Software Giant SAS Installs Fourth Utah Scientific Routing Switcher as Part of Massive Campus Expansion

SALT LAKE CITY — June 7, 2012 — Utah Scientific, the worldwide leader in routing and master control switchers, today announced that business analytics and software giant SAS has outfitted its award-winning new Executive Briefing Center on its 900-acre Cary, N.C. campus with a Utah Scientific digital routing switcher. SAS’ extensive in-house media operation, which already uses Utah Scientific gear for routing and master control, nearly doubled in size with the addition of the Executive Briefing Center. SAS will use its newest routing switcher in the Executive Briefing Center building to connect it to Campus Master Control in another building.

“We had ambitious goals for the Executive Briefing Center in terms of routing and master control. We chose Utah Scientific because we wanted a solution we knew would work,” said Woody Weaver, SAS engineering and operations manager. “We were looking for a fiber routing system centered on 1080i using HD-SDI, with the ability to mix fiber and copper inputs/outputs. We also sought a broadcast-quality router that we could control using our existing soft- and hard-panel controllers from either the Executive Briefing Center or Campus Master Control. And we wanted it to work with the Utah Scientific equipment we already had.”

SAS installed a Utah Scientific UTAH-400/288R routing switcher in the Executive Briefing Center for in-building master control, and connected it via fiber to the existing Utah Scientific campus master control system in another building. The switcher’s input/output options exceed the requirements of 1080i, and its I/O cards are 3G-SDI video-capable, giving SAS the ability to route video resolutions higher than 1080i in the future. The router provides options for single-mode fiber I/O cards to allow routing from building to building. Another key feature is the ability to route both fiber and copper feeds as needed, meaning SAS is not limited to one or the other. SAS’ existing Utah Scientific SC-4 control system allows the soft panels loaded on SAS computers to control the Utah Scientific equipment in both buildings.

The Executive Briefing Center hosts events in Building C and its equipment connects to the existing Utah Scientific routing system in Building V Master Control via campus fiber when needed for video editing, distribution, etc.

Now they’ve got a combination of Utah Scientific equipment that connects seamlessly so that Campus Master Control can take over whenever necessary.”

Chyron and Cell Journalist Team Up To Integrate User-Generated Content Into News Graphics

New Partnership Uses Open Standard MOS Redirection to Move Assets Across Platforms

MELVILLE, N.Y. — May 30, 2012 — Chyron today announced that it has integrated the company’s CAMIO graphics asset management server with the Web-based Cell Journalist application to streamline the incorporation of user-generated video content into a news rundown. This integration enables producers to locate Cell Journalist content through the Associated Press ENPS interface and quickly move it to the CAMIO server for playout to air. With this capability, broadcasters can maximize the value of user-generated content — such as media captured and uploaded by a field journalist or just a person off the street — which proves particularly useful during live breaking news and severe weather coverage.

“In the past, an integration of this sophistication would have been costly both in terms of development time and money,” said Jim Martinolich, vice president of integration technology at Chyron. “Now, however, we have been able to leverage MOS Redirection, part of the open-standard MOS communications protocol, to simplify the sharing of content among systems. In doing so, we make it easy for producers to access unique or timely user-generated content through the same ENPS interface they use to create their news stories. This is a simple solution with a huge benefit — namely, a more relevant and visually rich news product, without added workflow complexity.”

Cell Journalist is a comprehensive platform that allows users of mobile devices to upload, view, and share images and videos with a news station in seconds. Through the integration of Chyron’s CAMIO and Cell Journalist, a producer working in ENPS can locate uploaded stills and video hosted by Cell Journalist and then simply drag and drop them into a Chyron template and into the newsroom rundown.

Mix Engineer Jonathan Freed Uses SoundField Mic From Wohler to Give Viewers an In-Stadium Sound Experience

SAN FRANCISCO — May 31, 2012 — Wohler Technologies today announced that it has provided mix engineer Jonathan Freed with the SoundField DSF-2 microphone and DSF-3 digital surround processor for his work on NBA games and Monday-night NFL match-ups. Wohler is the U.S. distributor for the SoundField line of mics and processors.

“I’ve known about SoundField microphones since they were invented, and I have always wanted to experiment with one,” said Freed, who has been mixing audio for broadcast for more than 25 years. “The SoundField capsules have an extraordinarily smooth and wide response, at least equal to the very best microphones I have heard in 40 years of mixing, with a tremendous sense of detail and the sonic illusion of being located inside the stadium. The front-side pickup provides a heightened sense of size and place while the rear channels pick up a natural and convincing sense of being surrounded by the excited fans in the stands.”

Freed is responsible for capturing and sub-mixing all of the field-side audio on the Monday night football games, and he has been miking in 5.1 surround since he first began working on NFL’s weekly coverage three seasons ago. SoundField’s multi-capsule microphones capture audio from a single point source, rendering it completely phase-coherent. This is an advantage in 5.1 audio capture, as the surround ambience captured by SoundField mics can be collapsed to stereo or even mono for legacy broadcast without introducing any phase artifacts.

“Audio from the Soundfield DSF-2 always folds down well,” said Freed. “I am a fan of coherence where possible, and I always arrange my arrays so that my audio will fold down well to mono, stereo, or LtRt. SoundField fits right into that philosophy.”

Freed also credits the DSF-2 for its ability to be reoriented, once rigged, by adjustment of the mic’s control box. “If you get an unexpectedly loud section of the crowd in, say, the right rear of the soundstage, you can tip the microphone away from that area electronically. Before I had the DSF-2, I had to shut off one mic array to achieve the same thing, and that could unbalance the sound.”
