Invisible projector illuminates massive screen in award-winning private home theater

Pelham, New York’s Advanced Home Environments (AHE), a custom technology integrator specializing in modern home entertainment, control and communication systems, recently completed a private home theater that delivers large-scale visual impact with hidden hardware. Aided by Acoustic Smart, a New York-based home theater fabrication and design company, the award-winning 17’ wide by 24’ long dedicated theater contains a remarkable amount of advanced audio-video solutions, all tastefully concealed within a stylish theater design. At the heart of this 10-seat theater dwells a 3-chip DLP projector, delivering dazzling imagery to a 143” diagonal Stewart screen.

A high-contrast HIGHlite projector from Digital Projection International (DPI) was specifically chosen to drive the theater’s visual impact. “The projector’s quality, reliability and selection of interchangeable focal length lenses made it an easy decision,” stated Peter Sherman, owner of AHE. As the projector needed to be hidden from view, the diversity of lens choices allowed Sherman to hide the projector within a closet behind the rear wall of the theater without compromising the image quality. Complementing the HIGHlite is a 143” diagonal Stewart Filmscreen Cinecurve screen.

In regards to content, a combination of HD DVR cable boxes, Kaleidescape players, security cameras and an internet-enabled Samsung Blu-ray player handle most of the visuals in the theater and beyond. Winner of a 2013 Crestron Integration award, a Crestron whole-home entertainment and control system automates the key systems throughout. The theater also boasts a state-of-the-art Meridian surround sound system with a Meridian 861 Surround Sound Processor and a Meridian 7.2 channel digital DSP speaker system with all of the speakers completely concealed. Sherman made a point to comment on his experience with DPI, saying, “DPI provided us with excellent tech support, both in helping us select the right equipment and during the installation process.” Congratulations to Advanced Home Environments on creating this distinct, impactful theater experience for their elated client.

360 degree immersive driving simulator upgrade delivers detail, color and lifetime illumination

If you’ve travelled a roadway in the United States, you’ve likely benefitted from the work accomplished at the University of Iowa’s National Advanced Driving Simulator (NADS) facility. Known worldwide for creating custom simulated driving environments for public and private organizations, the NADS facility offers a premier destination for driving data collection. In order to extend their reputation as a future-focused solutions provider, the facility is in the midst of a major video upgrade in their NADS-1 immersive driving simulator. The full system upgrade will be completed, to the relief of the NADS team, by the end of January, 2014, as the facility has, per Omar Ahmad, director of operations at NADS, “a huge backlog of studies waiting for the facility to reopen.”

Located within the NADS facility, the NADS-1 is a 360-degree driving simulator with one of the largest motion envelopes of any simulator in the world. Already well recognized for its immersive experience, the team is upgrading the NADS-1 from an eight-projector to an all-encompassing 16-projector imaging system. Sixteen M-Vision LED projectors from Digital Projection International (DPI) were chosen to deliver the immersive content in the wraparound simulator. “From the projector capabilities to the incredible support we received from Phil Laney throughout the research phase,” shared Ahmad, “DPI stood out as the obvious choice.” The 40 degree vertical field of view plus 360 degree horizontal plane ensures that when sitting in the seat of the NADS-1, the viewer experiences 100% projected imagery with no break in the content.

With federal funding from the Department of Transportation, as well as regional funding from both the state of Iowa and the University of Iowa, NADS was always intended to be a shared-use facility for both government and industry use. “Whether public or private, there are no restrictions on the type of client we take in,” commented Ahmad. “This alone allows for a remarkably diverse stream of testing and resulting data to pass through the facility.” The transportation industry in particular is a regular client, as the facility produces controlled risk studies that analyze driving performance based on controlled levels of impairment in a very realistic environment. From that data, the NADS team builds algorithms that can predict driving performance based on sleep deprivation, intoxication, distraction and other impairments.

Ahmad insists that, although the NADS facility contains remarkably forward-focused technological advances, the facility’s success is equally due to the personnel’s experience and expertise. The combination of a world-renowned staff of experts and the advanced simulation capabilities allows for the creation of very specific, customized in-house simulation experiences. “We have a diverse collection of experts from disciplines across various fields that can work together to solve complex problems,” Ahmad explained. “Our depth in personnel brings us clients that can’t achieve their required type of research at another facility.” The staff is fully supported by NADS projects, ensuring that the facility remains profitable by creating custom, differentiated data solutions not available elsewhere.

Phil Laney, director of simulation and visualization at DPI, commented: “By using DPI’s affordable WUXGA LED projector technology, the National Advanced Driving Simulator will benefit from a 63% increase in resolution that not only improves the display performance of the simulator, but makes maintenance minimal for years to come.” Laney continued, “Rich, saturated LED imagery will improve fidelity in day scenes, LED dimming will improve night imagery and Fast Frame blur reduction will help the realism of any projected scene.”

World’s first 3-chip DLP projector with LED illumination to launch at IITSEC 2013 conference

For regular I/ITSEC show updates, please visit www.digitalprojection.com/iitsec

ATLANTA, GA – 11/21/2013 – After two years of intensive development and market feedback, the world’s first 3-chip DLP LED projector is now in production. Digital Projection International (DPI), Texas Instruments’ first DLP projector partner and the only projector manufacturer to win an Emmy for engineering development, proudly announces the TITAN WUXGA LED 3D. I/ITSEC, the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference, will supply the ideal product launch event for this simulation-oriented display from December 2 – December 5, 2013, in Orlando, Florida.

Available now for simulation projects demanding long-life illumination with minimal consumables and remarkable color accuracy, DPI’s TITAN LED delivers a remarkable value set to the simulation and virtual reality (VR) markets. As the brightest LED projection solution available today, the 2,000-lumen TITAN LED enlists premium LED elements for over 60,000 hours of consistent illumination. DPI’s single-chip LED displays are already well-recognized for their virtually maintenance-free operation. Impressive as they are, the new TITAN LED surpasses these performance benchmarks by additionally producing imagery in the widest color gamut currently possible. The TITAN LED also brings an incredibly low cost of ownership over the display’s lifespan due to the elimination of lamp replacement costs. Add to these points of value the low heat and low noise output of the TITAN LED and simulation environments now have the ideal imaging solution.

The 1920 x 1200 resolution TITAN WUXGA LED 3D is based on Texas Instruments’ 3-chip DLP technology. Therefore, the TITAN LED is free of the single-chip color artifacts sometimes experienced in single-chip DLP displays. A further advantage to the TITAN’s 3-chip platform is the high-bit signal processing inherent in 3-chip DLP projectors. For simulation applications needing IR capabilities, LED+IR versions of the TITAN are also available. Additionally, TITAN LED+IR projectors are also available with dual input control, enabling the simultaneous display and control of two streams of video. Due to the anticipated impact the new TITAN LED will have on the simulation and VR markets, DPI has built a substantial backlog that will begin shipping in December, 2013.

DPI will reveal a LED projector solution-filled exhibit space in booth #2181 at the upcoming I/ITSEC 2013 trade show. I/ITSEC attendees will witness the launch of brand-new imaging solutions from DPI, as well as proven projectors in partner booths throughout the show floor. I/ITSEC promotes cooperation among the Armed Services, Industry, Academia and various Government agencies in pursuit of improved training and education programs, identification of common training issues and development of multiservice programs. The trade show takes place in the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida, from December 2 – December 5, 2013.
