”

Gand Completes Record Breaking May

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Gand Concert Sound (GCS) of Glenview, Illinois aka “The NEXO Guys” recently completed a record-breaking month supplying 251 NEXO cabinets to an impressive list of clients.

“Our extensive inventory of NEXO products includes world-class cardioid GEO T and CD18 subs, our latest acquisition mid-sized GEO S12, compact PS8, PS15, PS10, PS8 wedges and Alpha conventional cabinets all powered by NEXO 4×4 NXAmps,” states Gary Gand, President of Gand Concert Sound. GCS was the first company in the Midwest to adopt NEXO’s Tangent Array system when it was introduced in 2003.

Gand clients during May included Li’L Ed & the Imperials, Bobby Vinton, Leahy, Crystal Bowersox, Carol Burnett, Stryper, Andrew Bird, Freddie Jones Band, Ludicris, Switchfoot, Oak Ridge Boys, Frankie Valli, Enrique Iglesias, Gym Class Heroes, The Wanted, B.o.B, Cobra Starship, Havana Brown, DEV, Neon Hitch, Carly Rae Jepsen, Karmin, Adam Lambert, The Doobie Brothers, and Dave Mason, to name just a few.

The month finished off with a return to the Allstate Arena in Roselle, Illinois for Fantabuloso 3. An impressive 24-per side NEXO GEO T line array supported by 18 GEO S1210s, 24 CD18 cardioid subs, 10 4×4 NXAmps, and Yamaha PM5D-RH and LS9-16 digital consoles for monitors, played an integral role in the radio- promoted festival that featured 12 performances including bands and the country’s top DJs.

“The NEXO system performed very well at Fantabuloso 3,” stated Gand. “The GEO T is small, but mighty, and produces SPLs comparable to the bigger boxes. Coupled with their cardioid design and cardioid CD18 subs, we feel they are the best in their class. All the band engineers were happy.”

GCS also supplied NEXO PS15 R2s for monitor speakers, Alpha Series for flown side fills and S2 subs, Sennheiser G2 and G3 in ear monitors and Shure UHF-R wireless handhelds with KSM9, B58A, SM58, and B87C capsules at Fantabuloso 3 and made use of quick-change snake boxes from Link.

FOH engineer Adam Rosenthal said, “Fantabuloso 3 was quite the undertaking. Our crew worked tirelessly throughout the show, with only a few seconds of down time.”

Peltrix Aids in Rebirth of Historic Howard Theater with Yamaha Consoles

BUENA PARK, Calif.—For decades, The Howard Theater was more than a theater; it was an institution, a place where performers of color could get a foothold in the profession, where the community could listen to the sounds and power of the black musician. Sadly neglected since the early 1980s, today the theater is enjoying a rebirth and a entering a new era in its long and prestigious history.

As part of its rebirth, contracting firm Peltrix (New York) installed two Yamaha PM5D-RH digital consoles, one at front of house and one at the monitor position. The theater, which seats 600 and houses 1,000 for standing-room only events, hosts high-caliber music performances as well as corporate and political events, given its proximity to the Capitol and its adjacent location to Howard University.

Peltrix owner, Amit Peleg, was brought in to replace another designer in August 2009. The building design plans were at 30% completion at the time but it was early enough to allow Peltrix to do what was needed in the design stage. It took two and a half years from the point Peltrix was brought in to completion of the theater’s overhaul. In addition to the design, the Company was responsible for the integration and installation of the AV system along with assisting the new owners to hire and train production staff.

“We were recommended by the Bensusan Group who are the operators of the Howard Theater, since we’d worked for them at other venues in the past, such as the Blue Note and BB King’s in New York, states Peleg. Since we are very familiar with their type of business and style of operation, it made communication with the Howard Theater Restoration developers easier.“

Peleg said the building was completely gutted, and the outer walls were supported externally while a basement was dug and new foundation was put in. This allowed Peltrix to fit a completely modern system into a historical building that originally was never meant for amplified music. “I actually set the requirements which were based on my experience working with the operators on their other venues,” says Peleg.

The philosophy behind this installation, Peleg said, was to put in a system that is rider-friendly and flexible since the space is used for many styles and genres of music along with private parties and corporate events. “We needed a system that could accommodate anything thrown at it without the need for modifications, augmentation or replacement of gear on a per-show basis, he notes. We went the extra mile to design a very flexible wiring scheme that allows patching of any kind of signal anywhere in the building and everywhere on stage along with preparation for expansion for a recording studio planned in the near future. The Yamaha PM5D-RH consoles were the most logical fit for this kind of setup. We are running the consoles at 96k using a Big Ben external clock that gives us superior sound quality. Signal path is all AES/96k from the console to the DSP and through to the amps.”

In addition to the Yamaha consoles, Peltrix installed a JBL speaker system and a new video system consisting of Da-Lite projection screens, Samsung and Sharp LCDs, Sanyo projectors, Vaddio cameras, and an Elation LED screen.

Blossom’s in Full Bloom with NEXO GEO S12 System


The Blossom Music Center is an amphitheatre located in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio within the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Owned by The Cleveland Orchestra’s governing organization, Musical Arts Association in Cleveland, and managed by Live Nation, the pavilion seats 5,700 people, with space for about 13,500 more on the lawn. It is the summer home of The Cleveland Orchestra, performing its annual Blossom Festival at the amphitheatre. The site’s natural setting, sloping slate roof, and the area’s natural wooded surroundings distinguish it from other contemporary amphitheatres. The venue operates May through October.

The venue is also host to a full summer schedule of popular music acts and symphonic performances. This year, the venue plays host to Drake, Lady Antebellum, Radiohead, Dave Matthews Band, 2012 Country Megaticket Tour, Beach Boys Reunion Tour, Phish, 2012 Vans Warped Tour, Barry Manilow, just to name a few.

The facility, originally designed by architect Peter van Dijk, underwent a $17 million renovation in 2003; however, NAC Technologies in Cleveland was brought in to design a sound system to replace the aging lawn system. “Musical Arts is a non-profit organization so we had a tight budget and needed to have a system that would deliver the best bang for the buck,” states Rick Galbraith, senior audio engineer, NAC Technologies. With assistance from NEXO independent rep firm, R. Joseph Group, a 10-box NEXO GEO S12 line array system, supplemented with three NEXO Alpha speakers for fill zones, all powered by multiple 4×4 NXAmps, was installed.


“The new system had to be able to take care of the needs of the Orchestra and cater to Live Nation events,” says Galbraith. NAC has a long history with NEXO. “NEXO is always a sure thing. We have used the NEXO GEO systems in four of the five theaters at Playhouse Square, and installed a 64-box GEO S12 system in the Palace Theater that most Broadway shows use instead of what they are carrying.”

Prior to the season opening, NAC installed 48 NEXO Geo S12 cabinets in the ten existing sound bays. The bays are arranged in an arch, are about 35’ apart and vary in height from 19’ on the ends to 29’ in the middle. The longest part of the lawn with the highest bays, has two hangs of five GEO S1210 and one S1230, with the next bay of 4/1, then 3/1, then a bay of three S1230s in a horizontal configuration and mirrored on the other side. The system is powered by all NEXO 4×4 NXAMPs.

For time alignment and EQ, NAC installed a Yamaha DME64 to straighten out the bays and give the visiting engineers their own delay device. Last year NAC installed three NEXO Alpha full range cabinets per side on a pole system on the outside of the pavilion. Since the system must function for both the orchestra concerts and rock shows, the DME allows scene storage for any and all events.
For orchestra concerts, NAC also provides a 40-box NEXO GEO S8 LCR system, PS10 and PS15 floor monitors, and Yamaha M7CL digital consoles.

“I’ve always thought for years the only thing keeping Blossom from being an absolutely perfect venue (although it was always still my favorite) was the lack of a decent lawn sound system,” notes Bill Horschke, from sister Live Nation venue, Nautica. “I was very pleasantly surprised when attending a DMB concert to see a nice NEXO rig installed for the lawn, thus completing my jealousy from this nature loving concrete and steel veteran. Kudos to all who made the new system happen. It is very, very cool. Crank it up, and rock them trees!”

Sound Works Productions Supports Northwestern’s PhilFest

The event raises money for the Rocky Mountain Institute; an organization that researches more effective use of resources and that Semmer aspired to join after graduation.

Sound Works Productions of Frankfort, Illinois, not only staffed the event (Eric Lindholm at Front of House, Daniel Nickleski at Monitors and Kevin Flasza as Stage Tech), but also provided a NEXO GEO S line array for the main PA along with a Yamaha M7CL-48 digital console for FOH and LS9-32 for monitors.

The NEXO GEO S12 was configured as eight GEO S1210s, two GEO S1230s for mains, two PS10s used for front fills, four RS18 Ray Subs, and three 4×4 NXAmps.
