Genelec Active Monitors Chosen for Remote Mixing on The X Factor

Music mixer Eric Schilling is using a Genelec 8200 Series Active DSP Monitoring System on the U.S. television premier season of The X Factor to create the 5.1-channel mix of the live music segments for broadcast on the FOX network. The system, comprising Genelec 8250A and 8240A Bi-Amplified DSP Monitors, together with a 7260A subwoofer, was supplied by remote broadcast music production specialists M3 (Music Mix Mobile) and was specified by the show’s production audio mixer, Michael Abbott, a veteran broadcast mixer and sound designer, and the owner of All Ears, Inc.

Joel Singer, co-founder and chief engineer of M3, relates that Abbott was determined to bring the same high level of music mixing and audio quality to The X Factor that he had experienced working with him on other high-profile broadcast events. “Mike, as the A1 on the show, had a vision for what he wanted to do with regard to the music system on The X Factor. He came to us and said that he would like to incorporate the workflow we use on some of these big music award shows, like the GRAMMY® Awards and the Country Music Awards, and what M3 does by building and designing reference-quality 5.1 mixing systems, and develop it for this show. As the system architect, I designed the music system based on the needs of the show as a reliable, fully functioning 5.1 mixing system. It was a good meeting of the minds because we’ve worked with Mike on many, many different projects.”

“My agenda for the sound design of this show was to use components that have previously produced favorable results on other broadcasts, and Genelec has been part of that formula,” confirms Abbott. “I prefer the music mixers to use whatever they are comfortable with, and Eric is very familiar with the tonal response of the Genelec monitors from working with M3 on many other broadcast productions. The result of this team effort has yielded a streamlined workflow with audio quality second-to-none. And from everything I’ve heard, this has made a tremendous difference to our viewers at home.”

Schilling comments, “I have been using the 8200 Series monitors in my studio and for broadcast music mixing since they where released. I always find that the mixes I do with these monitors translate very well to other listening environments outside of my work, which, to me, is of paramount importance.”

Schilling’s temporary studio is set up at CBS Television City in Hollywood, California, where the show is produced. According to Singer, this was the first semi-permanent mixing system installation project for M3, which operates remote music production trucks out of New Jersey and California. “A Gelco trailer is a less-than-ideal space for anything, so we had to overcome some different issues in there,” he acknowledges. “Through the use of some acoustic materials and help from an acoustics company that came in and worked out some of the reflections and other issues, we were able to solve some of the reverberant issues in the room. This provided a comfortable environment for Eric to mix the music on the show.”

The onboard DSP features of the Genelec system, including AutoCal™ automated calibration, which can be centrally controlled by computer using the GLM™ (Genelec Loudspeaker Management™) control network, proved invaluable in the challenging space. “Having the Genelecs, and being able to tune them and look at the rest of the room as a tuned space, helped us out,” reports Singer. “We were really able to use those monitors and adjust them to make the system suitable for what Eric was used to hearing and gave him a reference point so that he could start mixing a show that would translate onto television.”

It’s not surprising that M3 was standardized on Genelec monitor systems for its projects, which can involve similarly challenging remote locations. “We bring fly pack systems into television studios in New York for projects like The Colbert Report, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and a number of other shows where we have to sit in dressing rooms and make the system work,” says Singer. “Genelec is a big, big part of that, because we’re able to take a small set of 8240s to The Colbert Report, where I was able to shoot the room and calibrate the speakers at an earlier point in time, and I can just recall the setup and the Genelecs basically adjust themselves.”

The X Factor, which is franchised globally, made its U.S. television debut on September 21, 2011, and extends through December 22. The show originated in the U.K., where it has frequently been #1 in the ratings over its eight seasons.

Korg Releases Kronos System Version 1.5

— First EXs Expansion Sample Series Library also now available —

MELVILLE, NY, December 1, 2011 — Korg has released System Version 1.5, a free update for their flagship Kronos Music Workstation. Downloadable from Korg’s website, this update offers users access to the first EXs Expansion Sample Series Sound Library, which is also now available.

Kronos Music Workstation System Version 1.5 adds seven new Program Banks with 896 new locations for storing sounds. Version 1.5 also allows users to install additional memory, doubling their available sampling RAM memory to roughly 2 GB, with additional index locations to allow larger sample loads. The convenient connection of USB MIDI controllers – such as Korg’s nanoSERIES2, microKEY and padKONTROL – is also possible with Version 1.5.

Korg is now offering two types of Kronos Sound Libraries. The EXs Expansion Sample Series take advantage of Kronos’ built-in SSD, providing large amounts of PCM data. The KRS Professional Sound Series were created by pro musicians and programmers who are intimately familiar with each of the Kronos sound engines. These libraries contain skillfully crafted programs, combinations, and drum patterns with infectious grooves, all designed to maximize the nine sound engines that power the Kronos.

Slang Musicgroup Looks to Guitar Center Professional for Products and Support as They Upgrade Their Production Studio

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, CA, December 1, 2011 — Vince Lawrence has packed more into three decades in the music business than some achieve in a lifetime, initially as an artist, entrepreneur and innovator who helped introduce house music worldwide, then as a composer, producer and remixer who has come to effortlessly straddle the worlds of music and brand marketing. Lawrence’s Slang Musicgroup recently turned to Guitar Center Professional (GC Pro), the outside sales division of Guitar Center that focuses on the needs of professional users, as they were upgrading the company’s production studio. Chicago-based Dan Scalpone, GC Pro Regional Manager, South Central U.S., was Lawrence’s primary contact on the project.

A studio owner for many years, Lawrence, founder and CEO of Slang Musicgroup and a Chicago resident since birth, has amassed an extensive collection of recording hardware and instruments, but with so much now being produced in the box, the facility’s main computer needed an upgrade. “We wanted to take advantage of some more horsepower in other programs that we were using outside of Pro Tools,” he says. “Since we were making the upgrade we said, what else could we do at the same time, since we were going to take some time off? So we also took the opportunity to isolate some of the noisier equipment.”

Scalpone, another longtime resident of Chicago, spearheaded the project for GC Pro. “I gave Vince all the options, and we sat down with the Avid product specialist and had some good meetings and demonstrations to narrow down what he needed. He wanted to update his Apple OS to Leopard, and naturally he had to upgrade Pro Tools, and he wanted to upgrade his computer. He bought a 12-core Mac and a bunch of hard drives with a Magma chassis. He also got some extra RAM, plus the additional cards for Pro Tools.”

Having access to the fastest computer available and 30 GB of RAM is critical for a studio that runs so many software instruments, not to mention the various applications, such as Logic and Reason, preferred by the team’s composers, according to Lawrence. “We got Vienna Ensemble to use as a bridge so that we could load the other synths into different RAM or even different computers that are elsewhere on our network, so we could maximize our composition palette. We wanted to have as many different things running virtually as possible,” he explains.

Slang Musicgroup works on many different types of projects, including remixing; music for advertising; music licensing for commercials, web, games and other purposes; original music production; artist development; and studio rental to outside engineers and artists. Current remix projects include songs by R. Kelly and Wiz Khalifa, reports Lawrence, also noting that Canadian artist Mira Black, young four-piece Mindless Behavior, and rapper Jim Jones, working with local artist YP, have all visited recently. The Slang Music Group team also wrote the theme for TV’s “Dr. Oz” and works closely with McDonalds, a client for many years, on music-related initiatives.

In addition to the upgrade to Pro Tools 9, and shortly to Pro Tools 10, new software at the studio also includes Native Instruments Komplete & Maschine, Spectrasonics’ Omnisphere and Arturia’s collection of VST instruments. “Plus a few other interesting synth goodies that I’ll keep to myself for the moment,” laughs Lawrence. With the installation of Apple’s Leopard OS, he upgraded the studio’s Waves plug-ins (Mercury bundle) and added the Abbey Road Studios bundle. The processing plug-in collection was further expanded with iZotope’s Stutter Edit, Elysia’s mpressor and the SPL Tube Vitalizer. The upgrade included a single item of outboard processing hardware, an API 2500 stereo compressor.

With producers and musicians all working in the facility’s large control room, noise was an issue, so Lawrence also purchased a 20-unit IsoBox rack from Sound Construction. “Lowering the noise floor while keeping critical gear in the room was one of his objectives,” reports Scalpone.

Slang Music Group is also working with several artists on Atlantic Records, says Lawrence. Somehow the team has also found time to create a five-CD set of loops and one-shot samples, Chicago Fire, for Sony Creative Software’s Acid application. “It’s a good basic toolkit for anybody who wants to make good sounding house music and electro,” he says.

There is no denying that Slang Music Group is busy: “Our posted hours are 9 a.m. to 3 a.m. Not that I’m here for all of them,” Lawrence acknowledges, “but we’re willing to book a session between those hours. We really want to help out as much as we can, so there’s a pile of stuff going on around here.”

Former Bedroom Hatches World Class Control Room at The Nest

— Producer/Engineer Ryan McFadden transforms an unused bedroom into a stunning personal mix facility with the help of Carl Tatz Design and The PhantomFocus™ System —

Nashville, TN: “What’s really crazy is that, in this little bedroom studio, I now have one of the best monitoring systems in the world – it’s nuts. I have trouble believing it myself until every time I sit down in front of it – it hits me all over again,” waxes The Nest studio owner Ryan McFadden about his new PhantomFocus™ System (PFS).

“It’s a funny thing,” explains studio designer, Carl Tatz, principal of Carl Tatz Design LLC (CTD), “and I think it has to do with the fact that our aural memory is our shortest, but the same thing happens to me and that is that every time I sit down and listen to one of my systems it’s like I have forgotten how incredible it is. I have a repetition of the wow experience. This is probably why it is so difficult to explain in words to someone about how amazing the PFS performs without it sounding like hyperbole – you just have to experience it for yourself.”

Tired of suffering with inaccurate mixes, wasted time and loss of bookings in his bedroom control room, Nashville engineer/producer Ryan McFadden called on personal studio designer guru Carl Tatz to orchestrate a dramatic transformation from a bedroom of acoustic squalor into a control room of acoustic nirvana with CTD’s proprietary acoustic modules and the acclaimed PhantomFocus System monitor tuning protocol.

McFadden had a tight budget to work with but knew that the PhantomFocus System had to be the centerpiece based on the expert advice of teachers and friends, articles he read and ultimately his own PFS demo experience. What really helped his cost was the fact that he was not concerned about isolating the control room from the rest of the house and only required some extra glass in one window to the outside. This way the budget could be used primarily for the CTD acoustic modules and some custom application treatments along with the PFS.

McFadden goes on to say that since completing his CTD mix room, mixes happen much more quickly and are far more enjoyable, and his bookings have greatly increased. He notes that it is the best professional decision he has made.

NATICK, MA, November 17, 2011 — Danny McDonald, owner and co-owner of numerous bars, pubs and restaurants in Lower Manhattan, has opened a new establishment, The Growler Bites and Brews, that features a sound system comprising Genelec 8030A Bi-Amplified Monitors. McDonald has relied on the Genelec brand since installing his first system in 2000, and he is currently planning another large installation of the monitor speakers at New York’s historic Pier A.

The Growler Bites and Brews bar and restaurant is located in the Financial District on Stone Street, which is often referred to as Lower Manhattan’s restaurant row and is the location of several of McDonald’s other establishments. The new eatery is named after the traditional half-gallon jugs used to transport beer and sports a decidedly doggy theme, even offering a corral for its four-legged patrons while their owners chow down on organic hotdogs, microbrews and other fare. The Genelec speakers for this newest install were purchased from Guitar Center.

McDonald initially installed Genelec 1030A speakers eleven years ago at Puck Fair, an Irish pub on Lafayette Street. “There are 36 1030A’s there,” he reports, noting that he installed additional Genelec speakers at his oldest bar, Swift, at around the same time. “Then I built Ulysses Folk House in 2003; there are probably 40 in that spot, including the subs and speakers that we’ve added since. Then we put them in Harry’s Café and Harry’s Steak at One Hanover Square. Those are effectively two restaurants; there are 48 Genelec speakers in there. Next we built Gold Street – which is now called Harry’s Italian – in the Two Gold Street building, and put 40-odd in there.” Additional Genelec monitors are installed at the Vintry Wine & Whiskey bar, also on Stone Street, and the Bathtub Gin Speakeasy at 18th Street and Ninth Avenue.

For smaller rooms, such as the Vintry bar, a smaller speaker may be appropriate, he comments. “You can change the scale of the Genelec speakers to fit the restaurant environment, of course, and the sound will still be consistent. But I generally go with the medium range, the 8030A or the older 1030A, which is what I have in a lot of the places. They have punch and volume, and tremendous headroom. I always try and make it so that a customer is never further than eight feet from a Genelec speaker.”

McDonald’s next project will be the 30,000-plus-square-foot Pier A complex, a multi-million-dollar renovation project that will house a mix of casual and fine dining restaurants. “We’ll be using Genelecs there, too,” he says.

At some of the locations, in addition to handling background music, the Genelec monitors supplement a PA system on the nights that live bands are featured, and are also used during poetry readings and book launches. “Talk about surround sound!” says McDonald. “When you have that many speakers, you immerse the audience.”

As McDonald observes, the aggressive mid-range of many PA-type speakers forces people to talk louder, which can lead to the staff raising the music levels, and a vicious circle can set in. “I grew up bartending in the city of New York and I was perplexed by why places were using PA systems that were designed to overcome conversation. In a friendly bar or restaurant the last thing you want to feel is that aggression, and these Genelec studio monitors completely overcome that. It makes for a much more peaceful spot. So I was looking for systems that almost promoted conversation. I came up with a term ten years ago – I call it ‘choreographed conversation.’ These Genelecs have been able to promote that.”

Indeed, because Genelec monitors are self-powered, McDonald can quickly and easily tailor the environment in each establishment. “I had an elderly couple in the other day for a lobster dinner. They thought they were in a busy environment that they thought was too loud. I just turned off the Genelec at their table, and they decided to hang out. When you’re managing a room that’s a great thing to be able to do.”

As for maintenance, he continues, “It’s very, very easy when you can just Allen-key a speaker down off an omni-mount, unplug the XLR and, if you have speakers on standby, which I always do, correct a problem – which happens very rarely. I’ve got many speakers that are still operating ten years later, and that’s ten years of having never been turned off. It just amazes me.”

As it turns out, McDonald’s pioneering use of Genelec speakers in Manhattan’s eating and drinking establishments started something of a trend. “I sing Genelec’s praises all over the place. In fact, I know that there have been an awful lot of Genelecs sold on account of the fact that they’re in my places – they’re in half the other Irish pubs as well!”
