As announced earlier, Christie Brio makes its global debut at InfoComm. Christie Brio sets new standards in meeting room presentation and collaboration, making it easier than ever to pool resources with colleagues anywhere without dongles, software or drivers to slow things down. Information including presentations, audio, digital whiteboard, and videoconferencing – added to any display attached to a Christie Brio node – are shared with all displays in the same meeting.

Christie Projection Technology Leads the Market

The Christie E Series of 1-chip DLP® projectors are another show highlight. Christie Launches Its First Mobile App: Christie InControl

Christie® unveils the Christie InControl™ projector mobile app for applicable iOS devices at InfoComm 2013 this week. Christie InControl is aimed at rental & staging customers using Christie 3-chip DLP® M Series and J Series projectors in various applications including trade shows, live events and projection mapping. Fixed installation applications such as classrooms and boardrooms, houses of worship, government facilities and museums will also enjoy the convenience of controlling the projector wirelessly.

The Christie InControl™ App provides a responsive user interface to commonly used projector functionality such as; power on/off, shutter control, test pattern selection, and lens zoom and focus, in addition to more advanced projector functionality like 2D keystone and color management.

“Christie InControl gives users fingertip projector management of single or multiple projectors from their personal iPad, iPod or iPhone device over Wi-Fi” said Joel St-Denis, value add product manager, Christie. “Users can scan for available projectors on their local Wi-Fi network to add them to a group, or to manually type in the IP address of the desired projector. The App based Wi-Fi control provides a flexible alternative to infrared projector remotes, which can sometimes be out of range or misplaced.”

New Christie Brio Meeting Room Solution Lets Participants Share More

The days of passing cables and adapters across meeting room tables, installing additional software, rebooting laptops, and apologizing for delayed or bungled presentations have ended with the launch of Christie Brio, a new meeting presentation and collaboration system that takes the hassles out of single and multi-site workplace meetings.

Developed by Christie®, a world leader in display and visualization solutions, Brio enables multiple attendees at meetings to run audio and video presentations from their own devices, without scrambling for matching display cables and adapters, plugging in dongles or installing and configuring new software to get it working.

Straightforward to install and use, Brio uses wired or wireless connections to automatically share multiple presentations showing simultaneously on either one or two meeting room screens. Whether participants use Macs or PCs, iPads or Android tablets, or smartphones, presentations can be added to a meeting as a thought occurs, their information showing on that meeting room display in seconds.

Brio is being unveiled this week at the InfoComm 2013 Pro-AV trade show in Orlando, Fla., and starts shipping this summer.

Share and collaborate like never before
Using a single, low-cost hardware Brio node, any meeting room can automatically show up to five computer screens on that room’s display.”Once the content is processed by the node it can also be made available to other Brio nodes via ethernet. In this way a variety of information – including PowerPoint and Keynote presentations, audio, digital whiteboards, and videoconferencing sessions – can be shown on any display attached to the Brio node, and shared with all the displays in the same meeting.

Brio nodes can be connected via network to multiple worksites on a corporate campus, or across the country. All Brio nodes added to a meeting will see the same presentations, and any Brio node user can share a presentation in the meeting. Brio makes interactive collaboration across multiple rooms and offices straightforward, seamless and immediate, plus the cost of Brio nodes is low enough to equip even remote users in home offices.

Brio also takes full advantage of interactive whiteboard technology. Users in multiple locations can work together on notes and sketches. Any Brio node connected to a meeting allows users, anywhere, to contribute to that whiteboard session.

“We’ve all been in meetings that were slowed down or fell apart because of the many hassles that come up when multiple people with their own laptops and software try to get presentations successfully running on meeting room screens. I’ve seen cheers break out when it all actually works,” said Christian Merrill, Christie Brio product manager.

“Brio changes that, and makes it easy for multiple persons to run presentations at meetings – even across several corporate sites on a network and since Brio is all network-driven, it does not require users to install any new software or use a USB device to make it all work,” added Merrill. “The moment you introduce new software inside a corporate environment, you can have issues with approved software and administration rights. Visitors who need to run a presentation might even be unable to download the needed software, and many people with company issued laptops don’t have admin permissions to add new software. With Brio, if you can get on the network, you are good to go for making and contributing to presentations.”

Automated Setup
Connecting laptops to a Brio node automatically allows their screens to be shared with all displays connected in a Brio meeting, and the platform intelligently displays material in the correct aspect ratio. For multi-site meetings participants use an intuitive network interface to login and set up that is as simple as making a phone call.

Brio also fully supports smart devices like tablets running Windows 8, Apple iOS and Android. Both the node control and presentation connection work the same for tablets and smartphones as they do for PCs and Macs.

“As we thought about what we wanted in a meeting technology, there were three things that were very clear,” said Kathryn Cress, vice president, global and corporate marketing, Christie. “One, it had to be easily accessible, with no special training or driver software that users had to install. Two, it had to tear down the existing communication barriers so that sharing information became effortless. And three, it had to allow users to share multiple types of content. The ultimate goal in developing Brio was to ensure that all participants could share whatever they needed to—to ultimately be able to share more.”

Versatile Playback Capabilities allow participants to share more
Christie Brio nodes fit in standard 19-inch IT racks or can sit on their own, packaged to look good on meeting rooms credenzas. The system supports dual-link and single-link DVI, DisplayPort and HDMI. Brio can handle a maximum of five sources.

Brio’s playback quality is exceptional, with the option of running uncompressed 1080p video sources. That means video plays as it was intended, with no dropped frames.

Brio removes another meeting room pain point; i.e., running audio from tiny laptop speakers and hoping all the meeting participants can hear it. With Brio, audio input is streamed through the wireless protocol or connected to Brio with standard jacks. The combined audio output is then connected to the meeting room sound system, and meeting participants still maintain individual control of their presentation’s audio volume. Audio is also shared with attached Brio nodes.

Mission 26 Accomplished For Christie and Endeavour at the California Science Center

The Space Shuttle Endeavour’s final journey is captured in a compelling nine-minute video being shown on a Christie Roadster HD10K-M 3-chip DLP® projector at the California Science Center in the Mission 26: The Big Endeavour exhibit. The film follows the shuttle as it flies over Los Angeles – transported on top of a NASA Boeing 747 shuttle carrier aircraft – before landing at Los Angeles International Airport and taken on its 12-mile, three-day voyage to the Science Center with a cheering crowd of over 1.5 million who lined the route. The Space Shuttle Endeavour flew 25 missions into space, deployed three satellites and orbited Earth 4,671 times. Mission 26 refers to its final journey through the streets of Inglewood and Los Angeles to its permanent home at the Science Center’s Samuel Oschin Space Shuttle Endeavour Display Pavilion where it will inspire future generations of scientists, innovators and engineers.

David Knight and Christie HD10K-M Follow the Voyage to the California Science Center

At the Science Center, guests visit the Mission 26 exhibit, which features more than 80 large-scale photographs depicting Endeavour’s journey. Inside the gallery is the Mission 26 Theater where the new film is running continually throughout the day. Following the movie, visitors can walk downstairs, visit various exhibits and then enter a large pavilion where the Shuttle is displayed.

“We did the film because people love to visually relive this moment in history. It was the first and last time ever something like this would happen on urban city streets and it brought all kinds of people together from all over the world. This commemorates that and gives those who didn’t get to see it a chance to experience it as well,” said David Knight, producer, Endeavour Project.

Knight led a large filming project that documented the entire move-process, beginning with Endeavour being mounted atop the 747 at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and culminating with her installation inside the Shuttle Pavilion. He pursued the project as a labor of love and the response was overwhelming. The 150-person film crew, equipment and everything involved in the project were all donated.

“For the movie that plays on a nearly 30-foot wide silver screen on the wall – people enter from one side, sit down and watch the movie, and then walk out the other side,” said Knight. “The walls don’t go all the way to the ceiling and hanging above the back wall is the HD10K-M. It is front-projecting and shows the movie in 2D with the plan to make a 3D rendering of the movie, and then we’ll switch over to 3D.”

The most compact in its class, the Christie HD10K-M provides true HD native resolution (1920 x 1080) with up to 10,000:1 contrast ratio, dual mercury lamps, embedded Christie Twist™ image warping and edge-blending, built-in portrait capabilities and is 3D upgradable.

“I appreciate the brightness and color depth of the Christie projector: the Mission 26 Theater installation utilizes a wall-painted screen, thus the demands for output power are extremely critical. Two other projector-brands were tried and the Christie difference is stunning,” said Knight.

California Science Center Foundation executive William Harris explained the success of the Shuttle’s final trip and the movie capturing the entire event.

“No Shuttle has ever been available for up close viewing like Endeavour here; you can walk right under and around it. Other shuttles have been available for viewing such as in the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. but they are roped off and you can’t go underneath,” he said. “Endeavour is mounted low to the ground, you can actually walk right under it and can read the numbers on the individual thermal tiles, of which there are over 20,000.

“There has always been a lot of pride in the Shuttle program and what mankind can do when we set our minds to it,” continued Harris. “We flew Endeavour throughout California atop the 747 before landing at Los Angeles Airport (LAX). An estimated almost four million people saw it fly over. The number of people who have seen all this is absolutely staggering.

“We are all very pleased – and with up to 25,000 visitors per day it’s important that we have a highly reliable, extended-duty-cycle solution. Christie has delivered that.”

The Mission 26 exhibition runs through Labor Day, September 2, 2013.

Christie Helps Engage Participants at T.I.N.Y – An Interactive Multimedia Public Art Installation by Artist Garson Yu at New York’s Pier 57

At the Marina at Pier 57, Christie® M-Series HD projectors are helping visitors “travel” through New York City by creating a multi-sensory experience for The Interactive New York (T.I.N.Y) exhibition, an interactive multimedia art installation by video artist Garson Yu. The exhibit is inspired by New York City as a living organism, and will let visitors interact with video and sound reminiscent of traveling in the city.

The interim art space, created at the entryway to Pier 57, features a “magic carpet” sculptural installation of 36 hanging shipping containers designed by Madrid-based architecture firm CH+QS Arquitectos. Eight Christie HD10K-M 1080 HD 3-chip DLP® projectors create a special interactive experience within the space, projecting moving images onto the containers of everyday life in New York, including subway scenes and scenes of childhood memories. Displayed in brilliant HD and using the projectors’ embedded warping, blending and color matching capabilities, the images help to simulate a virtual subway train – with visitors traveling from end to end, passing through the containers as one would walk through the different cars of the train. There is an ambient audio track built around the rhythmic rumble of a subway train and layered with city sounds. Walking further into the installation, visitors become participants, and are encouraged to yell and make different vocal sounds into microphones that trigger motion of the visuals.

“We are thrilled that the versatility, brightness, and interactive qualities of the Christie M- Series projectors have provided Garson Yu with an ideal medium for expressing and realizing his artistic vision,” said Kathryn Cress, vice president of global and corporate marketing for Christie. “His exhibit has brought to life a unique and creative idea that can now be enjoyed by many, with each visitor engaging with the experience in their own personal way.”

Garson Yu said, “As a student, I always wanted to design children’s playgrounds, and this is an opportunity to create something almost like an interactive carnival for families and people of all ages to come play and have fun. My hope is for this to evoke the richness of a full range of memories and emotions. I’m bringing the kind of thinking behind the film projects that I work on in Hollywood, and the Christie projectors are essential to helping me create an immersive, interactive experience that affects everyone based on their personal memories. New York is an important part of my artistic life, and it is great to come back here with this show.”

Christie and The Sextant Group Help North Carolina State University Build Research Library of the Future

Large-Scale Display Visualization and Content Create Collaborative Technology Incubator

CYPRESS, Calif. – (June 3, 2013) – Christie® and The Sextant Group are helping redefine the components of a research library at North Carolina State University’s James B. Hunt Jr. Library in Raleigh, North Carolina. Achieving the school’s goal of securing a competitive advantage by equipping students with collaborative research tools for solving problems in today’s tech-driven society, the library sets a new standard in combining technological innovation, student engagement and striking architecture using Christie® MicroTiles®, Christie projectors, and Christie Spyder X20 video processors.

NCSU Hunt Library - Immersion Theater

According to Maurice York, Head of Information Technology, NCSU Libraries, North Carolina State University, the space was carefully designed as a purpose-built environment where students and faculty can interact with top-of-the-line digital technology to further their research and education.

York said, “Our goal was to, figuratively, ‘blow the walls off’ the library. This meant large-scale display visualization and content to create a truly collaborative technology incubator. In addition, the new central facility had to utilize open technologies, continuously repurposed, that could work for molecular dynamics one day and gaming that same day or next day.”

Christie Central to the Solution and Success of Project

With AVI-SPL as integrator, design engineer The Sextant Group, project consultant, selected Christie to fit the extensive needs of the project, starting with Christie MicroTiles – the versatile digital building blocks that are configurable into any design or shape in any indoor environment. With each MicroTile measuring approximately 12-inches tall by 16 inches wide by 10 inches deep, they met the tight space required while achieving that ‘wow’ factor the University was looking for.

“The school wanted the highest resolution and highest color depth displays, but space was at a premium and the technology needed to be versatile enough to fit into various rooms and be used for various purposes,” said design engineer Scott Frey.

NCSU Hunt Library - Game Lab

Once the Christie MicroTiles were chosen, the project evolved into Christie projection systems and Christie Spyder X20 video processors as crucial solutions to achieving an engaging digital library. The projectors are now helping immerse students and faculty in creative and interactive environments that can be reconfigured and repurposed at any time. The Christie Spyder X20 processors ensure the full potential of the Christie projectors and MicroTiles walls are realized, with their ability to blend, window, mix, and scale any source format and then route the signal to any destination device or combination of display devices quickly and easily.

“Advanced digital display media make learning more accessible – even fun – to students and act as a catalyst for ideas, creativity, and problem solving,” said Kathryn Cress, vice president, global & corporate marketing, Christie. “At the Hunt Library, every pixel is dedicated to the students, with Christie playing a central role in bringing to fruition the groundbreaking concepts. Christie visual display solutions in the Hunt Library:

- The iPearl Immersion Theater is used to showcase student exhibits, faculty theories and work, and to publicize speaking events to students and faculty on a 16-unit wide by 7-unit tall Christie MicroTiles installation lining a curved wall at the main pathway entrance.
- The Game Lab includes a 16-unit wide by 5-unit high MicroTiles display. Designed as a place for play, it also serves as a vital resource for advancement in the study of games and design experimentation on a large, high-resolution scale. A Christie Spyder X20 video processor gives users complete control over the displayed content.
- The Art Wall is a 15-unit wide by 8-unit tall MicroTiles wall located above the “ASK US” service point. Used to display photography and artwork of faculty and students, the Art Wall also features a welcome screen for visitors.
- Outside the Teaching and Visualization Lab is a 9-unit wide by 10-unit tall MicroTiles array configured in columns and separated by a wall. Used to display artistic video pieces and animation, the wall also displays what takes place inside the lab, which features 10 Christie Mirage WU7K-M 3-chip DLP® stereoscopic projectors as part of a 270-degree immersive environment with seamless, blended images. A Christie Spyder X20 video processor controls the content.
- Inside the Creativity Studio, two Christie Mirage WU7K–M 3D projectors and four Christie DHD800 projectors have been installed and are displaying impeccably clear visual presentations by both students and faculty.
- A 4-unit wide by 4-unit tall MicroTiles array acting as a Creative Sandbox for a variety of uses.
- A 400-person Lecture Hall is fitted with two Christie Mirage WU12K-M 3D projectors – lighting up one of the largest campus screens. Christie Twist™, a solution that enables full image warping and advanced edge-blending, ensures perfect pixel alignment onto the curved projected surface. A Christie HD7K-J projector was installed in a separate, 100-person meeting room.

The completed James B. Hunt Jr. Library has been a unanimous success at NC State, with faculty, students, and visitors in awe of the stunning visuals and technology. The university has achieved its goal of creating an iconic space where students and faculty from all disciplines can collaborate on new ideas, experiment with technology on a large scale, engage through course work and research, and showcase their work in a big way.

Christie CTO Paul Salvini Keynote Speaker at New High Performance Displays Conference in Vancouver

Christie®, a world leader in visual display technology, is pleased to announce that Dr. Paul Salvini, its Chief Technology Officer, will be a keynote speaker and a panelist at the High Performance Displays Conference taking place in Vancouver, B.C., on May 23.

High Performance per se is a new topic for the Society for Information Displays (SID) Market Focus Conference Series this year, as part of Display Week 2013, located at the Vancouver Convention Centre from May 19 to 24. Dr. Salvini will deliver the 10.00 a.m. keynote address for the morning session on the 23rd at the one-day High Displays Conference, where the focus will be on the “visual interface” – the performance characteristics of displays that enable differentiable improvements for the user’s visual experience.

Following his keynote address, Dr. Salvini will be one of four display sector leaders taking part in a moderated panel called ‘Great Thinkers.’ The four panelists will be challenged to identify the display performance parameters that “truly enable enhanced human interaction with display devices.”

Dr. Salvini is eminently qualified to discuss the future of high performance displays. At Christie he is CTO and leads the company’s research and innovation activities. He is passionate about the creation of compelling shared visual experiences across multiple domains including cinema, visualization and simulation. Prior to his appointment with Christie in June 2011, Dr. Salvini was CTO at Side Effects Software. He has led a 3-time academy award winning team of engineers and software developers in advancing the art and science of visual effect in feature films.

Dr. Salvini is President of the University of Waterloo Alumni Council and holds an appointment as an Adjunct Professor in the graduate school of computer science at the University of Toronto. Christie Interactivity Kit – A Touch of Brilliance

The Christie Interactivity Kit is a modular solution that transforms nearly any large-format display into a multi-touch surface. The field-installable kit simply attaches around the display wall perimeter and plugs into a computer USB port without the need for drivers. Windows® 7 automatically recognizes the Christie Interactivity Kit as a multi-touch device and no manual calibration of sensors or cameras is required. Using breakthrough Baanto™ ShadowSense™ technology, Christie Interactivity Kit offers excellent performance with high touch accuracy and fast response times that support up to 18 touches on a large-format display.

Configurable into 84 different sizes, the kit accommodates practically any video wall up to 21.4 feet wide and 6 feet high, or a 16-units wide by 6-units high Christie MicroTiles array. The kit is part of a special display at the celebrated Cleveland Museum of Art, which features a 40-foot wide multi-touch screen comprising two 15-units wide by 5-units tall Christie MicroTiles video walls using Christie Interactivity Kit and a smaller interactive ‘Line and Shape’ Christie MicroTiles display for children to engage with that also uses Christie Interactivity Kit.

Christie is demonstrating projection mapping featuring colorful and exciting images thrown on a mini-pyramid; illustrating the wide range of complex artistic displays made possible using blending and warping technology. The mapping demonstration will utilize a Christie HD14K-M.

Light Iron Chooses Christie Solaria Projection For Postproduction Needs

Light Iron, a leading postproduction house based in Los Angeles, has expanded its use of Christie Solaria® Series digital cinema projectors offering rich, saturated color, high brightness and sharp, 4K resolution to its ever growing clientele.

“We’ve used other manufacturer’s 4K projectors when 4K projectors first hit the streets, but the fact of the matter is it’s more important to be the best at something than the first. And the best 4K solution is exactly what Christie brings to the market. With its reliable and proven name, it was an easy decision to make Christie the standard for our screening rooms in both Los Angeles and New York City, with Christie Solaria 2K and 4K projectors in operation at both locations, including a Christie Solaria CP4230, which will be highlighted at the official unveiling of our new facility in New York City tonight,” said Michael Cioni, CEO, Light Iron.

“Our product flexibility is gaining us a lot of converts in the postproduction space. One of our key differentiators here is that the user doesn’t have to swap input cards when switching between uncompressed and packaged cinema content, as two slots are standard on the Solaria 4K projectors,” said Don Shaw, senior director, Product Management with Christie’s Entertainment Solutions group. “And as one of these connections is a professional-grade quad 3G-SDI connect, Christie can ensure that post facilities have a robust and convenient digital interface for flawless viewing of 4K digital cinema or alternative content.”

After four years in Los Angeles, Light Iron has expanded into New York to help serve the postproduction community there. A pioneer in 4K postproduction projection, Light Iron hopes to demonstrate to the NYC cinema and postproduction community the solid workflows that 4K enables and how easy, cost-effective and quick it is to implement a 4K workflow as an alternative to 2K workflows, which don’t facilitate 4K digital content as well. Light Iron’s New York screening room has a 35-foot throw and a Microperf screen 16 feet wide by 9 feet. The 4K content is played out of a Quantel Pablo Rio with AJA Corvid Ultra video card, while 4K content is fed via 4 by 3G-SDI. The facility at 580 Broadway will be unveiled to a broad cross-section of the industry at its grand opening tonight.

“Ours is the only post facility designed for 4K from the ground up. While working with 4K files is becoming common, viewing pixel-for-pixel results is not. The Christie CP4230 expands Light Iron’s creative freedom by enabling real-time 4K monitoring in a calibrated DCI space. Since that’s where the cinema is headed, that’s where Light Iron needs to be. There’s really no one else on either coast that feels as strongly about this as we do,” said Cioni.

Christie Continues To Lead The Way In Visual Display System Education For Simulation

Christie will host the fourth SIM University training forum May 7-8 at the University of Central Florida

Christie®, a leader in simulation projection display solutions, today announced that it is hosting the fourth SIM University training forum, a free educational event taking place May 7-8 dedicated to the world of visual display requirements for the simulation industry at the Institute for Simulation and Training at the University of Central Florida.

Zoran Veselic, vice president of Christie’s Visual Environments, commented: “The capabilities and requirements of visual displays in the simulation industry are not only complex, but continuously advancing. Bringing together experts and participants in this field by way of an educational forum enables personnel such as visual, systems or design engineers and program managers to gain a more in-depth understanding of system parameters and metrics, for instance, and be better equipped to specify technology that will successfully meet system requirements. The event also expands our own knowledge of industry needs and priorities so that we can adapt and create new solutions for our customers.”

Based on participants’ feedback and positive responses, Christie will introduce a new format, which extends the event to one-and-a-half days. The first part is a half day that is dedicated to understanding the basics of display technology and is designed for those with entry-level experience in visual display systems for simulation or those interested in a refresher on display technology. Day two is focused on intermediate and advanced subject matter content or for anyone who attends the half-day session the day prior.
