Golf Channel’s News Show Golf Central Stays in Swing with Lectrosonics

Stef_Butler_Golf_LectrosonicsMedium

Los Angeles, CA (January 28, 2015) — As part of the Comcast Programming Group, Golf Channel is the gold standard when it comes to the sport of golf. Shot on location throughout California, including Beverly Hills, Pebble Beach, and San Diego, Golf Channel operates in partnership with the PGA Tour and showcases the biggest and the best of everything related to the sport for the television news show, Golf Central. Capturing the magic of this sport must be done efficiently and without distracting the competitors. That’s precisely why, when it comes to location sound recording, Digital Hybrid Wireless® technology from Lectrosonics plays a central role in the show’s production.

Los Angeles-based Stef Butler serves as the show’s camera operator and high-definition engineer and selects and specifies equipment. With a background that encompasses working on the production teams for the TV shows Wheel of Fortune and The Biography Series on A&E, as well as contract work for NASA/JPL, Butler knows what it takes to capture the activity without holding up production. And he relies on an arsenal of Lectrosonics UM400 beltpack transmitters, SRb5P slot mount ENG receivers, and IFBR1a beltpack IFB receivers.

“For my work with the Golf Channel, I’m using eight UM400s, four SRb5P receivers, plus four of the IFBR1a beltpack IFB receivers,” says Butler. “Much of my work for the Golf Channel show, Golf Central is news related, so it’s fast paced. The Lectrosonics SRb receivers are an essential part of my kit in such an environment. It really makes a tremendous difference having the receivers mounted in the slot inside the camera’s body, as it increases both ease of use and efficiency.”
A matter of vital concern to someone in Butler’s field is the equipment’s ease of use. “The very nature of news gathering is demanding,” says Butler. “Having a wireless system that is intuitive is a tremendous help. I constantly encounter situations where the RF frequencies need to be changed in order to avoid RF interference and optimize sound quality. Lectrosonics equipment makes it very easy to scan for open frequencies and then lock them down with a single button press.”

Sound quality is, of course, central to Butler’s work and, here too, he was very complimentary of Lectrosonics’ Digital Hybrid Wireless® technology. “Lectrosonics’ Digital Hybrid Wireless technology sounds terrific and makes for a strong signal with very low power consumption,” adds Butler. “I experience great range with this equipment and the sound never exhibits any of the sonic artifacts that are common with wireless systems using a compandor.”

Knowing your equipment is reliable is one thing. Equally important is the knowledge that if something happens, the equipment manufacturer offers knowledgeable and responsive support services. In this regard, Butler offered the following, “Lectrosonics is very supportive of its customers. They understand the nature of our business and recognize that, when answers are needed, they’re frequently needed ASAP.”

Before turning his focus to preparation for an upcoming shoot, Butler offered these closing thoughts, “I honestly can’t think of a better wireless system than Lectrosonics. My Lectrosonics gear delivers excellent sound quality, bulletproof reliability, along with great tech support and customer service. I wouldn’t trust my business to any other manufacturer.”

For additional information on the services of Stef Butler, contact him at steffinbutler@gmail.com.

Margarita Mix of Santa Monica Adds Fourth Fairlight EVO System

Sound Mixer Paul Hurtubise at the Fairlight EVO Audio Production System, Margarita Mix, Santa Monica, CA.

Sound Mixer Paul Hurtubise at the Fairlight EVO Audio Production System, Margarita Mix, Santa Monica, CA.

SANTA MONICA, CA (Nov 3, 2014) — Margarita Mix of Santa Monica, a FotoKem company specializing in audio post services for commercials and advertising media, has installed a fourth Fairlight EVO integrated audio production system for their award-winning team of sound designers, mixers and composers. With the upgrade, the facility’s accomplished sound mixers Paul Hurtubise, Jimmy Hite, Nathan Dubin and Jeff Levy are now working on identical audio post platforms in their HD mixing suites.

“The facility was already working extensively on Fairlight, and after careful evaluation and testing, I made the transition,” says Hurtubise, who joined Margarita Mix in late 2012 with over 20 years of experience in commercial audio post.

Having used a number of platforms over the course of his career, Hurtubise notes, “I simply think Fairlight sounds better. It’s less fatiguing on the ears, and I seem to hear things more clearly and definitively.

“The EVO workstation is also very ergonomic and easy to operate,” he adds. “I feel like I’m on a system that’s been developed for humans to work on. EVO’s jogger fits my hand, and its keyboard fits my fingers. I’m running sessions more efficiently because I’m not as focused on all the clicking.”

Hurtubise also points out that the graphic displays are less fatiguing. “It’s much easier for me to be on the Fairlight all day. I noticed immediately that I wasn’t as physically tired at the end of the day. The displays are comfortable to work on, too.”

According to the talented mixing team at Margarita Mix, there are plenty of features to like about the system. They like that the picture has a home in the system, versus floating around the screen. “The picture’s right there when I want it—I love the Pyxis,” Hurtubise says of the dual-channel HD video recorder that is integrated into EVO as standard. “I also like the streaming Pyxis video frames along the bottom of the timeline display, and being able to see the picture frames before and after the playhead. This way, I can see how many frames I have until my next edit.”

When the mixers need to face the voiceover booth with a script in front of them rather than face the EVO surface, they’ve created a macro that puts “Record” on different sides of the controller so that it’s ergonomically easier for them. Fairlight’s one-button record function also helps in VO sessions when the talent starts to speak. “We don’t want to interrupt them; if we press our ‘Record’ macro button, the disk recorder immediately stops one take and goes right into another one in the span of a 1/10th of a second,” Hurtubise explains.

Custom fader sets are another admired attribute of the system. “I’ve never been on a system where I can so easily lay out faders to my liking,” says Hurtubise. “Sometimes I’m knee deep into a session and I really wish I had my beeps next to my mic, right next to my music stem, right next to my sound effects stem, next to the dialog stem next to my headphone send—then I can mute and level them very easily. I can create that quickly with Fairlight.”

There are several features on the Fairlight that the Margarita Mix team hasn’t had available on previous DAWs. “For example, I like the way Fairlight solos tracks: I can solo a set of tracks, un-solo them by holding control and pressing one button, and then re-solo that same set by pressing one button,” Hurtubise reports. “I like being able to memorize zooms. Say I have 128 tracks with 70 music stems and 40 sound effects stems. I can zoom to the music tracks and store it in U1; I can go to the sound effects tracks and store that in U2. If I hear something in the music I just press U1, and instantly I’m looking at the music stems. It is super easy.”

All four Fairlight operators at Margarita Mix use similar console control templates for uniformity. Nathan Dubin has been at Margarita Mix for over a decade recording VO, mixing for television, ADR recording for film and commercial mixing for TV and radio that has earned several industry accolades. Working with clients such as Nissan, Activision, Disney, AT&T, Kaiser Permanente, and UPS, Jimmy Hite has over 30 years of experience in sound mixing for the commercial and advertising industries, and has won numerous awards throughout his career. Paul Hurtubise focuses on commercial mixing as well as ADR and commentary recording. His recent credits include spots for Google, eHarmony, Old Navy, Hyundai, and Toyota, among others. Jeff Levy has been part of the team for 20-plus years, also earning multiple awards for mixing and sound design.

QSC Introduces Revolutionary Power Amplification Technology Platform

The QSC CXD Series Family of Amplifiers for Installed Sound

Costa Mesa, CA (June 2013) — QSC Audio Products, LLC is pleased to announce its revolutionary power amplification technology platform with the introduction of two new amplifier families, the CXD Series for Installed Sound Applications and the PLD Series for Portable / Live Sound Reinforcement Applications. Featuring advanced signal processing combined with a unique power distribution configuration, the PLD and CXD Multi-Channel Processing Power Amplifiers completely redefine the rack-mount power amplifier category.

“Our new CXD and PLD amps represent a major advancement in amplifier technology and innovation,” says Dale Sandberg, QSC Senior Product Manager, Amplifiers. “Not only are they amazing class-D amplifiers with on-board processing, but they change the fundamental amp paradigm with a unique channel combining methodology for much greater flexibility. The benefit of all this is an outstanding new platform that meets the needs of our customers in a whole new way.”

“There’s been a misconception that QSC was moving away from power amplifier products and instead focusing our attention on loudspeakers and DSP,” states Gerry Tschetter, VP Marketing. “While we’ve seen tremendous success in those product categories in recent years, the fact remains that QSC still builds the best power amplifiers in the market. Our new CXD and PLD amplifiers are a reflection of our use of cutting edge technologies, our deep understanding of DSP and loudspeaker engineering and our legacy of over 40 years of rock solid amplifier design.”

Housed in a 2U rack-mount configuration, CXD and PLD Series amplifiers feature new QSC proprietary class-D power devices, which enable multi-channel, high performance power. The innovative Flexible Amplifier Summing Technology™ (FAST), provides better power allocation by actively distributing the total amplifier power across one, two, three or all four outputs enabling amp channels to be combined for maximum current or voltage output with the largest models capable of up to 5,000 watts.

With independent DSP processing available for every channel, a preset wizard streamlines the setup process simplifying amplifier configuration and deployment. Advanced DSP includes cross-over filters, parametric EQ, alignment delay and other dynamics processing and when paired with QSC loudspeakers, Intrinsic Correction™ processing techniques may be employed to ensure optimum sonic performance. The integration of DSP with amplification means that the onboard processor is aware of what the amplifier is doing. This enables the dynamics processing and protection circuitry to be far more accurate and effective. USB interfaces on the rear panels allow firmware updates as well as the ability to upload loudspeaker tunings and configurations and transfer data between amplifiers. Multiple DSP-controlled power saving modes combined with the Class-D design ensure high efficiency, low weight, and economical cost of ownership.

Designed specifically for the needs of integrators, CXD Series amplifiers provide efficient, robust and extraordinarily high fidelity power capable of driving multiple amplifier channels and loudspeaker configurations while simultaneously deploying sophisticated digital processing – all with optimal energy and efficiency. The CXD lineup includes the CXD4.2 (400W @ 8 ohms, continuous), the CXD4.3 (625W @ 8 ohms, continuous) and the CXD4.5 (1150W @ 8 ohms, continuous) with the CXD 4.3 and CXD4.5 able to direct drive 70V and 100V systems. The rear panel features four (4) balanced Euroblock input connectors and four (4) Euroblock touch-proof loudspeaker connectors enabling integrators to terminate wiring before connecting to the amplifier. GPIO located on the rear panel offers additional functionality including a heartbeat output for Life-Safety supervision. In addition to their outstanding efficiency, the CXD amplifiers’ power saving modes further ensure that energy costs will be kept to a minimum over the life of the installation.

PLD Series Amplifiers, designed specifically for portable sound applications, provide efficient, robust and extraordinarily high-fidelity power to drive multiple channels of loudspeakers while simultaneously deploying sophisticated digital processing, all with minimal operational complexity. The PLD line consists of the PLD4.2 (400W @ 8 ohms, continuous), the PLD4.3 (625W @ 8 ohms, continuous) and the PLD4.5 (1150W @ 8 ohms, continuous). The rear panel features four (4) balanced XLR input connectors with loop-thru and six (6) Speakon® NL4 loudspeaker connectors for easy setup. The on-board processing is managed via front panel controls with 20 factory settings included for the most common applications. For more customized settings, the included Configuration Wizard helps streamline system setup and configuration. PLD amplifiers combine improved system performance with a wide and flexible range of options for future systems growth.

CXD and PLD Series Amplifiers will be available in July 2013.

South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa in Las Vegas Builds to the Future with Complete QSC Audio System

South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa, Las Vegas

Las Vegas, NV (June 2013) — South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa, the first mega-resort to be built south of McCarran Airport on the Las Vegas Strip, has installed a QSC Audio Q-Sys(TM) Core 500i network processor, CX Series amplifiers and AcousticDesign(TM) ceiling speakers to handle paging and P.A. in its recently expanded Arena and Equestrian Center. The resort, which purchased the QSC Audio components through Solotech Las Vegas, intends to extend the Q-Sys network into a $30 million bowling arena planned for completion at the beginning of 2016.

The property opened at the very end of 2006, and added QSC Audio BASIS networked audio products to the resort, reports Jason Lein, South Point’s production manager. “When we expanded the arena we took the opportunity to upgrade the processing in there from BASIS to the new Q-Sys 500i. The system has so much processing power that all of the bowling arena expansion will be run off that same core as well. The bowling center will be built for broadcast TV and we’ll have two new equestrian arenas as well—we’ll run it all off that same system.”

South Point recently expanded a concourse and added meeting rooms to its Arena and Equestrian Center, which features a 4,600-seat show arena, an indoor practice arena and a covered outside arena. The center also hosts motor sports and other events in addition to equestrian shows.

Using the new Core 500i, adds Lein, “We created four different concourse zones. We’ve got a bar, tunnels, a practice arena and 1200 air-conditioned horse stalls; the new meeting rooms located on the concourse. We run approximately 144 different page configuration options, using both wired and wireless mics for paging. Depending on what horse events are in here we have to set up several different page zoning scenarios on the fly.”

Lein and his crew installed a dozen AcousticDesign AD-CI52ST two-way, high fidelity in-ceiling speakers in the concourse and meeting rooms, as well as TSC-3 networked touch screen controllers in the meeting rooms. South Point added QSC CX602 amplifiers to power the new ceiling speakers. “Everything is QSC amp-based, even in the main arena,” reports Lein. “We’ve got some PowerLight 4.0 amps from the original install that we never need to replace, and we’re using the PL380s as well.”

Production staff members typically employ wireless control of the Q-Sys set-up, says Lein. “Whichever tech crew is assigned to an event will grab an iPad or the computer controller and set the paging configurations up prior to that show, based on that event’s needs. Switching from the BASIS to the Q-Sys system made it very easy for us to program these iPad-controllable UCIs [user control interfaces] to fit those needs, then reset the whole system before the next event, and then set up the next event, all off these UCIs. The Q-Sys system has been a big benefit for that alone.”

At the end of April, South Point, Las Vegas Events and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority jointly announced a 12-year agreement with the United States Bowling Congress to host seven championship events in Las Vegas beginning in 2016. South Point, which already features a 64-lane Bowling Center, home to the Professional Bowlers Association’s World Series of Bowling, will build a two-story complex housing a 60-lane bowling facility outfitted with the latest technology on the top floor and two additional horse arenas—sound isolated from the floor above—on the lower level.

“When we get into the new expansion, the two new arena bowls, we’ll install the new QSC AcousticDesign Series speakers,” says Lein. “We’ll be installing over 100 of the 5 ¼-inch AD-CI52ST ceiling speakers throughout the bowling center hallways. We’ll also be installing AcousticDesign series speakers for the bowling lanes, with QSC subs placed throughout the bowling center. We’ll probably be adding more Q-Sys I/O Frames later this year.”

The upgrade to the Q-Sys system’s advanced Layer 3 networking technology has made it easier for Lein to program the new set-up. “Our new design with Q Sys, where the schematics are all-in- one is phenomenal. It definitely makes it easier on the programmer,” he observes. Lein also praises the remote access offered by the system. “We’ve got one or two people, myself included, who handle the programming. When we’re at home and we get service calls, it’s so great to be able to have the remote Signal Probe and be able to analyze what’s going on with the system from anywhere.”

“Because of the powerful Q-Sys DSP processing engines, we have been able to offer Acoustic Echo Cancellation as an integrated feature to serve our customers,” says Joe Peavey, QSC Product Manager, Software. “The tight integration between the Q-Sys processor, DSP, hardware and control software, gives Q-Sys the ability to do AEC on audio signals coming from any number of sources such as mics, remotes, I/O frames and even over IP streams.”

Current Q-Sys customers can enjoy the AEC feature at no charge by upgrading to Q-Sys Designer Release 3.0 or newer. More information on the upgrade, as well as a new Q-Sys AEC whitepaper can be found at: www.qscmarketing.com/aec.

“We are excited to be able to offer AEC to our customers with Q-Sys,” adds Peavey. “And we continually have plans in the QSC pipeline to add more advanced and powerful features to Q-Sys which will benefit our customers. “

Q-Sys, the complete integrated system platform that encompasses everything from the audio input to loudspeakers, provides all the audio routing, processing, control and monitoring necessary for any facility while maintaining the audio quality and reliability QSC has come to be known for. Designed for the rigorous requirements of both small and large-scale venues, the power of Q-Sys has been demonstrated worldwide in a variety of applications, including stadiums and arenas, theme parks, performing arts venues, transportation hubs, corporate boardrooms, convention halls, government facilities, hotels and casinos and houses of worship.
