SMPTE Announces Launch of New Pittsburgh Section

New Section Will Bring New Resources and Opportunities to SMPTE Members in Increasingly Active Northeast Hub

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — July 8, 2014 — The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers(R) (SMPTE(R)), the worldwide leader in motion-imaging standards and education for the communications, media, entertainment, and technology industries, today announced the formation of a new SMPTE Section in Pittsburgh. The new Section will offer existing and potential SMPTE members in the Pittsburgh area valuable educational programs, technical expertise, and networking opportunities. The formation of the group was spearheaded by local SMPTE Fellows George Hoover, CTO at NEP; John Luff, television technology consultant at HD Consulting; and Diversified Systems CTO Karl Paulsen.

“George, John, and Karl did tremendous work to make the SMPTE Pittsburgh Section a reality, and the success of their initiative reflects the Society’s growing momentum and activity in the Pittsburgh area,” said SMPTE Executive Director Barbara Lange. “This really was an effort born in the grassroots of SMPTE membership, and it demonstrates our members’ genuine enthusiasm for taking advantage of educational programs and their interest in becoming more involved in creating the standards that shape our industry.”

The launch of the SMPTE Pittsburgh Section brings the total of local Sections to 28 worldwide. Each year, these groups collectively host more than 200 meetings, tutorials, and workshops. While these events give members access to a broad variety of SMPTE resources, they also enable each Section to tailor programming to address the technical and business concerns of particular interest in the region.

Riedel Provides A/V, Data, and Communications Solution for 2014 Red Bull Air Race World Championships

WUPPERTAL, Germany — July 1, 2014 — Riedel Communications, a leading provider of real-time video, audio, data, and communications networks, today announced that the company’s equipment is enabling flexible and reliable signal transport and communications for the Red Bull Air Race World Championship season that started Feb. 28 in Abu Dhabi. The series continued on to Rovinj, Croatia on April 12 and then to Putrajaya, Malaysia on May 18, and makes several more stops before finishing in China in November. For the first three races, the state-of-the-art solution supplied by Riedel not only supported wired and wireless communications among the more than 300 people — from pilots to security to referees — involved in the race, but also facilitated distribution of video and audio for production of both the live show and the international broadcast and Web stream.

The Red Bull Air Race World Championship is renowned as the fastest and most exhilarating motorsport series on the planet, and it has become a visual spectacle unlike any other. A combination of high speed, low altitude, and extreme maneuverability make it only accessible to the world’s most exceptional pilots, who this year will compete in eight races across the globe for the title of 2014 Red Bull Air Race World Champion. During each race, pilots navigate an aerial racetrack featuring air-filled pylons in the fastest possible time, incurring as few penalties as possible.

For this remarkable event, Riedel engineers built a signal distribution infrastructure for video, audio, communications, and data with the MediorNet real-time media network comprising seven MediorNet Compact frames and three MediorNet Modular frames. Technicians interfaced audio signals via MADI and Riedel’s RockNet digital audio network solution in combination with MediorNet to integrate the event’s main mixing console, located in the OB van that provided the big-screen mix for the live audience. Riedel also supplied the wireless video links and HD cameras for the racing planes’ onboard cameras, thus enabling stunning pictures to be delivered from the pilots’ perspectives.

Using MediorNet as a backbone, a Riedel Artist digital matrix intercom served as the event communications infrastructure. This intercom system, made up of two Artist frames equipped with MADI cards and 20 control panels, was integrated seamlessly with Riedel’s digital trunked radio (TETRA) installation. Two TETRA base stations supported 300 handheld radios to assure full event coverage, and two of Riedel’s RiFace universal radio interfaces allowed another 24 analog radios to be added to the mix. To bridge the distance between the race airport and the event site, Riedel set up a broadband link connecting the two via trunking over IP.

Wohler Signs on to Digital Production Partnership Compliance Program

SAN FRANCISCO — June 26, 2014 – Wohler Technologies today announced that it is participating in the new compliance program created by the Digital Production Partnership (DPP), an industry collaboration that provides information and shares best practices to help producers and broadcasters maximize the potential of digital production. The DPP Compliance Program and subsequent guidelines are intended to help the industry identify trusted products for DPP standards across the U.K. and to speed up the successful implementation of the digital delivery process by ensuring files are compliant with DPP AS-11.

DTV America Begins Rollout of Digital Alert Systems’ DASDEC EAS/CAP Units at Low-Power TV Sites

LYNDONVILLE, N.Y. — June 26, 2014 – Digital Alert Systems (DAS), a division of Monroe Electronics, today announced that DTV America is deploying DASDEC-II emergency messaging platforms at low-power TV (LPTV) sites across the United States. DTV America holds LPTV licenses in 80 markets, and it is rolling out the DAS units to realize technically advanced EAS/CAP capabilities while ensuring reliable centralized control of EAS units installed across DTV America sites.

“We are very happy with the performance of the DAS boxes, which offer a remarkably high degree of sophistication for LPTV operations, as well as the exceptionally proactive support we’ve received from the company,” said Kristina Bruni, vice president, compliance and engineering at DTV America. “This product is a perfect fit for our requirements, and because DAS already had proved the MPEG capabilities of the system and tested it thoroughly with our preferred multiplexer, installation and operation wound up being plug-and-play. After finding that the devices first installed in its initial EAS/CAP deployments could neither provide an MPEG output nor support IP-based message aggregation, DTV America shifted gears and sought out a new EAS/CAP solution. The company then evaluated, purchased, and began deploying the DASDEC-II LPTV decoder with built-in radios (DASLPTVR) and integrated MPEG encoding online, and has plans for integrating this technology in multiple markets through 2015.

The network-centric DASLPTVR integrates three key features — monitoring radios, EAS decoder, and CAP decoder — into a single 2 RU box with a with a simple, secure browser-based interface and an architecture that supports simultaneous monitoring and user access with tiered security. The system’s internal triple tri-band (AM/FM/WX) high-performance receivers are fully adjustable via the web-browser user interface, and its optional four independent Ethernet ports enhance network performance by splitting network traffic among the ports. By presenting EAS text and audio as an MPEG stream for direct insertion into digital broadcast streams, the internal MPEG encoding option saves DTV America and others money and reduces the complexity of EAS/CAP compliance operations.
