Muzeek World Upgrades Tavern with Yamaha CL5 Digital Console

BUENA PARK, Calif.—The Belly Up Tavern is a live music venue, located in Solana Beach, California. We have all types of music almost every night bringing the best in new, up-and-coming artists as well as established legends in genres ranging from alternative rock, rock, reggae, and hip-hop to blues, folk, jazz, Latin & more!

Seating approximately 600, The Belly Up Tavern recently upgraded from analog to digital at the monitor position with a Yamaha CL5 and Rio 3224-D and Rio 1608-D purchased from Muzeek World in San Juan Capistrano, CA. The company also provided a new Antari F-3 lighting system and fog machines.

“Yamaha products are built like tanks, and the sound quality of the new CL is amazing,” states John Sardari of Muzeek World. “The features on the CL are more than what anyone needs, and the learning curve is quick, but most of all, the Yamaha service to get something exchanged or repaired is the quickest out of all manufacturers.”

The CL5 has been getting a lot of use at the tavern. “We just shot our second season of Live At The Belly Up for KPBS in San Diego and used the CL5 and the Nuendo Live function to multi-track the show, states Damian DeRobbio, Belly Up Tavern Production Manager. Nuendo Live has been flawless, easy to use, and really sounds great. We are now using it to record bands live and release them on our web site (www.bellyupmusic.com). The CL5 that we purchased is actually used for monitor applications, yet because it is so compact, we have also used it for FOH when bands are carrying their own monitor console and are considering a second one for FOH. We love the ease of use and the fact that any engineer can jump on and operate it.”

DeRobbio said he really likes being able to use the iPad to dial in mixes. “The power in this little console is amazing! Not to mention how great it looks in the dark! I would highly recommend this console to anyone, touring or not. You can’t go wrong with the CL series.”

Arsenio Audio Staff (Fist) Pumped About Yamaha CL Digital Consoles

BUENA PARK, Calif.—The Arsenio Hall Show premiered in September 2013 and features a mix of comedy, music and celebrity guests, adding a new perspective to the late-night scene. Hosted by comedian and actor Arsenio Hall, the daily, one-hour nationally syndicated late-night talk show is anchored by the Tribune Broadcasting Station Group and produced by CBS Television Distribution.

Peter Baird is the sound system designer as well as the music mixer for The Arsenio Hall Show and together with the production mixer, house and monitor engineers, chose five Yamaha CL Digital Audio Consoles and six Rio3224-D input/output boxes to kick off the season. Two CL5s and one CL3 are used at front of house with two CL5s at the monitor mix position.

“When production mixer Ish Garcia asked me to come in as the show’s music mixer, we spent some time together strategizing about what an ideal system would look like, states Baird. We knew the show would be very music-heavy and wanted the system requirements to check four main boxes: 1) 160 inputs available to split between the house band, guest artists, and production, 2) tight integration and future-proofing, 3) stability and reasonable immunity from buzzes, hums, and grounding issues, and 4) incontestably great sound.”

Baird said he did a lot of research and was surprised to find that most major professional audio manufacturers still think in terms of single consoles with local input/output resources rather than integrated, networked systems. “It’s true that some manufacturers have implemented various modes of moving audio around including MADI and EtherSound, but only Yamaha had really perfected the relationship between separate console operators using shared resources. And, the more I read about Dante, the more I thought a large Dante network might be the best answer for us.”

Garcia and Baird have been through the audio selection process before, having been the mixing team on Lopez Tonight and, explains Baird, “in a project like The Arsenio Hall Show, the audio team needs to be able to move inputs and outputs around quickly and flexibly to deal with whatever the production team might throw at us. For example, we need to be able to quickly integrate any number of players suddenly showing up to sit in with the house band, while at the same time keeping the whole system as simple and understandable as possible for the operators. Yamaha’s incremental approach to console operations and CentraLogic™ meant that our FOH and Monitor Mixers, James Young and Greg Keslake, were already largely familiar with the console surface conventions from the very first day.”

Baird added that the economics of networked audio are not insignificant. “Traditionally a show like The Arsenio Hall Show would have at least three 56 pair of three-way transformer splitters with all of the associated interconnect copper between them, and in some cases, hundreds and hundreds of feet. Those 504 outputs (3 x 56 x 3) would feed separate consoles, with each output requiring a separate head amp. As mixers, we know that the best-sounding consoles are the ones with the best head amps, and a console with 64 top-drawer head amps costs more money than one with 64 mediocre head amps. But a networked system only needs one really great head amp per channel no matter how many consoles it’s connected to! With the CL series having only 8 head amps on board, Yamaha was able to spend time and money making the console as ergonomically correct as possible rather than trying to re-engineer head amp design to fit a small footprint. Also, in the case of Dante, local interconnects are on Cat 6 cable, with point-to-point connections on fiber, a monumental savings over the same capabilities in copper. And to clarify, the head amps in the Rio3224-D input/output box are spectacular! They are clear and detailed, yet with great body, warmth, and musicality; a great foundation for a system in a critical installation like The Arsenio Hall Show.”

Monitor Engineer, Greg Keslake says he’s a big fan of Yamaha digital consoles having been introduced to digital over 15 years ago with the Yamaha 01V, and since that time, has extensively used all of the larger format consoles. “We are using Dante exclusively for FOH, Monitors and Music Production, and I am even using a Dante MY16 Card in my house monitor console for high level returns from production.”

Keslake said for monitors he’s using one CL5 dedicated to the house band and one dedicated to the guest bands. “The house band is using the new Aviom 360′s, and I am sending the band each a mixture of direct outs, mixes and matrices. This has given them the comfort of being able to adjust the instruments of their choice very quickly but hasn’t limited my ability to supplement their mixes as needed. The Yamaha CL has also made it extremely easy to swap around what channels I send the house band based on weekly sit-in artists via Dante patching.”

On the guest band console, Keslake has dedicated mixes 1-16 as stereo in-ears, 17-24 as wedges, matrix’s 1-7 are effects sends, and matrix 8 is a drum sub mix. “The dedicated mixes have allowed me to have a very good starting point for almost any guest band with very little information. I have found the ability to map my own channels to custom fader banks immensely valuable specifically on the CL5 guest band console. I am using the C5 and C6 banks to map my daily used mixes enabling me to bounce around very quickly between them. I was also extremely impressed with the addition of the Premium Rack in the CL Series.”

With an audience of 201, James Young, front of house engineer is using a CL3 for the house band with six stems to the CL5 production console: left, right, sub, two vocal stems, lead and BGV, and a ‘guest’ stem for when someone sits in with the house band. Guest bands land in a separate CL5 with a similar 6 stem set up. “The Dante network has been very stable, and the Yamaha CL consoles are very easy to set up and use with classic Yamaha reliability. I also appreciate the extra DCA’s, effects rack, and custom fader banks.”

Yamaha MTX New Firmware and Software Enables AEC and Dugan MY Card Compatibility

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. has announced Version 1.2 firmware and application software for the MTX Series Matrix Processor, the core product of the Commercial Installation Solutions (CIS) product line. MTX v1.2 now makes the processor compatible with the MY4-AEC acoustic echo cancellation card required for distance conferencing and the Dugan-MY16 auto mixing capability card.

The Yamaha CIS Series, launched in 2012, includes the VXC Series Ceiling Speakers, VXS Series Surface Mount Speakers, XMV Series Multi-channel Power Amplifiers, and the MTX Series Matrix Processors specifically designed for the commercial installation solutions market. Now with MTX v1.2, there is an even more comprehensive range of flexibility that will meet the demands of installed applications.

The new software enables compatibility with the two MY cards that was previously only available for use primarily with Yamaha’s DME Series Digital Mixing Engines. The MY4-AEC card eliminates unwanted acoustic echo that is caused by secondary signals of speaker output or reflections from room surfaces that are common in teleconferencing applications. The card is equipped with a noise reduction function that removes steady-state background noise caused by air conditioning components, projector fans, etc. Once the card is installed in the processor, parameter settings can be controlled using the AEC window in the MTX Editor program.

The Dugan-MY16 card, developed by Dan Dugan Sound Design, automatically optimizes the gain distribution of multiple faders simultaneously, allowing sound engineers to focus on their mix rather than keeping track of mic levels. Auto mixing parameters can be set using dedicated software that works in conjunction with the MTX Editor and is available via free download at www.dandugan.com.

River Oaks Retires Analog Console, Upgrades to Yamaha CL5 Digital

BUENA PARK, Calif.—The 600-seat River Oaks Community Church, in Goshen, Indiana, holds contemporary worship services, and on any given Sunday, serves 1,200 of its congregation. With a rotating pool of 25 musicians, a standard worship service consists of 5-10 members on stage. The church recently retired its aged analog console and upgraded to a new Yamaha CL5 digital audio console and Rio 3224-D and 1608-D input/output boxes, purchased from Mid-America Sound in Greenfield, Indiana.

“We had an analog console for about ten years that outlived its welcome”, states Tim Blaum, Program Director at the church and who installed the CL. “We realized we needed to have additional control and mixing space.”

Blaum notes that on occasion, the church had to rent a Yamaha M7CL for outdoor gigs or other special services when they needed a little extra control. “We have a volunteer team that is comfortable in the analog environment using a full bank of physical faders because it’s what we’ve been used to, but we knew it was time to upgrade to digital. Several industry professionals recommended we investigate the new Yamaha CL Series since it has several added benefits. After weighing our options, we heeded their advice and decided to go with the CL5 because of its power and features.”

Prior to the new CL’s arrival, volunteers viewed online tutorial videos, having been familiar with the M7CL. “Yamaha digital consoles have always been strong and reliable, and with the CL’s price point, the console will give us room to grow and expand our worship ministry,” Blaum says. “Talented musicians with years of training and skill lead our ministry, and our production team is eager to help them sound the best they can with our new desk.” The church is currently using the Dante network locally due to its pre-existing snake structure.

Blaum also said the front of house location is an elevated mezzanine, which makes mixing difficult. “We are living by the console’s iPad App; our engineers stay on ground level during rehearsals and worship to make sure our mix is perfect. The labeling on the CL was a major enhancement, but we really love just about every feature it has since we came directly from the analog world. The console sounds great, and since its installation, we’ve had numerous compliments about our mix greatly improving. No doubt, this is an exciting step forward for us.”

Casino Lounge Upgrades with New Yamaha CIS Series

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Already outfitted with Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems equipment, Tulalip Casino Resort in Tulalip, Washington recently upgraded its Destinations Lounge audio system with the new Yamaha Commercial Installation Solutions (CIS) product line. The system includes one MTX3 processor, two XMV4280 amplifiers, six VXS8 speakers, 16 VSC8W speakers, and two VXS10SW subs, all purchased on the recommendation of Clarity Media Group (CMG), Lake Oswego, Oregon.

“We decided to use the Yamaha CIS products primarily based on the sound quality of the demo units we listened to, states Travis Cibolski, co-owner and system designer, CMG. We also appreciated the system’s ability to integrate with the existing infrastructure to offer simple operation for our customer.”

Cibolski said CMG wanted to create a relaxing and high-end environment in the Destination Lounge. The audio is accompanied by a 4K Atmosphere video system displaying music being played by the artists, a mix of music videos, “mood” music which contains pictures of nature, cityscapes, etc. with music, and “digital karaoke” style scene with a live band covering songs. Each band member is played on a different TV appearing on four HD screens. For this reason, stereo in every seat was a must. The wide dispersion of the Yamaha CIS speakers allowed us to do this without cluttering the ceiling with lots of speakers. Surface mounted speakers are used for the entry and placed between suspended ceiling panels. The Yamaha speakers are compact enough to be completely hidden, offering pleasing sound with a low visual impact.”

Amos Lee Tour Takes Two Yamaha CLs on The Road in Support of Latest CD

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Amos Lee is an American singer-songwriter whose musical style encompasses folk, rock and soul. Born in Philadelphia, the 36-year old is embarking on a new tour in support of his sixth CD, “Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song.” This CD follows the release of his album ‘Mission Bell’ that debuted at #1 on the Billboard top 200 chart. Currently finishing the fall leg of the tour, Lee and the crew will be hitting the road again in February for the winter leg.

TC Furlong of Lake Forest, Illinois is supporting Lee’s tour with a rental package including a Yamaha CL5 digital audio console at front of house, a CL1 for monitors, two Rio3224-D input/output boxes positioned onstage, along with wireless IEM units for the band. Pendleton has been using Yamaha digital consoles for years. “I’ve spent a good bit of time with the LS9 and the M7CL, and fell in love with the PM5D, states Pendleton. The 5D and I became good friends at the Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville, VA where I was the house engineer.” Pendleton said while he’s a big fan of pre-training on new gear, he’s a firm believer that one learns by doing, and so he dove right into the CL5.

“In general, I really like the Yamaha CL platform and the ease of function, says Pendleton. The approach can’t be beat, and the progression from the M7CL to the CL Series is why I ultimately went with CL consoles for our tour. Taking a highly functional platform and combining it with top-notch pre-amps in expandable stage racks made the decision a no brainer for me.”

Pendleton added that both he and monitor engineer Reuben Cantu, are using Dante networking to communicate between the CL5 at FOH, CL1 in monitor world, and the two RIO racks tied together on the stage. “It took me a second to wrap my head around it, but the Dante network has been rock solid for us.” He noted that the console’s Premium Rack is also an excellent addition to Yamaha consoles. “The pre-amps sound great on their own, but to add premium EQs and compressors really pushes the sound quality over the top. Really great stuff… I hate to sound silly, but most things about the CL make my life easier at FOH.”

A mixing engineer for some 22 years beginning in high school, Pendleton graduated from the College of William & Mary in 2000 where he really started to dig into to his professional sound career. Since then, he’s been running clubs and music venues as well as touring with various artists, most recently GRAMMY™ award winners The Robert Glasper Experiment, Yassin Bey (a.k.a. Mos Def), and Erykah Badu.


Cantu, who has been mixing since 1997, said he has also used most digital consoles in the Yamaha family. “Like a lot of live sound engineers out there, I had my training on the job with the CL and figuring things out in the old “trial by fire” way of learning on the fly. And, one great part about the Yamaha website is the video tutorials. I watched all of the videos on the CL Series Consoles once I knew I was going out on tour with one.”

“For my life in monitor world, Cantu said, there are many features that make my life easier. From the time I save with the ease of setup of the console, to having the processing power to run the 46 channels we were using, six stereo in-ear mixes and four powered mixes. I tend to use a lot of dynamics to keep things consistent, but still keeping the live feel of each instrument without compromising the dynamics of the sound. I was also using five stereo effects to round it all out.”
Cantu happily notes how great it is to have classic Comp’s and EQ’s that ‘engineers have been drooling over’ at the touch of the screen. “How often have we had access to any two of these at one time let alone having arguably some of the best sounding dynamic devices sought after waiting to be used right in the rack?”

The company began 14 years ago, however, owner Neal Wallace started his career prior to that in the 1980s as a touring engineer. Although the basic focus for Event Pro was (and still is) providing state-of-the-art audio services, the company also provides full lighting, video, and staging services.

“Our focus is on pre-production planning and heavy client involvement in the execution of an event or concert,” states Wallace. “We also provide high school theatre sound instruction and support for school events that are often very complex in nature, some with up to 30 wireless systems, 48 audio channels, and multiple scenes programed on the consoles. With our training and the use of Yamaha digital consoles, students are able to handle 100% of an event’s audio operation.

Wallace said the new Yamaha CL5 will be used for many Event Pro productions, and Yamaha console familiarity was key to its purchase. “It was a logical step for all technicians familiar with Yamaha consoles, says Wallace. We have been avid fans of Yamaha digital consoles, but the decision also came on advice from our techs along with other production company owners, as a great usable product to own, with the expectation of providing our customers a solid new platform for superb sound.”

Wallace added that another reason for the purchase of the Yamaha CL5 is its digital snake system and the ability to “drag” only pencil thin Cat5 cables across ballroom ceilings and concert grounds instead of the heavy split analog snake systems they currently use. “The technical aspects of the Rio units and Yamaha’s attention to digital pre amp issues for split monitor dual-console systems was also was a factor,” Wallace notes.

Early spring projects for Event Pro, Inc. consist mainly of corporate and non-profit event use, while the summer season focuses on outdoor college events and many festivals where the CL5 will be particularly useful, along with theater, tour rentals, and installed sound business. “Our audio department takes much pride in supplying the ultimate in production requirements for our clients.”

Mama Mia! Yamaha CL5 Fits the Bill for ABBA MANIA

BUENA PARK, Calif.—ABBA MANIA, formed in 1999 as the world’s number one touring ABBA tribute production, is promoted by Handshake Group of Manchester, England. The U.S. leg of the tour that began in Elkhart, Indiana and ends in Sedona, Arizona has Clearwing Productions (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) to thank for handling audio production. The company provided a Yamaha CL5 Digital Audio Console with two Rio 3224-D input/output boxes for front of house mixing duties by Trevor Powers of Clearwing.

“The advantage of having the Yamaha CL5 in conjunction with two Rio i/o racks is the ultimate flexibility when interfacing with house PA’s, states Powers. Do you need AES? No problem. Do you need four outputs for your subs? No problem. The list can go on and on.” Powers said that by splitting up the Rio racks, he has eliminated the use of ANY sub-snakes on stage, which makes for a very clean looking stage. “Also, by not having long runs of mic cables before the mic pre’s, I have virtually eliminated any buzzes or hum.”

With regard to the CL’s Premium Rack, Powers is using the Rupert Neve Portico 5043 as a bass compressor and the U76 to compress/level the female leads. “I have been quite impressed with the sound quality of the CL as well as the flexibility the console offers.”
