SMPTE and SCIEN Continue to Drive Groundbreaking Discourse With 2014 ETIA Conference Program

‘Entertainment Technology in the Internet Age’ Will Draw Hollywood and Silicon Valley Together to Examine Key Issues in Internet-Based Media Delivery

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — May 19, 2014 – The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers(R) (SMPTE(R)), the worldwide leader in motion-imaging standards and education for the communications, media, entertainment, and technology industries, and the Stanford Center for Image Systems Engineering (SCIEN) have released details on the second annual “Entertainment Technology in the Internet Age” (ETIA) conference, beginning June 18 at Stanford University’s Palo Alto, California, campus.

The two-day event, co-produced by SMPTE and SCIEN, will explain the complex synergies created by the industry’s volatile mix of creativity, advancing IP/IT technologies, and business drivers. ETIA also will give attendees an unparalleled opportunity to network and engage with executives from both traditional and new media industry sectors.

“As advances in media technology and greater bandwidth availability have lowered barriers to content creation and Internet-based distribution, media consumers have moved in significant numbers from pay-TV services to Web-based services, many relying solely on the Internet for entertainment content,” said Patrick Griffis, SMPTE education vice president and ETIA conference co-chair. “These dramatic and ongoing trends demand that we examine both the ‘old’ and the ‘new’ in the context of the technology requirements for delivering a compelling entertainment experience over the Internet, and that’s exactly what this year’s conference will do.”

During the conference, technology and creative experts will explore the convergence of traditional and Web-based media, focusing on key attributes of each and predicting future technical trends. Through engaging panel discussions and presentations, with abundant opportunity for audience participation and networking, the ETIA conference will examine topics including content creation, distribution, and monetization, as well as the technical tools and solutions that shape the user experience.

“No other industry event allows delegates to get so close to this rich mix of technology leaders — the individuals who will shape the industry’s future,” said Joyce Farrell, executive director of SCIEN and ETIA conference co-chair. “The first ETIA conference brought nearly 300 executives, academics, and creative professionals from both Silicon Valley and the Hollywood community together for a unique and important series of conversations on Internet-delivered entertainment, and we expect this year’s event to build on that success, facilitating further discourse on critical issues in entertainment technology.”

Program highlights include a keynote presentation, titled “Evolving Web Business Models for Entertainment,” by Vubitquity CEO Darcy Antonellis, who will offer insight into the new monetization opportunities and models in the multiplatform entertainment environment. With panelists from Sinclair Broadcast Group and CEA, “Is the Big Stick TV Antenna Dead?” will consider the future (dim or rosy?) of traditional over-the-air broadcasting and the impact of evolving transmission technologies on the use of the broadcast spectrum.

ETIA attendees also will have the chance to hear the latest on net neutrality from FCC Wireline Deputy Bureau Chief Matthew DelNero. The FCC insider will offer his perspective on the new rules and on hot issues such as the possibility of paid “fast lanes” and the potential for ISP behavior that harms consumers.

Other 2014 ETIA sessions continue the blending of traditional and Web-based media perspectives, addressing topics including the suitability of Web delivery for high-quality video and audio, the impact of mobility on online media consumption, the race for over-the-top leadership, and evolving business models for Internet-based content delivery. Experts working in the field will discuss the translation of traditional content for multiplatform distribution, the challenges of presenting live sports events, the art of transmedia storytelling, the pairing of data and technology to engage consumers across devices, the preservation of artistic intent through Internet-based delivery, and disruptive innovation in filmmaking, sports, and games.

A reception within the Interactive Exploration Zone, which will feature kiosks showcasing the technologies driving the evolution of entertainment, will give attendees a firsthand look at how concepts that once seemed an impossibility — such as the Holodeck in the “Star Trek” series –are becoming a reality. In the subsequent evening session titled “The Holodeck: Entertainment for the Next Generation,” Bing Gordon will describe the power of such immersive technologies to complement and enhance entertainment experiences.

Conference registration and further details about the ETIA conference program are available at smpte.org/etia2014.

Sonnet Introduces Fusion QR RAID 5 SATA Storage System With Quad Interface

Newest Member of Sonnet’s Award-Winning Fusion Family Offers Highly Affordable Four-Drive RAID 5 Storage in a Lightweight and Portable Package

IRVINE, Calif. — May 14, 2014 – Sonnet Technologies today announced the launch of the Fusion(TM) QR, a compact and portable four-drive RAID 5 SATA storage system. The Fusion QR replaces the company’s Fusion D400QR5, which also offered reliable and affordable RAID 5 storage. Like the legacy system, the Fusion QR integrates a high-performance RAID 5 controller for maximum versatility, critical data protection, and added value, and offers a flexible quad interface that includes eSATA, dual FireWire 800, and USB 3.0.

“With the Fusion QR, we took everything that pros loved about the D400QR5 and made it lighter, more portable, and more affordable than ever. It is a great solution for on-location or mobile productions that require a reliable and versatile four-drive SATA storage in a compact package,” said Robert Farnsworth, Sonnet CEO.

Available without drives, and in 8TB, 12TB, and 16TB configurations, the Fusion QR features a high-performance internal RAID controller that manages the enclosed 3.5-inch hard drives and offers five drive configuration options for maximum flexibility. The RAID 5 configuration offers the best performance with enhanced security for critical files and provides data protection in case one of the drives fails. Other configurations include maximum capacity and performance (RAID 0), balanced performance and security (RAID 10), and most concurrent audio file editing (JBOD). By setting a switch, users can select RAID modes and configure the drives to meet their performance and data security requirements.

The Fusion QR delivers data transfers up to 250 MB/sec read and 240 MB/sec write with its drives configured as a RAID 5 group. The storage system’s USB 3.0, locking eSATA, and dual FireWire 800 interfaces, with three matching cables included, enable users to connect the Fusion QR to practically any computer. A built-in carrying handle makes the rugged and lightweight enclosure highly portable and a large, low-noise fan keeps the QR cool in noise-sensitive environments.

The Fusion QR is available now with suggested retail prices ranging from $369 for the model without drives (0TB) to $1,499 for the 16TB model. The Fusion QR is backed with Sonnet’s one-year warranty. More information on the Fusion QR is available at http://www.sonnettech.com/product/fusionqr.html.

Drake’s DSE 2 PLUS Dual Multiplexing Encoder Now Shipping

With a Single Platform for Encoding and QAM Multiplexing, the DSE 2 PLUS Dramatically Simplifies HD Video Distribution for a Wide Range of Applications

MIAMISBURG, Ohio — May 12, 2014 — R.L. Drake today announced that its DSE 2 PLUS dual multiplexing encoder is now shipping. By combining encoding and QAM modulation capabilities within a single stand-alone unit, the DSE 2 PLUS dramatically simplifies HD video distribution. Specifically designed to support digital signage applications, the DSE 2 PLUS also brings value to a variety of other applications within the house of worship, education, healthcare, government, and hospitality markets. The encoder will be on display in the Drake booth N1763 at InfoComm 2014, June 18-20 in Las Vegas.

“The DSE 2 PLUS brings simplicity, reliability, and affordability to organizations wanting to distribute multiple HD programs,” said Andy Ruffin, vice president of sales at Drake. “At InfoComm 2014, we’ll demonstrate the encoder’s rich feature set, including the ability to handle a variety of inputs, support encoding and modulation, and streamline digital HD program delivery.”

The DSE 2 PLUS digitally encodes two uncompressed HDMI, high-resolution component video or VGA inputs to MPEG-2 or MPEG-4/H.264, and then uses an internal multiplexing QAM modulator and low-noise upconverter to enable distribution of two HD programs over existing legacy fiber and coaxial networks. Leveraging the bandwidth savings provided by the multiplexing capability of the DSE 2 PLUS, users can deliver twice as much content at half the bandwidth. This enables users to tap into existing networks of digital HD displays to provide informational video, revenue-generating advertising, or promotional content in a vibrant high- definition format while conserving valuable bandwidth on the network.

Harnessing the technology and engineering expertise behind the proven Drake DSE24 digital signage encoder, the Drake DSE 2 PLUS offers superior reliability and consistent performance. The dual multiplexing encoder receives high-resolution component video, VGA, or HDMI from two separate sources and encodes these inputs to MPEG-2 or MPEG-4/H.264 at resolutions of up to 1080i. Audio is encoded to Dolby(R) Digital or the MPEG-1 Audio Layer II compression format. Support for closed-captioning assures the continued accessibility of captioned content.

The encoder’s GUI-based remote network control and monitoring gives users the option of configuring and adjusting parameters either via an Ethernet connection or by directly connecting a laptop to the Ethernet port on site. While the system is offered as a rack-mount unit, a desktop configuration is also available as an option.

More information about the new DSE 2 PLUS and other Drake products is available at www.rldrake.com.

For interactive classrooms, collaborative boardrooms, and intuitive wayfinding solutions, the multitouch technology featured on BenQ’s new 70-inch RP700+ interactive flat-panel display provides responsive feedback with accurate positioning to augment interactivity in any digital signage application. As a result, students, presenters, and information-seekers can simply touch the screen for responsive panning, zooming, and scrolling — just like a tablet. For more comfortable viewing, the RP700+ features advanced anti-glare glass to reduce screen reflection and eliminate visual interference, preventing both eye fatigue and stress. The display supports a low blue light mode for further visual protection and increases convenience via multiplatform compatibility with software such as Chrome OS, and has additional connectivity features such as a front panel input/output for added flexibility.

Designed for open public spaces, BenQ’s public information displays provide advanced innovations that enliven any targeted or round-the-clock signage installation. Slim and lightweight, the DL550F full HD 55-inch dual-side display is perfect for retail stores, transportation areas, or public venues offering users access to information from both sides of the panel. The dual-sided panels are only one-inch thick and light enough to be hung from a ceiling or placed on a stand. BenQ’s new bar displays enable ultra-widescreen signage in either 28-inch (BH280) or 38-inch (BH380) formats for public transit, restaurant menu boards, and more. Featuring 700 nits (28 inch) and 1500 nits (38 inch) of high brightness, 176/176-degree wide viewing angles, in addition to DVI and VGA multiple signal interfaces, the panels can be used in portrait or landscape mode to support kiosk applications. Also on display will be BenQ’s super narrow bezel PH550, designed specifically for building seamless and breathtaking videowalls. The 55-inch display includes BenQ’s Multiple Display Administrator application to control and monitor multiple displays remotely with ease, and the optional Color Calibration solution that automatically unifies the color profile of each videowall display for easy setup and installation.

Featuring auto calibration, the device allows teachers and students to interact using up to four PointWrite(TM) pens or via finger-touch technology for simple hands-on collaboration directly on the screen. Easy to set up and install, the MW853UST features a wall mount plate integrated directly onto the projector, 3D PC and Blu-ray readiness, and double 10W speakers, creating a complete multimedia solution that turns classrooms into collaborative and engaging learning spaces.

For added convenience, the unit is equipped with integrated 10W speakers and the ability to cast 3D content directly from PCs and Blu-ray devices, allowing presenters to enjoy lifelike experiences without sacrificing setup speed. For IT managers, the MH740′s LAN control feature simplifies facility-wide maintenance by allowing easy remote monitoring and control directly from workstations. To lower total cost of ownership, the projector features BenQ’s SmartEco(TM) technology, which automatically adjusts lamp power to deliver up to 3,500 hours of lamp life.

For content everywhere portability, the compact and easy to use Ultra-Lite GP20 projector offers LED projection backed by 700 Colorific lumens, native WXGA resolution, and support for resolutions up to UXGA. PC 3D-ready, the GP20 lets users share HD-quality movies, videos, photos, games, and presentations on any wall or video screen, casting up to a 10-foot diagonal image from 10 feet away.

Professional Performance With Increased Visual Comfort: BenQ RevolutionEyes(TM) Monitors
BenQ’s 32-inch 4K Ultra HD BL3201PT wide quad high-definition (WQHD) professional monitor is designed for 3D printing, computer-aided design (CAD), and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM). With an AHVA panel enabling 178-degree horizontal and vertical viewing angles, the unit’s 2560×1440 resolution brings 77 percent more working space to users. Displaying graphics at 4K, the eye-care monitor enables higher pixels per inch (ppi) for a sharper, more precise viewing experience. With the monitor’s unique CAD/CAM mode, users obtain a special color map for popular CAD programs, which makes small details in wireframes more visible, while the unit’s Display Pilot software enables users to change color settings automatically based on specific applications. To further simplify design workflows, the unit’s Auto-Pivot function automatically rotates and partitions content when the display is turned from landscape to portrait mode and vice versa. To increase user comfort during long periods of computer use, the BL3201PT also incorporates BenQ’s exclusive ZeroFlicker(TM) technology.

Made specifically for creative professionals such as photographers, graphic designers, color re-touchers, and printers who rely heavily on color accuracy, BenQ’s PG2401PT certified color management monitor provides reliable, printing-certified soft-proofing precision at an incredibly affordable price. To facilitate collaboration between professionals, the self-calibrating PG2401PT monitor also covers 100 percent CMYK, 99 percent of the Adobe RGB color space, and is designed to take advantage of today’s most popular cloud-based color proofing services such as Adobe’s Creative Cloud and PantoneLIVE.
