Marshall Jefferson Adds A Prism Sound Lyra To His Kit List

Chicago House legend Marshall Jefferson has invested in a Prism Sound Lyra audio interface so that he can access Prism Sound’s renowned audio quality while he is on the road.

Sometimes known as the father of House music, Marshall Jefferson has produced numerous influential artists as well as recording solo and collaborative material under various names including Virgo, Jungle Wonz, Truth and On The House. His iconic anthem Move Your Body was included on the soundtrack for the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and also appeared on the soundtrack to Michael Winterbottom’s film 24 Hour Party People.

“I already have a Prism Sound Orpheus FireWire Interface, which I love because it sounds so good,” Jefferson says. “Alongside my production work, I also DJ in various countries and when I heard about the new Lyra range I realised this was exactly what I needed for those occasions when I’m travelling. It’s very easy to use – literally plug and play – and it is so compact that it fits neatly into my laptop bag. With Lyra, I have all the Prism Sound audio quality that I’m used to in a very portable format.”

Prism Sound’s Lyra allows music recording professionals to access the power and sophistication of the Orpheus audio path and clock circuitry, but in a smaller package and at a much improved price point. There are currently two variants in the range – the Lyra 1, which has two analogue input channels (one for instrument/line and one for mic/line) and two DA output channels, and the Lyra 2, which has two AD input channels with switchable microphone, instrument or line input modes and four DA output channels. Both versions offer digital volume control, a low latency ‘console-quality’ digital mixer for foldback monitoring and optical SPDIF capability.

Jefferson has opted for a Lyra 2 and when he’s not travelling he uses it in conjunction with his Orpheus in his studio in Manchester. In recent months he has worked on project for Dave Lee, Lenny Fontana, House of Virus, Robert Owens, DJ Pierre, Donna Hidalgo and K-Klass.

“I’m doing a lot of mixing and mastering work at the moment and that’s keeping me busy,” he says. “All of my mastering projects go through my Prism Sound Orpheus and I’m constantly being asked what interface I’m using because people love the sound so much. Now I have the same sound quality when I’m on the road – and I can also use my Lyra 2 as a back-up in the studio if I want to master onto a different computer.”

DPA Diversifies Its Highly Directional Microphone Palette

Broadcasters and film makers who are searching for a high quality boom microphone capable of capturing audio in challenging locations need to look no further than DPA Microphones’ IBC 2013 booth (8:D76).

On show for the first time at IBC is the new DPA MMC4018 – a modular supercardioid condenser capsule that is an integral part of the company’s d:dicate™ Recording Microphone range. Thanks to its directional pattern, the MMC4018 has an extremely controlled off-axis response and very uniform directional shape (independent of frequency), thus ensuring exceptionally smooth and controlled sound.

Unlike the DPA d:dicate 4017 Shotgun, which includes an interference tube and is therefore more directional at the sides, this new variant offers more consistent rear rejection making it an interesting alternative to a conventional shotgun. While the MMC4017 is exceedingly directional, especially at higher frequencies, the sleek and compact MMC4018 focuses on low noise and high sensitivity, making it more suited to long-distance voice capture.

The DPA MMC4018 is the counterpart to the MMC4018V capsule, which is used in DPA’s popular d:facto™ Vocal Microphone. This means it offers extremely good isolation and feedback rejection, making it ideally suited to applications where clarity and audio quality are critical.

Christian Poulsen, CEO of DPA Microphones, says: “Our new MMC4018 supercardioid condenser capsule expands the flexibility of DPA’s d:dicate range by offering the broadcast, film and music recording industries the perfect microphone for long-distance boom miking, spot miking in orchestras, foley and speech recording. Due to its shorter length, it is very easy to boom in low-ceilinged rooms or to mount in challenging film recording sets such as the inside of cars.”

The modular nature of DPA’s d:dicate Recording Microphone range has enabled the company to expand its remit by entering the installation market. To this end it has introduced new desktop and podium microphones that give AV installers and conference organisers the clear, transparent and precise sound they demand.

DPA’s new MMC4018 capsule is the standard recommendation for the d:dicate podium microphone. By combining the capsule with different active booms and cables, installers can specify the exact microphone for their needs. For example, an MMC4018 capsule combined with an MMP-C compact pre-amp makes an ideal desktop microphone, while the same capsule combined with an MMP-E modular active cable is perfect for applications where the microphone needs to be hung from the ceiling because the preamp only adds 12mm to the capsule – and thanks to its integrated cable it is very inconspicuous.

“Given the flexibility of our d:dicate range, creating a microphone for the installation and conference markets was an obvious step,” Christian Poulsen adds. “We already had the high-end capsule and pre-amplifier technology needed to fulfil the brief, so all we had to do was employ some ingenious mechanical solutions. By doing this, we have been able to adapt our boom and cable technology so that we can deliver installation solutions for a wide variety of applications. Whether this is for a podium, a desk top, a stage stand or even suspended from the ceiling, we have it covered with visually elegant and sonically superior products that boast all the robustness inherent in DPA’s ingenious engineering techniques.”

For more information about DPA’s microphone range, please visit DPA’s IBC stand – Hall 8, D76. Visitors to the booth will also have the opportunity to win a DPA microphone by having their badge scanned and entering a free draw, which will be drawn each day at five pm throughout the show.

DPA Ensures That ‘Sugar Man’ Is Heard Loud and Clear

US singer-songwriter Sixto Rodriguez, the subject of the Oscar Award-winning documentary Searching For Sugar Man, has switched to a DPA d:facto™ Vocal Microphone to ensure that his audiences hear every nuance of his complex voice.

Producer and Front of House engineer Russ Miller, who has been working with Rodriguez since he started his current tour in November 2012, says the DPA d:facto vocal microphone has proved ‘absolutely invaluable’.

“It is an incredible microphone that is perfect for Rodriguez’ voice,” Miller says. “It has worked brilliantly at every venue we have visited, including Glastonbury, and frankly I couldn’t have got through this tour without it.”

Now 71 years old, Sixto Rodriguez has been called ‘the greatest 1970′s music icon that never was’. The Mexican-American folk singer was hailed as the new Bob Dylan when he was first discovered in Detroit, Michigan, in the late 1960s. But after his first two albums, Cold Fact and Coming to Reality, were commercial flops he was dropped by his record label and disappeared. Although he was actually making a living as a manual labourer, there were rumours that Rodriguez had dramatically killed himself on stage. What he didn’t realise, however, was that a bootleg copy of Cold Fact had made its way to South Africa where it had become a huge success and had won him thousands of fans who saw his music as the unofficial soundtrack to youth protests against apartheid.

In the 1990s, determined South African fans managed to track him down and this led to a revival of his musical career. Further recognition came with the release of the Searching for Sugar Man documentary, which won an Academy Award in 2012.

For Russ Miller, capturing Rodriguez’ voice is a challenge because he sings very quietly.

“As a singer-songwriter in the tradition of artists like Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, it is really important that audiences can hear every word of every lyric Rodriguez sings,” Russ Miller explains. “However, when he’s accompanied by a powerful, up tempo band, it can be difficult to keep his vocal loud and clear. This isn’t a unique problem, but it was one I wanted to solve before we tackled some of the bigger venues on his tour, so I started casting around for a better microphone for him.”

After a conversation with live sound engineer Rik Dowding, who recently invested in DPA d:facto Vocal Microphones for The xx, Miller approached DPA’s UK distributor Sound Network, through Tour Supply Ltd, and asked if he could demo one.

“I’d also heard really great things about this microphone from Richard Nowell at RNSS who has been using them with various Jazz artists, so I thought it might work for Rodrigues,” Miller says. “The issue was actually demoing it because Rodrigues isn’t the sort of artist who will go into a studio and do an A/B comparison test. In fact, he doesn’t really do rehearsals – he just arrives at a gig and it’s ‘go’ time – there’s no real sound check or set list and he could start with any song. The first time we got to try out the d:facto was at La Zenith in Paris in front of a live audience of 7,500.”

Once Rodriguez began using the DPA d:facto Vocal Microphone, Russ Miller certainly noticed a difference.

“It was amazing,” he says. “The microphone is incredibly detailed in the upper mids, and as a result I was able to attenuate cymbal spill with just a low pass filter because his voice cut through really well, without having to add any air. I was also impressed with how well the microphone took EQ-ing. It was obvious to me that this was the right mic for Rodriguez so we immediately specified it for the rest of his live shows.”

Since his appearance at Glastonbury, Rodriguez has performed in various European cities including Copenhagen and Stockholm, and at another festival in the UK.

“We’ve used the DPA d:facto Vocal Microphone throughout and it hasn’t let us down,” Russ Miller adds. “I’m so relieved that we have finally found the right microphone for his voice as it has improved the sound of his concerts, as well as making my job as a live sound engineer much easier!”

Danish Rockers D-A-D Get Down and Dirty With DPA

Rune Slot, live sound engineer for Danish rock band D-A-D, has turned to DPA Microphones to deliver the loud, punchy sound for which the band is famous.

“I experimented with a number of different condenser microphones before settling for DPA,” Rune Slot says. “They are fantastic – awesome – and it’s really great to have high end microphones supplying the inputs to the desk.”

Slot has been on tour with D-A-D for most of this year, taking in countries such as China and the US as well as plenty of places in Europe.

He says: “D-A-D is incredibly loud so for this tour I wanted to use high end microphones that could really capture the band’s noise and energy. The DPA microphones we have chosen are great and do the job perfectly.”

Originally known as Disneyland After Dark, D-A-D formed in the early 1980s and, apart from one change when Laust Sonne replaced former drummer Peter Lundholm Jensen, it has retained its original line-up. Its international breakthrough came in 1989 when it signed to Warner Bros in the USA. At that point the band was forced to change its name to D-A-D to avoid an impending lawsuit from the Walt Disney Company.

To mic Laust Sonne’s snare drum, Slot is using a combination of a DPA d:dicate™ 2011C Twin Diaphragm Cardioid microphones and DPA d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones, with the former positioned above the snare and the latter below it. d:vote 4099 Instrument Microphones are also used to mike the toms, high hat and cymbals, with reinforcement provided by a DPA d:dicate 4011 Compact Cardioid Microphone positioned underneath the cymbals.

“It’s not jazz – it’s very Rock and Roll,” Slot says. “I’ve also used DPA 2011C microphones to pick up Jacob Binzer’s lead guitar. He has two cabinets that give a great combination of clean and dirty sound so I’ve positioned 2011C mics about 12cm from each of the speakers where they work brilliantly.”

Vocals are another area where DPA has come up trumps. Lead singer Jesper Binzer is using a Wisycom wireless system and Slot has equipped this with a DPA d:facto™ Vocal Microphone capsule.

“The mic helps me to stay in control without having to go primal,” Jesper Binzer says, while Slot adds: “It is a really great sounding capsule that truly grasps all the spit and energy of Jesper’s performance. Even when he sings from the side, it grabs the sound and pulls it into the mix.”

Slot adds that with a loud band like D-A-D, lead vocals need to be clearly heard in the mix and initially he thought this might not be feasible with a condenser microphone capsule.

“I didn’t need to worry because the DPA d:facto Vocal Microphone capsule is of such good quality that it is more than capable of giving me the sound I want,” he says. “I was really surprised when I tried it for the first time because, usually with condenser microphones, you get feedback issues, especially in the high frequency range. However with the d:facto this just wasn’t a problem. It does what it is supposed to do and there is very little of bleed from the rest of the band, even though the band plays insanely loud.”

Slot is also using d:facto Vocal Microphones for backing vocals, with Jacob Binzer, Stig Pedersen and Laust Sonne all singing into wired versions of the d:facto.

“These microphones are really good at isolating the vocals and they are also happy to take plenty of punishment,” he adds. “The guys do like to ‘eat’ their mics, but the d:facto Vocal Microphones cope with that brilliantly and still deliver a very punchy sound.”

DPA Microphones At The Fortune Global Forum 2013

DPA Microphones played a significant part in the success of this year’s Fortune Global Forum, which was held in June in Chengdu, China.

CEOs from some of the world’s largest multinational companies gathered in Chengdu for the three day event, which was also attended by China’s Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli and other Chinese dignitaries. The Forum culminated in a Gala Dinner during which guests were entertained by musical performances by 30 guzheng players, opera singers, choral and pop singers, and a piano performance by Lang Lang, China’s premier classical pianist.

Prior to the event, Fortune’s Audio Designer Ron Lorman contacted Ken Kimura at DPA’s APAC office in Hong Kong and requested his help in sourcing microphones for the Gala Dinner.

“I have been using DPA d:fine™ Headset Microphones for some time and was aware of the quality of DPA’s product range,” Lorman says. “This event was of huge importance and it was vital that I delivered exceptional audio quality, therefore DPA was the obvious first port of call when it came to sourcing the right microphones.”

With help from Ken Kimura and Pike Xin, Product Manager at DPA’s Chinese distributor Digital Media Technology, Lorman was able to access exactly what he needed. At the Gala Dinner he had 100 inputs to deal with and all of the primary inputs were miked with DPA.

“During the conference sessions, I used assorted mics including my own stock of DPA d:fine Headset Microphones for the various presenters. The d:fines work exceptionally well because they deliver excellent intelligibility and are very comfortable for the presenters to wear,” Lorman says. “The Gala Dinner, however, presented a number of interesting microphone challenges, and this was where the advice and help I received from Ken and Pike was invaluable.”

Lorman’s main goals were miking multiple diverse artists, with rapid set changes, including guzheng players, percussion ensemble, lead vocals, choir, flutes, harps and a string quintet. He also had to ensure an elegant sound from Lang Lang’s Steinway piano.

“I had very little prior information about the guzheng players, so I wasn’t sure if I needed to mic every instrument – or indeed where it would be best to mount the microphones,” he says. “In the end we used DPA d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones that we placed underneath the instruments, mounted to the stands with universal clips. They were able to capture the sound without getting in the way of the performance. The various d:vote 4099 mounting systems proved to be extremely flexible and well thought out.”

For Lang Lang’s piano, Lorman used DPA’s d:vote 4099P Stereo Microphone System. This dedicated system includes a pair of sensitivity selected d:vote 4099 supercardioid mics on goosenecks with magnetic mounts, which is designed to capture true acoustic piano sound in a live setting. With this system, Lorman was able to easily achieve a clean and transparent stereo sound.

DPA d:vote 4099 Instrument Microphones and d:facto Vocal Microphones were also used to mic a traditional Chinese ensemble with flute, harps, ziao and zhnogruan as well as orchestral musicians playing violins, violas, cello and bass, that played to guests during dinner. d:vote 4099 Instrument Microphones were also used on the extensive percussion ensemble.

“The drums were very dynamic and the d:vote 4099s captured every nuance,” Lorman says. “Among the many highlights of the Gala Dinner were vocal performances by the opera singers, Liao Changyong, Laura Wright and You Hongfei, and by Tan Weiwei, China’s premier pop artist. For these artists I used DPA d:facto™ Vocal Microphones and I must say, I was incredibly impressed by the results these mics delivered.”

The vocalists all used wireless versions of the d:facto Vocal Microphone, in conjunction with a Shure R wireless system. UK opera singer, Laura Wright, was an inspiration for this choice as she preferred to work with a handheld microphone rather than use a headset mic. According to Lorman, the two Chinese opera singers were comfortable to use d:facto Vocal Microphones, and these were provided for all three performers.

“I haven’t experienced the d:facto Vocal Microphone before and I was very impressed by it,” Lorman adds. “The sound it delivered was very smooth and clean, and perfect at the top end. The off axis response was very tight, with excellent plosives rejection and subtle proximity effect, all excellent characteristics. Singers all love the way it feels in their hands and are very comfortable with it. d:facto really is a very formidable and unique microphone, and I can see why artists like Sting are using it.”

Ron Lorman has successfully used DPA d:fine Headset Microphones for other critical productions. Recently at a London Fortune event, d:fine Headset Microphones were again in his arsenal, along with a d:facto Vocal Microphone for the singer who provided the entertainment.

“I’m so impressed with the d:facto Vocal Microphone and the d:vote 4099 Instrument Microphones with the multiple mounts that I have now purchased them for my own stock,” Lorman adds, “and I can predict that they will be getting plenty of use.”

This Cloud-based service alleviates the need for businesses to build an expensive, in-house and resource-intensive media library by allowing content owners and distributors to publish content online. The platform also supports live streaming of 4K UHD, or High Definition video. Graphics and other audio and visual material can be associated with files, for brand promotion or to generate advertisement revenue.

PROVYS’ software solution provides broadcasters with the mature and robust channel management and advertisement sales tools needed to increase productivity and gain strategic insight into business processes.

Integration of vuMedia™ with PROVYS is seamless. No additional inputs are required. Customers who choose PROVYS with vuMedia™ will have front-end access to their own catalogue, charts and metadata, as well as a video player with a smart URL, which will allow movies to be played on a variety of different devices. Other vumedia™ features include statistical analysis, advertisement injection and social network integration are also available, bringing the full power of OTT to a much wider audience.

TV schedules can also appear within vuMedia™. The TV schedule can be composed of Live, VoD or Catch-up content. Visual Unity processes the titles based on the rights that belong to each particular content. Subscribers can easily access their content on any device, not only through a catalogue interface, but also through a TV schedule (program guide), which lists what will be broadcast and when. Furthermore, end users can access their favourite content even after it finishes, using multi-hour buffering. With vuMedia™, subscribers can watch their entertainment on any device, anytime and anywhere.

Tomas Petru, CEO of Visual Unity, says: “This is a significant development for PROVYS’ customers as it offers a completely automated online video platform where content can be managed centrally, thus saving time, equipment cost and manpower. It will also increase business bandwidth by providing broadcasters with an easy and effective way to utilize all their content rights.”

The new solution is completely connected to Visual Unity’s content delivery Network (CDN) module, vuNet™, with connectors to other worldwide CDN’s such as Akamai, Limelight, Level3, Du and MediaNova.

Josef Vasica, CEO of PROVYS comments, “We are delighted to present the results of our common development at our booth. Visual Unity brings years of OTT expertise and breath of services that complement our own. This as a triple win situation for all: PROVYS, Visual, and our customers. The combined best practices allow us to build even better products, services and overall solutions for our clients.”

Gabriel Dusil, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Strategy, adds: “This is an exciting joint project we have developed with PROVYS, and we see it as a major endorsement of our vuMedia™ OTT platform. Our joint offering is a solution that speaks to what is at the top of the broadcaster’s agenda – a Cloud-based service that allows them to maintain rights to their content, while providing flexible methods to monetize their titles onto multiple screens.”

Media Group International Completes A Prestigious Project for MBC Group

Leading systems integrator Media Group International has completed a prestigious project for Middle East broadcaster MBC Group (Middle East Broadcasting Centre) to install a state of the art News facility in Cairo, Egypt.

MBC Group, the first private free-to-air satellite broadcasting company in the Arab World which was launched in London in 1991 and later moved to its headquarters in Dubai in 2002, has grown to become a well-established media group that enriches people’s lives through information, interaction and entertainment. Based in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, MBC Group includes 12 television channels. The broadcaster engaged Media Group International (MGI) on the basis of the company’s established reputation for high quality systems integration and project management. MGI has over 35 years’ experience of systems integration in the Gulf region and represents many worldwide broadcast equipment manufacturers. It also serves TV channels and networks, movie studios and network operators in the region, providing telecommunications, broadcasting, integrated systems and state-of-the-art security.

Raed Bacho, Broadcast Manager, MBC Group says: “MGI’s reputation for delivering world-class broadcast solutions was a key factor in our decision to award the company the contract. Our Cairo News facility is a major investment and one that required careful planning. We were delighted by the efficiency and timely results.”

MGI’s brief was to provide MBC Group with an entire News facility consisting of a broadcast control room/gallery, a central apparatus room, an audio studio, a broadcast studio, a Master Control Room, a Newsroom and various editing and production facilities. The company was also responsible for the entire IT infrastructure and the installation of all power requirements.

“MBC’s on-air requirements meant that we were up against extremely tight deadlines,” says Paul Wallis, MGI’s Sales Director. “We also undertook this project during the recent political unrest, which created its own set of issues. On at least one occasion our team could not leave the facility overnight because demonstrators were protesting outside.”

At a time when many companies are avoiding outlay in Egypt, MBC’s decision to build this new facility – and its equipment choices – reflect its determination to invest in the very latest technology in order to bring high quality news coverage to the people of Egypt.

“In consultation with MGI’s experienced technical team, MBC selected some of the latest ground breaking equipment, including cutting-edge Grass Valley LDX-80 studio cameras that adopt cmos technology as opposed to traditional CCD,” says Wallis. “At the heart of the system is a full Avid Newsvision production system, complemented by the latest Viztr on air graphics. Other technical highlights include a powerful Ross live production switcher, a Trilogy Broadcast communications system, a state of the art video wall and a Studer All-In-One Vista audio mixing console, the first of its kind to be installed in Egypt.”

Wallis adds that the project was not without its challenges, but thanks to MGI’s excellent relationships with the various manufacturers involved, these were quickly overcome.

“We were faced with some tough technology changes that could have delayed the on-air deadline, but fortunately we had chosen manufacturers who helped us work around this problem and enabled us to keep our commitment to MBC,” he says.

MBC’s News facility in Cairo is now up and running, delivering news to the broadcaster’s Egyptian viewers.
