Nexidia QC(TM) v2.1
At the 2014 NAB Show, Nexidia will unveil Nexidia QC(TM) v2.1, the latest release of its software tool to automate the QC of closed captions, video description, and languages for broadcast and IP workflows. With Nexidia QC, quality control and compliance processes that are currently done manually become automated, saving significant time and operating costs and helping to avoid costly mistakes and potential fines. In addition to the plugin that is now shipping with AmberFin’s Unified Quality Control solution (UQC), version 2.1 integrates with the Telestream Vantage broadcast automation workflow so that Vantage users can access Nexidia QC directly from the Vantage GUI. Version 2.1 also features enhanced job reporting and automated caption retiming, which retimes live captions for subsequent use and frame-rate conversion.

Nexidia Dialogue Search v1.5
Visitors to Nexidia’s booth at the 2014 NAB Show will be introduced to Nexidia Dialogue Search v1.5, the new version of Nexidia’s tool that searches for any spoken word or phrase across workgroups or massive media libraries in seconds. Dialogue Search relies on Nexidia’s patented phonetic search technology to enable independent search of any other metadata such as logging, transcription, and/or captions. Version 1.5 includes advanced metadata search and filtering so users can leverage any existing metadata, in combination with the dialogue, to further refine and improve search.

Dialogue Search v1.5 includes important integrations with some of the industry’s leading media asset management (MAM) and metadata management systems. IPV Ltd. has integrated Dialogue Search into the IPV Curator MAM so Dialogue Search capabilities are incorporated into the Curator search experience. Nexidia has also integrated Dialogue Search with media and production asset management systems from Dalet and Squarebox Systems’s CatDV.

Bittree Data Feed-Through Panels
Also at the 2014 NAB Show, Bittree will showcase a new line of 24 wide, flush-mount data feed-through panels developed in response to the rapid growth of IT infrastructures in broadcast and A/V environments. These Cat6 feed-through panels are available in both shielded and unshielded versions. Front panels are silkscreen-numbered and can be supplied with optional designation strips. Bittree’s fiber-optic LC, SC, and ST 24-position panels now also have the same flush-mount design.

Riedel will also present the MN-ST-AL-2, the company’s new MediorNet expansion card for Studer consoles. The MN-ST-AL-2 card provides two ports, each with redundant interfaces, for connecting Studer mixing consoles via the Studer A-Link protocol. In this way, the consoles become an integrated part of the entire signal distribution infrastructure. Users can gain up to 384 channels per connection and realize significant cost savings in cabling and maintenance while benefitting from MediorNet’s unparalleled flexibility and signal quality. Routing of the audio stream is handled by the user-friendly MediorWorks control and management software via drag-and-drop programming, which makes last-minute changes easy and intuitive. (NYSE MKT:BDR) and Monroe Electronics have teamed up to create a powerful emergency alert information and distribution platform for the campus environment — whether it be university, government, enterprise, retail or stadium — without requiring a set-top box (STB). Monroe Electronics’ One-Net(TM) SE emergency alert system (EAS) has been seamlessly integrated with the EQAM-420B EdgeQAM with EAS from Blonder Tongue, allowing cable operators to deliver customized, local emergency alert information to viewers in a manner that is easy, cost-effective, and scalable. The EQAM-420B with EAS will be demonstrated at NCTC WEC 2014, Feb. 17-18 in Tampa, Fla. at the Monroe Electronics’ booth 304 and by R.L. Drake, a Blonder Tongue subsidiary, at booth 513.

“Blonder Tongue and Monroe Electronics have come together to develop the optimum management and video distribution platform for emergency alert information,” said Emily Nikoo, executive vice president of Blonder Tongue. “While the EQAM-420B with EAS supports a broad range of applications, it is perfect for the campus environment based on the need to deliver timely, accurate emergency alert information to all viewing locations, without the need for set-top boxes.”

After receiving emergency alert information from national, local, and private agencies, Monroe Electronics’ One-Net SE generates a customized EAS message and transmits the information to the EQAM-420B with EAS for distribution into the television system. The EQAM-420B with EAS features a dual Gigabit Ethernet input and a QAM coaxial output with a separate Ethernet management port, simplifying network connections. The EdgeQAM aggregates multiple SD and HD programs received in IP format and delivers them over a standard coaxial distribution network. Standard programming is replaced with full-screen text, video, and accompanying audio to ensure an impactful reception on the viewer. Since no STBs are needed at viewing locations, it’s easy to reach every viewer at the lowest possible cost.

Based on a modular design, the EQAM-420B with EAS can be scaled to support anywhere between one to hundreds of channels, providing operators with a flexible, cost-effective solution that is perfect for a wide variety of markets, including education, enterprise, healthcare, and hospitality. An intuitive Web-based interface simplifies setup and operation, lowering the learning curve for operators and eliminating the need for IT support. Remote monitoring and control can be performed via a comprehensive user interface that is compatible with standard Web browsers.

Controlled by a simple web browser interface, the Monroe Electronics’ One-Net SE is FCC-certified and IPAWS conformant, ensuring EAS messages are properly formatted and understood by the viewing audience. Optional AM/FM/NOAA internal receivers allow radio inputs for monitoring any standard over-the-air EAS alerts. Using tiered security enables multiple, simultaneous users, and a unique text-to-speech functionality automatically creates a consistent voice to accompany text messages, saving time and eliminating errors.

Blonder Tongue’s next-generation EQAM-420B with EAS supports up to 64 MPEG-2/H.264 single program transport streams (SPTS) or 16 multi-program transport streams (MPTS). Each program can maintain up to one video and two audio elementary streams. The IGMPv3-capable solution can be configured with one to four modules, each with four adjacent QAM channels for a total of 16 QAM channels (40 dBmV). PMT and PID values are passed through without changes to ensure accurate program information. The EdgeQAM solution also features a soft, IP-enabled EAS trigger and SNMPv2 support for product and network management.

At the 2014 NAB Show, Visionary Solutions will demonstrate PackeTV(R), a powerful new IP video network and asset management solution. Through PackeTV, organizations can easily and cost-effectively deliver high-quality HD and SD, MPEG-2/H.264 video content to TVs, set-top boxes (STBs), PCs, tablets, smartphones, and other IP-connected devices across a wide range of networks, including LAN, WAN, WiFi, cellular, and the public Internet.

The open-standard solution is compatible with a wide range of equipment, including Visionary Solutions encoders and decoders, providing customers with the complete IPTV ecosystem. PackeTV features the same modular architecture as the company’s encoder and decoder product lines, enabling customers to upgrade as their budget permits without purchasing new hardware. This modular flexibility lowers the base price of the equipment by allowing customers to purchase only the features they need at the moment and upgrading the software as requirements change.

The PackeTV platform can quickly and easily be deployed in virtually any IT environment, including the education, enterprise, entertainment, government, healthcare, hospitality, and house of worship markets. Video assets are fully protected via AES 256/128-bit encryption, and access can be controlled right down to the individual user and group level through seamless integration with Microsoft Active Directory.

The following modular components of PackeTV will be on display at the show:
- PackeTV Portal: A powerful browser-based administration interface with a familiar look and feel. Provides administrators with total control over the PackeTV system, including user and group permissions and dynamic video asset creation, management, protection, and distribution.
- PackeTV Player: A browser-based, no-install client that provides CPU-efficient, high-quality playback of live, scheduled, and on-demand streams up to full HD (1920 x 1080p60). Powerful features, such as a de-interlacing engine for smooth viewing of high-motion content and broadcast as well as command and control monitoring, enhance the viewing experience.
- PackeTV Mobile Player: An integrated player for iPhones(R), iPads(R), Android” tablets, and smartphones that is controlled by a PackeTV administrator, providing user authentication and full channel guide synchronization.
- PackeTV VOD and NDVR Servers: Enables users and administrators to record live video and upload prerecorded content for on-demand playback. The system offers scheduled recording and continuous archiving for monitoring and time-shift applications. Authorized users may record channels on local storage for private use on an immediate or scheduled basis.
- PackeTV STB Module: Integrates commercial IP set-top boxes into the PackeTV ecosystem so the entire PackeTV channel lineup can be viewed on HD or SD TV monitors secured by AES 256/128-bit encryption and access control. A powerful graphical interface and EPG make it easy to view live and on-demand content and record scheduled programming.
- PackeTV EPG: An intuitive guide for scheduled programs is created based on data sourced from the broadcaster. The guide is displayed via an easy-to-read user interface.

PBS Technology Conference to Offer IEEE BTS ‘Bridging the Gap’ Training Course

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Feb. 5, 2014 — The IEEE Broadcast Technology Society (BTS) today announced that its “Bridging the Gap” technical training program, which is designed to bridge the knowledge gap between IT technologists and video specialists, will be offered at this year’s PBS Technology Conference (TechCon), a premier annual gathering for broadcast engineers, information technology and traffic professionals, general managers, and senior executives within the public television field.

“Bridging the Gap” ensures that the chief and senior engineers responsible for designing, upgrading, and maintaining broadcast facilities are up to speed on next-generation technologies and workflows. A one-day, condensed version of the training program will take place during PBS’ TechCon on April 2 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Attendees in prior years have indicated that the course was tremendous in terms of both content and value. IEEE continuing education credits are available to those who complete the seminar.

“TechCon provides broadcasters with a forum for education, professional development, networking, and exposure to new ideas and technologies. As such, it is an ideal venue for the IEEE BTS ‘Bridging the Gap’ training course,” said Kevin Ruppenthal, manager, technology strategy at PBS. “As more broadcasters transition to file-based workflows, it’s important that they’re cross-trained in IT and broadcast technologies. ‘Bridging the Gap’ will help the broadcast community become more proficient in both concepts to deliver the best possible quality of service to viewers.

The “Bridging the Gap” technical training course is open to the public, regardless of whether individuals are attending the PBS TechCon. Cost for the seminar is $150. Online registration is now open and can be accessed at http://www.pbstechconference.org/registration/. Space is limited, so attendees are encouraged to register by Feb. 21.

The “Bridging the Gap” training course at PBS TechCon will be taught by well-known broadcast industry experts John Luff and Wes Simpson. Professionals taking the course will walk away with a deeper understanding of a wide range of current and emerging technologies used in broadcast facilities, including baseband digital video transport, data networking for broadcast facilities, metadata, loudness, monitoring, and video compression, enabling them to more efficiently resolve day-to-day issues. Attendees receive a printed copy of the course materials featuring detailed diagrams and tables for future reference.

The IEEE BTS is also accepting hosts for future training sessions. The two-day seminars accommodate 30 or more students at a cost of $395 per attendee. Sessions can be hosted privately by a broadcast organization or can be open to the public. Host organizations may be entitled to receive a discount on student tuition, and IEEE BTS members receive a 5 percent discount toward tuition.

Biamp Systems Announces New Paging Input Options and Adaptors for VoIP and Analog Paging System

Vocia(R) 1.6 delivers new functionality and three new devices to public address and voice evacuation system

AMSTERDAM, ISE 2014 — Feb. 5, 2014 — Biamp Systems, a leading provider of innovative, networked media systems, today announced the launch of Vocia(R) 1.6, a significant addition to the company’s networked public address and voice evacuation system. Vocia 1.6 provides three new hardware devices — the eight-channel Vocia Input (VI-8) for analog and digital paging inputs, the VoIP-1 telephone-paging adaptor, and the POTS-1 analog telephone-paging adaptor. A large number of new features and enhancements in Vocia 1.6 software include impedance monitoring for the Vocia VA-8600 amplifier, support for unicast CobraNet(R) local inputs, and a dry contact control input mode for Vocia Life Safety Interface (LSI-16e), VI-8, and Vocia General Purpose I/O (GPIO-1) devices.

“Vocia 1.6 introduces new components and features to extend our industry-leading platform to an even broader range of installations of varying sizes, while bringing our Vocia and Tesira platforms closer together as an integrated solution for flexible, multi-functional environments,” said Graeme Harrison, Executive Vice President of Marketing, Biamp Systems. “Vocia 1.6 delivers the flexibility within a system to integrate paging directly with both VoIP and analog telephone systems.”

Supporting up to eight analog or CobraNet paging audio inputs, the new Vocia VI-8 input device rapidly routes signals to any assigned page code. Expanding the interoperability of the Biamp(R) product line, the VI-8 accepts paging audio inputs from Audia(R) and Tesira(R) systems, and can be used in conjunction with monitored Vocia GPIO-1 devices for fire panel supervision and priority for emergency pages. Designed to interface with existing paging stations, the VI-8 is ideal for large venues such as airports, convention centers, and healthcare campuses.

The Vocia VoIP-1 is a simple VoIP telephone-paging adapter, and the POTS-1 is an analog telephone-paging adapter. Both are ideal for installations in smaller hospitals and industrial environments, or those that require a simple VoIP or POTS extension capability. Both the VoIP-1 and POTS-1 enable live paging as well as store and forward to assigned page codes within any Vocia installation. The units support two lines with an option to support four lines by ordering the units with an expansion card.

In addition to Vocia’s current End of Line (ELD-1) device, Vocia 1.6 provides the VA-8600 amplifier as an additional way to monitor speaker line health via impedance monitoring. This makes Vocia ideal for installations in which the speaker infrastructure is already in place. Additionally, Unicast CobraNet inputs from both Audia and Tesira systems can be directly routed to Vocia amplifiers, allowing an increased number of background sources to access any one area without affecting the number of simultaneous pages that are possible.

Biamp Systems Makes AVB Connectivity Smarter and Available to Applications of All Sizes

Tesira(R) 2.0 delivers preconfigured products for greater simplicity and increased flexibility for everyday and enterprise-level audio

AMSTERDAM, ISE 2014 — Feb. 4, 2014 — Biamp Systems, a leading provider of innovative, networked media systems, today announced the launch of Tesira(R) 2.0, the latest version of the company’s flagship family of digital signal processor (DSP)-based media systems. The centerpiece of Tesira 2.0 is TesiraFORTÉ, an all-new series of audio processors that extend Audio Video Bridging (AVB) to application-specific settings. TesiraFORTÉ consists of eight preconfigured models (four AVB models and four non-AVB models) designed to bring greater simplicity and more options to today’s conferencing, telephony, and VoIP environments.

Also shipping with Tesira 2.0 is Biamp’s new Dante(TM)-enabled DAN-1 digital server networking card, which, like its current CobraNet(R) card, functions as a gateway interface to support 64×64 channels of Dante networked audio. The DAN-1 card provides system integrators with a Dante digital transport within Tesira media systems. While the Tesira platform operates over AVB, with the addition of the DAN-1 card, customers will have the flexibility of integrating with different system types. The DAN-1 can also be used alongside AVB and/or CobraNet in the same Tesira SERVER or SERVER-IO.

In addition, Tesira 2.0 includes new firmware and software that enable two Tesira SERVERs to act as a redundant pair — with the secondary Tesira SERVER providing a mirrored backup to prevent any interruption in service in case of failure in the primary SERVER.
