Virtual Key Panel App for Artist Intercom System
Riedel’s Artist virtual key panels enable the use of smartphones and tablets (iOS, OS X(R), and Android) as control panels in combination with any Artist digital matrix intercom system. These hand-held devices can then provide the same functionality as full-featured, 12-key Artist control panels. The user operates the virtual control panel with the device’s touch-screen interface, which can be configured via Riedel’s Director software.

Drake’s DSE 2 PLUS Dual Multiplexing Encoder Now Shipping

With a Single Platform for Encoding and QAM Multiplexing, the DSE 2 PLUS Dramatically Simplifies HD Video Distribution for a Wide Range of Applications

MIAMISBURG, Ohio — May 12, 2014 — R.L. Drake today announced that its DSE 2 PLUS dual multiplexing encoder is now shipping. By combining encoding and QAM modulation capabilities within a single stand-alone unit, the DSE 2 PLUS dramatically simplifies HD video distribution. Specifically designed to support digital signage applications, the DSE 2 PLUS also brings value to a variety of other applications within the house of worship, education, healthcare, government, and hospitality markets. The encoder will be on display in the Drake booth N1763 at InfoComm 2014, June 18-20 in Las Vegas.

The DSE 2 PLUS digitally encodes two uncompressed HDMI, high-resolution component video or VGA inputs to MPEG-2 or MPEG-4/H.264, and then uses an internal multiplexing QAM modulator and low-noise upconverter to enable distribution of two HD programs over existing legacy fiber and coaxial networks. Leveraging the bandwidth savings provided by the multiplexing capability of the DSE 2 PLUS, users can deliver twice as much content at half the bandwidth. This enables users to tap into existing networks of digital HD displays to provide informational video, revenue-generating advertising, or promotional content in a vibrant high- definition format while conserving valuable bandwidth on the network.

Harnessing the technology and engineering expertise behind the proven Drake DSE24 digital signage encoder, the Drake DSE 2 PLUS offers superior reliability and consistent performance. The dual multiplexing encoder receives high-resolution component video, VGA, or HDMI from two separate sources and encodes these inputs to MPEG-2 or MPEG-4/H.264 at resolutions of up to 1080i. Audio is encoded to Dolby(R) Digital or the MPEG-1 Audio Layer II compression format. Support for closed-captioning assures the continued accessibility of captioned content.

The encoder’s GUI-based remote network control and monitoring gives users the option of configuring and adjusting parameters either via an Ethernet connection or by directly connecting a laptop to the Ethernet port on site. While the system is offered as a rack-mount unit, a desktop configuration is also available as an option.

With Visualizer, engineers are able to access many different views within a single intelligent window system, which lets them select the view combinations they need. Visualizer automatically resizes and aligns windows to maximize legibility and referencing information across screens. IRVINE, Calif. — May 7, 2014 — Sonnet Technologies today announced that well-known front-of-house (FOH) engineers Brad Madix and Greg Price have standardized on Sonnet’s Echo(TM) Express III and xMac(TM) mini Server Thunderbolt(TM)-to-PCIe(R) 2.0 expansion systems for their new business venture, Diablo Digital Inc. Madix and Price are using the Sonnet systems in combination with the Apple(R) Mac(R) mini to create highly powerful, portable, scalable, and yet very affordable rackmount solutions for on-location audio recording workflows.

Both Madix and Price have extensive FOH résumés dating back to the 1970s, mixing sound for some of the biggest names in rock music. Madix has worked with Rush, Van Halen, Shakira, Def Leppard, and many more, and Price has worked with Black Sabbath, ZZ Top, Kiss, and Aerosmith, among others. For several years, both had been working on separate paths to develop a portable, rackmount system that would integrate all necessary interfaces and peripherals for on-location music recording. Aside from being the source of live recording products, live multitrack recordings provide FOH engineers an invaluable tool for perfecting the mix on-location and making the most of limited rehearsal time at each venue.

While earlier efforts included the less portable and more expensive Mac Pro(R) computer, Madix and Price realized they could improve on the concept by leveraging the low cost and small footprint of the Mac mini. Working together, they built a new solution around Sonnet’s xMac mini Server, a Thunderbolt-to-PCIe 2.0 expansion system and 1U rackmount enclosure that securely holds the Mac mini in place.

“With its Thunderbolt connectivity and onboard storage of up to 2TB, the Mac mini can provide the server capabilities and computing power of a box many times larger, but at a cost many times lower,” said Madix. “Combined with the right expansion systems and peripherals, the Mac mini can be turned into a high-power multitrack recording system for live shows of any size. The xMac mini Server bridges the gap between the Mac Pro’s extensibility and the Mac mini’s portability and affordability, enabling us to rackmount a Mac mini where it can be easily cabled and extended with Thunderbolt connectivity.”

Madix added, “I recently ran a 91-track, two-plus-hour stress test using the xMac mini Server and an Avid HD Native card connected to an Avid Omni interface. I was working in Pro Tools|HD with hundreds of plug-ins instantiated. Amazingly, the Mac mini handled it all with no issues and only 57 percent of CPU utilization.”

The xMac mini Server increases the Mac mini’s functionality by connecting two PCIe 2.0 expansion slots to the computer’s Thunderbolt port, with an additional port on the chassis for daisy-chaining to other Thunderbolt devices. Panel-mount cables inside the enclosure extend the Mac mini interfaces to the outside of the xMac Mini Server enclosure, enabling quick connection of USB 3.0, HDMI, and Gigabit Ethernet cables without the need to access the computer. Diablo Digital’s custom mixing and recording system includes the Avid Pro Tools|HD audio recording and editing software running on the Mac mini, with the xMac mini Server housing a Pro Tools|HD Native PCIe card for interfacing with the VENUE desk. A Sonnet Tempo(TM) SSD PCIe storage card in the second slot serves as a high-speed, reliable record drive. This means the new recording system is capable of capturing 64 tracks of HD audio content, more than enough for most musical acts.

For larger productions, the Diablo Digital team is including Sonnet’s Echo Express III-R 2U rackmount Thunderbolt 2-to-PCIe card expansion chassis with the Sonnet RackMac(TM) mini rackmount enclosure for the Mac mini. The Avid-qualified Echo Express III-R offers phenomenal speed through support of 20 Gb/sec Thunderbolt 2 technology, and with a mounting depth of only 16 inches, provides the ideal component for interfacing the Pro Tools|HDX cards with the Mac mini.

“Adding the Echo Express III-R, additional Avid cards, and built-in mobile rack storage enables us to record up to 128 tracks simultaneously, which means we can deliver a solution with the horsepower for even the most elaborate productions — and still at a cost that’s less than our original Mac Pro-based system,” Price said. “Thanks to the possibilities afforded by the Sonnet Technologies and Avid gear working with the Mac mini, we saw an opportunity to build a business around providing Pro Tools recording systems to musical acts of all sizes. We really believe these systems will change the landscape of the music business.”

In the first quarter of this year alone, Diablo Digital has already supplied systems for the Rolling Stones, Kanye West/Jay Z, Eric Clapton, Justin Timberlake, Dierks Bentley, Black Sabbath, and other large tours, as well as for many smaller, budget-conscience acts.

SMPTE at the 2014 NAB Show

SMPTE has accomplished much over the past 12 months, with significant achievements in the three pillars of the Society: membership, education, and standards. While the Society was able to highlight progress in standards areas including ultra high-definition, cinema sound and immersive audio, and integration of information technology into the industry, SMPTE also showcased its ongoing work to provide both members and nonmembers with unique opportunities to engage with other professionals in discussion of the technical advances and business strategies driving the industry forward.

The 2014 NAB Show’s Technology Summit on Cinema: The Future of Motion Imaging and Sound (TSC), produced in partnership with SMPTE, featured visionary technology innovators and acclaimed creatives from the realm of motion pictures. The fifth annual Student Ice Cream Social was also a draw, and word of mouth and social media posts brought a huge crowd of students to the SMPTE booth.

Conference Session: 2014 NAB Show’s Technology Summit on Cinema
The 2014 NAB Show’s Technology Summit on Cinema: The Future of Motion Imaging and Sound (TSC), produced in partnership with SMPTE, provided an in-depth global view of the current state and future of filmmaking innovation. Sessions touched on the human vision system and the potential impact of improved motion images, and TSC speakers highlighted the many ways in which new technologies are being used to enhance storytelling. Attendees had the opportunity to see a live demonstration of the latest laser-illuminated projector technology, as well as examples of the effect of high dynamic range on the cinema experience. The latter proved to be one of the hottest topics during the 2014 NAB Show.

One of the most anticipated sessions of the TSC, the “Gravity Gravitas” panel brought together Academy Award(R)-winning cinematographer Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki, supervising sound editor Skip Lievsay, colorist Steven J. Scott, and CG supervisor Harry Bardak, with David Cohen, senior technology editor for Variety acting as the moderator. Focusing on the technical innovations that enabled the movie “Gravity,” the panel discussed how technicians push the envelope by using innovative, creative tools, which results in an audiovisual experience that enhances storytelling and shapes the future of cinematography.

During his keynote to a packed house, industry expert and technical innovator Chris Cookson envisioned a future in which, rather than acquiring images, storytellers instead create images based on acquired models and data. The possibility of using virtual environments to achieve an immersive experience was just one of the future advances Cookson addressed.

In another popular keynote, Elizabeth Daley, dean at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinema Arts, discussed the challenge of educators as the art of cinema continues to evolve. She noted that, with technology changing, educating students at the university level has become challenging, and teaching fundamental concept is to teach students to adjust their skill sets to embrace innovations.

SMPTE Activity and Announcements
SMPTE Executive Director Barbara Lange announced the availability of three SMPTE Technology Committee Study Group reports on the SMPTE website at www.smpte.org/standards/reports. The reports include “Cinema B-Chain and Distribution,” the findings of the study group on immersive audio systems; “Beyond the Digital Conversion: The Integration of Information Technology and Professional Media”; and the report of the UHDTV ecosystem study group.

Lange highlighted SMPTE’s expanded educational offerings, including new webcasts for SMPTE executive members and a series focused on emerging technologies that complements the Society’s established educational and standards update webcasts. She also directed delegates to the SMPTE Booth, where they could try the new SMPTE mobile app for iOS, Android, and Kindle systems, in addition to a Web-based version for other operating systems.

Looking ahead, SMPTE Education Vice President Pat Griffis discussed the upcoming Entertainment Technology in the Internet Age Conference (ETIA 2014) at Stanford University in June and announced that The SMPTE Forum 2015, produced in collaboration with Fernseh- und Kinotechnische Gesellschaft e.V. (FKTG), will take place in Berlin on May 7-8, 2015.

SMPTE Members Honored at 2014 NAB Show
Ann Marie Rohaly, director of accessibility, policy, and standards for Microsoft’s Corporate Accessibility Group, has been named one of TVNewsCheck’s 2014 Technology Women to Watch. She received the award during TVNewsCheck’s Women in Technology Awards presentation at the 2014 NAB Show. SMPTE Executive Vice President Robert Seidel of CBS received a 2014 NAB Engineering Achievement Award. Ericsson, a SMPTE Platinum Level Sustaining member, was recognized with one of the television industry’s highest honors, the NAB Technology Innovation Award, for his pioneering work in Ultra High Definition TV (UHDTV) 4K. SMPTE member Thomas Edwards of Fox Networks received the NAB Best Paper Award.

SMPTE Student Support: Ice Cream Social and Sponsored Memberships
About 75 students from colleges and universities throughout the world flocked to the SMPTE booth to enjoy ice cream while hearing SMPTE members discuss their work in sound, digital cinema, cameras, broadcasting, and manufacturing. SMPTE Executive Director Barbara Lange addressed the group and informed the students about the Louis F. Wolf Memorial Scholarship and Student Paper Award opportunities.

Lange also invited nonmember students to join SMPTE and receive their first year of membership free through the Student Membership Challenge. Through a challenge grant established in 2012 by William Miller, SMPTE membership director and a SMPTE governor for the New York region, the Society has been able to fund 500 student memberships.

Riedel Communications Expands Marketing and Communications Team With New Assignments
