Christie Display Technology Used at the Opening of Lusofonia Games 2014

The stunning visuals by award-winning projection designer and his team, BARTKRESA Design Inc., were displayed using Christie®’s compact, purpose-built projectors. This visual experience enthralled thousands of spectators who have gathered in Goa, India for the 3rd edition of the Lusofonia Games. The sporting event, which takes place January 18-29, features 40 Christie Roadster S+20K, Roadster S+22K-J and Roadster HD20K-J 3-chip DLP® projectors at the opening ceremony that includes an impressive projection mapping show.

Audio Design, Christie’s local partner that is fully responsible for the Games’ visual display, collaborated with world-renowned projection designer BARTKRESA Design Inc. to create the stunning and engaging visual spectacle. BARTKRESA is known for delivering one-of-a-kind projection designs by combining industry-leading projectors and timeless artistry through brilliantly executed immersive projections.

The Christie projectors are installed strategically in six towers around the 22,000-seat Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium – the venue of the opening ceremony – and they have been accurately calibrated for maximum projection coverage and seamless edge blending onto the field during the event.

“We’re thrilled that Christie’s high performance projectors are being deployed at the Lusofonia Games for the first time and we’re confident that the entire show will be a spectacular visual feast,” said Navneet Wadhwa, managing director, Audio Design.

Vijay Sabhlok, director, Video Design, added, “The opening ceremony of the Games will be the biggest projection event that has ever been staged in India. This beats our very own best of 30 projectors used previously for the Umaid Bhawan projection mapping project.”

“The Lusofonia Games is a prestigious international sporting event and we’re delighted to be in the beautiful city of Goa to create stunning visuals that immerse and transport viewers on a journey of sporting excellence,” said Kresa. “We’ve worked very closely with the show director of the opening ceremony to bring out the energy and vibrancy of this event to the whole world.”

The performances at the opening ceremony encompass the spirit of “unity and pride”, which are the key elements of the Games, as well as the rich history and heritage of Indian and Goan culture that are celebrated through the theme “Panchatattva” – the five elements of nature comprising fire, water, earth, air and ether.

Keshav Chandra, CEO, Lusofonia Games, said, “This spectacular launch is a fitting precursor to this international sporting event. Goa has geared up to host athletes from the participating countries and we are very happy and proud to host this exciting event.”

Widely referred to as the Portuguese version of the British Commonwealth Games, the Lusofonia Games is organized by the Association of the Portuguese Speaking Olympic Committee (ACOLOP). It involves athletes and officials from 12 Portuguese-speaking countries, formerly ruled by Portugal. Among the countries taking part in the 12-day tournament are Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, East Timor, Guinea-Bissau, Macau (China), Mozambique, Portugal and Sao Tome and Principe. Equatorial Guinea, India and Sri Lanka are associate members of the Games.

“It’s a great honor for us to be part of this major sports event for the first time and we’re delighted and proud that our high performance projectors are used in the grand opening ceremony to kick-start the Games in a big way,” said Lin Yu, vice president, Christie Asia Pacific. “It’s also wonderful to see thousands of spectators wowed by the awesome visuals that have definitely made the event even more memorable.”

Christie is “Front and Center” With Launch of New Series of Front Access Christie Entero HB Rear Projection Cubes

It’s “eyes front” for Christie®, a world leader in control room display technology, with the introduction of a new front access video wall cube product that enables seamless high performance rear projection video wall displays with minimal installation and maintenance space required. All the benefits of Christie’s latest and brightest Entero™ HB DLP® LED-based technology display are available in a platform that allows video wall cubes to be positioned directly against a rear wall, removing the need for maintenance space behind. The first front access cube model, the Christie Entero HB 70-inch HD, will be joined by other front access models including 50 inch and 70 inch SXGA+, and 72 inch WUXGA.

Christie Entero HB Front Access Cube

Christie’s front access system design addresses space limitations with the ability to put the cubes up against a wall without compromising performance, image quality or reliability. Customers can gain valuable space in their control room design by placing cubes directly against a wall, while maintaining the narrowest screen gaps in the industry and utilizing a smart air flow design for superior system ventilation.

The front access system is designed to take advantage of the Christie Entero HB systems’ User and Web Interface to enable remote control release of the screen for front service access as well as remotely performing fine geometry alignment by the integrated 6-axis geometry alignment system. Screen and geometry control are provided via the remote control, computer or tablet. The screen is on a slide mechanism and opens up with reliable and consistent positioning, via remote activation of solenoids, providing full access to the internal electronics from the front of the cube array system, allowing for exceptionally quick servicing and minimal downtime during maintenance operations.

“With space at a premium at many installation sites, front access cubes make it possible to install them right up against a wall or a structure,” said Jim Gavloski, director, Product Management, Control Room and Video Wall Display Solutions. “It’s a significant design element that will greatly expand the installation flexibility and ease of maintenance within our entire Christie Entero HB line.”

Christie’s front access system with motorized six-axis adjuster provides precise alterations for perfect image quality. To access system internals, the installer simply engages the intuitive user interface on the chosen device -PC, tablet or even smart phone, and the system pops the screen away from the cube body, allowing the installer to easily move the screen out of the way for full front access. The internal electronics module has been adjusted to make the LED display viewable from the front. Since no space is required behind the display wall cube, it makes them ideal for control room environments where space is restricted.

The new and improved Christie Entero HB video wall projection solution is based on the company’s proven LED platform – introduced first by Christie – which today is found in thousands of installations worldwide. Launched in November 2012, the Christie Entero HB helped to strengthen the company’s dominance in the control room arena, with display cube solutions that are “bigger and better” and set new standards in power efficiency, visual performance and image brightness, with up to 1,350 lumens capability. They feature proprietary third generation ArraySync™ automatic color and brightness management technology that monitors and adjusts color and brightness levels across the video wall in real time for perfectly uniform display wall visuals for the lifetime of the installation. Designed for 24/7 environments, Entero HB products offer the best price, performance and efficiency on the market with a superior and intuitive modular design, easy upgradability, and flexible operation for the demands of power and utilities, government, security and surveillance, and public and emergency services.

“With more than 30 years of industry expertise, Christie is ready to provide its customers with the perfect control room solution, and now, with the new front access system, the fastest way to access the interior electronics of our popular Christie Entero line of display cubes,” said Gavloski.

Control Room Solutions for Mission-Critical Monitoring
Today’s control rooms go beyond traditional displaying and monitoring, and Christie’s collaborative visual solutions are removing boundaries and enabling expansive collaboration for the world’s most mission-critical operations. By integrating stunning zero-maintenance displays with the power of the network, Christie is completely redefining the control room space and setting the stage for an increasingly distributed control room environment. Across every sector in business, commerce and government, Christie is raising the bar to exceed today’s control room operational requirements.

Christie Lights Up TCL Chinese Theatres as Official 4K Digital Projection Partner, with Christie Duo Anchoring State-of-the-Art 932-Seat Auditorium

Christie®, a world leader in advanced cinema technologies and visual displays, announced that it is the official 4K digital projection partner of TCL Chinese Theatres for the renovated TCL Chinese Theatres in Hollywood, with the acclaimed 4K Christie® Duo™ two-projector system anchoring that theater’s 932-seat auditorium and lighting up its massive screen.

Christie digital cinema projectors have also been installed exclusively at the adjacent TCL Chinese 6 Theatres, making the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame a “walk with Christie.” TCL Chinese Theatres reopened to the public on September 15, following extensive renovations, with the world premiere of the remastered “The Wizard of Oz: An IMAX 3D Experience.”

Front of TCL Chinese Theatres

The installation of the 4K Christie Duo solution at TCL Chinese Theatres is among the highlights of the extensive, multi-million dollar renovation that have helped the famous landmark make the move to digital. The reopened theater features the brightest 2D and 3D 4K-resolution images in the industry, with the auditorium playing host to a wide range of high-profile events, from world premieres and gala performances, to some of the entertainment industry’s most glamorous celebrations and awards shows.

“The TCL Chinese Theatres is an iconic institution that has played a significant role in the legends and traditions of the entertainment history worldwide,” noted Alwyn Hight Kushner, president and chief operating officer for TCL Chinese Theatres. “The TCL Chinese Theatres’ multi-million renovation efforts included a respectful acknowledgement of the theater’s history, while bringing it into the digital age, thanks to our digital cinema partners, which include Christie. We are also pleased that Christie projection systems are lighting up our TCL Chinese 6 Theatres’ screens nearby. For us, Christie was the clear solution for our non-IMAX 2D and 3D showings.”

Craig Sholder, vice president of Entertainment Solutions at Christie, noted that “The TCL Chinese Theatres is part of American history, as is Christie, with our record of more than 80 years service to the cinema exhibition industry. As the official 4K digital projection partner, Christie is proud to ensure that all the content shown at the TCL Chinese Theatres is always thrilling, magical and memorable – the way movies are meant to be.”

The Christie Duo two-projection system, selected and installed through Christie integration partner Southern California Cinetech Services, offers twice the brightness of conventional systems for enhanced 3D, 4K resolution and High Frame Rate (HFR) screenings, enabling TCL Chinese Theatres to deliver an enhanced movie-viewing experience. It features an innovative design that perfectly aligns every pixel on the giant screen for optimal 2D and 3D screenings.

Jim Dukes, Christie senior product manager, noted that the massive screen at TCL Chinese Theatres is an excellent canvas for demonstrating the enormous power and brightness of the total solution that Christie Duo and two Christie Solaria® CP4230 projectors deliver.

“Large screens such as the one at the TCL Chinese Theatres present a challenge to most dual projection systems when it comes to the convergence of the image, which must be perfectly aligned to ensure the sharpest results possible. The Christie Duo’s configuration options solve that challenge by making image convergence quick, easy and consistent,” said Dukes. “Since its introduction, the Christie Duo has been highly acclaimed for addressing the biggest issue faced by exhibitors when screening 3D movies: that is, the delivery of ample brightness to the screen to make the experience memorable.”

Dukes also observed that the dominance of the Christie brand in theaters is also reflected in the exclusive use of Christie digital projection systems in the TCL Chinese 6 Theatres nearby.

“Christie digital projectors are used by leading exhibitors around the globe and are found in more digital cinema installations than any other brand,” he said.

Christie MicroTiles Helps Raven Industries Communicate Its Value Proposition

Raven Industries selected Christie® MicroTiles® for part of its extensive corporate lobby redesign, installing a three-unit tall by seven-unit wide array that shows videos of the company’s history and its three operating divisions. Located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and founded in 1956, Raven Industries designs and manufactures high value technical products including precision agriculture, high performance plastic films and sheeting, and aerospace and surveillance technology.

Christie MicroTiles at Raven Industries

Andrew Simmons, project coordinator, Raven Industries, discovered Christie MicroTiles at a Chicago trade show and thought they would be an “innovative concept” to include in Raven Industries’ remodeling plans for its headquarters. Simmons recommended the Christie MicroTiles for the refashioned main entrance.

For the lobby, the architect created a 45-degree angle, white-faced wall, placing the Christie MicroTiles inside and raised above ground level. The front desk operator sits to the left of the wall and with the remodel now complete, the new employee entrance off to one side provides a second direct view of the MicroTiles.

“The Executive Team was looking for a design that incorporated HD content without the traditional limits of a television mounted to a wall. We didn’t want to implement something that every company had done; we wanted something new and innovative that positions us as a tech company. It was important that we select a robust design that ensures longevity,” said Simmons. “After further research of the MicroTiles, we invited Christie onsite to perform a full demonstration of the product, and from there it went to design and final approval.”

Christie MicroTiles Garner Positive Feedback While Showcasing Raven Industries’ Know-How
“We show a variety of content on the MicroTiles, basically about our product capabilities and our company’s purpose,” added Kristin Tilus, communications manager, Raven Industries. “Our purpose is to solve great challenges – whether it is in the area of feeding the world, protecting the environment or saving lives. One video is a compilation showing different areas of our three divisions: Our Aerostar Division, our Engineered Films Division, and our Applied Technology Division. For example, viewers see precision agriculture equipment being installed inside tractors and other products that are used in the industry.”

Tilus noted that the display was showing an image of the Board of Directors when they walked into the building. Upon seeing the crisp, glare-free image, they first thought it was a print photograph rather than a video. With a much wider color palette than conventional LCD and plasma displays, Christie MicroTiles show pure, saturated, accurate colors, making them ideal for corporate lobbies. The modular display technology can be configured into nearly any shape and size to create an eye-catching digital canvas.

“Our main entrance is composed of glass and has significant ambient light both from outside and overhead. A standard television would appear washed out, so it was great to find a vibrant, durable solution that solved this challenge. We were pleased to work with Christie on the design and installation of our HD video wall and were impressed with the professionalism and quality service received,” said Simmons. “With the support of AVI Systems, we were able to execute and complete the project successfully to meet our timeline. The Christie JumpStart software is user-friendly, and allows us to drive different elements to the MicroTiles.”

Packaged with a media server, Christie JumpStart is a content management solution that allows you to display multiple video files, graphics, text and Microsoft Windows applications on a five to 15 megapixel digital display.

Christie MicroTiles Showing the Dupont Story at Johnston Dupont Innovation Center

Christie® and AVI Systems have created a striking 10-unit wide by 5-units tall Christie® MicroTiles® digital display wall in Johnston, Iowa that impressed those attending the Center’s grand opening June 25. Also known as the Collaboratory, and the twelfth center DuPont has opened globally, the Johnston DuPont Innovation Center provides a unique environment for collaboration among more than 10,000 DuPont scientists and engineers with customers, government officials, academics, and business partners around the world.

DuPont Collaboratory - MicroTiles Display Wall

The 3,500 square foot space and adjoining collaboration room showcases the latest company technology, applications and products that are designed to meet the world’s biggest challenges, including food security, energy and protection.

AVI Systems and DuPont Choose Christie MicroTiles
The initial idea was to install flat panels but Les Hofland, System Sales Specialist, CTS, AVI Systems, had Christie MicroTiles in mind from the start.

“We showed the 5-high by 1-wide Christie MicroTiles tower we have to some people at the Center about two months before they brought us into this meeting,” said Hofland. “I brought in the DuPont people and one thing they really liked was that on each MicroTiles unit they could pull out the light engine and put a new one in within 15 minutes. They didn’t have to worry about replacing the entire wall.”

Christie and AVI Systems Meet Strict Deadline; Christie MicroTiles Overcome Substantial Ambient Light
Working with McCullough Creative, who produced the corporate videos and other content shown on the Christie MicroTiles, the installation team had a June 22 cutoff date for the opening three days later.

“The room was still under construction so we couldn’t get in there until the last week in May. They wanted the wall up and running a couple weeks ahead of the deadline to give the software designers some play time with the equipment,” said Hofland. “We met the deadline and I was very happy with the information we received for designing the wall. Everything showed up just days after we put the order in; things happened quickly and we were surprised about the fast delivery time. Christie really stepped up to the plate.”

Since they are located against one wall in a large, south facing room with glass windows running almost ceiling to floor, bright sunlight often bathes the Christie MicroTiles.

“Bright, ambient light is a factor but it doesn’t impact the MicroTiles at all,” said Hofland. “The display always looks nice and full without any problems seeing it. Everyone loves the MicroTiles and think it’s the best thing they have ever seen.”

With a much wider color palette than conventional LCD displays, Christie MicroTiles show pure, saturated, accurate colors. The modular display technology can be configured into nearly any shape and size to create a gorgeous digital canvas.
