Amos Lee Tour Takes Two Yamaha CLs on The Road in Support of Latest CD

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Amos Lee is an American singer-songwriter whose musical style encompasses folk, rock and soul. Born in Philadelphia, the 36-year old is embarking on a new tour in support of his sixth CD, “Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song.” This CD follows the release of his album ‘Mission Bell’ that debuted at #1 on the Billboard top 200 chart. Currently finishing the fall leg of the tour, Lee and the crew will be hitting the road again in February for the winter leg.

TC Furlong of Lake Forest, Illinois is supporting Lee’s tour with a rental package including a Yamaha CL5 digital audio console at front of house, a CL1 for monitors, two Rio3224-D input/output boxes positioned onstage, along with wireless IEM units for the band. ‘When front of house engineer, BJ Pendleton, initially approached us with his tour request, we looked at several configurations but quickly landed on the Yamaha CL platform, states Chris Wintz, Rental/Project Manager, TC Furlong. As a rental house, we had plenty of digital console options, but the CL feature set was a perfect match with BJ’s tour spec: superior sound quality, flexible configuration, small footprint, and easy to set-up/strike. He was great to work with, and we were happy to handle cartage, on-site training, 24×7 support, and frequency coordination.”

Pendleton has been using Yamaha digital consoles for years. “I’ve spent a good bit of time with the LS9 and the M7CL, and fell in love with the PM5D, states Pendleton. The 5D and I became good friends at the Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville, VA where I was the house engineer.” Pendleton said while he’s a big fan of pre-training on new gear, he’s a firm believer that one learns by doing, and so he dove right into the CL5.

“In general, I really like the Yamaha CL platform and the ease of function, says Pendleton. The approach can’t be beat, and the progression from the M7CL to the CL Series is why I ultimately went with CL consoles for our tour. Taking a highly functional platform and combining it with top-notch pre-amps in expandable stage racks made the decision a no brainer for me.”

Pendleton added that both he and monitor engineer Reuben Cantu, are using Dante networking to communicate between the CL5 at FOH, CL1 in monitor world, and the two RIO racks tied together on the stage. “It took me a second to wrap my head around it, but the Dante network has been rock solid for us.” He noted that the console’s Premium Rack is also an excellent addition to Yamaha consoles. “The pre-amps sound great on their own, but to add premium EQs and compressors really pushes the sound quality over the top. Really great stuff… I hate to sound silly, but most things about the CL make my life easier at FOH.”

A mixing engineer for some 22 years beginning in high school, Pendleton graduated from the College of William & Mary in 2000 where he really started to dig into to his professional sound career. Since then, he’s been running clubs and music venues as well as touring with various artists, most recently GRAMMY™ award winners The Robert Glasper Experiment, Yassin Bey (a.k.a. Mos Def), and Erykah Badu.


Cantu, who has been mixing since 1997, said he has also used most digital consoles in the Yamaha family. “Like a lot of live sound engineers out there, I had my training on the job with the CL and figuring things out in the old “trial by fire” way of learning on the fly. And, one great part about the Yamaha website is the video tutorials. I watched all of the videos on the CL Series Consoles once I knew I was going out on tour with one.”

“For my life in monitor world, Cantu said, there are many features that make my life easier. From the time I save with the ease of setup of the console, to having the processing power to run the 46 channels we were using, six stereo in-ear mixes and four powered mixes. I tend to use a lot of dynamics to keep things consistent, but still keeping the live feel of each instrument without compromising the dynamics of the sound. I was also using five stereo effects to round it all out.”
Cantu happily notes how great it is to have classic Comp’s and EQ’s that ‘engineers have been drooling over’ at the touch of the screen. “How often have we had access to any two of these at one time let alone having arguably some of the best sounding dynamic devices sought after waiting to be used right in the rack?”

Sound Company Adds Yamaha CL5 to Arsenal

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Event Pro, Inc. of Hastings, MN has recently upgraded its digital console arsenal with a new Yamaha CL5 Digital Audio Console and Rio3224-D and 1608-D input/output boxes. The purchase was facilitated by Metro Sound and Lighting, St. Paul, MN. Event Pro supports regional and national productions, and is a technical services provider for touring, corporate, civic, and educational events. The company began 14 years ago, however, owner Neal Wallace started his career prior to that in the 1980s as a touring engineer. Although the basic focus for Event Pro was (and still is) providing state-of-the-art audio services, the company also provides full lighting, video, and staging services.

“Our focus is on pre-production planning and heavy client involvement in the execution of an event or concert,” states Wallace. “We also provide high school theatre sound instruction and support for school events that are often very complex in nature, some with up to 30 wireless systems, 48 audio channels, and multiple scenes programed on the consoles. With our training and the use of Yamaha digital consoles, students are able to handle 100% of an event’s audio operation.

Wallace said the new Yamaha CL5 will be used for many Event Pro productions, and Yamaha console familiarity was key to its purchase. “It was a logical step for all technicians familiar with Yamaha consoles, says Wallace. We have been avid fans of Yamaha digital consoles, but the decision also came on advice from our techs along with other production company owners, as a great usable product to own, with the expectation of providing our customers a solid new platform for superb sound.”

Wallace added that another reason for the purchase of the Yamaha CL5 is its digital snake system and the ability to “drag” only pencil thin Cat5 cables across ballroom ceilings and concert grounds instead of the heavy split analog snake systems they currently use. “The technical aspects of the Rio units and Yamaha’s attention to digital pre amp issues for split monitor dual-console systems was also was a factor,” Wallace notes.

Early spring projects for Event Pro, Inc. consist mainly of corporate and non-profit event use, while the summer season focuses on outdoor college events and many festivals where the CL5 will be particularly useful, along with theater, tour rentals, and installed sound business. “Our audio department takes much pride in supplying the ultimate in production requirements for our clients.”

Mama Mia! Yamaha CL5 Fits the Bill for ABBA MANIA

BUENA PARK, Calif.—ABBA MANIA, formed in 1999 as the world’s number one touring ABBA tribute production, is promoted by Handshake Group of Manchester, England. The U.S. leg of the tour that began in Elkhart, Indiana and ends in Sedona, Arizona has Clearwing Productions (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) to thank for handling audio production. The company provided a Yamaha CL5 Digital Audio Console with two Rio 3224-D input/output boxes for front of house mixing duties by Trevor Powers of Clearwing.

“The advantage of having the Yamaha CL5 in conjunction with two Rio i/o racks is the ultimate flexibility when interfacing with house PA’s, states Powers. Do you need AES? No problem. Do you need four outputs for your subs? No problem. The list can go on and on.” Powers said that by splitting up the Rio racks, he has eliminated the use of ANY sub-snakes on stage, which makes for a very clean looking stage. “Also, by not having long runs of mic cables before the mic pre’s, I have virtually eliminated any buzzes or hum.”

With regard to the CL’s Premium Rack, Powers is using the Rupert Neve Portico 5043 as a bass compressor and the U76 to compress/level the female leads. “I have been quite impressed with the sound quality of the CL as well as the flexibility the console offers.”

Yamaha CL Digital Console Update V 1.7 Available in December

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. announces the December availability of Version 1.7 software upgrade for the Yamaha CL Series Digital Audio Console. The upgrade, available via free download, is based on significant end user input and will provide enhanced efficiency and versatility along with significant improvements that will be especially valuable for mixing engineers in festival and similar complex event setups. Several of the features implemented in V 1.7 will make the CL an even better console choice for festivals, since many of the new features are already familiar to PM5D users.

New CL V 1.7 features include Selective Load/Save for set up data such as scene memory, libraries, etc., can now be individually loaded from or saved to USB memory providing an efficient way to load complex setup data. The HA Option for changing input patches now makes it possible to select whether the end user wants to use the HA settings from the patched port as is, or copy the channel HA settings to the patched port in order to quickly change input patches when mixing in a fast-paced environment without having to copy HA settings.

“As with all Yamaha Commercial Audio products, updates are implemented based on suggestions primarily from our end users,” states Marc Lopez, Marketing Manager, Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. “Their input is quite essential, now, and for future generation of products.”

CL V 1.7 updates also include: in the Sends On Fader mode, the assignable encoders (Gain/Pan/Assign knobs) can now be used to adjust channel level and panning for sends to stereo buses. Custom Fader Bank setups can be stored to, and recalled from, individual scenes. At busy events that involve multiple engineers, this feature can make it easy to change custom fader bank settings without having to switch users. And, the sends from input channels to buses on which the send point is set to PRE, can now be assigned to DCA groups for muting via a DCA Mute Option for PRE sends.

Other new features in CL V 1.7 include improved Channel Name Display In the Sends On Fader mode where channel ON/OFF status is now indicated in the channel name display. Additionally, a “black” 9th color has been added for the Channel Color Bar. More points are available in the Metering Point field on the meter display with the addition of “Pre GC Meter” and “Post Digital Gain Meter”.

Also in CL V 1.7, the Analog HA gain and Digital HA gain indication have been improved and are both displayed in the Selected Channel View Gain/Patch field at all times. The HPF status of R Series and similar external HA units are shown in the Gain/Patch field as well. DCA/MUTE group and mute name display are now shown in the DCA/Mute Group Assign Mode pop-up display. Improved Channel Link display indicators in the CH Link Mode pop-up display will make it easy to see current link group settings.

In addition to the above new features, CL V 1.7 includes Extended Cue monitor adjustment range that extends from -30 dB to +20 dB. It is now possible to specify whether latched or unlatched external switches are connected to the GPI input ports. And, when mounting I/O devices on the Dante network, the device type can now be detected without the description in the device label, allowing for better customization of names.

Yamaha Steinberg Networkable Recording System Makes AES Debut: ‘NU’ Components Added

NEW YORK—A joint collaboration between Yamaha and Steinberg, NUAGE will make its AES 2013 debut in the Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. booth #2623, at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City. A hardware and software system that adds the power of the Dante audio network to world-class recording, post production, live to tape broadcast, and house of worship recording for re-broadcast, NUAGE is a complete, flexible system that allows engineers to choose and combine components to perfectly match individual application and workflow requirements. The system is currently shipping, and more features have been added to those previously announced.

The first truly networkable recording system, NUAGE consists of hardware work surface components, sleek interface, comprehensive visual feedback, networkable audio interface units, and a software-based digital audio workstation. It offers advanced processing capabilities and superior sonic quality. The Yamaha control surface features a combination of fader and main control units allowing for various system configurations. At the core of NUAGE is Steinberg’s award winning Nuendo digital audio workstation software. Coupled with the power of Dante, this advanced production system provides mix engineers a truly synergistic studio solution. Dante audio networking provides unrestricted system design and expandability both in the studio and in situations where audio is to be shared with live mixing systems.

Yamaha has added two new components to NUAGE. The ADR Mode for the NUAGE Master allows the operator to quickly and easily enable the Nuendo 6 ADR Taker functionality on the Ncs500-CT to provide transport control for the Rehearse, Review and Record modes via the NUAGE Master Transport section. Insert Marker and Insert Cycle Marker buttons are conveniently assigned in the touch screen as well as marker information like Start/End points for cycle markers, Take No. (Number), Character Name, and Dialog. Cue Bus Control is editable from the touch sensitive encoders and the user can easily toggle the ADR functions to the user define buttons and back to the previous assigned functions. The “Marker” button in the numeric keypad section now toggles between “Marker ID” and “Take No.” for easy content location. User Assign Groups of 1-12 and 13-24 from the four banks can now be toggled to the User Define Keys.

The second new feature added is a Yamaha AD8HR mic preamp can now be controlled from the NUAGE Multi-Function Knobs when the “PRE” Button in pressed in the control section. HA Gain, HA Trim, HPF and 48V phantom power can be edited along with LC (Low Cut), HC (High Cut), and Digital Gain. The AD8HR connects to a PC or MAC via a serial connection and is configured in the NUAGE Workgroup Manager.

NUAGE modular architecture and network audio interface enable broad system flexibility. Two types of control surface units can be used individually or in combination, according to system needs. Three types of high-end audio interfaces are available, used individually or in combination for up to 128 channels. 16-channel analog, 16-channel digital, and 8-channel analog + 8-channel digital can be controlled at once with two encoders per channel, or all encoders can be mapped to one or two highlighted channels in the Channel Setting Mode. NUAGE I/O also features advanced JetPLL™ jitter reduction technology for extremely low jitter and superior AD/DA resolution.

NUAGE benefits lead to uncompromised product quality and include 32-bit/192 kHz support for superior sonic quality (Nuendo 6 supports sampling rates up to 384 kHz). Advanced audio interface DSP hardware offers “True Integrated Monitoring” for ultra-low-latency monitoring. The DSP surround processing capabilities provide all the essentials for state-of-the-art surround sound including speaker/level display adjustments and base management. The power of native system processing allows a large number of plug-ins to be used simultaneously across multiple channels/tracks. Nuendo Syncstation provides sample-accurate synchronization for audio and video.

A Dante Accelerator audio interface card can be installed in the computer running the Nuendo DAW to provide extra-low latency multi-channel audio data transfer capacity, advantageous when communicating with NUAGE I/O units. A secondary port can be used to provide redundant connections for failsafe reliability.

NUAGE provides intuitive operation and visual organization for enhanced efficiency. Any 24” monitor can be used with the system. The system incorporates the computer LCD displays for “Extensive Console View” channel strip extension, customizable Nuendo shortcuts that can be freely assigned to numerous User Assignable Keys, Touch Slider functionality for instant channel navigation, touch sensitive faders and encoders, Channel Name Display, and Channel Color Bar. A precision jog wheel supports accurate, error-free editing on the master section. Computers and monitors are not included in the system components.

The system’s space-saving keyboard/mouse editing capabilities as well as compact rack-mount dimensions round out the unique NUAGE system.

A basic NUAGE system has an MSRP of $18,000.

Yamaha CL V1.61 Firmware Upgrade Now Available

NEW YORK—Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. has announced the availability of CL V1.61 firmware upgrade. As of Summer 2013, with Yamaha CL V1.61, it is now possible to perform discovery and patching operations for Shure ULX-D™ digital wireless system receivers such as the ULXD4D and ULXD4Q directly from Yamaha CL Series Digital Consoles via the Dante™ network. Shure and Yamaha have worked together to provide users with more advanced, integrated control capabilities. With Yamaha CL Series firmware version 1.61 and ULX-D firmware version 1.3 now available, it is possible to control discovery and patching for Shure ULXD4D and ULXD4Q receivers directly from CL console touch panel displays without the need for the Dante Controller PC software that had been initially required.

Other new features included in CL V1.61 are Scene Preview functionality, and the Help function is further supported by an on-screen reference guide, which once loaded, resides in the console permanently. The recently launched Ri8-D, Ro8-D input/output boxes and NXAmp with NXDT104 have been added as Dante devices that can be detected/patched into the CL Series. A CUE LEVEL knob has been added to the CUE section, allowing adjustment of the CUE level and can be assigned to a custom fader or user defined knob.

TC Furlong Celebrates 40th Anniversary

LAKE FOREST, Illinois—When TC Furlong started his company as the sole proprietor back in 1973 after graduating high school, he and best friend Tom Danley (as in Danley Labs) developed the Steamer loudspeaker, which is still in use today. “I’ve had a keen interest in making things louder since age 12, states TC Furlong. I was and still am fascinated by the idea of amplifying a sound source faithfully. There are a lot of obstacles in achieving high quality sound reinforcement, so it’s always a worthy challenge. Since the mid 60’s, I’ve built a lot of loudspeaker cabinets in the quest for vivid fidelity or in the case of musical instrument speakers, a lush tone.”

During the mid-seventies to mid-eighties, Furlong both manufactured and played as a professional pedal steel player. He founded a regional country/pop band called Jump in the Saddle, and the band went on to achieve a national Top 15 hit with “The Curly Shuffle”.

Another of Furlong’s earliest audio solutions was the development of a sound isolation helmet that would enable an engineer to mix a live radio broadcast while at the front-of-house mix position. It weighed close to 100 pounds. By the late eighties, Furlong’s design and interest in all things audio led to his full-time focus on professional audio sales and system design. Customers were requesting rental products, requiring his support of live events, box sales of his products and those of manufacturers he represents, and even sound reinforcement installations. In the early years, he represented Shure, Ramsa, Soundcraft, Ashley, and many others. The Company is a leader in the spread of wireless microphone systems, and as such, has been a long-standing Sennheiser, Shure, and Lectrosonics dealer.

“Professional audio products have very much evolved since I first started in 1973,” says Furlong. “Probably the two most dramatic examples are digital mixing consoles and loudspeakers. A live sound mixer can have infinitely more mixing tools and do it with a 90% reduction in size and weight. Loudspeaker manufacturers have developed elegant rigging systems that allow systems to be deployed quickly and safely; nothing like that was available in the 70’s.”

A national company, located in the Chicago, Illinois area, TC Furlong currently employs 12 full-time staff members comprised solely of sound engineers, technicians, and industry veterans—each equipped with the knowledge to design the perfect audio solution for their customers’ audio needs. Ariz cites features like the Dante Network’s ease of use, the console’s 24 mix busses, the ability to choose the direct outs and insert points, and its preamps. “The console sounds great. Lots of clean headroom, very dynamic and the new premium effects are exciting,” says Ariz.

“We had been looking for a digital console to replace the current analog console, and was pleased that Yamaha was able to provide an on-site demo of the CL5 and DANTE IO for our engineers and management,” adds Alex Joyce, Tech Manager for TheBlaze. “After the decision was made, NEP’s talented engineers pre-wired all patch bays and remote IO during our normal production schedule to allow for the installation of the CL5 over a three-day weekend, replacing the current analog console. We were under a very tight deadline to resume full production, and Yamaha provided an experienced technical rep on the launch day to ensure it was a success. We are very pleased with the Dugan-MY16 card option, as this feature greatly improves the intelligibility of our productions. Unique Yamaha AFC System Installed at Buffalo State

NEW YORK—SUNY College at Buffalo recently installed a Yamaha AFC (Active Field Control) system in its 200-seat Ciminelli Recital Hall. The recital hall, located within Rockwell Hall, has been designed to accommodate small ensemble and solo performances by students of the Music Department and research in multi-channel sound diffusion. Rockwell Hall is one of four of the original buildings encompassing Buffalo State and houses the departments of music and art conservation as well as an 850-seat performing arts center.

AVL Design of Penfield, N.Y. designed the initial system with installation assistance from subcontractor AV Solutions (Rochester, N.Y.). Boynton Pro Audio of Norwich, N.Y. provided the system components. Joe Rimstidt of Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. and engineers from Yamaha Japan completed the final AFC design, and with assistance from colleague Steve Seable, completed system tuning in late August. Brian Wittmer, head of the College’s facilities department, functioned as project manager.

“The recital hall is located in a section of an existing building that had limited height, states AVL’s Seth Waltz. The room also expanded during design and became quite long. Room design was targeted to provide a diffuse sound field, but even with our best efforts, it was apparent from the models that the design would not allow extended low frequency warmth or good lateral energy in the back of the room due to the limited cubic volume and length of the space. The length of the room was also challenging, as we wanted the experience in the rear seats to mimic the front sections. The Yamaha AFC System was introduced to allow tuning for RT60 as well as added ER (early reflection) and lateral ER to the rear of the room, which would be missing due to the length.”

The AFC3 system designed specifically for the Ciminelli Recital Hall includes four permanent microphones, 38 speakers plus 2 subwoofers. Some of the speakers serve multiple purposes, being AFC speakers when in AFC mode, and being part of the hall’s 7.1 Surround system when in that mode. The original design included four AFC2 processors, but after the release of AFC3, the school opted to upgrade two of the AFC units to AFC3. In total, there are five AFC units, five IPA8200 amplifiers, three Dante cards, and one AD8HR mic preamp. The school was very interested in being able to route signals to individual speakers for their electronic music program so the Dante cards were added to the AFC units to allow them to route signals that would be mixed with the AFC signals and output to any of the individual AFC speakers they may select.

The complete system includes both an early reflection system and reverberation enhancement system. The two systems are intertwined so the 20 audience speakers can receive a mix of the ER and REV signals. On the stage/ performance area, there are six speakers on the sidewalls that receive ER signals only and 12 speakers overhead for the reverberation enhancement.
Several Yamaha DME (Digital Mixing Engine) units equipped with various MY cards facilitate an extensively flexible routing system enabling signal routing from various consoles or computers to the recording studio, the AFC speakers, or any of the speakers in the house surround system.

“This is no ordinary AFC3 system, states Tom Kostusiak, Production Manager for the Performing Arts Center who also teaches classes in sound recording and reinforcement for the Music Department. The recital hall is in a renovated art gallery space on the third floor of Rockwell Hall. The ceiling height was limited to 16 feet, so there was no way to achieve the “space” required to allow natural acoustics to occur.”

When not being used for its intended purpose (AFC), Kostusiak said they would have the ability to address each speaker independently over the Dante network designed by Yamaha. “This is going to allow our electronic music faculty to utilize the speakers as a 52.1 Surround mix system directly from Tomas Henriques’ (head of the Digital Music Program) computer as well as our Yamaha DM1000 or Avid SC48 consoles. In fact, we will be able to utilize multiple computers as well as both consoles as input devices feeding directly to any speaker in the room. In addition to the AFC3 system, we can also use the room as a 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 mix room and, of course, the 52.1 configuration. The associated recording studio at Rockwell Hall allows the school to use the recital hall as a live room for sound recording classes as well.”

“We have given the Music Department access to each and every one of the speakers in the space, so they are composing for a multi-channel audio system.” said Mickey Ames, one of the project managers for AV Solutions. “You can isolate the clarinet in speaker 42 and the drums in speaker 10, for example, and that is what makes this particular installation so incredibly unique.”

The initial idea of converting the space to 52.1 developed out of a suggestion from Henriques. “The modification of Yamaha’s AFC system to allow the integration of all the speakers in the Ciminelli Recital Hall as a 52.1 surround system, effectively turns the hall into a unique space for research in sound diffusion as well as a performance venue for works that feature multi-channel sound, Henriques states. The 52.1 surround system will enable student composers to write film scores that use a high number of discrete output channels, a trend increasingly found in today’s movies. It will also provide the means for the Music Department to foster international conferences and colloquia in the area of sound diffusion, virtual acoustics and psychoacoustics.”

Buffalo State Music Department offers a minor in Digital Music Production with a track in Electronic Music Composition and a track in Sound Recording. This program also features a very sought after Digital Music Ensemble that uses state-of-the-art electronic instruments. The growing popularity of the minor is steering the department into offering a major and a Master’s degree in Music Technology. “The Ciminelli Hall with its 52.1 surround system is a great addition to the department’s facilities, one which will attract students nationwide,” adds Henriques. “This is the first time we have incorporated the mixing of audio signals with the AFC signals for routing to the AFC speakers, enabling the music program to experiment with the very creative ideas they have for performances in the space,” notes Joe Rimstidt, Systems Design Engineer, Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc.
