Regal 1940’s-era movie palace reinvented as leading edge live events venue through major audiovisual upgrade

“To reopen the Joy successfully, flexibility and advanced technology had to be key components. Digital Projection’s TITAN Quad projectors open the doors to film festivals, corporate presentations, private parties and so much more.”
-Sandie McNamara, director of marketing, Joy Theater

Atlanta, GA (3-20-2012) – Originally established in 1947 with the distinction of being the first movie palace to be constructed in New Orleans following the Depression era’s period of economic decline, the Joy Theater is one of the few remaining examples of a post-war movie palace. Recently, the Joy’s historical pedigree was given a future-focused boost in the form of a comprehensive facilities update that included bold upgrades to the theater’s audiovisual capabilities. Under the guidance of PSX Audiovisual Technologies, the Joy Theater now contains cutting-edge entertainment components that set it above and beyond other venues in the region.

The Joy Theater’s newest incarnation contains a compelling juxtaposition of past and future. Insistent on choosing only leading edge audio and video solutions, the Joy Theater’s owners approached the update with a very future-focused perspective. Visitors to the Joy will immediately notice the commitment to preserving the architectural flourishes found in such a historic venue. However, the incredible imaging and audio experiences delivered within the theater immediately remind visitors that they are in an exceedingly capable venue. This respect for the past, tempered with a commitment to delivering a very advanced audiovisual experience, makes the Joy Theater all the more compelling.

As the Joy’s heritage was built on showcasing Hollywood’s golden era in grand scale, dazzling imagery was always an integral piece of the update. An expansive 32’6” W x 22’6” D x 4’ H stage area presented the opportunity to employ multiple screens, as opposed to a single image. After significant research and an on-site demonstration, three of Digital Projection International’s newly launched TITAN Quad 1080p-3D projectors were selected to drive the imagery for all three screens. The three Draper screens include one center 27’ diagonal screen bookended by two 13.5’ surfaces. Accenting the imagery is an assortment of JBL Cinema Series and Vertec audio equipment. A Crestron Digital Media system handles all aspects of video transport and control for the venue.

The TITAN Quad projection systems provided solutions to specific venue concerns. Namely, the projectors needed to be extremely bright, yet run quietly with minimal heat output as they had to be installed in an open area, directly above the audience. Delivering 16,000 lumens of remarkable image brightness, DPI’s TITAN Quad projectors are exceedingly efficient for such powerful displays. Their innovative four-lamp illumination system produces less heat, and as a result, the system employs smaller fans, thus generating far less fan noise than previously possible.

Additionally, the four lamp system allows the projectors to produce compelling imagery at all times, even in the unlikely case where a lamp expires during the middle of a production. This redundancy is essential in live performances where it is not practical to take a projector off-line for lamp swaps or maintenance. Ed Vigueira, systems engineer for PSX, highlighted this valuable detail, commenting, “The Quad’s multiple lamp system ensures that, even if you happen to lose a lamp, the show goes on.”

Because of the system updates, the Joy Theater has now been transformed from a movie theater to a fully equipped live venue. “When the theater was built in 1947, movies were the big game in entertainment,” commented Sandie McNamara, director of marketing for the Joy Theater. “As part of the planning process, consumer wants and needs were taken into account.” McNamara continued, “Entertainment today means so many things — live music, comedy, movies, presentations, dinner — there is a tremendous amount of competition.” Today, the Joy is primarily using the projectors to display IMAG events and Scala-managed digital signage content. But this is only the beginning of their plans, as, per Ed Vigueira of PSX, “DPI’s Quads allow the Joy Theater to pursue live simulcast events, film festivals, traveling exhibits and a world of other future growth opportunities.”

Menlo Park multi-campus house of worship celebrates impressive systems upgrade

Atlanta, GA (3-14-2012) – Paul Wonsek Associates (PWA) of Marietta, GA, and Michael Garrison Associates (MGA) of Fresno, CA, recently implemented an impressive $2 million renovation of Menlo Park Presbyterian Church. This ambitious project included upgrades to the existing acoustics, audio and video systems in addition to other building systems upgrades. Menlo Park Presbyterian Church’s “home campus” attracts a diverse group of people to multiple weekend services held in two separate venues. More than 3,000 people attend services over four sites on a weekend.

With their home campus in Menlo Park, California, the Menlo Park Presbyterian network delivers 11 services each weekend from multiple locations. The main weekly programs take place at the Menlo Park headquarters, and are then broadcast live to their satellite locations in San Mateo, the Bay Area and Mountain View. Worship services hosted in the Menlo Park sanctuary include both traditional and informal services, where a live worship band and video messaging enlist the newly upgraded projection and audio equipment.

Three retractable projection screens were installed in the 1,100 capacity main sanctuary: one 9.0′x 16.0′Stewart Filmscreen with Ultramatte 130 and two 7.2′x 12.8′ Stewart Filmscreen with Ultramatte 130. With a long throw distance plus ambient light to contend with, three 10,000 lumen Digital Projection TITAN 1080p-700 projectors were chosen to deliver the imagery to each screen.

For Durst and MGA, the project was a resounding success. Said Garrison, “We went from working with a church concerned that their budget might limit what the systems could accomplish to people thrilled with the finished product.”

Many thanks to Menlo Park Presbyterian Church, Michael Garrison Associates and everyone else involved that selected DP’s precision displays for this commanding installation.

Vancouver Canucks use projected imagery to create unprecedented fan experience

Atlanta, GA (3-14-2012) – Established in 1970, the Vancouver Canucks now call the 475,000 square foot Rogers Arena home. Already well-respected as the official ice hockey venue during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, the Canucks brand and creative team wanted to set a new, and largely unchartered, direction for the venue. Led by creative director Mark Raham, the Canucks contacted Epic Production Technologies to discuss large-scale imagery solutions for the venue. Given the numerous installation details to consider, as well as the large surface area that needed to be illuminated, Larry Darling, VP of Sales for Epic Production Technologies, suggested Digital Projection International’s (DPI) high-brightness projectors.

After initially selecting lower lumen displays, four 30,000 lumen LIGHTNING 45 sx+ displays were eventually chosen. The Canucks couldn’t be more pleased, as Raham remarked, “We’re so glad we went with the higher lumen displays because they have so much visual punch. We’re discovering new ways to use them every time we work with them.” The LIGHTNING displays are used in conjunction with Hippotizer servers and a Datapath X4 processor to project a blended and mapped 200′ x 80′ image on the ice. To add dimension and scale, the ice projections are complemented by four hanging scrims, reaching four storeys in height, creating a vertical projection surface above each corner of the ice surface.

In order for the projected imagery to fit within the frame of the rink, the projectors needed to be installed above the ice, as close to each center half of the ice as possible. This presented a challenge, however, as the LIGHTNING displays also had to be installed low enough to shoot under a massive clock. Furthermore, the projectors had to dodge lighting trusses, banners and other suspended accessories. It was decided that the LIGHTNING displays would be installed 90′ above the ice, enlisting the integrated pitch, roll and yaw adjustments found in DPI’s RapidRig rigging frames. The expanded lens shift capabilities inherent in the LIGHTNING platform continue to aid the team in precisely mapping their graphics to the ice surface.

With such powerful displays in their creative arsenal, the Canucks production team are regularly discovering new ways to, as Raham describes, “make the venue itself an all-encompassing, immersive experience.” To date, attendees will experience an approximately 10-12 minute custom-created pre-game ceremony, including imagery shown during national anthems. Additionally, at key moments in the game when action on the ice has paused, the displays reveal imagery mapped to specific surface details on the ice, such as boundary lines and logos. A massive light show occurs at the end of each intermission, enlisting the projectors to elevate the intensity level of the crowd with rock-concert styled effects. A final application includes the three stars presentation at the end of the game, with custom graphics accentuating the awards ceremony.

Darling and Raham are both elated with the impact the projectors have already made. According to Darling, “The upgraded fan experience really stood out during last year’s playoffs. TV broadcasters started to show the venue as soon as they possibly could so that they could show off the imagery.” Raham agrees, stating, “Our initial goal was to take the Canucks fan experience to the next level by making the venue come alive. Our fans expect and deserve to have an amazing experience every time they walk in the arena. We’ve had a great response so far and we can’t wait to unveil our next ideas.”

Digital Projection’s TITAN Quad Illuminates Regional Porsche 911 Launch

Atlanta, GA (3-8-2012) – Porsche fans are some of the most exuberant auto enthusiasts in the world. With this is mind, how do you launch a new Porsche model in a way that lives up to the expectations of the enthusiast community? An Atlanta-based Porsche dealership and Audio Automation & Theater, Inc. (AAT), an Atlanta-based luxury AV integrator, unveiled the solution. Using Digital Projection International’s (DPI) incredibly powerful TITAN Quad projector, 16,000 lumens of Porsche as Art imagery transformed the dealership’s front façade into a stunning visual display.

For over 11 years, AAT has specialized in state of the art home entertainment. However, through their multi-faceted team and fervent love of the Porsche brand, AAT has taken on the audio and video duties for numerous Porsche product launches over the years. Recently, the launch of the newest Porsche 911 (known within Porsche as the 991) allowed AAT the opportunity to project a 572″ x 270″ spectacle onto the front of dealership as a welcoming beacon to the launch attendees. The 633″ diagonal image included custom content created by the Porsche creative team, including test track footage of the new 991 in action, stock imagery and more.

Serving as both the first and last impression made on the attendees, Kevin Collins, owner of AAT, knew that the imagery had to blow viewers away. This was a difficult proposition, however, as the projected image would have to contend with a large amount of direct and ambient exterior lighting. Furthermore, the projector would need to be rugged enough to withstand an outdoor installation with little protection from the elements. Collins had worked previously with the TITAN line, and settled deploying a single TITAN Quad for the event, due to its brightness, image quality and rugged design.

According to Collins, “The content looked amazing. Fall and winter launches are our favorites, as it gets dark so early. As the sun began to set, attendees became more and more engaged by the content. At sun down, the imagery became a beacon to passersby and attendees alike, serving as the perfect complement to the gorgeous new 911 on display.”

Numerous inquiries from those in attendance hinted that there could be similar events to come, which couldn’t make Collins and his team any happier. “This sort of event is a perfect example as to why my firm only uses DPI projectors,” noted Collins. He continued, “They offer a diverse product line, and I know that regardless of the display that I choose, I will always get the best image quality possible.”
