Christie MicroTiles – A Towering Presence
As the atrium’s commanding centerpiece, the built-in 5 units wide by 30 units high (6.5 feet wide by 30 feet high), digital video wall incorporates 150 award-winning Christie® MicroTiles®. These eye-catching, digital building blocks enable architects and integrators to incorporate stunning video into their designs and builds. Combining the strengths of both DLP® and LED technology, MicroTiles can reproduce 115 percent of the NTSC color gamut, exceeding typical LCD flat panels by more than 50 percent. Each display unit automatically detects its neighbours, and self-calibrates for color and brightness to optimize the overall presentation. To keep the massive three-storey installation secured to the wall, rp Visuals Solutions, working with Christie’s Research and Innovation group designed and installed a rear-mounting bracket with steel-support beams. Toronto’s Westbury National Show Systems project managed the installation on behalf of the University of Waterloo.

Christie Solutions Powering and Managing Christie MicroTiles behind the scenes
In addition to the Christie MicroTiles in the atrium, several other Christie products make up the technology mix on campus. The Christie-designed media management system, which when used with the Christie Spyder X20 video processor allows students to switch from multiple zones of high-resolution and low-resolution content simultaneously, or to drive the entire wall with uniform resolution and portray dramatic three-storey tall images. The students also have a range of options for publishing content onto the canvas. Christie Jumpstart content management software makes it easy to put stunning, high resolution content onto a multi-display or large tiled digital canvas. 55” flat panels create PIE concept for control room environment
The Christie PIE (Personal Immersive Environment) concept at the Stratford Campus features a four-panel arrangement using Christie FHD551-X HD LCD 55” flat panels in portrait mode for a roughly 90 degree field of view (FOV). The PIE is currently being used to monitor and program the content that is featured on the showpiece digital wall. Easily flipped into landscape to suit the user’s needs, it is a low-cost faceted display system that is perfect for control room environments.

Christie in the classrooms and on-foot
Six Christie LWU505 3LCD projectors, with premium features, high resolution in a widescreen format are ceiling mounted at the Stratford Campus. The LWU505 is compact, full featured making it a perfect presentation devise. Stratford Campus incorporated the Christie LW401 for its low maintenance and low cost of ownership to be used in mobile situations due to is portable design, making it easy to bring presentations from classroom to classroom. With the projector’s various options of wireless capability, PC-Less presentation via USB port or content delivery when installed on a network. It also provides a crucial feature of displaying campus wide notifications when integrated to the network.

Christie’s Dave Muscat, senior director of sales for Canada, who participated in the opening of the campus, recalls people’s reaction to the brilliant fireworks on the three-storey wall when they were illuminated for the first time during the opening celebration. “It was a very magical moment for me to see our MicroTiles in a higher education setting and knowing that Christie’s products will make a difference in advancing students’ and researchers’ knowledge of digital media. Christie Technology Weaves a Magical Holographic Image of Tribal Storytelling at Tillicum Village

Christie® is bringing the past to life at Tillicum Village, a Native American cultural experience, with holographic images powered by two Christie HD10K-M Series 3-chip DLP® projectors. Using built-in Christie AutoStack™ and Christie Twist™, the projectors cast holographic images onto a Musion screen of a storyteller interacting with live actors and drummers throughout the performance on stage, helping capture unique tribal traditions. Located on Blake Island in Puget Sound, Washington, Tillicum Village and its Long House Theater present the history, tradition and culture of the Coast Salish tribes located along the state’s western border.

Tradition Meets High Tech
The 50-year-old, 450-person wooden theater – complete with dirt stage and 18-year-old soundtrack – needed a complete makeover that included the installation of a new Christie projection system.

According to Maureen Black, marketing director at Tillicum Village, “The theater is magical because of its age and rustic setting, but we needed to bring it up to modern standards. Part of this meant revamping the entire live performance to better showcase the traditions and culture of the Salish community in a way that is more relevant to today’s more tech-savvy generation. We wanted to bring the vibrant and ever-changing nature of native culture to life on stage, and technology would help us do that – but the show had to remain authentic.”

Tempest and Christie Partner for Precision
Integration partner Tempest Technologies chose Christie HD digital projectors as part of its 3D hologram system to deliver Tillicum Village’s vision.

“Tillicum Village really wanted to get that ‘wow’ factor in there, rather than just have people performing. When they decided they wanted 3D holographic technology, we didn’t hesitate to steer them toward Christie and its Christie Twist technology,” said Bart Black, audiovisual technology consultant, Tempest Technologies.

“The only way we could achieve the right contrast and align the images perfectly was to utilize Christie Twist. It allowed us to adjust where the images hit on the bounce surface to create a perfect, seamless image. Another important aspect was the tech operators having an easy mechanism to realign the images before each show. With one button, Christie AutoStack allows them to realign everything in 90 seconds without calling a projectionist to the island.”

Christie AutoStack is a camera-based solution and intuitive user interface that achieves accurate blending of multiple projectors. Used in conjunction with the Christie Twist™ warping and blending solution, AutoStack supports various screen sizes and aspect ratios, utilizing screen points for quick geometric calibration. In addition, it supports horizontal and vertical blending, with a live camera preview to aid in quick setup.

Christie Roadster HD14K-J 3-Chip DLP Projectors Provide Exceptional Brightness and Sharp Images for Casas Church

Christie® is pleased to announce the selection of its projection technology for Tucson, Arizona-based Casas Church. A 61-year-old Christian ministry, Casas was looking for powerful display technology to light up the large stage of its spacious and modern 2,500-seat sanctuary and worship center.

Dissatisfied with the low brightness and low-resolution images provided by their old projectors, the church leaders were immediately impressed with the quality of the Christie Roadster HD14K-J 3-chip DLP® projectors. They praised the superior, high-definition image and outstanding brightness of the Roadster solution that allowed them to replace the previous three-projector/three screen setup with only two Roadster HD14K-J projectors – each lighting up a 19-foot 5-inch by 11-foot wide-format screen positioned above the stage, one on each side.

Casas Church Upgrades with Christie Projection

Phoenix-based Audio Video Resources (AVR) recommended a new HD projection system based on a dual-screen configuration that provides a better viewing experience for the congregation – and the Christie Roadster HD14K-J proved the perfect solution.

“It was a no-brainer to choose Christie when you looked at performance and cost,” said Chris Henley, account manager, AVR. “We did a demo of the projectors that provided a dramatic and convincing case for choosing Christie versus the competition. Christie Matrix StIM Projection System Facilitates the Royal Australia Air Force Wedgetail 737 (E-7A) Flight Trainer Simulator MCQFS Level 5 Accreditation Achievement

Christie, a global leader in visual display solutions, has played an instrumental role in helping the Royal Australia Air Force (RAAF) Wedgetail AEW&C 737 (E-7A) Operational Flight Trainer (OFT) to retain its FSD-1 Level 5 accreditation with its new visual system.

Thales and Christie Digital Systems Australia Pty. Ltd. (Christie’s new Australian subsidiary that was formerly known as VR Solutions Pty. Ltd.) and a partner on the Wedgetail visual upgrade project, replaced the simulator’s calligraphic CRT projectors with a Christie Matrix StIM LED illuminated projection system. A new COTS-based image generation system running ThalesViewNG real-time software was also installed.

Operating on the proven technology of the Thales 737NG-based flight simulator and Christie’s three-channel projection system, the Wedgetail OFT equips RAAF flight crews with operational realism in a fully representative cockpit with all the audio, visual and motion cues of the service environment. The new visual system continues to provide flight training sequences that are not adequately or safely conducted in flight, including aircraft emergencies, air-to-air refueling operations and electronic warfare self-protection operations.

“In addition to providing significantly better color and brightness uniformity, sharper imagery, and imperceptible edge blending. , the new projection system delivers unsurpassed reliability and growth potential and ultimately lower lifecycle costs,” noted Michael Otero of Thales Australia.

Christie Awarded QuantaDyn Contract to Supply U.S. Air National Guard with 10 New Christie Matrix StIM WQXGA Projectors for Joint Terminal Attack Controller Program

Christie®, who introduced the world’s first DLP® simulation projection system with LED illumination, today announced that QuantaDyn Corporation, an engineering firm specializing in training simulation, has awarded Christie the contract to provide the projection system for the First Article Unit of the Air National Guard’s Advanced Joint Terminal Attack Controller Training System (AAJTS) Development Program. The 10 new Christie Matrix StIM™ WQ 1-chip DLP® solid state, LED-based projectors will power Immersive Display Solution’s semi-portable simulator dome with a field of view of 240 by 90 degrees. Battlespace Simulations Inc., will supply Model Air Combat Environment (MACE) software used for scenario/entity generation, and MetaVR will provide its Virtual Reality Scene Generator™.

(ASI), has awarded Christie the contract to supply a projection system consisting of nine Christie Matrix StIM™ WQ 1-chip DLP® solid state, LED-based projectors, to the U.S. Coast Guard’s HC-144A Ocean Sentry program at the Aviation Training Center (ATC) in Mobile, Alabama. Christie MicroTiles Help Shaw Communications Speak to Customers at Its Canadian Retail Stores

A waterfall array of Christie® MicroTiles® is inviting customers into the retail stores of Canadian media giant Shaw Communications, where the digital display technology educates customers about the Shaw universe that includes cable television, Internet and phone service.

Since the first 4-units high by 6-units wide array was installed in May at the Sunridge Mall store in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the unique waterfall displays are now up and operating in three more Shaw retail locations in Alberta and British Columbia, with more installations planned in the future.

“We wanted to make the stores exciting enough so the customer would look at the displays and see a reason to walk into the store,” said James Ferguson, national director, Retail, Shaw Communications. “Christie MicroTiles were the answer.”

Combining proven DLP® technology with the long life and reliability of LED, Christie MicroTiles are designed for maximum image quality in demanding indoor, high-ambient light environments. At just 16 inches wide by 12 tall and less than a foot deep, they are ideal for a wide range of applications, including architectural elements, out-of-home advertising, command and control video walls, and event production.

An Easy Decision
According to Ferguson, the decision to use Christie MicroTiles was easy because Shaw – parent company of Global Television – wanted a technology that would give it a “leg up” on other stores and Applied Electronics had already installed a 4-high by 10-wide MicroTiles array in Global Television’s Toronto studio for its morning news show. Familiar with the Toronto installation, Julie Shaw, vice president, facilities, design and management at Shaw Communications, suggested MicroTiles as an option.

“Julie set the tone by raving about what an ‘awesome product’ the MicroTiles were,” said Stephen Monteith, AV design and sales representative at Applied Electronics. “After that, it was an easy decision for the visionaries at Shaw. They immediately realized how the MicroTiles could be used in unique ways within the stores to capture the audiences’ attention.”

Falling for a Unique Waterfall Effect
Having decided on Christie MicroTiles, Ferguson and his team needed to decide where to put them and what content to show while creating a distinctive visual experience that would take advantage of Christie’s technology.

Rather than have all 24 MicroTiles depicting one piece of content simultaneously, Ferguson opted for a waterfall effect with the tiles slightly staggered with gaps along the X Y and Z access in a special bracket designed by RP Visuals. Content including media, innovative new products and services, in market offers and community initiatives are shown as individual thumbnails on the MicroTiles, allowing each piece of content to cascade across the whole screen, before pulsing back into one thumbnail. Hanging from the ceiling in each store, the waterfall configurations catch the attention of those who enter the store – and those passing by.

“We wanted to give our video people a cool ‘sandbox’ to play in that provided content versatility and didn’t limit their imagination,” said Ferguson. “And Christie MicroTiles did just that with the content provided by Breakhouse. Our customers love it and their eyes are drawn to it because it is so different from what they are used to seeing. There is an old adage in retail that customers don’t look up – but in this case they do because the MicroTiles display is different, flashy, and it has content that draws their eye to it.”

Christie To Debut Innovative DualView Simulator Concept At I/ITSEC 2012

Christie®, a leader in simulation projection display and visualization solutions, is poised to introduce one of the industry’s most innovative concepts, the Christie DualView simulator display at I/ITSEC 2012, December 3–6, 2012. The innovative DualView simulator can separately compute and render the same scene from two unique points of view (POV) with excellent image quality, allowing two operators to respond to their own, separately warped, full-screen image simultaneously. This achieves essentially zero geometric distortion rather than a compromise single DEP ( Design Eye Point) located half way between operators.

It accomplishes this by computing completely separate ideal DEP’s for each independent operator working adjacent in the same cockpit, and separating those pilot/copilot views by time, toggling both eyes alternately – very similar to how alternate eye stereo glasses work. As a result, the system offers collaborative training that is closer to real-life scenarios where fast action developments require rapid decisions. It is ideal for applications that involve two operators or pilots such as two-person tandem jets or helicopters, as well as ground vehicles with driver and a gunner behind him, or any other training scenario where completely separate views and telemetry/HUD augmented-reality feedback is useful with zero geometric distortion. DualView computes eight separate images, for a total of 18.4 MegaPixels, seamlessly blended such that pilot sees four combined images and copilot his own separate four combined images.

Christie partnered with RealTime Immersive (RTI), a simulation and serious games company established to support CryENGINE® licensees in the simulation and serious games market. RTI played a key role in the display at I/ITSEC by providing photorealistic quality undersea demo content.

According to Veselic, the Christie DualView represents a new opportunity in the simulation markets such as government, civilian, and gaming, where cost constraints can force customers to compromise on quality and system capabilities. It creates a better sense of teamwork and cooperation than systems in which operators occupy entirely separate simulators. DualView is also much better than splitting screen real estate into two half-resolution images, as is common in gaming, because now each viewer can see their own full resolution images on the entire screen – no compromise in Field of View or image quality. DualView’s ellipsoidal screen is a highly mobile, deployable, and cost-effective solution. It is an extremely promising technology with an immense range of applications, from multi-user simulators for training across many industries, to multiplayer gaming.
