Blonder Tongue Appoints Walt Davis as Senior Director of Product Management and Technical Services

OLD BRIDGE, N.J. — June 9, 2014 — Blonder Tongue Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE MKT:BDR) today announced that it has appointed Walt Davis as senior director of product management and technical services. Davis will be responsible for managing product implementation and technical support of the company’s next-generation digital video solutions.

Prior to SES, Davis was the product manager for Cavalier Telephone’s MPEG-4 IPTV service in Richmond, Virginia. Davis has a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Drexel University in Philadelphia, and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland.

John Stanley Productions Uses Forscene for Ad Production

LONDON — June 4, 2014 – Forbidden Technologies plc (AIM: FBT), the AIM-quoted owner and developer of the market-leading cloud video platform Forscene, announced today that John Stanley Productions used Forscene in its workflow to produce television and Internet ads for Boots No7 Protect and Perfect Anti-Ageing Serums, marking the first time Forscene has been used in the production of a commercial.

“The ratio of filming to finished product on this project was enormous. The challenge was how to tell the story in just a minute when we had enough material for an hour-long programme. That meant culling a lot of material in a hurry,” said Michelle Langer, executive producer at John Stanley Productions. “One of our producers had used Forscene before and was impressed with the ability to view and select clips independently of the editor. Forscene was an invaluable tool for enabling efficient communications between the crew on a shoot and the producer and editor in the edit suite at The Farm.”

John Stanley Productions had three crews working throughout the country, simultaneously filming eight women who were living without mirrors for four weeks while they tested the product to see the difference it made to their lines and wrinkles. Every other day they sent drives back to The Farm to be ingested. As each day’s footage was copied to The Farm’s media storage, proxies were automatically uploaded to JSP’s Forscene account — so that the rushes were immediately available to be viewed by Rachel Viner, senior producer. From that footage, the company produced a 60-second TV ad, a 40-second TV ad, and a three-minute online version that all told the story of the women’s experiences.

Before the main edit block, producers and editors had one day a week in an edit suite to cut weekly highlights. Having access to the media in Forscene made it possible to preselect the clips before edit day, making the time in the edit suite much more productive.

“Those weekly edits would have been a much longer process if the editor and producer had to wait until they were in the edit suite to view all the rushes from the three directors, or if they had been working from paper edits,” Langer said. “Forscene made the entire process run more smoothly and efficiently.”

Forscene also improved efficiency in the final edit by allowing the producer to view and select alternative clips whilst the editor was working on the master cut.

“In this production a lot of footage had to be condensed into just a minute of ad time. This plays well to Forscene’s ability to provide access to rushes in an efficient and cost effective way to help reduce edit time and costs,” said Greg Hirst, business development director, Forbidden Technologies plc. “As previous Forscene users, the team at John Stanley Productions could immediately see how Forscene could be an effective tool for this unique requirement.”

Wohler Names Steve Farmer Director of Engineering

In his first professional role, he rose to the position of senior design engineer at Northern Telecom Defence Systems Division, where he developed key technologies and products in the field of fiber optics and secure and cryptographic communications systems.

Farmer subsequently joined the GEC-Marconi Future Systems Laboratory as a principal engineer and then moved on to Drake Electronics in the broadcast sector, developing communications and talkback systems for studios and outside broadcast facilities. When Drake was acquired by the Vitec Group in 1998, he moved from the role of engineering manager to that of director of engineering for both Drake and Clear-Com in the Bay Area. As his role evolved, Farmer also participated in business development, acquisitions, change management, and product management.

In 2005, he founded Claratech Limited, which later acquired both BAL Broadcast and Faraday Technology Corporation, all of which operated profitably. Recently Farmer founded DSMB Technology, which develops a variety of video, audio, and communication products for specific clients. He holds two patents, one for a digital wireless communication system and the other related to the transmission of digital audio.

The training seminar, normally valued at $650, is being offered free to all AHECTA members and will cover a wide range of topics related to digital distribution and design, including digital off-air channels (8VSB), satellite channels (QPSK/8PSK), encoding digital channels, IP video, digital cable channels (QAM), digital-to-analog conversions, fiber optics, RF in coax distribution, and reference. During the show, Blonder Tongue will also raffle off an MTSA-PRO MPEG transport stream analyzer, worth $3,995. Video Equipment Rentals Improves Competitive Position by Installing Calrec Audio Consoles in Flypack Rental Units

First Rental in Service Now at 2014 French Open

HEBDEN BRIDGE, U.K. — May 29, 2014 — Global audio and video equipment rental company Video Equipment Rentals (VER) has added two Calrec Audio digital consoles into rental flypacks that will cover events worldwide, the first of which is the 2014 French Open tennis tournament happening now. The Calrec consoles will enable VER to compete more strongly for opportunities in the mid- to large-scale flypack rental market.

“Calrec is the standard for broadcasting events such as the French Open, so with Calrec consoles in our new flypacks, it will be much easier for us to book these types of shows,” said Steve Cormier, director of broadcast audio and communications at Video Equipment Rentals. “Calrec has a reputation in the market for reliability and sound quality, and the majority of mixers are familiar and comfortable with Calrec, especially in OB and flypack situations. If you’re supplying a system based on a Calrec console, it’s a clear indication of the quality that the entire system is going to have.”

VER has installed two 64-fader Artemis consoles into a flypack that has two identical control rooms. In terms of I/O, each console has two 32 x 32 analog Hydra2, two AES Hydra2, and two MADI Hydra2. The first rental customer, the Tennis Channel, is using the flypack to provide broadcast facilities at the French Open for some of the world’s largest sports broadcasters. The flypack can be configured differently for every event, but for the French Open, the system relies heavily on MADI, taking feeds from the host broadcaster, six announce booths covering multiple courts, a voice-over booth, multiple video playback sources, and more. The control rooms are being used by different broadcasters at different times, with varying numbers of audio and video inputs and outputs being utilized at any given point. The Artemis system’s 64-fader surface is large enough to handle any audio scenario the broadcasters might face.

Both of VER’s new Calrec consoles are in use at the French Open, but ownership of two consoles gives VER the future flexibility to rent out the consoles separately and cover two different events simultaneously in situations requiring only one console. In addition, VER will also be able to rent out the Hydra2 I/O boxes independently of the consoles, filling a need among existing Calrec owners for rental Hydra2 boxes to supplement their systems.
