Four Join Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems “A” Team

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. (YCAS) has announced the appointment of four industry notables to positions on the marketing and technical teams.

Steve Armstrong spent close to 20 years as an independent rep in the Northwest and Northern California representing many top lines including Dolby Lake, L-Acoustics, and NEXO. He also held the position of North American Director of Sales at JBL for 12 years in 1994. Previously, Steve was tour director for two major product roll outs and involved in the design and installation of several major installations, most notably, Bayside Church in Roseville, CA; Herbst Theater and Great American Music Hall in San Francisco; and the Hult Center in Eugene, OR. In his new position as Speaker Systems Application Engineer at YCAS, he will support the NEXO product line as well as Yamaha branded speaker systems.

Chad Cooper began his career at Capitol Records in the A&R department during college. He then worked for the Walt Disney Company at the Disneyland Resort for the past 28 years as both a Live Sound Engineer/Technician and Manager, mixing upwards of ten thousand shows in his career at Disney, then becoming a manager in the technical services department in charge of the flagship Hyperion Theater in the Disney California Adventure Park. As Applications Manager, Chad is responsible for YCAS Technical Support.

Patrick Killianey joined YCAS as Network Systems Applications Engineer in late 2013 with over 15 years of experience in Pro Audio, Automation, and Commercial Sound. Working with TASCAM, AMX and M-Audio, Patrick was involved in product development, market expansion, and customer education initiatives. He also spent seven years operating his own business – South Coast Logic – providing system design, project management, and automation programming services for premiere dealers across the country. Patrick’s focus at YCAS is on the mass transition towards networked audio, acting as an internal champion and an educator to the industry.

Marcel Mauceri has been appointed to the position of NUAGE Technical Marketing Specialist. His music and audio experience range from live performance, songwriting, and recording to audio post-production work for independent feature films. Prior to joining YCAS, Marcel held multiple positions over fourteen years, including Echo Digital Audio, a research and development company located in Santa Barbara, CA. where he managed global sales, interfaced with clients as the go–to tech person, and was a contributor to Echo product development and OEM projects for Mackie and Gibson guitar.

Yamaha CL V2.0 Now Available

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. has announced the availability of Version 2.0 for Yamaha CL Series Digital Audio Consoles. This most recent update includes enhancements for sound reinforcement applications as well as mix-minus capabilities for the broadcast market, broadening the range of applications where CL Series performance can be advantageous. One significant enhancement in V2.0 is discovery and head amp control for the new, compact QL Series that also inherits CL Series features and performance. A QL console can function as both monitor mixer and I/O rack, for example, while a front-of-house CL console can remotely control the head amp gain of the QL console’s I/O.

Other new features in CL V2.0 include DCA Roll-Out: Channels assigned to DCA groups can be instantly called up to the console faders for enhanced operational flexibility; output DCA enables the Stereo/Mono bus masters, Mix bus masters, and Matrix bus masters to be assigned to DCA groups. Mix Minus, an important feature in broadcast applications is now provided; with one simple operation the signal from a particular channel can be removed from a specified bus.

With Read Only Scene Memory, it is now possible to create read-only scene memories. A new Daisy Chain Insert feature allows two devices to be inserted into one channel or bus for enhanced processing freedom. A GR Meter (dynamics meter) Option within the Channel Name Display will show the Dynamics 1 and Dynamics 2 gain reduction meters in the channel name display.

Future CL updates include built-in Dugan automatic mixing similar to the new QL Series and additional support for broadcast applications.

Grove City Church of the Nazarene Upgrades to New Yamaha Digital System

BUENA PARK, Calif.—The Naz Church in Grove City, Ohio main auditorium seats approximately 2,800 people and has a congregation of 3,000. The church recently installed two Yamaha CL Series Digital Audio Consoles (a CL5 at front of house and a CL1 at monitors), eight Rio input/output boxes: two Rio3224-D, two Rio1608-D, two Ri8s, and two Ro8s. The system was purchased through Boynton Pro Audio (Norwich, NY) and installed by church staff and volunteers.

“This was not our first experience with digital consoles,” states Matt Groves, Technical Director at The Naz. “We previously used a Yamaha LS9 at monitors and a Yamaha PM1D at front of house. The purchase of the CL system began when we started looking for a replacement monitor console because our Yamaha LS9 was stolen from the monitor booth. One of our front of house engineers, Doug McLaughlin with Tech Art Productions in Columbus, suggested we purchase a CL Series, and after researching it more, we discovered how functional it would be for us. Our audio engineers are volunteers with previous digital console experience on our LS9 and PM1D, so the only training required was to watch the self-training videos on the Yamaha website. The set up and operation of the CL system was very user-friendly.”

The Church of the Nazarene has both traditional and contemporary services. The traditional service consists of an 80-member choir, a 15-piece orchestra, a rhythm section (with a five- piece drum kit, two digital keyboards, bass, two acoustic guitars, one electric guitar, synth/tracks), and seven main vocalists. The contemporary service consists of a five-piece drum kit, digital keyboard, bass, acoustic guitar, two electric guitars, synth/tracks, and four vocalists.

“Because of the many components each service style presents, we felt it was a good opportunity to start our CL system upgrade,” Groves said. “We decided to purchase a CL1 with a Rio3224-D first to replace the monitor console, and our master plan was to eventually purchase a CL5 for front of house. A couple of weeks after installing the CL1, we began having major issues and failures with our then existing analog wiring and patch bays, so we decided to accelerate the completion of our system and purchased the CL5 along with the seven additional Rio boxes.”

Groves said the features that determined the church selection of the CL Series was the Dante networking and the ability to bypass their old/existing wiring. “The use of the Dante system is so functional for us as a church,” he says. “Since we run two very different style worship services and host many events and concerts throughout the year, having the Dante network gives us the flexibility we need. We also needed to replace the existing wiring and patch bays so being able to run a redundant network with Cat5e cable between the consoles and Rio boxes was a huge cost savings for us. Our system now sounds the cleanest it has ever sounded.”

The Naz also upgraded part of their video system infrastructure using Ross Video’s Carbonite 2M 24 Switcher MultiMedia Edition. The video control room is home to the switcher along with two 60″ Panasonic plasma displays for multi-viewer use with the Carbonite, along with three 24″ LCD displays for preview use. The church staff records to two solid-state hard drives using Blackmagic’s Hyperdeck Studio Pro. Four Mac Pro’s are used for video playback, lyric projection, and live streaming of services, using Livestream as their streaming service provider.

“We currently run five cameras,” Groves notes, “however, these are still our older cameras (three Sony D-30′s and two Canon XH-A1’s). Right now we are meshing our standard definition cameras with the high definition infrastructure, which took some doing, but works great now after some trial and error and many converters.”

With regard to the new Yamaha system, Groves said the system has unbelievable clarity. “It’s amazing when you have the system on and can’t tell it’s on. Before the installation, our system was pretty noisy from the analog wiring and patch bays, but now there is no noise at all. The clarity and depth of sound we’re getting from this system is amazing!”

Reach Communications Adds NEXO STM Line Array To Arsenal

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Reach Communications of Minneapolis, MN has added a new NEXO STM line array to its already impressive stable of NEXO boxes. “We researched NEXO, L’Acoustics, d&b and others for boxes having a high 145+db peak output per box, to use as a large format line array for our bigger shows, states Dan Brown, Event Services Manager, at Reach. Having had a long history with NEXO and owning 130+ boxes in house before this purchase, we felt with our current inventory and amazing support from NEXO, this was the obvious option.” With the addition of the STM, Reach now owns 192 NEXO boxes, and 34 NXAmp 4×4 and 4 NXAmp 4×1 amplifiers.

So far, the NEXO STM rig has been used on Unite – NDOP 2014 and the KTIS Joyful Noise Family Festival 2014. NDOP included Hillsong United and a local Unite house band. KTIS Joyful Noise acts included Lincoln Brewster, Mercy Me, Tenth Ave North, Steven Curtis Chapman, Audio Adrenaline, Mandisa, and Hawk Nelson.

“The output and sound quality is incredible and very accurate, says Brown. We have had engineers comment that the STM rig has headroom for days and I barely had to do anything to the EQ! We wanted a system that would give engineers a clean canvas to mix on and headroom to handle the largest venues, and STM provides that.”

For NDOP 2014, the NEXO layout consisted of 12 STM M46 boxes and 12 B112 bass per side, 8 GEO S12s per side for outfill and 9 GEO S12s per side for rear fill. 8 STM S118 subs were used left and right with 8 RS18 spread across the center, and 8 PS10-R2s provided front fill. For Joyful Noise, the NEXO layout consisted of 12 STM M46 boxes and B112 bass per side, 12 GEO S12s HL used for outfill, 5 GEO S12s HR for outfill, 16 GEO S12 used for delays – 8 left and 8 right, 16 NEXO STM S118 subs – 8 per side in Cardioid configuration, 18 RS18 ray subs spread across the center in stacks of 3, and 8 PS10-R2 for front fill. The monitor rig for Joyful Noise included 10 PS15-R2 wedges, 2 PS15-R2 and 2 RS18s for side fills, and 2 RS15 used for drum subs. 14 NEXO NUAR racks powered the system.

“Reach Communications rig was my first experience with the NEXO STM, and it was incredible! states Lee Fields, front of house engineer for Lincoln Brewster. The horsepower of this PA is remarkable. From the second I started mixing until the last note, I was blown away by the punch of the LF and smoothness of the HF. This is Seriously the muscle-car of PA’s.”

For Unite NDOP, Reach provided two Yamaha CL5 digital audio consoles, one at front of house and one for monitors and a PM5D-RH for the house band monitors. A Yamaha CL5 was used at FOH and PM5D-RH at monitors for Joyful Noise. Reach also used the new Yamaha QL1 digital audio console for playback and announcements.

Additional audio gear supplied by Reach included Sennheiser 2000 IEM, Shure UHF-R, Shure, Sennheiser, Beyer, AT mics and Radial, Countryman DI’s. Lighting included Vari-Lite VL3000 spot, VL3500 spot, Martin MAC Aura, MAC 101 – Atomic 3000, ChromaQ colorforce 48, Chauvet 230SR Beam, GrandMA2 light. Video consisted of Hitachi HD1000 camera, Ross Carbonite 2ME switcher, Ross Router, AJA KiPro recorders.

Corporate A/V Company Adds Yamaha QL1 For Fortune 100 Clients

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Sardis Media of Grayslake, Illinois recently took delivery of a new Yamaha QL1 Series Digital Audio Console for use on their corporate A/V projects. For over 30 years, Sardis Media has produced videos, meetings, and special events for Fortune 100 corporations, non-profits, and A-list associations. Clients include Advisors Excel, Motorola Solutions, Baxter, MorphoTrak, RustOleum, & RZIM. The company purchased its QL1 from Reach Communications of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota.

Sardis, who also owns a Yamaha M7CL Digital Audio Console, will use the new QL1 on the road as the primary audio console for smaller corporate events that require large event features. “We needed a console that had a lot of power and features but in a much smaller footprint for front of house for our production truck, says company spokesperson Nate Aguilar. Clients are always happy when we save space at FOH so they can fit more attendees in the room. As operators, we love that we don’t have to sacrifice quality when going to a small console like the QL1.”

Aguilar said that being in the corporate events business they are always dealing with more than a few Lavaliere microphones open at one time on stage, and the built-in Dugan auto mixer feature of the QL1 helps manage levels tremendously.

“We knew we wanted a touch screen for quick adjustments and graphic feedback on changes being made, says Aguilar. Most of us on staff at Sardis have a background in graphics or video, so being able to actually see what the console is outputting is important. Also, the built-in Dante network gives us the flexibility to add channels and outputs when needed in small increments, and having the ability to record every input separately is vital.”

Since Sardis already owns an M7CL and loves the operation, Aguilar notes, “it was a no brainer to add the Yamaha QL1 with its minimal learning curve to our inventory.”

Las Vegas Production Company High Jumps with Yamaha NUAGE System

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Dog & Pony Studios in Las Vegas has been in business for 11 years with its primary focus on audio post, sound design, composition, and audio for games. Clients include MGM Resorts, Caesars Entertainment, Skechers, and Aristocrat Technologies, to name a few. The first thing that strikes me about NUAGE is the ability to forgo use of the mouse and keyboard which, to me, is a huge advantage and the “holy grail” of how a controller should work. NEXO GEO M620 Line Array Makes InfoComm 2014 Debut

LAS VEGAS—Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. will preview the new NEXO GEO M6 compact loudspeaker series at InfoComm 2014. A very versatile, arrayable, cabinet design that represents renowned NEXO product design, flexibility, high SPL output, and exceptional sonic clarity for speech and music sound reinforcement.

In its design, the GEO M6 extends beyond NEXO’s tradition of live music applications toward the corporate AV sector and a wide range of fixed installation opportunities where speech reinforcement is the primary requirement. Target markets include theatre, conference facilities and auditoriums, exhibition halls, multi-purpose rooms, airports, shopping malls, entertainment parks, and houses of worship. The GEO M6 Series is comprised of the GEO M620 arrayable cabinet and the GEO M6B bass extension.

The GEO M620 is a full-range unit for stand-alone, curved array or line array applications. Extremely compact in size (and lightweight (less than 22 lbs.), the GEO M620 uses a NEXO-designed long-excursion high-efficiency 6.5” LF driver and 1×1″ throat driver on a BEA/FEA optimized HR Wavesource, to deliver a frequency response of 80 Hz – 19 kHz ±3dB, with nominal peak SPL of 127dB. HF dispersion is 80° or 120° horizontal, with 20° vertical coverage, 0° to 20° splay when arrayed. Using NEXO’s HRW patented waveguide for optimum HF coupling the M620 performs in a variety of configurations, facilitated by a fully-integrated 3-point rigging system.

“The GEO M6 Series will be beneficial for sound company rental inventory and extremely adaptable for various situations,” states Marc Lopez, Marketing Manager, Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. The product design offers maximum potential for sound reinforcement installations for many applications.”

The GEO M6B is a low and mid-frequency extension box for applications that demand more powerful reinforcement, such as live music. With one 6.5″ 8-ohm long-excursion driver, the M6B weighs just under 17 lbs. and shares the same physical footprint as the M620, allowing the cabinets to be arrayed together in the same column. Featuring a flare-shaped port tube to increase low frequency efficiency and linearity at high power, the M6B offers a usable range @-6dB of 70Hz – 1kHz.

Made out of a light-weight polyurethane composite, the GEO M6 cabinets are available to order in any color designation. Highly cost-effective amplification is via NEXO’s NXAMP4x1 TDcontroller; with three cabinets per channel; i.e. a 12-cabinet system can be powered by just one amplifier and controlled over a Dante or Ethersound network.

GEO M620 loudspeakers can be used as single or in pairs, in curved arrays of three, in line arrays up to 12 cabinets long, depending on application and enabled by a range of simple accessories that allow flying, wall-mounting, pole-mounting and ground-stacking, pairing with any of NEXO’s wide range of sub-bass cabinets to create a highly portable SR solution. GEO M6B bass extensions can be deployed inside a M620 line array, allowing the user to increase line array length for improved directivity control and output in the low-mid frequency range.

Huntsville, AL Church Relies on Muzeek World for Dual Yamaha CL5s

BUENA PARK, Calif.—First Seventh Day Adventist Church in Huntsville, AL relied on supplier Muzeek World of San Juan Capistrano, CA to provide dual Yamaha CL5 digital audio consoles for their new sanctuary. The new sanctuary seats approximately 1,300 and has a congregation of 1,500.

Two Yamaha CL5 Digital Audio Console were installed along with two Rio3224-D input/output boxes. One Rio is located on the stage and the other is located at the FOH CL5 location. “The purchase of the dual CL consoles was based upon the fact that the church previously owned a Yamaha console in their former sanctuary and had a wonderful experience using it,” states Muzeek World’s John Sardari.

“There are several new features in the CL5 which helped us decide this was exactly what we needed for the new sanctuary, states Julian Ray at First Seventh Day Adventist who designed and installed the audio system. For starters, the expandability of the number of channels we can use. We enabled the board with 64 channels initially, and if necessary, we can expand in the future to its maximum. Second, the ability to have the sound engineer control the monitor mix on stage with the musicians, and while doing a sound check using an iPad, he/she can fine-tune and make changes on the monitors and have an accurate overview of the monitor mix. This eliminates the potential discrepancies between what the vocalists’ need and what they get in the monitors. We use floor monitors for the vocalists while the entire band is on in-ear system.”

Ray said the third reason for our selection of the CLs was based on the framework of their previous Yamaha console. We used an M7CL for about six years and had the team already trained on the same software, so the learning curve moving to CL5 was a breeze. Other than the initial network programming and a few changes in the setup, we had the entire team up to date very quickly.”

The contemporary worship service at First Seventh Day uses on average five to nine musicians at any given time during sermons. There is also a seven-member praise team and several choirs ranging between 30 and 100 members. The church has two additional rooms where they have installed audio-visual equipment. While a CL5 FOH console is in the center of the sanctuary on the balcony level, a second CL5 is in a room used to mix sound for recordings and video streaming over the Internet, using the Yamaha CL Nuendo Live software to capture the multi-track recordings.

The second room housing the Yamaha CL5 is also hosting all video equipment where the live streams occur. The video equipment includes HD Sony VPLFH500L Projectors, Panasonic AWRP50 cameras and controller, Panasonic AWHE120K – HD video cameras, a Teradek – video encoder, Fostex/Tascam/JVC used for recording and playback, and Blackmagic design for monitoring, recording, mixing, routing, fiber optics transmission, and converters.

New Jersey Township Chooses Yamaha CIS System

BUENA PARK, Calif.—The Township of Evesham, New Jersey courthouse is a typical municipal courtroom. It doubles as a non-jury courtroom, as well as a council meeting room and a township meeting room. Between the court and various town meetings, there can be up to 16 microphones on at any given time. The microphones need to be fed to the live speakers and for multi-track recording purposes.

ACIR Professional of Mays Landing, New Jersey was chosen to replace the live portion of the Township’s audio system in the hope of obtaining a cleaner, clearer sound. “In addition to obtaining a better quality sound, the customer still wanted to be able to send audio via multi-track to record,” states Vice President of Sales, Bobby Harper. “Having just demoed the new Yamaha CIS (Commercial Installation Solutions) Series products, the design became obvious.”

ACIR Pro chose a Yamaha MTX5-D processor with the EiX8-8 channel extender in order to accommodate the 16 inputs required. The processor also handles the routing of multi-track and a 4-zone (mix minus) to the Yamaha XMV4280-D Dante-enabled 4-channel amplifier. Yamaha VXC8W speakers were chosen for their clarity and ease of installation. The speakers are zoned for maximum gain before feedback. With assistance from a Dugan MY-16 Auto Mixer card installed in the MTX5-D and the extensive parametric EQ capabilities on each zone output.

Harper said the volume and clarity before feedback was staggering for both courtroom and meeting pre-sets. The presets were stored in the Yamaha MTX5-D library. Recall is available from an in-wall mounted Yamaha DCP1V4S-US controller that the clerk has at his/her fingertips. “Overall Yamaha was selected because of its new all-in-one CIS solution.”

ACIR also installed a Yamaha HS Studio Monitor along with 16 Shure MX418 D/C microphones.
