StrandVision Digital Signage Offers Schools Innovative Ways to Reach Students and the Community

A white paper explains how schools can meld cable TV networks with today’s technologies…

MENOMONIE, Wis. – July 15, 2014 – StrandVision Digital Signage today announced innovative ways for schools to revitalize existing cable television infrastructures or install a new digital signage network to deliver electronic signage content to classrooms, cafeterias and other school locations, as well as over Internet, Wi-Fi and other distribution networks.

Outlined in a paper entitled “Put Your Old Cable TV Network to Work Delivering 21st Century Digital Signage Communications” Mike Strand, StrandVision founder & CEO, discusses how to extend digital signage over the Web to students’ and parents’ home and work computers, mobile devices and other alternative distribution options.

The paper reviews how some schools utilize their electronic signage and further describes how digital signage networks with DVD playback capabilities can be used to showcase student projects and productions, and replay sporting and social events. It also outlines how to further engage students using embedded Quick Response (QR) codes to offer trivia contests and other interactive activities for their mobile phones.

“Every day, digital signage becomes more and more of an integrated tool that can add to a school’s communications mix to students, faculty and parents,” commented Strand. “We offer digital signage solutions that make it easy to enhance communications using many mediums, which encourage administrators to explore the boundaries of communications and to think about how students, faculty, parents and the community-at-large like to get their information. Then they can construct an effective delivery system that reaches everyone with up-to-the-minute communications.”

StrandVision Digital Signage Enhances Viewers’ Experiences with Signage Content Trivia Facts and Questions

Extends pre-packaged digital signage content offerings that include news, weather, background music…

MENOMONIE, Wis. – June 25, 2014 – StrandVision Digital Signage today announced that it is adding a new, no-cost, trivia library to its electronic signage offerings. The trivia is organized by topics, such as sports, food, animals, plants, hobbies – scores of different categories – and randomly presented as either “factoid” statements and/or trivia questions.

“We’re offering hundreds of prepared trivia questions and factoids to help make the wait worthwhile for viewers of our customers’ StrandVision Digital Signage networks,” commented Mike Strand, StrandVision founder and CEO. “These little mind game diversions engage viewers, draw the StrandVision Digital Signage presentations into conversations of waiting customers or employees and enhance overall message delivery.”

Factoid or Trivia

StrandVision customers can add trivia pages to their electronic signage mix with a few clicks. Administrators simply select the presentation format and topics to display and StrandVision cloud servers handle the rest. The trivia is presented as either a statement or as a multiple choice question that offers the answers and then, every few seconds, removes one of the incorrect answers until only the correct response is ultimately displayed. The trivia pages are interspersed with the regular signage content according to an administrator-defined frequency. Topics and formats can easily be added or changed at any time.

*The correct answer is C.

This free digital signage trivia feature joins a number of StrandVision-provided content streams that add to the digital signage viewing experience. Other content streams include: background music, famous artwork, news and weather with radar, as well as industry-specific feeds, such as banking videos. StrandVision Digital Signage also accepts and processes customer-specified Web pages and RSS feeds to offer virtually unlimited information sources.

“We’re having fun with this one by learning lots of new random things to babble about at the retirement home. We’re sure that our subscribers and their viewers will enjoy it too – although they stand the risk of being the know-it-all at cocktail parties,” joked Strand.

The no-cost trivia pages are available immediately to StrandVision subscribers. The feature has been added as a new page type in the “Modify Pages” section of their Content Management System (CMS) portal.

StrandVision Digital Signage Extends its Electronic Digital Media Player to Screensavers and Websites

Electronic signage content can be quickly added to Internet and intranet websites as either a home page or as a dynamic, constantly-updated embedded frame…

MENOMONIE, Wis. – June 10, 2014 – StrandVision Digital Signage today announced four display options that extend its electronic signage to companies’ and organizations’ Web and internal computer networks, including tablet and cell phone screens.

Optimized for both employee and external communication, the Web extensions take advantage of StrandVision’s cloud service to enable StrandVision Digital Signage customers to extend their electronic signage programming to additional digital media outlets.

Using simple copy and paste applets, administrators can insert dynamic up-to-the-minute information in websites, emails or social media sites without having to constantly load new Web pages. Subscribers can show the same text, images, weather and news that run on their regular StrandVision Digital Signage displays in their corporate lobbies or employee break rooms, or independently show a completely different set of pages over the Web.

Each of these options facilitates employee communication and business marketing messaging. They bring important messaging directly to employees’ offices and mobile systems – even reaching associates who seldom or never visit office locations. The Web extensions can also reach customers and prospects with timely, easily updated messaging.

“These features are great ways to increase communication timeliness, consistency and efficiency both internally and with external audiences,” said Mike Strand, StrandVision founder and CEO. “We recognize that digital signage is an important business marketing component in our subscribers’ communications mix, which can be extended cost-effectively – free, actually – beyond their traditional physical signage network. We are sure that these add-ons will be attractive to our subscribers.”

The extensions include:

Home Page Display – The Home Page applet allows StrandVision signage to be displayed on all designated computers or cell phones as the default home page or as a selectable bookmark or favorite based on administrator or end-user preference. The Home Page option works with any Web browser that supports Adobe flash.

Embedded Web Frame – The Web frame is another administrator-selectable applet that places the streaming StrandVision Digital Signage directly into an internal or public webpage, or even embedded into most social media walls. The administrator simply copies and pastes the link from StrandVision and it is automatically inserted into a frame on the website. The Web pages then display all of the same information that is shown on the digital signage display screens or the separate custom program in real-time.

Screen Saver – Another administrator selection, the applet does just what it says – it enables idle individual computer screens to default to the digital signage page display whenever the screen saver becomes active.

Share Electronically – This feature allows administrators to instantly share a link to the streaming signage with anyone via email, chat, text message or other instant messaging medium.

These features join StrandVision’s other free digital signage integration tools. including the ability to present Quick Response (QR) codes on digital signage displays that can be scanned to take viewers to informational or promotional websites; and the ability to collect, format and display frequently updated Web pages, such as transportation schedules and traffic, on StrandVision Digital Signage displays.

StrandVision subscribers simply select any or all of these electronic signage display options on their StrandVision portal Content Management System (CMS). Administrators can incorporate, email or text them to IT, network or Web administrators, or end users, as appropriate.

StrandVision Digital Signage Enhances the Live Web Page Capabilities of its Electronic Signage

Systems automatically polls, formats, presents and updates Web Pages directly from the Internet…

MENOMONIE, Wis. – May 28, 2014 – StrandVision Digital Signage today announced that it is adding a new way to source material for its electronic signage customers. It has developed a method to capture Web page content from the Internet and intranets, automatically format it to electronic signage customer settings and merge it into the digital media player presentations.

This capability offers many benefits for StrandVision customers. Applications include adding dynamic information that is becoming more widely available over the Web directly into StrandVision Digital Signage such as near-real-time bus schedules and expected arrival times and traffic maps, for display in public areas and for employee communications.

How It Works

The StrandVision cloud-based digital signage service Web Page facility captures Web pages, immediately converts them to images for display on StrandVision’s cloud server and distributes them to the local media players as needed. The system pre-loads and captures the Web page so that the content displays immediately rather than waiting for information to be gathered from the source Web site. User-specified delays can be configured to ensure that Web sites are fully loaded in the background before they are captured. The pages are captured and formatted to match the digital media player display orientation. The administrator console can also securely store log-in information so password-protected sites can be included as sources. Administrators can choose to offset portions of the pages to better utilize the screen region resources and highlight certain sections.

The new Web Page capability also takes advantage of the capabilities of many corporate and enterprise systems, as well as other specific business applications, which typically can generate Web page output. With this new enhancement, the StrandVision system can take charts, graphs or other details from this standard business system data output and capture it for display on its digital signage player. This opens a world of possibilities for Human Resources, operations, production, finance, safety and other corporate departments.

“The enhanced Web Page display is another free digital signage capability that makes StrandVision Digital Signage a more capable, more flexible and more effective business marketing and employee communication tool for our customers,” commented Mike Strand, StrandVision founder and CEO. “There are an untold number of applications, including the obvious real-time transportation and traffic reports, and we’re looking forward to seeing the creative ways that our signage subscribers use this tool to meet their individual communication needs.”

The Web Page capability complements StrandVision’s previously available streaming weather and radar displays and its local and national new services. It also provides another option to StrandVision’s ability to capture and convert RSS feeds and its extensive database-to-digital signage conversion capabilities.

The no-cost Web Page add-on capability is available immediately to StrandVision subscribers. It has been added as a new page type in the “Modify Pages” section of their Content Management System (CMS) portal. Web Page refresh rates of less than 15 minutes require a StrandVision Linux digital media player.

StrandVision Digital Signage Introduces Automatic DVD/Looping Video Playback for Digital Media Players

An additional way for customers to use their digital sign networks for advertising/promotion, employee training and other video applications…

MENOMONIE, Wis. – May 13, 2014 – StrandVision Digital Signage today introduced a new, integrated DVD and USB thumb drive video and digital media content playback capability for its electronic signage networks using StrandVision Linux digital signage players. DVD and local video playback enables subscribers to mix DVD or flash drive-sourced local programming on demand with StrandVision’s cloud-based digital signage service.

This capability is attractive to hoteliers (especially convention hotels) who have their digital signage connected to their in-room cable network head ends. They can rent out the video playback capability for cable and public area viewing for special promotions ranging from short advertisements to longer promotional videos. It is also an efficient way to use an existing employee digital signage network for training and broadcasts of company-wide announcements. This new free digital signage service supplements StrandVision’s cloud-based video services that are available with many of its subscription packages.

Simple set up/operation

StrandVision remotely installs the free digital signage software add-on upon request to enable StrandVision’s Linux digital media player to automatically suspend normal digital signage playback when the external video is playing and automatically resume the normal digital signage content playback upon completion. After the remote install, subscribers simply connect their own external flash drive or DVD drive to the player via the USB input.

“This is a powerful and profitable add-on to many of our customers’ electronic signage networks,” said Mike Strand, StrandVision founder and CEO. “Several of our hospitality, health care and manufacturing customers are connecting DVD drives to their players so they are ready to stream paid promotions to public areas and feed the cable head ends. They’re finding it especially useful for conventions. We anticipate equal enthusiasm from our employee communications customers and we expect uses that we haven’t even thought of in many of the other industries we work with.”

The DVD playback capability is available immediately with no additional subscription or installation charge. Subscribers must have a StrandVision Linux digital media player, provide their own external DVD or flash drive and contact StrandVision for installation of the interface software.

StrandVision Enhances Visitor/Employee Communication with People Pages that Feature Special Dates and Accomplishments

People pages can be automatically built from existing Human Resource and corporate databases…

MENOMONIE, Wis. – April 23, 2014 – StrandVision Digital Signage now offers custom “People” electronic signage pages to make it easy for companies and organizations to automatically call up individuals or groups in order to feature employees’ and members’ birthdays, anniversaries and other events or accomplishments. The free People page can be selected as a page type and entered directly into StrandVision’s Content Management System (CMS) in the cloud or imported from corporate databases.

Easy to set up

The People storage and display capability is easy to manage. Human Resource administrators or other authorized staff are able to add, modify and remove people from the secure database manually with an entry form for each record or they can automatically fill in the information from another data source such as a corporate payroll system.

The form includes employee name, ID, email, location and other identifying information as well as fields for birthday, anniversary and departure dates and a photo. Photos can also be bulk uploaded where the system matches the image file name to employee IDs or names of the appropriate record. The system also includes several configurable free-form fields that can include information on awards and recognition, hobbies, sports, favorite books and movies – any ad hoc information.

The automation feature enables administrators to access information directly from Human Resource and other corporate databases. The formatted data can be uploaded directly to the StrandVision People list. StrandVision also offers consulting and programming services for customized connections to automatically retrieve changes from corporate systems. Once in the secure StrandVision database, the information can also be easily added to internal company websites for free as a website plug-in module.

Easy to use

Administrators can automatically display selected people by adding a People page type and setting the various selection criteria. Administrators simply select the office location, the driving event – birthday, anniversary, etc., and the selection period – day, week, month, etc. Administrators can use the StrandVision People list to drive multiple People pages – separate birthday and anniversary listings, for instance. The display pages are pre-formatted with animated backgrounds that can feature individual employees or scroll all selected people as a list.

“These new People pages are specifically designed to make employee communication fast, easy and personal by automatically featuring employees or organization members and their accomplishments based on today’s date,” said Mike Strand, StrandVision founder and CEO. “They take advantage of existing employee/member photos and information and provides a great communications/motivational addition to our subscribers’ digital signage networks for no additional cost.”

StrandVision’s new People pages feature is available immediately. Subscribers simply log into their StrandVision accounts, visit the Modify Pages section and select the People Page template to be guided through the set up.

Royal Credit Union Puts StrandVision Digital Signage at the Center of its Member Communications

Early adopter of StrandVision’s new Linux Digital Media Player…

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Feb. 4, 2014 – Royal Credit Union is further expanding its already extensive StrandVision Digital Signage network with additional branch and drive-up locations. It will be using StrandVision’s recently introduced R360 Linux digital media player to drive new digital signage installations.

RCU, a StrandVision customer since 2004, has StrandVision electronic signage in 15 of its lobbies and has integrated it directly into drive-up teller operations at eight locations in Minnesota and Wisconsin. It will add eight more lobbies and additional drive-ups in 2014.

RCU is continuing to expand its relationship with StrandVision based on its positive experience over the years. “The StrandVision Digital Signage system works well,” commented Bruce Lubinski, RCU network administrator and server engineer. “It’s very stable and quite frankly, it just works. New installations will come right up and it has a nice client interface that makes it easy. We’ve also been quite happy with Mike Strand and his company. He’ll chat with you and is willing to consult for free.”

RCU’s lobby displays generally include a single 50” monitor per lobby and speakers that are placed to cover the waiting customer queue without disrupting staff or teller conversations. The lobby programming includes StrandVision-provided content like weather, plus personalized text and graphics pages, along with RCU’s televisions ads.

The branch locations with drive-up teller services have a separate, non-audio StrandVision Digital Signage network to serve customers. The drive-up signage includes all of the same content except TV ads that require audio. The signage is directly integrated into RCU’s Hamilton Air drive-up kiosks and is displayed on the drive-up’s teller communication monitor. The system screen shows the teller whenever he/she activates the audio/video channel, and displays the digital signage pages while the transaction is being completed and when the drive-up is idle between transactions.

StrandVision Provides a New Approach

The new installations being rolled out in 2014 will be the first to take advantage of StrandVision’s new R360 Linux point-of-display digital media players. This upgrade will simplify installation and administration by eliminating Windows update issues and enabling closer integration with StrandVision’s cloud servers to virtually eliminate maintenance issues.

During installation the StrandVision point-of-display digital media players automatically connect to a StrandVision digital signage host server in the cloud, log in using the preset username and password, initialize the connection and begin transmitting RCU’s digital signage content in seconds.

During operation the StrandVision media player reduces bandwidth usage and improves stability by self-correcting most issues and automatically sending system performance updates and alerts to StrandVision and RCU’s digital signage system administrators. The Linux digital media players can also operate in standalone mode using cached digital signage content pages if there is a prolonged break in Internet communications.

“We’re pleased that RCU continues to expand and to take full advantage of StrandVision’s ever-improving, easy-to-implement, easy-to-use cloud-based digital signage network,” said Mike Strand, StrandVision founder and CEO. “We’ve worked together over the past ten years to expand and upgrade their StrandVision Digital Signage System and we’re honored to be such an important part of their member communication program for all these years.”

StrandVision Digital Signage Debuts Leasing

Partners with Advantage Leasing…

MENOMONIE, Wis. – Jan. 15, 2014 – StrandVision Digital Signage today announced that it has partnered with Advantage Leasing Corporation of Brookfield, Wis. to provide leasing to its customers for its digital signage networks, as well as other software, equipment and services.

“We are extremely pleased to be able to offer the additional flexibility that electronic signage leasing provides to our customers,” commented Mike Strand, StrandVision founder and CEO. “Leasing enables them to get the digital signage network that they want and need easily and quickly. We are excited to be working with Advantage, a first-class leasing company with deep equipment leasing experience and a sterling reputation for integrity and customer service.”

The equipment leasing arrangement allows StrandVision direct and reseller channel customers to execute a single financial agreement directly with Advantage for all of their StrandVision purchases, including screens, digital media players, PC-2-TV.net video distribution and the electronic sign subscription portion of the expense. Customers will continue to work directly with StrandVision and/or their local reseller on the technical aspects of the installation.

StrandVision resellers benefit by being able to offer their customers the services of a national leasing company with expertise in digital signage and business-to-business technology and equipment. Leasing enables resellers to make incremental sales, get paid up front and concentrate on selling and servicing their customers while leaving the financial details to others. Mike Strand penned an article on leasing for Vertical Systems Reseller’s online publication, VSR Online, in 2009 that outlines the benefits of leasing for resellers. It is located at: http://www.strandvision.net/leasing_technology_like_car_companies.html.

“We’re pleased to add StrandVision to our portfolio of vendor partners,” said Deanne Schneider, Sales Executive, Advantage. “We’re looking forward to supporting StrandVision’s digital signage solutions and know that by using our tailor-made financial tools we’ll open doors for StrandVision and its reseller partners while enabling customers to cost effectively install more robust and complete systems that better serve their needs.”
