Biamp Introduces Vocia 1.6 With Nurse Call Integration at HIMSS 2014

Integrated paging solution creates quieter healthcare environments by automating and zoning code calls

BEAVERTON, Oregon — Feb. 21, 2014 — Biamp Systems, a leading provider of innovative, networked media systems, is introducing the new Vocia(R) 1.6 with Nurse Call Integration (NCI) at HIMSS 2014. Designed to reduce patient recovery time by creating a more peaceful healing environment, the networked public address and voice evacuation system combines zoned paging and prioritization with simple system supervision to provide critical messaging capabilities without compromising operational effectiveness.

“High noise levels in healthcare environments negatively impact the patient recovery process,” said Graeme Harrison, Executive Vice President of Marketing, Biamp Systems. “With Nurse Call Integration as a key capability in Vocia, Biamp is enabling hospitals to create a more peaceful healing environment by controlling where and when messages are heard, and at what volume level. This is done while integrating with the nurse call system for increased system interoperability.”

Part of Vocia’s networked public address and voice evacuation system, the Biamp(R) NCI system enhances the line’s professional-grade critical paging capabilities. Engineered to decrease noise levels, reduce alarm fatigue, and increase response times by targeting specific departments within facilities, the system enables zoned paging and prioritization of critical messages to eliminate the disturbance of patients from “all-call” pages. As a result, staff only receives pertinent paging messages, contributing to faster reaction times, quieter hospitals, and a more restful patient environment.

Created specifically for healthcare facilities, the NCI package enables a direct connection to new or existing supported nurse call systems. Messages are automatically assigned a zone and priority level before being streamed via Ethernet and played over an existing PA network. Playback can include speaking via microphone, pressing a bedside or nurse station button, or selecting preset messages from a digital switchboard. The Vocia-enabled solution consists of the Text-to-Speech Nurse Call Server (TTS-1nc), Message Server (MS-1), and Vocia Output (VO-4e) device. The entire system can also be easily supervised both onsite and remotely, and thanks to a decentralized architecture, eliminates the potential for a single point of system failure.

On display at HIMSS 2014 in Orlando, Florida, the Biamp NCI package will be highlighted alongside the company’s Vocia 1.6 platform, which now provides three new hardware devices — the eight channel Vocia Input (VI-8) for analog and digital paging inputs, the VoIP-1 telephone-paging adaptor, and the POTS-1 analog telephone-paging adaptor. Both systems will be demonstrated directly from booth 3515, featuring a code blue button and processor from Rauland-Borg.

SMPTE Announces Second Annual Entertainment Technology in the Internet Age (ETIA) Conference

SMPTE and SCIEN Partner Again to Produce Popular Conference, Scheduled for June 17-18 at Stanford University

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Feb. 20, 2014 — The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers(R) (SMPTE(R)), the worldwide leader in motion-imaging standards and education for the communications, media, entertainment, and technology industries, today announced that, working once again with the Stanford Center for Image Systems Engineering (SCIEN), the Society will produce the second annual “Entertainment Technology in the Internet Age” (ETIA) conference. Video Clarity NAB Product Preview

RTM Reduced-Reference Capability for Content Distributors
At the 2014 NAB Show, Video Clarity will showcase reduced-reference operating mode, the newest enhancement to its RTM real-time audio and video monitoring solution. Reduced-reference mode is intended for secondary content distributors such as cable, IPTV, direct broadcast, and satellite providers that receive programs from content originators and deliver them to the end customer. Unlike content originators, which can compare the entire original source signal to the entire processed signal nonstop in real time (i.e., full reference), content distributors do not have access to the original source signal. With RTM’s reduced-reference mode, content distributors can now use RTM to measure parts of the incoming signal against data sent from the originator (i.e., reduced reference), thus instituting an intelligent, accurate way of assessing signal quality and identifying faults.

When a content originator sends a satellite feed to secondary distributors, a device on the content originator end sends out a small amount of data via the Internet about portions of the source signal. Secondary distributors may subscribe to that data stream so that when they receive a satellite feed from the content originator, their RTM unit will compare the incoming video signal with the Internet data about the original source signal. RTM tests portions of the signal for video and audio quality and compares it with the pieces of reference data from the Internet (i.e., reduced reference), looking for noticeable differences such as breakups, freeze-frames, and black frames. RTM automatically records faults based on preset error thresholds so that the content distributor can take appropriate action.

This conference is the premier annual technology event covering current and future developments in media technology, content creation, image and sound, over-the-top, and the allied arts and sciences.

“The quality, depth, and ingenuity of the papers presented at the Annual Technical Conference consistently make it an essential event for the industry’s foremost technology decision makers and thought leaders,” said Paul Chapman, program chair of the SMPTE 2014 Annual Technical Conference. “Many of the ideas and solutions presented at the conference will go on to shape the future of our industry.”

The Caddie FP System Series
Designed to reduce setup and teardown time while providing all the signal transport necessary to streamline live video acquisition workflows, the Caddie FP Series by Joseph Fiber Solutions (JFS) maximizes the amount of time camera operators can spend on production and content. All electronics are removable from the base for fast and easy reconfigurations and repairs, keeping the camera setup intact for quick turnarounds. Signals include camera control, two returns, and five 3Gb/s video sends as standard, plus intercom and audio feeds.

Digital Fiber Transport Series DFT-8 and DFT-12 EXP
The DFT-8 is a 1-RU low-cost option for bidirectional flow of eight video signals on a signal fiber. (A dual fiber redundancy option is available.) Paths may be user-configurable in pairs of two for any order of send and receive requirements. The product includes redundant power supplies for total backup of critical paths.

The DFT-12 EXP is the newest addition to the DFT Series, and it features 12 paths of video over single or dual fibers and is user-configurable in pairs of two for any combination of send and receive requirements. Additional options are audio, MADI, RTS intercom, and data modules that are fitted into the front four slots.

The DFT Series provides the best customer-configurable signal transport package for its size. DFT units are perfect for ENG, small stadiums, and anywhere else that a simple point-to-point solution is required. All feature redundant power supplies for total backup of critical paths.

Caddie Tote System
At the 2014 NAB Show, Joseph’s will introduce the new Caddie Tote, a quick grab-and-go fiber transport package. Designed for ENG operations or any field use in adverse weather conditions, the system features four 3G video paths in each direction, four audios in each direction, 1G/s Ethernet path, and two channels of intercom. The unit is housed in a weatherproof enclosure that will provide full protection against the elements. MediorNet MetroN
The MediorNet family of real-time networks has been expanded with the addition of the 2-RU large-scale MediorNet MetroN core router. In enabling Riedel’s acclaimed networked approach to signal distribution and routing, the new MediorNet MetroN provides a real-time routing capacity of 64x 10G ports. MediorNet as a WAN Solution

Studer A-Link Card for MediorNet
Enabling direct integration of Riedel MediorNet real-time networks with Studer consoles and cores, the new A-Link interface module gives Studer users a highly scalable audio routing system offering I/O capacities in excess of 10,000 I/Os. Facilitating use of MediorNet as a decentralized audio router with integrated port redundancies, this solution offers massive I/O capacity in a very small hardware footprint. The integrated system may be configured to provide a video and audio routing solution with de-embedded audio from the SDI streams being sent to the Studer consoles, with the return signals then embedded back into the video.

Virtual Key Panel App for Artist Intercom System
Riedel’s Artist virtual key panels enable the use of smartphones and tablets (iOS, OS X®, and Android) as control panels in combination with any Artist digital matrix intercom system. These handheld devices can then provide the same functionality as full-featured, 12-key Artist control panels. The user operates the virtual control panel using the device’s touchscreen interface that can be configured via Riedel’s Director software.

NEP Denali’s Hugh Healy Part of Team That Receives NAMM TEC Award for Outstanding Audio Engineering for 55th Annual Grammy Awards

PITTSBURGH — Feb. 19, 2014 — NEP today announced that Hugh Healy, audio engineer for NEP Denali, has received a NAMM Technical Excellence & Creativity (TEC) Award for Outstanding Creative Achievement in the Remote Production/Recording or Broadcast category. Healy was honored for his role as audio engineering supervisor for the 55th Annual Grammy Awards.

Presented annually by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation at The NAMM Show, the TEC Awards are the foremost program recognizing the achievements of audio professionals. Healy and fellow audio engineers, Joel Singer and Mark Linett from Music Mix Mobile (M3), were nominated as a team for the award by Tom Holmes, lead production mixer for the 55th Annual Grammy Awards. NEP Denali provided mobile broadcast facilities and engineering support for the program.

“The NAMM TEC Award is a unique honor because it recognizes technical achievement, an area that tends to be more ‘behind the scenes’ in live entertainment production,” said Healy. “I was proud to serve with an outstanding team of audio professionals for the 55th Annual Grammy Awards, including my fellow award recipients Joel and Mark, who did an outstanding job of mixing the musical acts for the show.”

A well-known audio engineer, Healy specializes in providing audio engineering solutions for a broad range of live television productions with credits including the Academy Awards, Grammy Awards, and Academy of Country Music Awards. He has served as the primary audio engineer for NEP Denali for more than 14 years.

The 2014 NAB Show will see the introduction of FORK(TM) Xchange(TM) Suite 3.0, a major upgrade to the Web and iOS(R) application that provides instant access to content on FORK Production servers. Archive Bridge v1.0
