Audio-Technica Mics Chosen for the 15th Consecutive Year at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

STOW, OH, April 17, 2012 — For the 15th year in a row, a broad range of Audio-Technica microphones was selected to outfit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. A-T supplied over 50 mics to capture the audio for the 27th annual induction ceremony, which took place at the historic Public Auditorium in Cleveland, Ohio, on April 14, 2012. Inductees included Guns N’ Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Donovan, Laura Nyro, The Small Faces/Faces, Beastie Boys, The Crickets, The Famous Flames, The Midnighters, The Comets, The Blue Caps and The Miracles. Freddie King received the Early Influence distinction. Non-performing honorees included Don Kirshner, Cosimo Matassa, Tom Dowd and Glyn Johns. The show will be broadcast on HBO on Saturday, May 5, 2012.

Audio-Technica’s acclaimed Artist Elite® 5000 Series UHF Wireless System was used with the AEW-T5400 handheld microphone/transmitter for frontline vocals on performances by Sara Bareilles, Joe Bonamassa, Donovan, Dusty Hill, Kid Rock, Freddie King, Ledisi, Darlene Love, Travie McCoy, John Mellencamp and house bandleader Paul Shaffer.

The backline mic complement of A-T wired microphones included AE2500 Dual-element Instrument Microphone; AE3000 Cardioid Condenser Instrument Microphone; ATM450 Cardioid Condenser Instrument Microphone; AT4050ST Stereo Condenser Microphone; AT4080 Phantom-Powered Bidirectional Ribbon Microphone; AE5400 Cardioid Condenser Handheld Microphone; and AT4054 Handheld Cardioid Condenser Microphone.

The technical staff for the induction ceremony was made up of professional audio industry veterans. Remote recording specialists M3 (Music Mix Mobile), the company responsible for both recording the program and mixing the show for broadcast, used its Eclipse remote truck with John Harris as Audio Coordinator and Music Mixer, mixing the event’s audio onsite and assigning all the inputs and microphones for the event. Joel Singer served as Audio Truck Engineer-in-Charge. The P.A. was provided by New York-based Firehouse Productions. Dave Natale served as Front-of-House Mixer, and Firehouse Productions’ Simon Welch was Monitor Mixer.

John Harris stated, “With such a varied performance roster, we need a selection of wireless and wired microphones that are able to perform flawlessly and capture audio consistently and clearly act after act. EAW® Launches Red Certification™ Training

Two-day seminar on Powercube™ power and processing module yields maximum results

Whitinsville, MA, USA, April 16, 2012 – EAW® recently announced the launch of their Red Certification™ training program in support of their Powercube™ power and processing modules. EAW will award the Red Certification status after completion of a two-day seminar conducted at the customer’s location. EAW President Jeff Rocha made the announcement.

The Red Certification training seminar consists of several sections, including:

According to Broderick, the training seminars build toward a complete understanding of EAW’s sophisticated approach to line array design, control and execution. By carefully integrating modeling software, rigging hardware and digital signal processing, users can build arrays for a range of venues and enjoy consistent results from various designs.

“Once users understand that the ‘basics’ of line array physics are incredibly complicated,” Broderick said, “they’ll appreciate the crucial role that EAW Resolution plays in designing arrays for a given venue. Eastern Acoustic Works® Debuts Next-Generation Avalon by EAW® Dance Club Loudspeakers

Whitinsville, MA, USA, April 11, 2012 – EAW®, a world-renowned loudspeaker designer and manufacturer, has announced the launch of the first two products in the all-new, next-generation Avalon by EAW line of dance club loudspeaker systems. The line was co-designed by legendary dance club designer/owner John Lyons, whose Avalon Hollywood club is a favorite performance venue for world-class DJs. Lyons worked with EAW in the late 1990s to produce the original line of Avalon loudspeakers. The announcement was made by EAW President Jeff Rocha.

“Once again, John Lyons has helped EAW go to places we never thought we could go,” Rocha said. “Not only do the loudspeakers reach a new level of performance, power and clarity, but we’ve developed fit and finish techniques that put us on a par with luxury automobile manufacturers.”

Avalon by EAW represents a radical departure from all previous dance club loudspeaker systems, putting cutting-edge acoustical technology in a package that appeals to the design-conscious dance club market. The industrial design turns the loudspeaker inside-out, mounting the exposed mid/high horn in front of the grille. And the concave grille – sculpted in clean, straight lines – expresses the bilateral symmetry that unifies the design.

The products released include the CLUB.two and CLUB.three. Each is a three-way system using a horn-loaded, ultra-efficient, coaxial mid/high compression driver. The CLUB.two includes four 12-in LF cone transducers mounted in a vertically and horizontally symmetrical pattern and axially aligned with the mid/high section. The CLUB.three uses a single, ferociously powerful 15-in LF cone mounted in a triaxial configuration behind the mid/high section.

In both cases, the symmetry allows for the application of slight mid/high delay to produce an apparent unified origin, as if output across the entire frequency range were originating from a single point. EAW has used a similar technique in a single plane across their product range for many years, and Avalon by EAW takes the technique to a new level of output and performance.

“This absolutely sets a new standard for club sound,” John Lyons said. “Beyond the power we’ve gotten from the new generation of components, the symmetry gives these systems an unprecedented level of clarity. The sonic imaging is simply amazing.”

In addition to a radical design and state-of-the-art acoustical technology, Avalon by EAW also sets a new benchmark for fit and finish in the pro audio space. The products are available in a range of color and finish options. “There is no such thing as a ‘standard’ Avalon by EAW,” Rocha said.

While base-level products can be ordered in traditional, textured black paint, customers must specify the powder-coated grilles in Siren Red, Medallion Gold, Starlight Sparkle Silver or Machine Grey. The horns and a surrounding trim piece may color match the grille or may be Piano Black.

Beyond that, customers can upgrade to a high-grade, automotive finish for the enclosures, choosing from Piano Black or Polar White. These eye-catching finish options caught the eye of many attendees at ISE in Amsterdam in February 2012, where Avalon by EAW received a special preview. “It might have been the most photographed display at the whole tradeshow,” Rocha said.

Because Avalon by EAW goes so far beyond any existing dance club loudspeaker system, Lyons and EAW have decided to set a high bar for access to them, requiring a design proposal to be submitted and approved before an order can be placed.

“The point is to ensure the every installation is an absolute gem,” Lyons said. “If you think you’re ready to step up to this level, talk to EAW. But know up-front that if you’re going to use Avalon by EAW, you’re going to do it right.”

All design proposals will undergo review by EAW’s Application Support Group (ASG). Proposals can be submitted as anonymous venues, ensuring confidentiality to the club design community. Each proposal will receive a registration number to track the project as it proceeds. As necessary, ASG will recommend revisions to the design proposal. After approval, customers can select their colors and place their orders, including the project registration number. EAW will check the order against the registered proposal to ensure that all necessary equipment is included. Once the installation is complete, ASG will inspect the installation and assist with the commissioning process.

“When the system is installed and commissioned,” Rocha said, “we’ll present the club with a plaque, stating that it is Avalon Certified. It’s the closest thing pro audio has to a velvet rope. It may sound hokey, but that club – the club of Avalon Certified venues – will be as exclusive as, well, as an Avalon Certified club.”

Beau Raymond Chooses Genelec Active Monitoring for His New Studio Facility

facility in Portland, Oregon —

Beau Raymond knows sound. Having served as the engineer or producer for a wide range of artists (Joss Stone, Motley Crüe, Weapons of Mass Destruction, Devendra Banhart, Little Joy, members of the Black Crowes, Bert Jansch, the Neptunes), and working alongside production legends (Joe Chiccarelli, Rick Rubin, Rich Costey, Pat Leonard, Bob Rock), he’s now taken his substantial experience in Los Angeles studios and migrated it to indie music hub Portland, Oregon. There he opened his 2,500-square-foot Family Farm studio in 2011. For monitoring, he turned to Active Monitors from Genelec, the world’s longstanding pioneer in active monitoring. The 6,000-square-foot building also houses a lounge and a spacious apartment for visiting recording artists. The studio has already done sessions with the Dandy Warhols, the Jayhawks and the Portland Cello Project.

Raymond is a highly critical but curious listener and a self-confessed “gear junkie,” so he was up for checking out the pair of Genelec 8260A Tri-Amplified DSP Monitors suggested to him by retailer Vintage King and brought over to his studio by Scott Esterson of Genelec. “I listened to them and they sounded good, but you can’t really understand a speaker until you’ve actually done work on them,” Raymond points out.

He used the Genelec 8260A’s to mix the unfinished tracks of a record he had been working on at that time, and during the course of the mix, he came to appreciate the 8260As’ accuracy and authenticity. But what sold him was the enthusiastic response of the mastering engineer he sent the record to after the mix. The mastering engineer immediately recognized that the record had been mixed on two different pairs of monitors, and he raved to Raymond the mix of the songs that happened to be mixed on the Genelecs. “Considerably more depth in the low end, greater accuracy and better balance across the sound field,” says Raymond. “But perhaps best of all, they were both fun and functional; they can give me the kind of volume I need for when clients want to track and listen back loud, but they actually sound great at any volume. And while I was initially skeptical of the DSP system – I always wondered if systems like that actually compensate for deficiencies in the speakers themselves – I quickly realized that the Genelec DSP system really works. The speakers sound great on their own, but the DSP brings them to the next level by adjusting them perfectly to the room they’re in. I’m glad I have them.”

New York City Hotspot Culture Club Opens New Location with Sound and Lighting Systems and Service from GC Pro

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, CA, April 9, 2012 — Guitar Center Professional (GC Pro), the outside sales division of Guitar Center that focuses on the needs of professional users, recently worked closely with Culture Club, a hip 1980s-themed New York City dance club, to supply state-of-the-art lighting and P.A. systems (as well as other gear), as it moved from its original location downtown to its new club in Midtown Manhattan. Culture Club owners Robert Watman and Najib Succar turned to GC Pro for loudspeakers from JBL; amplifiers from Crown; mixing consoles from Soundcraft; lighting from Antari and Elation Professional; DJ products from Denon, Rane and Pioneer; and a full host of equipment from several other manufacturers.

The new location, on 20 West 39th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues, opened late in 2011, and features four stories and 16,000 square feet of floor space. “It’s a very, very large dance club,” noted Co-Owner Robert Watman. “Each of the club’s four floors hosts a separate DJ with a distinct playlist. Each system is on its own floor and there’s no bleed, so if you’re on the second floor, you don’t hear what’s happening on the other floors. So you can imagine that a lot had to go into consideration. This is a brand new space that needed tons of gear, and we wanted to do it right. We wanted to make sure the P.A. was a killer system, and that it would be able to handle the amount and volume of music that it would be pumping out every night. So we turned to GC Pro, who became our one-stop vendor for the amplifiers, speakers, DJ mixers and turntables, lighting – everything, really.”

Among the hundreds of items sourced through GC Pro were several dozen JBL loudspeakers, including PRX612M, Control 29AV, ASB6125 and AM51212/95 modules; lighting equipment from Elation Professional, including EES487 spotlights and Design Wash LED 60 units; acoustic treatment from Auralex; Crown XLS2500 and XLS1500 Amplifiers; and much more. Watman is longtime personal friends with Guitar Center Manhattan store manager Judd Goldrich, who was happy to connect them the GC Pro staff as well as work closely with GC Pro personnel to augment the sound system with ancillary DJ and M.I. products and accessories. Watman recalls, “They came over, and for what they were offering in terms of a turnkey solution, they definitely came in at the right price. It was a good fit. We ended up acquiring a massive number of JBL P.A. products. It was that and lighting – intelligent lighting, LEDs, spotlights and washes. It was the right gear at the right price.”

Co-owner Najib Succar adds, “We’ve been in the club business for a long time, and had a distinct division when we were planning the new Culture Club. Working with GC Pro and Guitar Center, our vision became a reality. But the bottom line is, Culture Club has become a destination. Our patrons are from not only the tri-state area, but from around the country and abroad. They continue to come back, week after week, for the Culture Club experience.”
