Funky Junk helps Ruadhri Cushnan Upgrade His Monitors

Funky Junk, Europe’s leading supplier of new and refurbished professional recording equipment and services, has supplied Award-winning Mix engineer Ruadhri Cushnan with a pair of ATC SM25A studio monitors.

“I knew ATC had a great reputation as a monitor manufacturer and I’d specifically heard a few people talk favourably about the SM25s,” Ruadhri Cushnan says. “When I mentioned to the Funky Junk guys that I needed to improve my monitors they suggested that I try them. I did, and they were amazing, so I decided to buy a pair.”

The monitors have now been installed at Cushnan’s project studio.

“I’ve had my own Mix space since 2007, but recently moved to my current space because it is slightly bigger and gives me more room to accommodate my ever expanding gear racks,”

Cushnan says. “Being near Funky Junk was a happy accident but one that has definitely worked out well. It’s like having a big studio maintenance department right on the doorstep. The guys are very friendly and always happy to help – and they have a good coffee machine.”

Ruadhri Cushnan started his career as an assistant engineer at Metropolis Studios before turning his hand to freelance projects. Having worked as a programmer, writer and re-mixer, Cushnan is now best known as a Mix engineer – an area he has been focusing on since 2007. Recent projects have included album and single mixes for Ed Sheeran, Half Moon Run, The Maccabees, Nina Nesbitt and Foy Vance. He was also responsible for mixing Mumford & Son’s album Babel, for which he received a Grammy in 2013.

Virtually all of Cushnan’s mix projects are carried out at his project studio where he tends to mix ‘in the box’, but with lots of traditional analogue outboard as part of the workflow.

“I occasionally record some vocals and overdubs but 90% of my time is spent mixing,” he explains. “Obviously monitoring is critical and that’s why I needed to upgrade. I’m delighted with the ATC SM25s, which I’ve been using for a little while now. They really do have an incredible amount of detail and are very easy to listen to. I can mix on them at a good level for hours and not get tired out. When I first got them I put on some old favourite vinyls that I thought I knew well and, although it’s a real cliché, it was like hearing them fresh for the first time. They are excellent speakers.”

Cushnan adds that he was very happy with the help and advice Funky Junk’s technical boffins gave him. “They have a great support system and are always very competitive on price,” he says.

The success Ruadhri Cushnan enjoyed in 2012 and 2013 looks set to continue this year as he is already busy working on album projects for Luke Sital Singh (Parlophone) Saint Raymond (Warner/Asylum), King Charles (Universal/Republic), Foy Vance (Glassnote) and Nina Nesbitt.

DPA Microphones Bring Added Clarity To David Gray’s Vocals

Leading singer songwriter David Gray has become the latest in a long line of vocalists to discover the benefits of DPA Microphones’ new d:facto™ Vocal Microphone.

Gray’s well-crafted songs were delivered with pristine clarity during his recent Sounding Out tour of Ireland after FOH engineer Graham Pattison introduced DPA’s d:facto II into the equipment line-up.

“I’ve been a fan of DPA microphones for some time because they deliver such great sound quality,” Pattison says. “However, this was the first time I’d had the opportunity to use the new d:facto II Vocal Microphone and I was really impressed with the results we achieved. Right from the first syllable in rehearsals I knew we were onto a winner, but it wasn’t until the first show in Ireland a few days later that I really heard the vocal clarity and exceptional quality through a large venue sound system. There were no gain or feedback issues, and even when left with a flat EQ it sounded exactly how I’m used to hearing David’s voice. The EQ I did end up using was just to help the vocal sit in well with the instrumentation.”

Pattison adds that Gray didn’t question why his microphone had been changed.

“He trusted my judgment and his own ears,” he explains. “During the two week tour we played 11 shows, and did a live streamed and filmed ‘other voices’ show and a live on air RTE radio show. Everyone was coming back to me with very positive feedback about the sound in general as well as his vocal performance.”

Pattison first began working with David Gray in 2007 and since then he has engineered all his live gigs. In 2011, Gray’s Lost and Found tour gave him the opportunity to experiment with a different technical approach and it was on that occasion that he began using DPA microphones.

“The Lost and Found tour was a more acoustic presentation of David’s songs, so we used different instrumentation,” Pattison explains. “We also added a couple of new musicians who could cover backing vocalist duties, so at times we had a five voice choir to back up David’s main vocal.”

Thanks to the acoustic nature of the show, Pattison decided that DPA microphones would be the perfect way to capture the instruments on stage. After speaking with DP’A UK distributor Sound Network about the tour’s requirements, Pattison settled on using two d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones for the double bass and cello, two d:dicate™ 4011 Recording Microphones for the acoustic guitar and mandolin, two 4023 microphones for the grand piano and one d:vote 4099 Instrument Microphone for Gray’s trademark handpump harmonium.

“I chose DPA microphones for their sound quality – it really was as simple as that,” Pattison says. “DPA microphones have always been regarded as the best you can buy, so when I had an opportunity to acquire some mics for my studio and for live shows, I knew that DPA was the way I wanted to go. Apart from their exceptional sound quality, I’ve also find them extremely versatile because they can be mounted in so many different ways, including directly onto the instrument.”

Pattison says that DPA microphones are now standard on all the tours he engineers because they are so rugged and reliable.

“I did three tours last year, all with DPA, and I didn’t have any microphone failures,” he says. “Even the miniature cardioid microphone I’ve been using on David’s pump harmonium is still going strong. The build quality, particularly of the d:dicate 4011 Recording Microphones, is fantastic and no matter where in the world I ship them, they always withstand the rigors of freighting and come out of their boxes working perfectly every time.

“With an ever increasing vocal choir, I am now looking forward to getting my hands on some more DPA d:facto Vocal Microphones. With those, and the d:vote 4099 drum microphones, DPA will certainly be getting a good run in.”

Jünger Audio Celebrates Sales Success In China

As China celebrates the start of a New Year, dynamics specialist Jünger Audio is also marking an important event – the culmination of its most successful sales year in the country.

“Since opening a dedicated regional office in Beijing in 2010, we have seen our Chinese sales grow year on year,” says Jünger Audio CEO Peter Pörs. “However, 2013 was successful with sales exceeding our expectations. We shipped a wide range of audio processors which were delivered to a number of different Chinese broadcasters. 44 D*AP4 LM Digital Audio Processors went to GZTV, therefore our success was especially noticeable in the Guang Dong region where all three provincial and city TV stations are now using Jünger Audio products to control broadcast loudness.”

Pörs adds that Jünger Audio’s achievements in China are down to two key factors – having a permanent base in the country, which inspires customer confidence, and offering a range of high quality products that are renowned for their ability to deliver uncompromised audio loudness management.

“Our Beijing office is headed by Jian Gao, a Chinese national who understood both the business climate and our own industry,” he says. “Jian’s broadcast and pro audio experience, combined with her local knowledge, make a huge difference to how we are perceived by our Chinese customers. Having a local presence reassures our customers as they know they will be properly supported after they buy.”

Jünger Audio’s D*AP4 LM series has proved particularly popular in China because it gives users the processing quality and features offered by Jünger Audio’s flagship T*AP Television Audio Processors, but in a smaller 4 or 2 channel system. Incorporating Jünger Audio’s unique LEVEL MAGIC™ algorithm, the unit focuses on automatic and adaptive loudness management compliant with all current broadcast audio loudness recommendations including ITU.1770 Standards (revisions 1, 2 and 3) as well as recommended practices ATSC A/85 (2011/2013), ARIB TR-B32, Free TV OP-59, Portaria 354 and EBU R128.

Recent customers in China have included Guang Zhou TV, which has investing in 44 D*AP4 LM processors, making this one of the largest single orders to PRC in the company’s history. As the TV station of Guang Zhou city, GZTV is determined to ensure that its viewers receive the highest quality audio and it is therefore installing Jünger Audio’s loudness control throughout its playout chain and advertising servers.

Another prestigious Jünger Audio customer is Nan Fang TV Station, the second provincial terrestrial and satellite TV station in Guang Dong province. Nan Fang TV is now using D*AP4 LM processors and J*AM loudness logging software to control and monitor loudness quality on all eight of its TV channels.

In the same region, Guang Dong TV Station in Guang Zhou city has invested in 12 D*AP4 LM processors and six T*AP Television Audio Processors as part of a station upgrade to HD. These units have been installed on GDTV’s three HD channels and six SD channels, all of which will go on-air once the station completes its system upgrades.

Finally, major satellite TV station ShenZhen TV, based in Shen Zhen city, has recently started using Jünger Audio D*AP4 and J*AM loudness logging software to monitor and log its program loudness.

“Chinese broadcasters are now well aware of the importance of loudness control and are choosing Jünger Audio’s products to achieve it because they meet China’s demands for technical sophistication and audio quality,” Jian Gao says. “In recent months, Jünger Audio’s loudness control and Surround production tools have been used on some highly prestigious broadcasts – for example Shanghai Media Group’s Season One finale of The Chinese Idol, which was broadcast in August 2013; all Guang Dong TV’s New Year’s Eve concerts since 2012 and ZITV’s Voice of China, including the Season 2 Finale in 2013 where Jünger Audio’s M*AP processor was used as the Dolby surround signal monitor control. That broadcast also featured two T*AP units, which were used for Dolby E encoding from ZITV’s HD OB Van where they performed beautifully.”

Trevor Horn’s Band to Perform Live at MPG Awards 2014

Renowned producer, musician and songwriter Trevor Horn has revealed his plans to perform live at next month’s Music Producers Guild Awards in London – and that he will be joined on stage by some ‘special guests’.

Horn, who is attending the event to receive the Outstanding Contribution to UK Music Award, will perform as part of the supergroup Producers, the band he established in 2006 with former 10CC musician Lol Crème, award-winning engineer and producer Stephen Lipson and drummer Ash Soan. This exciting collection of extraordinarily highly regarded producers and artists have scored over 200 hit singles and albums, including their own debut album Made in Basing Street, which was released in 2012.

Music Producers Guild Chairman Steve Levine says: “A live performance by Producers is quite a coup for the MPG and we’re really thrilled that guests attending our 2014 Awards ceremony will have the opportunity to witness this unique performance. The MPG Awards are always a popular event on the music industry calendar because they are such a joyful celebration of the UK’s recording talent, but when you get the chance to see a supergroup play live as well, you just know it’s going to be a brilliant night.”

The MPG is presenting Trevor Horn with the PPL-sponsored Outstanding Contribution to UK Music Award in recognition of a remarkable career that has spanned more than three decades. The award he will receive from the MPG acknowledges those who have made a significant contribution over a long period of time to the success of the UK music recording industry.

Described variously as ‘unashamedly an exhibitionist’, an ‘architect of sound’ and a producer whose work is linked by a common theme of excellence, Horn has been responsible for numerous hits for artists such as ABC, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Grace Jones and Robbie Williams. He first achieved success as an artist with The Buggles, Yes and Art of Noise, but eventually turned to production and song writing where he established a reputation for pushing the boundaries of music production. During the early 1980s he set up Sarm Studios in London and also ZTT Records and music publishing company Perfect Songs.

Trevor Horn will be presented with his award at the MPG’s 2014 Awards Ceremony, which takes place on February 13th at the Park Plaza Riverbank Hotel in London. Tickets for the event are available by emailing event organiser, Joe Edwards. Email: joe@ilikethesoundofthat.com

Prism Sound Unveils Atlas – Another New Audio Interface

Internationally renowned manufacturer Prism Sound will score a hat trick at NAMM 2014 when it unveils Atlas – its third new interface product to be launched in just eight months (Booth 7123).

Complementing the company’s existing Orpheus, Lyra and Titan interfaces, Atlas offers the same no-compromise design and acclaimed converter performance that users have long come to expect from Prism Sound’s high quality audio products.

Designed with Prism Sound’s latest and award-winning CleverClox clocking technology and incorporating eight of the company’s popular mic pre’s as standard, this latest addition to the USB interface family is aimed squarely at multitrack recording applications. Atlas offers recording professionals ultimate quality analogue and digital I/O for Mac or Windows PC at sample rates up to 192kHz via a simple USB interface. In addition to the USB host interface, Atlas also features Prism Sound’s new MDIO interface expansion slot, which was first incorporated into Titan and announced at AES New York in October 2013. Using this miniature expansion slot users can, for example, directly connect to Pro Tools|HDX systems. A range of other MDIO interfaces is planned for later introduction. Atlas will also run with Apple and Windows native applications over USB.

Graham Boswell, Sales Director of Prism Sound, says: “The biggest news for Prism Sound customers is that now Atlas, Titan and Lyra all will be capable of aggregated operation in both MAC and Windows PC environments. This makes it possible to link up a number of different units for multichannel applications – for example 24 track, 32 track – or even bigger set-ups – while retaining a USB connection for each unit. In the Windows environment, Prism Sound provide a new driver that aggregates the units and presents a single multitrack interface to your DAW application for I/O routing. This gives our customers enormous choice and flexibility and we are confident that countless more hit records and blockbuster film scores will benefit from Prism Sound’s acclaimed converter performance thanks to the ongoing development of our interface range.”

As with all Prism Sound audio interface products, Atlas has been specifically designed to meet customer demand. The unit draws on Prism Sound’s conversion and clocking expertise developed over many years in products ranging from the AD-2 and DA-2 and the popular ADA-8XR modular converter to Orpheus and the latest releases, Lyra and Titan. It offers eight analogue inputs, eight analogue outputs plus S/PDIF and TOSLINK optical digital I/O ports. The optical ports can also be used for ADAT, giving a single Atlas unit a maximum capability of 18 concurrent input and output channels plus dual stereo headphones.

Atlas also features high quality digitally-controlled preamplifiers – eight for microphones and two for instruments, which are automatically selected when the respective sources are plugged in. An assignable rotary control is provided for monitoring or output level control, which can be applied to any desired set of output channels. In addition, dual stereo headphone outputs are provided, each with its own volume control.

Building on the versatile DSP features of the Prism Sound Orpheus and Titan interfaces, Atlas has a powerful built-in DSP engine which provides high precision input and output conditioning functions, as well as a fully-featured mixer for every Atlas output channel, including ADAT channels. Each output can be driven with its own zero-latency mix of input channels and DAW feeds, allowing flexible performers’ foldback feeds to be created, as well as stereo or 5.1/7.1 surround monitoring feeds, controlled by the front-panel rotary control if desired. Titan’s high quality analogue outputs are ideally suited for use with analogue summing boxes.

All of Atlas’ functions, aside from the front panel monitor and headphone level controls, are controlled from a dedicated Control Panel app, which opens on-screen as a separate panel alongside the user’s existing editing software.

“Launching three new products in less than a year is a record for Prism Sound and indicates our determination to offer recording professionals a wide choice of the high quality, richly featured and competitive tools that they want and need,” Graham Boswell adds. “We are on a roll now, so watch this space because we have even more exciting new products scheduled for 2014.”
Atlas will be officially unveiled at NAMM 2014, which runs from January 23rd – 26th in Los Angeles, USA. For more information please visit www.prismsound.com or visit Prism Sound’s NAMM Booth 7123 for a demo.

The Music Producers Guild Gives Special Recognition To Sean Davies

The Music Producers Guild is delighted to announce that Sean Davies, an internationally acclaimed studio designer, technical engineer and authority on disc cutting lathes, will be presented with a Special Recognition Award at the MPG Awards 2014, which take place in London next month.

Renowned as an audio consultant, Davies is also at the heart of the UK and European disc cutting business thanks to his extensive knowledge of cutting techniques, lacquers and the ins and outs of the equipment needed to cut a vinyl record.

He first became interested in audio at the age of 13 when he began repairing broken radios and cutting discs at home. His hobby developed into a career when he was offered a job at IBC Studios, initially in the maintenance department and then in the disc cutting operation. Davies’ reputation as an expert soon spread, securing him other key technical positions until he eventually founded his own company, SW Davies Ltd, which specialises in maintaining high quality disc-cutting lathes and supporting cutting facilities around the world.

Although he recently announced his retirement after 53 years in the professional audio industry, Davies is still acting as a consultant – most notably for the recently launched Art of Vinyl (AoV), a new maintenance business headed by the former-Metropolis Mastering engineer Crispin Murray and audio/video equipment repair specialist Duncan Crimmins.

Ray Staff, of the MPG’s Mastering Group which nominated Sean Davies for a prestigious Special Recognition Award, says: “I am so pleased Sean is receiving this acknowledgment. He has been my mentor for over 40 years. Sean is a generous educator, gifted with the ability to explain often complex theories, simply and clearly. His skills and knowledge have benefited every aspect of recording, mastering, manufacturing and design. He is a truly unique man in our industry.”

Sean Davies will be presented with his award at the MPG 2014 Awards ceremony, which takes place on February 13th at the at the Park Plaza Riverbank Hotel in London.

Now firmly established as a must-attend industry event, the MPG Awards attract music industry stars and VIPs who turn out in force to celebrate the enormous contribution that recording professionals make to the success of the UK’s music industry. In 2014, the MPG is once again collaborating with the BRITS to present the winner of its Producer of the Year Award with a BRIT Award for Best Producer.
