QSC Introduces Revolutionary Power Amplification Technology Platform

The QSC CXD Series Family of Amplifiers for Installed Sound

Costa Mesa, CA (June 2013) — QSC Audio Products, LLC is pleased to announce its revolutionary power amplification technology platform with the introduction of two new amplifier families, the CXD Series for Installed Sound Applications and the PLD Series for Portable / Live Sound Reinforcement Applications. Featuring advanced signal processing combined with a unique power distribution configuration, the PLD and CXD Multi-Channel Processing Power Amplifiers completely redefine the rack-mount power amplifier category.

“Our new CXD and PLD amps represent a major advancement in amplifier technology and innovation,” says Dale Sandberg, QSC Senior Product Manager, Amplifiers. “Not only are they amazing class-D amplifiers with on-board processing, but they change the fundamental amp paradigm with a unique channel combining methodology for much greater flexibility. The benefit of all this is an outstanding new platform that meets the needs of our customers in a whole new way.”

“There’s been a misconception that QSC was moving away from power amplifier products and instead focusing our attention on loudspeakers and DSP,” states Gerry Tschetter, VP Marketing. “While we’ve seen tremendous success in those product categories in recent years, the fact remains that QSC still builds the best power amplifiers in the market. Our new CXD and PLD amplifiers are a reflection of our use of cutting edge technologies, our deep understanding of DSP and loudspeaker engineering and our legacy of over 40 years of rock solid amplifier design.”

Housed in a 2U rack-mount configuration, CXD and PLD Series amplifiers feature new QSC proprietary class-D power devices, which enable multi-channel, high performance power. The innovative Flexible Amplifier Summing Technology™ (FAST), provides better power allocation by actively distributing the total amplifier power across one, two, three or all four outputs enabling amp channels to be combined for maximum current or voltage output with the largest models capable of up to 5,000 watts.

With independent DSP processing available for every channel, a preset wizard streamlines the setup process simplifying amplifier configuration and deployment. Advanced DSP includes cross-over filters, parametric EQ, alignment delay and other dynamics processing and when paired with QSC loudspeakers, Intrinsic Correction™ processing techniques may be employed to ensure optimum sonic performance. The integration of DSP with amplification means that the onboard processor is aware of what the amplifier is doing. This enables the dynamics processing and protection circuitry to be far more accurate and effective. USB interfaces on the rear panels allow firmware updates as well as the ability to upload loudspeaker tunings and configurations and transfer data between amplifiers. Multiple DSP-controlled power saving modes combined with the Class-D design ensure high efficiency, low weight, and economical cost of ownership.

Designed specifically for the needs of integrators, CXD Series amplifiers provide efficient, robust and extraordinarily high fidelity power capable of driving multiple amplifier channels and loudspeaker configurations while simultaneously deploying sophisticated digital processing – all with optimal energy and efficiency. The CXD lineup includes the CXD4.2 (400W @ 8 ohms, continuous), the CXD4.3 (625W @ 8 ohms, continuous) and the CXD4.5 (1150W @ 8 ohms, continuous) with the CXD 4.3 and CXD4.5 able to direct drive 70V and 100V systems. The rear panel features four (4) balanced Euroblock input connectors and four (4) Euroblock touch-proof loudspeaker connectors enabling integrators to terminate wiring before connecting to the amplifier. GPIO located on the rear panel offers additional functionality including a heartbeat output for Life-Safety supervision. In addition to their outstanding efficiency, the CXD amplifiers’ power saving modes further ensure that energy costs will be kept to a minimum over the life of the installation.

PLD Series Amplifiers, designed specifically for portable sound applications, provide efficient, robust and extraordinarily high-fidelity power to drive multiple channels of loudspeakers while simultaneously deploying sophisticated digital processing, all with minimal operational complexity. The PLD line consists of the PLD4.2 (400W @ 8 ohms, continuous), the PLD4.3 (625W @ 8 ohms, continuous) and the PLD4.5 (1150W @ 8 ohms, continuous). The rear panel features four (4) balanced XLR input connectors with loop-thru and six (6) Speakon® NL4 loudspeaker connectors for easy setup. The on-board processing is managed via front panel controls with 20 factory settings included for the most common applications. For more customized settings, the included Configuration Wizard helps streamline system setup and configuration. PLD amplifiers combine improved system performance with a wide and flexible range of options for future systems growth.

CXD and PLD Series Amplifiers will be available in July 2013.

South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa in Las Vegas Builds to the Future with Complete QSC Audio System

South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa, Las Vegas

Las Vegas, NV (June 2013) — South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa, the first mega-resort to be built south of McCarran Airport on the Las Vegas Strip, has installed a QSC Audio Q-Sys(TM) Core 500i network processor, CX Series amplifiers and AcousticDesign(TM) ceiling speakers to handle paging and P.A. in its recently expanded Arena and Equestrian Center. The resort, which purchased the QSC Audio components through Solotech Las Vegas, intends to extend the Q-Sys network into a $30 million bowling arena planned for completion at the beginning of 2016.

The property opened at the very end of 2006, and added QSC Audio BASIS networked audio products to the resort, reports Jason Lein, South Point’s production manager. “When we expanded the arena we took the opportunity to upgrade the processing in there from BASIS to the new Q-Sys 500i. The system has so much processing power that all of the bowling arena expansion will be run off that same core as well. The bowling center will be built for broadcast TV and we’ll have two new equestrian arenas as well—we’ll run it all off that same system.”

South Point recently expanded a concourse and added meeting rooms to its Arena and Equestrian Center, which features a 4,600-seat show arena, an indoor practice arena and a covered outside arena. The center also hosts motor sports and other events in addition to equestrian shows.

Using the new Core 500i, adds Lein, “We created four different concourse zones. We’ve got a bar, tunnels, a practice arena and 1200 air-conditioned horse stalls; the new meeting rooms located on the concourse. We run approximately 144 different page configuration options, using both wired and wireless mics for paging. Depending on what horse events are in here we have to set up several different page zoning scenarios on the fly.”

Lein and his crew installed a dozen AcousticDesign AD-CI52ST two-way, high fidelity in-ceiling speakers in the concourse and meeting rooms, as well as TSC-3 networked touch screen controllers in the meeting rooms. South Point added QSC CX602 amplifiers to power the new ceiling speakers. “Everything is QSC amp-based, even in the main arena,” reports Lein. “We’ve got some PowerLight 4.0 amps from the original install that we never need to replace, and we’re using the PL380s as well.”

Production staff members typically employ wireless control of the Q-Sys set-up, says Lein. “Whichever tech crew is assigned to an event will grab an iPad or the computer controller and set the paging configurations up prior to that show, based on that event’s needs. Switching from the BASIS to the Q-Sys system made it very easy for us to program these iPad-controllable UCIs [user control interfaces] to fit those needs, then reset the whole system before the next event, and then set up the next event, all off these UCIs. The Q-Sys system has been a big benefit for that alone.”

At the end of April, South Point, Las Vegas Events and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority jointly announced a 12-year agreement with the United States Bowling Congress to host seven championship events in Las Vegas beginning in 2016. South Point, which already features a 64-lane Bowling Center, home to the Professional Bowlers Association’s World Series of Bowling, will build a two-story complex housing a 60-lane bowling facility outfitted with the latest technology on the top floor and two additional horse arenas—sound isolated from the floor above—on the lower level.

“When we get into the new expansion, the two new arena bowls, we’ll install the new QSC AcousticDesign Series speakers,” says Lein. “We’ll be installing over 100 of the 5 ¼-inch AD-CI52ST ceiling speakers throughout the bowling center hallways. We’ll also be installing AcousticDesign series speakers for the bowling lanes, with QSC subs placed throughout the bowling center. We’ll probably be adding more Q-Sys I/O Frames later this year.”

The upgrade to the Q-Sys system’s advanced Layer 3 networking technology has made it easier for Lein to program the new set-up. “Our new design with Q Sys, where the schematics are all-in- one is phenomenal. It definitely makes it easier on the programmer,” he observes. Lein also praises the remote access offered by the system. “We’ve got one or two people, myself included, who handle the programming. When we’re at home and we get service calls, it’s so great to be able to have the remote Signal Probe and be able to analyze what’s going on with the system from anywhere.”

QSC AcousticDesign Loudspeakers Reinforce the Ambience at Atlantic City’s New $2.4 Billion Revel Casino-Resort

Revel CasinoNearly 570 QSC Loudspeakers Deliver Consistent Coverage and High-Quality Audio to Gaming Floor

Atlantic City, NJ (Oct 18, 2012) — Montreal-based Scéno Plus, renowned for its theatre design work in Las Vegas, Canada, and around the world, recently completed a major, multi-venue project at Revel, the new $2.4 billion casino-resort at the north end of Atlantic City’s famed boardwalk. Scéno Plus was the lead designer for all of the entertainment spaces at the Revel, including the Revelry casino floor, where the company designed, specified and optimized nearly 570 QSC Audio Products AcousticDesign Series ceiling- and surface-mount loudspeakers.

Scéno Plus was responsible for the design of two large, multipurpose, transformable venues, several bars and various interconnecting spaces at Revel. The resort, which fronts onto the beach, covers 20 acres and, at 47 stories, is the tallest building in Atlantic City.
In a break with traditional casino design, Revelry’s 130,000-sq.-ft. gaming floor includes windows offering panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. As daylight fades, audiovisual, lighting and interior design elements dynamically change the ambiance of what are referred to as “neighborhoods” on the floor as the night’s entertainment begins. “The client wanted to have a high-end theatrical experience on the gaming floor,” explains Simon Léonard, AV Designer, Scéno Plus.
The constant-voltage distributed audio system on the Revelry casino floor includes 274 QSC AcousticDesign AD-CI52ST ceiling speakers, which employ 5.25-inch LF transducer, a 1-inch titanium dome tweeter and a ported enclosure for greater low frequency extension; 170 QSC AcousticDesign AD-S52T two-way surface mount speakers, also incorporating a 5.25-inch woofer and 1-inch neodymium tweeter; and 125 QSC AcousticDesign AD-C81Tw ceiling-mount 8-inch subwoofers, providing additional low-frequency extension.
“The AcousticDesign line was a great choice, because the client really wanted to have fullness and richness of both the high-end and the low-end,” says Léonard. “So we needed a product that could suit that large, broad spectrum, and would also be really comfortable to listen to.”
Despite the significant differences in ceiling height and of finish materials between one neighborhood and the next, the QSC AcousticDesign products were remarkably easy to dial in, according to Léonard. “The voicing of the whole line is very nice. You go from a low ceiling area to an open part of the casino, where AVI/SPL & CALVI worked hard to maintain a certain level of consistency in the trim heights, but the voicing is really similar. You could also get more of the same response between the ceiling and the surface mount versions, which is very nice. We were really astonished at how we could easily, without eq’ing for hours, get the same response everywhere.” He continues, “We were surprised to hear how the AD speakers sounded right out of the box, off-, as well as, on-axis. You can really get something that is consistent throughout the whole coverage area.”
The speaker system on the casino floor also needed to be of high quality, capable of acting as an extension of the sound systems in several of the featured spaces. These include The Social, a two-story, high-energy show-bar in the center of the gaming floor that hosts a variety of events, including musical guests; the Digipit, an area with a raised runway, two raised stages and space for acrobatic and aerial performances; and the Immersive Dome, an overhead, 360-degree digital video projection installation. “There are a couple of features like that on the Revelry floor that the system can take its source from,” says Léonard. “So we put a lot of attention into how we were going to zone the system, just to make sure that we would be able to maintain something that makes sense with the architecture.”
The changing environments and various show elements are preprogrammed and played out through show control automation. “So the floor manager at any time can override the timeline and select something at the catwalk, or later if there’s something happening in the bar and they want to extend the experience onto the floor, they are always able to do so. That’s why we had to provide a sound reinforcement system that would reflect or extend the quality of a live event. It’s more or less an extension of a concert system,” he elaborates.
Scéno Plus collaborated on the Revel project with Claude Ricard and Marc St-Jacques of SF Marketing, the QSC distributor for Canada. “We had the opportunity to do a mock up in their facility, so we could really compare what EASE Address was saying to compare it with the real life installation, or as close as we could get it. Those guys were really a big help,” says Léonard. We were really happy about how it turned out.” More importantly, he comments, “The client is really pleased with the results.”

Jackson, MO Strikes up the Band with the QSC Weatherized WideLine™-8 Line Array Loudspeaker System

Jackson, MO (July 23, 2012) – Throughout the summer months in Jackson, MO, the Jackson Municipal Band plays free weekly concerts every Thursday evening and performs throughout the year at important community events such as Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Homecoming. Ensuring that the band sounds better than ever for its ninety-second season, locally based systems integrator Unity Pro Audio and Video upgraded the Jackson Municipal Bandshell in City Park with the installation of a six-cabinet QSC Audio WL3082-wx Weatherized WideLine-8 line array loudspeaker system powered by three PowerLight™ 3 Series amplifiers.

The Jackson Municipal Band has been performing annually since 1976 at the outdoor bandshell, which is located in a grassy amphitheater bordered by trees, but until now has not had a purpose-designed PA system. “They were using point and shoot speakers. The community approached us to be a little bit more creative and push the envelope of technology a little; they knew that is our forte,” says Unity Pro AV’s Matt Schwartz, who mapped the location into EASE Focus and designed a system that he then presented to the board of directors of the community band.
Schwartz determined that the best solution for the bandshell, which is approximately 50 feet wide, was a center array with a wide dispersion pattern, and then selected the QSC Weatherized WideLine Line Array Loudspeaker system, citing its ample coverage and affordable price point. Two QSC PL380 amplifiers (2 x 2500 W @ 4 ohms) and a single PL340 (2 x 1250 W @ 4 ohms) power the array, which is optimized using an SC28 System Controller. Unity Pro AV additionally supplied eight QSC K10 two-way, 10-inch active speakers for use as floor monitors.

“As there are surrounding houses and residential areas near the bandshell, putting a line array on either side of the stage would have given way, way too much horizontal coverage,” says Schwartz. “The QSC WideLine-8 was the ideal solution as a center array because of its 140 degree dispersion. It allows us to keep the coverage off the local residences as much as possible and stay within the amphitheater.” Schwartz also reports that there is only a 3 dB difference in level between the front row and 300 yards away.
He continues, “From a budgetary standpoint, when I compared other weatherized speakers everything pointed back to QSC. Plus, I was able to get by with less amplification because we were using the PowerLight amps. I’d heard the WideLine System before and I knew it packed a heck of a punch. It’s a great system.”

Hanging a center array weighing more than 500 pounds required the fabrication of additional structural metalwork for the bandshell. Schwartz designed the new metalwork in consultation with a Professional Engineer (PE) to ensure proper load and wind resistance. “They stack bands there — they put one band on the ground and another on the stage — so we ran the structure out 12 feet. It’s very sturdy. We’ve had a lot of compliments about how well that structure ended up looking,” he says.
The Jackson Municipal Band, established by the Jackson Chamber of Commerce in 1920, performed at the gazebo on the Cape Girardeau courthouse grounds from 1932 until the dedication of the City Park Bandshell in 1976. The band’s current summer season kicked off on June 7 together with an opening act, the Southeast Missouri State Steel Drum Band.
