Motion Magic Finishes “China’s Got Talent” with DaVinci Resolve and Compact Videohub

Blackmagic Design today announced that Motion Magic, one of China’s leading television production facilities, installed Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve color correction system and Compact Videohub routers to complete post production work on “China’s Got Talent”.

As the post production studio designated for “China’s Got Talent”, Motion Magic has been providing its full range of services for the Chinese version of the popular reality show since its first episode. Motion Magic formed a specific project team consisting of its best editors, graphic designers, colorists and system designers and created a sophisticated post production workflow for “China’s Got Talent”, offering exceptional creative and technical services for the hit program.

To support a post production solution ideal for “China’s Got Talent”, Motion Magic renovated its facility by installing a brand new full HD production workflow, featuring DaVinci Resolve and two Compact Videohubs.

“Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve offers great features and performance at an affordable price, and uses an open architecture compatible with a wide range of third party hardware components, which is essential for color grading for television,” said Rick Lee, Supervisor of System Department, Motion Magic.
He continued: “DaVinci Resolve has contributed a lot to ‘China’s Got Talent’, as its real time performance and Power Mastering are great time savers for TV shows on a tight schedule such as ‘China’s Got Talent’. Also, noise reduction helps us easily eliminate noise instead of enhancing both useful and useless information. Beyond ‘China’s Got Talent’, we are also now beginning to use Resolve to grade new features and documentaries.”
Motion Magic also installed two Blackmagic Design Compact Videohub 40 x 40 routers, to replace their previous manual patching boards, for all video connections and switching. Lee said, “Video routers are the heart of a machine room, which means they must be extremely reliable. Blackmagic Design’s Compact Videohub is affordable and incredibly reliable. What’s more, with Compact Videohub, we can now simply manage switching on an Apple iPad or in front of a computer without manual patching, eliminating cable impairments and signal interferences, which is a leap in convenience and technology.”

About Motion Magic
Motion Magic, a subsidiary of Toonmax Transmission under Shanghai Media Group (SMG), is dedicated to bringing the best technologies to film and video productions. It has state of the art equipment and experienced artists, offering full production services ranging from CG animation, TVC, telecine, shooting, recording to studio design. London Fashion Week comes to life with Blackmagic Design!

Blackmagic Design today announced that production house Brightonart Ltd built a comprehensive AV control solution around Blackmagic Design’s ATEM 1 M/E Production Switcher to capture runway looks from Vauxhall Fashion Scout, the largest independent showcase of the Fall 2012 London Fashion Week.

Internationally recognized as a driving force behind innovation in fashion, Vauxhall Fashion Scout actively promotes both new and seasoned designers to an international audience through catwalk shows, presentations, fashion films and exhibitions. Based during London Fashion Week at the Freemasons’ Hall in central London, Fashion Scout looked to Brightonart to produce the catwalk videos that would be uploaded to Vimeo.

Brightonart used Blackmagic Design’s ATEM 1 M/E Production Switcher to cut live footage from HD-SDI video feeds shot by two Sony EX-1 cameras. Program output was then captured on two SSD recorders; a Blackmagic Design HyperDeck Studio recording uncompressed 10-bit as a rolling backup and the other using DNxHD or ProRes as the master working file. Signal distribution was handled by Blackmagic’s Multibridge Pro, which took care of the audio embed. The ATEM 1 M/E was also used for static or animated graphic loops that the designers wanted projected on the back wall of the runway, which were run out of an auxiliary port on the switcher and managed on a PC using Resolume Avenue VJ Software.

“Because we did the live cut out of the ATEM 1 M/E down to our SSD recorders, those files went straight into Sony Vegas in ProRes,” said Mark Scarratt of Brightonart Ltd. ”We then performed an audio check, and mixed if necessary, before finally adding in the applause from the ambient microphone. Next, we inserted title and end graphics before crunching the footage down to H.264 to be uploaded to the web.”

For remote work away from the main catwalk within Freemasons‘ Hall, Brightonart used Blackmagic Design’s ATEM Television Studio, which filled the need for a compact and portable AV solution in the secondary control room. Scarratt explained, “We didn’t have the space to mirror our main set up in the second smaller hall, but the flexibility of this compact solution enabled us to provide high quality HD-SDI video at very short notice to the streaming partners brought in for additional shows, greatly surpassing their expectations.”

“Over the six days of Fashion Week, we’ve shot and cut more than 30 catwalk shows. Thanks to the Blackmagic 1080/50i workflow, only minimal post production of the footage was required, ensuring that every show was online in HD within two hours of its completion.”

About ATEM Production Switchers
Empower live creativity with the new ATEM Production Switchers! For the first time extremely powerful broadcast grade features, incredibly small size and low cost have been designed in a live production switcher! ATEM Production Switchers include 4 upstream keyers each with independent chroma, shaped and linear keying, 2 downstream keyers, stinger effects, graphic wipes, media players for stills and clips and a built in DVE for amazing DVE transitions or key repositioning. Hollywood’s SSI Advanced Post Services Installs Teranex VC100 Video Processors

Blackmagic Design today announced that SSI Advanced Post Services, one of Hollywood’s premiere post production facilities, has installed Teranex VC100 video processors as part of a massive project converting various classic television shows, such as “I Love Lucy” and “Gilligan’s Island,” to file based formats for inflight airline entertainment systems.

Installed at their Sunset Boulevard facility, SSI will use the Teranex VC100 to complete an extensive set of format and frame rate conversions on a number of television shows, transforming media of various ages and quality into the uniform format and resolutions needed for inflight television. Beyond this project, the Teranex VC100 will also be used to handle SSI’s ongoing theatrical and television trailer work, preparing trailers for use across the globe.

“Some of our biggest customers ask for Teranex by name because it ensures high quality, and we have been Teranex customers for a number of years. So it was an obvious choice to upgrade to the complete VC100 when it became available,” said SSI’s head of engineering, Gary Fradken. “With our clients, it is either high quality or it is unacceptable. Teranex not only gives that level of quality, but it is also reliable and easy to use. It just makes great pictures.”

“With the airline project, on some days we received boxes full of tapes from the 1960s, while on other days we got media with whole seasons of a show shot 30 years ago in England in PAL. Every single piece of content needs to be turned into uniform high quality file based media with the same aspect ratio and format,” continued Fradken. “The VC100 has been invaluable and handles any format thrown at it. It has particularly shined when working with media including interlaced content, which no other video processor can handle like the VC100.”

SSI upgraded to the Teranex VC100 from their existing Teranex VC300. The system joins SSI’s existing network of Blackmagic Design products, including three DaVinci Resolve color correction systems, including Resolve Control Surfaces, and 18 Blackmagic Design DeckLink HD Extreme 3D capture and playback cards. These products are used to complete color correction and post production for SSI’s work on theatrical trailers, such as the trailers for the new films “Journey 2” and “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.”

Blackmagic Design Adds Timecode and DNxHD QuickTime Support to HyperDeck SSD Recorders

Blackmagic Design today announced the release of HyperDeck 2.5 public beta, a new software update that adds embedded timecode support, DNxHD recording to QuickTime and SDI camera record triggering to its HyperDeck SSD recorders.

HyperDeck 2.5 public beta for Mac OS X and Windows is available for download now and is free of charge for all Blackmagic Design customers. This update includes support for both HyperDeck Shuttle 2 and HyperDeck Studio models of Blackmagic Design SSD recorders.

HyperDeck 2.5 software includes timecode support for both HyperDeck Shuttle and HyperDeck Studio. Timecode information embedded within the ancillary data space of HD-SDI video signals can now be written to HyperDeck’s uncompressed or Avid DNxHD compressed video files. Customers can preserve the timecode from their incoming video stream based on the standard RP-188 HD protocol and playback recorded files with this original timecode information.

HyperDeck Shuttle and HyperDeck Studio models feature Avid DNxHD record and playback that is fully certified by Avid. HyperDeck 2.5 software adds the option to record and playback DNxHD QuickTime as well as DNxHD MXF format files. The choice to wrap DNxHD files in a QuickTime format extends the opportunity to use Avid’s industry standard file encoding with a wide range of software and to suit specific workflows.

Recording to HyperDeck Shuttle can now be automatically triggered by cameras and other HD-SDI video equipment. Many professional cameras embed start/stop flags within their SDI video output and HyperDeck Shuttle now recognizes these commands to start and stop recording in sync with the camera. The advantage is that customers can now record to HyperDeck Shuttle without the need to separately activate recording on their camera and disk recorder.

As some cameras don’t output the start/stop flag in the standard way, this new update also includes a new rolling timecode record trigger feature. This means now virtually any camera or device that outputs RP-188 timecode can be used to start and stop HyperDeck Shuttle recording! HyperDeck will now watch RP-188 HD timecode and when the timecode starts counting, the HyperDeck will instantly start recording! This means even professional equipment and cameras like the ARRI ALEXA can now automatically trigger HyperDeck Shuttle to record uncompressed or DNxHD timecode synchronized files!

“This software update adds a number of valuable functions to HyperDeck,” said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “We’ve based this on feedback from HyperDeck customers on the features they needed most and this feedback reflects the wide use of HyperDeck recorders from acquisition through to content delivery.”

Blackmagic Design Adds Macros and Advanced Control Options to Videohub SDI Routers

Blackmagic Design today released Videohub 4.9 a major new software update that adds new Macro support as well as advanced network based configuration of control panels for its range of Videohub SDI routers and Smart Control panels.

Videohub 4.9 for Mac OS X and Windows is available for download now and is free of charge for all Blackmagic Design customers.

Blackmagic Design’s Videohub family of products make it truly affordable to route SD, HD and 3 Gb/s SDI video and eliminates the need for manual video patching. Videohubs range from 16 x 16 SDI up to the 288 x 288 Universal Videohub that lets customers mix SDI and optical fiber interfaces in a modular rack based design. Videohub and Universal Videohub routers can be fully controlled using networkable Videohub Control Panel software and Videohub Smart Control, a 1 rack unit hardware control panel consisting of 40 programmable buttons with full RGB illumination.

Videohub 4.9 adds new functionality for new and existing Videohub customers. The addition of macros to Videohub Smart Control means that users can now activate multiple simultaneous switching commands with a single button press. New Smart Control configuration software lets users define up to 10 macros each with their own source and destination routing commands that can then be activated by one button.

Also included is the new Smart Control software utility which provides advanced ethernet configuration options all from a single central software utility for Windows and Mac OS X. This new control utility includes a new identify function which lets users visibly select the Smart Control panel they want to configure. Pressing the identify key causes all 40 Smart Control buttons to flash. This feature is particularly useful when multiple Smart Control units are used to control a Videohub and users need to identify the correct control panel they want to configure, so setting up Videohub routing systems is simpler and configuration mistakes are eliminated. Network configuration of control panels makes it easy to assign specific inputs, outputs and now macros to particular buttons, even when a facility has hundreds of control panels. Users can also create a unique name for each panel to further aid identification.

This new software update also adds support for allowing destinations to be locked from a Smart Control panel as well as Videohub software. The ability to lock specific routes is imperative in mission critical environments to avoid accidental breaking of these connections. Pressing and holding down a chosen destination will turn the button blue and this connection cannot be broken by another attached Smart Control.

“Videohub routers are the heart of a post production or broadcast facility and therefore it’s important to have flexible and reliable methods of controlling them,” said Grant Petty, CEO of Blackmagic Design. “The addition of macros and these further new control functions gives customers a powerful set of controls that match the incredible high video quality of all Videohub models.”

Blackmagic Design Announces New Intensity Shuttle with Thunderbolt™ Technology

Blackmagic Design today announced Intensity Shuttle, a revolutionary new video capture and playback solution that uses Intel’s groundbreaking Thunderbolt™ technology. Intensity Shuttle makes the highest quality 10-bit SD and HD video affordable for everyone, in a truly portable solution that’s priced at only $239.

Intensity Shuttle will be displayed on the Intel CES 2012 booth at Central Hall #7253.

Intensity Shuttle features all the video connections needed to connect video cameras, set-top boxes, game consoles, large screen TVs and projectors to a Thunderbolt-enabled computer. The attractive inline design includes HDMI, analog component, composite and S-Video inputs and outputs. These high quality HDMI and RCA connectors are the worldwide standard for connecting digital and analog consumer video equipment.

Thunderbolt™ enabled computers connect to Intensity Shuttle using a single cable that is capable of 10 Gbps data transfer speeds, that’s 20x faster than USB 2.0 and 12x faster than FireWire 800. Intensity Shuttle is powered over the Thunderbolt™ cable and, with no need for an external power supply, is a completely portable device that can be moved easily between laptop and desktop computers.

Intensity Shuttle uses the same high quality electronics as Blackmagic Design’s high end broadcast capture and playback solutions! Now it’s possible to capture live game play, archive family movies and create amazing videos in full broadcast quality 1080HD video! Intensity Shuttle’s HDMI output can be connected to large screen HDTVs and projectors for full high resolution monitoring and playback of your work!

Most consumer video cameras compress HD video to fit longer recordings on to tapes and discs. For video editing compressed media needs to be decoded to play back each frame of video and this puts additional strain on a computer’s CPU and limits real time editing effects. Capturing directly with Intensity Shuttle bypasses camera compression by recording directly from the camera’s image sensor, so a low cost consumer camera can be used to capture full HD resolution video in broadcast quality!

Intensity Shuttle offers the flexibility of working with compressed and uncompressed video in standard definition PAL/NTSC up to full 1080p HD video. Blackmagic Design’s Media Express software is included for a complete capture and playback solution without the need for any additional software. Video files are fully compatible with popular editing and design software including Apple Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, Avid Media Composer, Adobe Photoshop and After Effects.

“Using Intensity Shuttle with Thunderbolt™ technology combines the quality and speed that videographers demand”, said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “It’s incredibly exciting when technologies come together and create new opportunities for the way people work with video. The barriers of working with broadcast quality video have gone forever and everyone can create amazing looking work!”
