Harmonic Boosts Features and Functionality of Industry-Leading Spectrum Media Server Line

Software Release Yields Improvements Across Spectrum Line, Including ChannelPort(TM) Integrated Channel Playout System

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Feb. 11, 2014 — Harmonic (NASDAQ: HLIT), the worldwide leader in video delivery infrastructure, today announced sophisticated new playout and graphics capabilities for the company’s market-leading ChannelPort(TM) integrated channel playout system. The latest Spectrum(TM) software also enhances the complete Spectrum media server platform with augmented ingest, storage, and playout broadcast workflows.

“Spectrum 7.5 software introduces a series of high-value system enhancements that build on Spectrum systems’ unparalleled reliability, flexibility, form factor, and power usage advantages,” said Andy Warman, director, product management, production and playout, Harmonic. “With this major release, Harmonic continues to build on the industry-leading functionality and performance that keep Spectrum systems well ahead of the competition.”

Substantial functional gains for the ChannelPort system include options for supporting up to six live sources, which may include two key-and-fill pair inputs (one key-and-fill pair usable at a time) and HD and SD simulcast output. With these extended input options, ChannelPort becomes more flexible when dealing with complex video source needs and, at the same time, reduces the demand on upstream switcher/router control. The Spectrum 7.5 software release also provides audio downmixing, which ensures that the audio output — 5.1, stereo, or mono — matches the HD or SD output needs of the channel.

With this new software release, Onboard Playout Control (OPC) for ChannelPort and MediaPort(TM) has been enhanced with an interactive playlist mode that allows an operator to control ChannelPort channels while on-air. Operators can cut, copy, paste, and delete events/blocks; insert new primary and secondary events; and take, drop, or hold the next event in the playlist. The result is centralized playback monitoring with easier management and control that enable the operator to react quickly to schedule changes and unplanned events.

As part of its standard functionality, ChannelPort now also includes previously announced features for integrating rich graphics directly into the playout workflow, dynamic closed-caption file insertion, and an Enhanced Channel mode that enables dual DVE support and independent branding of simulcast SD and HD channels. Further enhancements to the Spectrum MediaPort video encoder/decoder include real-time SD and HD MPEG-2 ingest and playout for the MediaPort 7100 and 7600 models.

Spectrum 7.5 software also includes a number of core server enhancements. The new features begin with file-system improvements, including directory-based user-rights access and a key file-system security measure that enables more granular control over read, write, and delete access. Improvements to ancillary data management include a new WSS blanking feature that allows widescreen signaling to be stripped for ancillary data as needed and supports the insertion of SCTE-104 triggers during playout, which eliminates the cost and complexity of using external insertion devices downstream. In addition, the MediaStore(TM) 5000 storage array can now accommodate 1.2 TB 2.5-inch drives, a 33 percent gain in storage capacity compared with the previous version.

Harmonic’s line of market-leading broadcast and multiscreen solutions, including Spectrum ChannelPort, will be featured at Harmonic’s booth SU1210 during the 2014 NAB Show in Las Vegas, April 7-10. Further information about Harmonic and the company’s products is available at www.harmonicinc.com.

Bittree NAB 2014 Show Preview

At the 2014 NAB Show, Bittree will display its newest innovations in patchbays and patching solutions, each designed to help integrators and audio/video specialists achieve greater flexibility in rapidly changing media environments. Bittree highlights at this year’s show include a new line of patchbays featuring convenient monitoring and a new line of data feed-through panels.

Bittree Products on Display at the 2014 NAB Show:

Bittree Video Monitoring Patchbay
Bittree’s new 3 x 24 WECO video monitoring patchbay features an innovative design that adds an additional monitor row to the traditional two-row WECO patchbay without exceeding the 2-RU panel height. This new addition to Bittree’s video monitoring patchbay product line will be on display along with a 3 x 32 Mini-WECO monitoring patchbay, showcased at NAB 2013, as well as the one-row WECO and Mini-WECO monitor panels. Because engineers can now use the third row as a test point, this design has enabled new applications for patching — both in traditional broadcast studios and in industries ranging from aerospace and military to large content distribution centers. These patchbays provide an easy and safe way to check transmission paths without breaking the normal. Optimized for 3 Gb/s, the WECO and Mini-WECO monitoring patchbays are available in several sizes and configurations.

Bittree Data Feed-Through Panels
Also at the 2014 NAB Show, Bittree will showcase a new line of 24 wide, flush-mount data feed-through panels developed in response to the rapid growth of IT infrastructures in broadcast and A/V environments. These Cat6 feed-through panels are available in both shielded and unshielded versions. Front panels are silkscreen-numbered and can be supplied with optional designation strips. Bittree’s fiber-optic LC, SC, and ST 24-position panels now also have the same flush-mount design.

Company Quote:

“At this year’s NAB Show, we’re looking forward to showcasing Bittree’s newest innovations in high-quality, high-density patching equipment. As media enterprises migrate to next-generation production capabilities such as 4K, one of their biggest considerations is cost — especially in the realm of cabling and signal routing. By providing a centralized and convenient location for engineers to rapidly patch audio and video signals, Bittree’s solutions offer an extremely effective means of offsetting the additional cabling costs of advanced production.”
– Glenn Garrard, CEO, Bittree

The company offers an innovative line of audio, video, and data patchbays for use in broadcasting, postproduction, and pro A/V operations. This provides a solution to route bidirectional camera signals, including all embedded audio and telemetry control data, through the MediorNet fiber infrastructure. MediorNet’s network approach allows the free assignment of cameras to any base station or CCU within the network, providing unparalleled flexibility in setups and eliminating the need for rewiring when production needs change. The MN-C-OPT-GV-2 for MediorNet Compact fits into a MediorNet Compact expansion slot. It provides two Grass Valley ports that connect either to cameras or base stations. The MediorNet Grass Valley card supports all video and sync formats supported by Grass Valley LDK and LDX cameras.

MediorNet Now Supports Studer Consoles
Riedel will also present the MN-ST-AL-2, the company’s new MediorNet expansion card for Studer consoles. The MN-ST-AL-2 card provides two ports, each with redundant interfaces, for connecting Studer mixing consoles via the Studer A-Link protocol. In this way, the consoles become an integrated part of the entire signal distribution infrastructure. Users can gain up to 384 channels per connection and realize significant cost savings in cabling and maintenance while benefitting from MediorNet’s unparalleled flexibility and signal quality. Routing of the audio stream is handled by the user-friendly MediorWorks control and management software via drag-and-drop programming, which makes last-minute changes easy and intuitive. Additional routing adjustments can be performed via Pro-Bel commands or the new EMBER+ remote control protocol in MediorNet.

One MediorNet Modular frame equipped with A-Link interface cards becomes a cost-efficient audio router with 4,608 inputs and outputs in just two rack units. The card supports all Studer Vista 5 and Vista 9 consoles, as well as OnAir 3000 consoles.

RockNet Console Interfaces for SSL, Soundcraft Si, Studer, and Yamaha
Riedel provides RockNet expansion solutions with interface cards for Solid State Logic (SSL), Soundcraft, Studer, and Yamaha consoles. Next-generation firmware for the RockNet RN.334.MD MADI interface makes SSL mixing consoles an integrated part of the Riedel RockNet digital audio network, with complete remote control functionality over all gains and the flexibility of RockNet’s renowned independent gain feature. As a result, several mixing consoles can operate with the same mic preamps without affecting one another — a capability that greatly simplifies multiconsole and recording setups. Riedel’s RN.344.SI card enables integration with any Soundcraft Si Compact console, supporting 32 inputs and 32 outputs to the RockNet system. The interface enables remote control of any RockNet mic preamp and also offers the benefit of RockNet’s independent gain feature. The RN.343.VI card ensures compatibility with select Soundcraft and Studer consoles while the RN.341.MY works with select Yamaha consoles and host devices.
