Oklahoma City Sounds oh-so Pretty as Upstairs Productions Steps up to a Carl Tatz Design Dual PhantomFocus™ System

“Boy he’s not kidding about being a tough sell,” laughs Carl Tatz of Carl Tatz Design LLC and creator of the PhantomFocus System (PFS) monitor tuning protocol. “Ted has amazing ears and was determined for us to step up to the plate after being so disappointed in the past by everything he had tried to make his monitors sound the way he wanted them to.”

Tatz explains, “This was a textbook example of breaking the myth that having a well designed control room, whether designed by me or another designer, along with great monitors will render great monitoring. The fact is that the monitoring will never begin to approach the sonic impact and accuracy that the PFS can deliver – not even close – and keep in mind that most of these systems are near field.”

As part of his meticulous research, which included his studying all the literature, reading up on the various articles and reviews as well as interviewing PFS users, Curtis traveled to Nashville to experience the PFS for himself in a couple of Carl Tatz Design award winning control rooms. After hearing the systems, he quickly became a believer and decided to make the purchase. However, in spite of his being knocked out by what he heard and the assurance that we bat a thousand on all systems, his enthusiasm was still guarded because of his multiple failed past attempts to optimize the monitoring in his own room.

Expanding on his experience related to his massive console that required thoughtful consideration during the physical implementation of the PFS, Curtis observes, “The 9098i is so sensitive and precise, and the bandwidth and low-end is so remarkable, that not having proper monitoring makes it nearly impossible to work on. You simply can’t guess at it. Before we started I had an 18dB tight Q dip at 125HZ, a mountain range dip between 35Hz and 50Hz, a large bump at 20Hz, and several other issues in the 500-1550Hz range and 3-4K range. It was simply awful. It took many trips to the car to get it right IF you even got it right then. By that time you had completely lost perspective and lost all of your confidence. Well I’m glad to say now, for the first time in my life, I hear EXACTLY what I mixed in the control in both cars, absolutely no surprises. It’s really exciting if not a bit scary. I don’t have anything to blame anymore. I’ve already come a long ways in the confidence department in the short time I’ve had the PFS installed. I urge anyone who is struggling in the same way I was to give it a shot. It may likely change your life.”

Curtis continues, “Just the ability to put something in the mix in the exact place and level you want it to be, is now effortless. You simply mix it the way you want to hear it and it’s right, no more compensation. Snare drum level adjustment is easy. Additionally I’ve never experienced panning like this either. You can hear every single move, no matter how small, as you move from side to side.”

After maintaining the number one position in the Mexican food business for over 20-years in OKC with his Ted’s Cafe Escondido restaurants, Ted understands attention to detail and truly appreciates and demands the best which explains why he goes on to say, “I truly appreciated Carl’s obsession to get things right. Simply put, it’s not done until it’s done. He spent many hours getting things aligned and adjusted, then many hours more tuning, trying crossover points, re-adjusting, etc. At some point you think he’s a mad man! But when it comes time to sit in the driver’s seat, and you hear the results, you understand why he does things the way he does them. His true passion to do his best shines through. In a high-speed world where most don’t care, nor have time to do their best, Carl excels beyond anyone’s expectations.”

Curtis chose to move up to the Dynaudio Professional M1 near fields driven with the new Bryston 4B SST2 amp and use his existing ADAM S5A MK2s in a Dual PFS configuration where both near fields and mains share the same PFS frequency response curve. “The results were predictably stellar,” comments Tatz. “And Ted, who was considering closing the room down before hiring Tatz because his very high expectations were not being met, now drives his monitors with the same thrill and pinpoint accuracy as his exotic Porsche based RUF 3400K sports car.”

EAW® Hits a Grand Slam for the Miami Marlins’ New Stadium

An asymmetric stadium bowl layout required a complicated system design that used a larger number of speakers than for any baseball park previously

Whitinsville, MA, USA, May 11, 2012 – The Miami Marlins (formerly the Florida Marlins) squared off against the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals on April 4, 2012, inaugurating a new season of baseball and christening the newest page in the history of baseball stadiums. At a cost of $515 million and sited on 17 acres in the Little Havana neighborhood of Miami, Marlins Park is everything you might expect from a South Florida sports venue – lime-green outfield walls, palm trees, pink flamingos, sea gulls and smiling marlin avatars activated when a Marlin player belts a home run. And when Jose Feliciano sang the national anthem there for the first time that Wednesday afternoon, the opening-day crowd of 36,601 heard every word crisply and clearly, thanks to a remarkable sound system using components from renowned loudspeaker manufacturer Eastern Acoustic Works® (EAW®).

Using a total of 517 EAW MK, QX and MQX series loudspeakers around the bowl in a massive distributed system designed by Wrightson, Johnson, Haddon & Williams (WJHW) and installed by Minneapolis-based systems integrator Parsons Electric, the EAW system was able to address a unique and challenging architectural issue. Marlins Park has a retractable roof, but in order to best take advantage of the sun for its natural-grass field, the stadium had to be angled in such a way that the grass get as much exposure to the sun as possible between games. As a result, rather than the usual half-dozen or so section templates in the seating areas for which a basic configuration of speakers would make up a repeatable pattern, this system’s design required over 30 individual section drawings, with nearly every one of the upper-deck sections being unique. Thus, speaker placement and aiming was different for virtually every location on the upper deck. In all, the 517 speakers were grouped into 23 categories, in some cases with multiple EAW speakers used to cover a single area. In addition, the stadium’s asymmetrical design meant that focal points often needed different throw-length speakers set at different distances and patterns. For instance, the area around home plate uses the EAW MQX8343-MS-WP long-throw enclosure from one side, but is matched on the baseline sides and outfield porch by a shorter-throw QX564-WP unit.

“The system design was very complex, but the EAW speakers were exactly what we needed to make it work,” says Tim Habedank, Systems Specialist at Parsons Electric. “On opening day, the sound was clear and highly intelligible, even over the noise of a capacity crowd.”

Habedank adds that while the roof is likely to be closed for most events at the stadium, the long reverb time when it is closed, particularly in the lower frequencies, will remain under complete control, thanks to the precise aiming pattern that the EAW speakers are capable of. “We were able to achieve very tight pattern control across the spectrum,” he says. “Yet at the same time the longest-throw speakers maintain the coherence of the sound for distances of between 200 and 300 feet. It’s really remarkable performance and the sound of the stadium shows it.”

Adam Shulman Appointed as EAW® Installed Systems Support Manager

Company continues to expand its Application Support Group with additional personnel

Whitinsville, MA, USA, May 10, 2012 – EAW®, a world leader in audio system solutions, announces the expansion of its Application Support Group (ASG) with the appointment of Adam Shulman to the position of Installed Systems Support Manager, effective immediately. The announcement was made by Jeff Rocha, EAW President, and further underscores EAW’s dedication to customer support and the ongoing development of market-driven products.

In this newly-created role, Shulman will manage ASG support for all permanently installed sound systems, while longtime ASG resource Joe Fustolo will focus on mobile production customers. Rocha states, “Expanding ASG and bringing in a world-class resource like Adam, who is dedicated exclusively to the installation markets, further demonstrates our commitment to supporting our customers and partners. “Increasing global demand for ASG service, particularly in overseas markets, necessitated the expansion. Prior to joining EAW, Adam has served as a Senior Consultant and Project Manager for SIA Acoustics (New York, Los Angeles and India) since 2003. He has provided acoustical and technical system design for a variety of projects including performing arts spaces, recording facilities, sports venues and houses of worship. Projects of note include a production facility and 3,500-seat arena for Healing Place Church in Baton Rouge, LA, Oriole Park at Camden Yards, and The Pearl at the Palms Concert Hall in Las Vegas. In a production context, Adam has also designed and operated sound systems for live events, including Central Park SummerStage, the Madison Square Park Music series and various special events domestically and internationally. As an educator, Adam has authored numerous articles for various trade publications, and presented at Broadway Sound Master Classes, Palme Asia, ShowWay Italy and Audio Engineering Society conventions.

Shulman notes, “I feel that I can bring my past experience as a consultant to bear on the varied types of design projects ASG handles, applying my technical knowledge combined with a practical understanding of how installation projects actually work.”

Valparaiso, Indiana’s The Alley Recording Company Stands Above the Pack with Help from GC Pro

— Chief engineer and co-partner Marc Nelson keeps the overhead low in small-city Indiana, offering great value to acts from nearby Chicago and elsewhere —

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, CA, May 3, 2012 — The Alley Recording Company, located in the arts-friendly city of Valparaiso, Indiana, is the brainchild of co-partner and chief engineer Marc Nelson. After a stint at the Chicago Recording Company and time spent as a protégée of producer legend Bill Schnee (Carly Simon, Whitney Houston, Steely Dan), Nelson decided to open his own studio in 2008 in his hometown of Valparaiso, despite a shaky economy and an even shakier studio industry, an atmosphere in which far more studios were shutting down than opening successfully. Nelson and co-partner Chad Clifford saw the opportunity to keep the overhead low in the small yet arts-rich Valparaiso, and offer a friendly, thrifty alternative to the studios in nearby Chicago. “We initially thought about opening a facility in Chicago, but competition kept me out – there are about 425 studios there alone,” Nelson recalls. “And out here there is zero overhead. Our rent is very low and I would say we are the nicest studio between here and Indianapolis.” The business model is paying off so far, with The Alley bringing a new level of studio professionalism to the area. The studio has an impressive arsenal of gear, much of which was sourced through Guitar Center Professional (GC Pro), the outside sales division of Guitar Center that focuses on the needs of professional users, and with whom Nelson has a longstanding relationship. “If I ever need something, GC Pro is always there,” notes Nelson. “I can’t stress enough how important they have been to my studio, simply because they always deliver.”

The two-suite facility certainly does not disappoint in terms of size, aesthetics and gear. The large live room measures 28 feet by 20 feet with 14-foot ceilings, with two isolation booths adjacent. Instruments include a Yamaha C3 grand piano, a Wurlitzer spinet, a vintage set of Ludwig drums, a Hammond A100 organ, various mallet percussion instruments, and guitars from such manufacturers as Gibson, Taylor and Rickenbacker, among other instruments. Nelson selected Focal Twin6 Be three-way monitors with matching subwoofer for his control room. “These are the only monitors I use and for my size, they are perfect. The top end is never shrill and they have plenty of power,” he states. His main console is a 36-channel MCI-Sony MXP-3000, which he runs with his Avid Pro Tools|HD2 system. The console also features eight integrated preamplifiers customized by Greg Norman from Electrical Audio. Outboard amplifiers include models from Daking, Great River, Chandler, Universal Audio, Vintech, Avalon and others. Other gear includes limiters and compressors from Summit, API, Empirical Labs and Chandler. And of course the microphone closet is fully stocked, with units from Audio-Technica, Blue, AKG, Flea (Flea 47 and Flea C12), Royer, Shure, Schoeps and others, which Nelson has mostly bought in pairs.

Valparaiso is known for its great music community, and Nelson spearheaded a 13-episode PBS series, “Live at the Alley,” filmed entirely at the studio. PBS has since asked the studio to do a second season. Nelson notes, “The main thing for the PBS series was for us to host high quality live performances – it wasn’t about money or even advertising the studio.” But the show has indeed raised the studio’s profile, and more and more acts from the Chicago area are turning to The Alley. “We got many of the large Chicago groups and a handful of others from Boston to Los Angeles involved with what we’re doing here. Let’s hope our good luck continues!”

Audio-Technica and Celebrated Artists Support Music Education

— Nine scholarships/donations honor A-T’s 50th anniversary —

Audio-Technica, a leading innovator in transducer technology, officially kicked off its 50th Anniversary Year in the U.S. with a special gala event held January 19, 2012, during the Winter NAMM Show in Anaheim, California. The event featured an all-star music revue produced by legendary GRAMMY® Award-winning producer Phil Ramone. Among the featured all-star cast of performers were saxophonist and longtime Audio-Technica endorser Mindi Abair, R&B/jazz vocalist Patti Austin, new age/adult-contemporary superstar and Audio-Technica endorser Jim Brickman, smooth jazz saxophonist Dave Koz, vocalist Monica Mancini, legendary trumpeter/pianist/composer Arturo Sandoval, gospel/R&B music legend BeBe Winans and Canadian jazz-pop vocalist Nikki Yanofsky. In commemoration of the event, all eight performers have decided to donate their performance honoraria to different music education programs and institutions, helping promote the importance of music education and assisting students in their pursuits.

Greg Pinto, Audio-Technica U.S. Vice President of Marketing and Consumer Sales, stated, “It was thrilling to have Phil Ramone produce the concert, and to have these eight world-class artists perform at our anniversary celebration in Anaheim marking ‘50 Years of Passionate Listening,’ and it is a special honor that they are donating these funds toward music education, a cause that is very near to the hearts of the A-T family.”

Phil Ramone donated his honorarium to The Salvation Army’s Phil Ramone Orchestra for Children. Austin is also donating her honorarium to the Berklee College of Music. Brickman is giving to his alma mater Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM), creating the Jim Brickman/Audio-Technica Scholarship. Koz is proud to donate to the GRAMMY Camp® (held at and in partnership with the USC Thornton School of Music), creating the Dave Koz/Audio-Technica GRAMMY Camp Scholarship. Mancini selected The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation, thereby creating the Monica Mancini/Audio-Technica Donation for Music Education. Sandoval chose the Young Musicians’ Camp at the University of Miami Frost School of Music, creating the Arturo Sandoval/Audio-Technica Scholarship for the Young Musicians’ Camp. Winans is donating to Juilliard’s Summer Jazz Workshops, creating the BeBe Winans/Audio-Technica Scholarship. Yanofsky has selected the Schulich School of Music and its Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT) at McGill University, creating the Nikki Yanofsky/Audio-Technica Scholarship.

Audio-Technica endorser Abair stated, “Audio-Technica has been helping me achieve my sound for more than 18 years on the road and in the studio. I was honored to play for their 50th Anniversary and even more honored to give back with a scholarship to Berklee’s five-week program. I grew up musically and personally while getting my degree at Berklee. I was encouraged to be an individual there and create my own musical vision. That’s priceless. I couldn’t be happier to pass that gift along to another individual.”

Beverly Tryon, Director, Corporate and Foundation Relations, Berklee College of Music, remarks, “We are very grateful to Mindi Abair for selecting her alma mater to receive this generous scholarship support, and to Audio-Technica for making it possible. EAW® Launches Powercube™ Power and Processing Modules

Powercubes™ are optimized for use with EAW® Line Array Systems, and customers who purchase are eligible for EAW‘s Red Certification® Training Program

Whitinsville, MA, USA, April 18, 2012 –EAW® recently announced the release of their Powercube™ amplifier racks. Designed to maximize the capabilities of EAW’s Line Arrays, each Powercube amplifier rack includes electrical power distribution, 12 channels of amplifier power with integrated digital signal processing and 12-channel input and output.

Powercubes support either three Lab.gruppen® PLM20000Q/SP amplifiers or six Powersoft® K10 DSP+AESOP amplifiers. Amplifiers are shipped separately from the respective manufacturers for user installation on delivery. Powercubes come in 115 volt and 230 volt options, making four options in total. Electrical power distribution panels are separately configured for each of the four possible options.

Powercubes are optimized for use with EAW KF740 line array systems and the largest of the EAW subwoofer systems, but Powercubes can also power and control KF760 or KF730 line array systems.

Also, Powercube purchases entitle the customer to sign up for EAW’s Red Certification® training program. Red Certification status is awarded after a two-day training seminar led by EAW’s Technical Training Manager Bernie Broderick and held at the customer’s offices. Red Certification ensures that all Powercube owners and their staffs are fully trained on all aspects of using the power and processing available through the Powercube.

“With Powercubes and Red Certification, EAW KF740 owners can assure their customers of absolutely consistent performance night after night, in venue after venue,” EAW President Jeff Rocha said. “With a network of Red Certified KF740 rental companies, owners that cross rent and tours that contract PA vendors in different cities or different countries can get this same level of consistency anywhere on the planet.”

Powercubes feature a 24U rack in a shock-absorbing cage to house the power distribution, amplifiers and input and output panels. Electrical power distribution panels include standard, three-phase input connectors and circuit breaker protected outputs configured to support each amplifier compliment.

The ingenious input panels allow for maximum flexibility without switching the connectors. The input panels provide analog connections with loop through, AES connections with parallel loop through and dual Ethernet ports for loop through the amplifier’s digital network. Selectable ground lifts located on each analog input allow it to be linked to the next successive input in series, allowing a single input to drive multiple channels of a multi-amp system.

Likewise, Powercube output panels feature both Neutrik® NL4 connectors and NL8 connectors that combine amplifier outputs. This allows for Powercube to drive KF760s, KF740s or KF730s without ever rewiring the amp rack.

Powercubes include amenities that make them easy to work with under difficult conditions. All models feature a Littlite® gooseneck lamp on the back of each rack for easy patching and configuration in dark areas. They include easily accessible courtesy power outlets appropriate to their voltage to power personal electronics or charge wireless devices. Finally, all models except the Powersoft 230V version include a locking storage drawer.
