Advancing the AoIP Migration With Greater RAVENNA/AES67 Support and Cloud-Based Codec Management

RAVENNA/AES67-Enabled Encoder Products
Digigram was among the first members of the RAVENNA consortium launched by ALC NetworX in 2010, and the company continues to expand its range of products with RAVENNA/AES67 connectivity. Enabling new levels of performance and flexibility in IP audio transport, RAVENNA is an AES67-compatible open technology standard that represents a major technological advance for low-latency synchronous audio distribution over IP infrastructures in radio facilities. At IBC2014, Digigram will showcase the addition of RAVENNA/AES67 connectivity to the company’s IQOYA range of audio-over-IP (AoIP) codecs, which now allow users to get audio programs directly from an in-studio RAVENNA network and subsequently encode and stream them over IP to transmitter sites via a WAN in compliance with EBU ACIP. Users likewise can decode EBU ACIP streams from a WAN to their in-studio RAVENNA network. With these capabilities, radio stations can easily migrate towards the use of IP audio within their studios.

LX-IP RAVENNA PCIe Sound Card — Now Shipping
The LX-IP RAVENNA PCIe sound card, the first RAVENNA-enabled product developed by Digigram, features ultra-low latency — down to one audio sample per IP packet — and up to 256 RAVENNA I/O channels from multiple RAVENNA streams. Ideal for high-density audio production or automation applications in radio and TV broadcast studios, this solution makes it easy for users to record and play as many as 128 audio-over-IP RAVENNA channels simultaneously in/out of a desktop computer. Boasting ultra-low, round-trip latency down to 3 ms, interoperability with all AES67 requirements, an embedded 128 x 128 switching matrix, Grandmaster PTP clock abilities, and high redundancy assured by two Gigabit Ethernet connections, this reliable hardware solution enables broadcasters to maintain high performance regardless of the computational load presented by other applications running on the host system.

New MADI Option on LX-IP RAVENNA PCIe Sound Card
With the addition of an optical MADI interface option to the company’s LX-IP RAVENNA PCIe sound card, Digigram enables the industry’s migration from synchronous audio (MADI) to IP audio (RAVENNA/AES67) in the studio environment. As a result, users can move from more expensive, less flexible proprietary equipment to standard commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) IT-based systems running common media-oriented IT protocols. The new MADI option facilitates a seamless shift by supporting use of the LX-IP RAVENNA soundcard in a synchronous audio environment to stream up to 64/64 I/O MADI channels from/to the host PC and from/to RAVENNA/AES67 audio-over-IP (AoIP) equipment. Users realize these valuable dual interface capabilities without any change to the familiar application used to manage the card. Control of the Digigram card is straightforward, thanks to its full compatibility with the industry-standard EMBER+ protocol.

New LX-MADI PCIe Sound Card
During IBC2014, Digigram will showcase the new LX-MADI PCIe sound card, designed to provide radio and television broadcasters with reliable multichannel synchronous audio PC connectivity in high-density audio production and automation applications. Equipped with an optical MADI interface, the card supports a 64/64 I/O channel count with low roundtrip latency down to 3 milliseconds. Embedded 64 x 64 routing gives users direct monitoring capabilities, along with record and play functions. Because the LX-MADI card is a hardware solution, it offers high stability regardless of the computational load presented by other applications — editing, processing, ingest, playout — being supported by the host system.

New Codec Fleet Manager Speeds and Simplifies Management of AoIP Contribution Codecs
Digigram presents the full release of the company’s new Codec Fleet Manager. The Web-based application, which can be hosted privately on any virtual machine or operated as SaaS in the cloud, enables structured management of all deployed audio-over-IP (AoIP) contribution codecs. Accessible from anywhere through the Web browser of Internet-connected devices such as PCs, tablets, and smartphones, the application automatically synchronizes phone books, connection profiles, and “favorite” groups of codecs to dramatically simplify deployment and day-to-day operation of the full codec fleet. The release of the Codec Fleet Manager is the first step in Digigram’s larger rollout of cloud-based AoIP solutions.

At IBC2014, MultiDyne(R) will demonstrate significant new features for its SilverBACK(TM) family of camera-mounted fiber transport solutions, including a new operator control panel that offers intuitive, user-friendly controls and displays.

The SilverBACK family now includes four models: the flagship SilverBACK-II; the SilverBACK-II-L for multicamera production; the SilverBACK-II 4K-L, a feature-rich model that includes Ethernet support and a video option for viewfinder or monitor viewing in the field, enabling camera operators to turn any 4K camera into a true Ultra HD multicamera production; and the SilverBACK II-4K, a low-cost model without the viewfinder/monitor viewing option, designed to support traditional film-style productions. Ultra HD support can be added to any existing SilverBACK system through a simple upgrade, enabling customers to deliver a state-of-the-art 4K television experience cost-effectively.

Utilizing MultiDyne’s award-winning SilverBACK solutions, users can seamlessly transmit any camera signal, including Ultra HD video, HD-SDI video, audio, intercom, control data, GPIOs, tally, and power, over a single hybrid copper and fiber cable. LightningSwitch Optical-to-Optical Routing Switch
Another key demonstration at IBC2014 will be the MultiDyne(R) LightningSwitch, a 48×48 optical-to-optical routing switch that simplifies the routing of fiber-optic signals within broadcast infrastructures by eliminating the need for fiber patch panels. LightningSwitch is perfect for a variety of applications, including broadcast and transmission facilities, sports venues, outside broadcast vehicles, cross-campus networks, postproduction, and satellite uplink management. It can be integrated seamlessly with existing routing infrastructures and standard broadcast architectures.

SMPTE-HUT Hybrid Universal Transceiver
The MultiDyne(R) SMPTE-HUT universal camera transceiver is now compatible with Sony’s HSC-100/300 family of camcorders and Panasonic’s AK-HC3800 line of professional studio cameras. Designed to increase the transmission distances of HD cameras that can be limited by hybrid copper/fiber cabling, this high-performance transport system is ideal for remote broadcasting, sports, shared control rooms, campus facilities, arenas, and stadium applications. The SMPTE-HUT cost-effectively enables full camera operation in even the most rugged broadcasting environments, extending transmission ranges up to 10 km on just two single-mode fibers.

Dingo(TM) Fiber Transport Card Line
At IBC2014 MultiDyne(R) will showcase the recently introduced Dingo(TM), a new fiber transport card set featuring a flexible, elegant design. Dingo supports a wide range of camera signals — 3G HD-SDI, composite video, analog or digital audio with cross-conversion, intercom, serial data, and Gigabit Ethernet — over a single fiber-optic cable. Available in three interoperable formats, Dingo brings unprecedented flexibility to all aspects of fiber transport, supporting multiple applications including broadcast, A/V, sports, OB, ENG, POV, and multicamera shoots.

Video Equipment Rentals Relies on BeckTV for Design and Build of Immense Flypack for 2014 French Open Coverage

Versatile New Rental Unit Supports up to Four Separate Broadcasts, Reconfigures Quickly to Meet Demands of Virtually Any User and Any Event

AUSTIN, Texas — July 10, 2014 — BeckTV, one of the United States’ premier design-build systems integrators, today announced that it provided design and integration services for the exceptionally versatile large-scale flypack created by Video Equipment Rentals (VER) to support broadcasters at the 2014 French Open tennis tournament. Providing a four control-room system with a centralized master control, the VER flypack supported simultaneous broadcast coverage by four different networks. The flexible modular design of the flypack and the quality of the systems integration will enable VER to meet the demands of the largest productions, or to split the system in half to support two different productions.

“The knowledge and experience that BeckTV brought to the table were invaluable in assuring smooth integration of equipment within this flypack, identifying all of the required elements, and packaging them in a way that minimizes the time and hassle of packing, shipping, and on-site setup,” said Howard Rosenthal, director of broadcast at Video Equipment Rentals. “With this massive yet agile flypack in our rental inventory, there isn’t a show in the world that we can’t do.”

BeckTV was responsible for nearly every aspect of the flypack, from the outer shell down to each one of the 4,000 cable connections within each of two racks. The company integrated and tested the system at its Austin, Texas, facility and then shipped it to VER’s Glendale, California, facility. There, with ongoing support from BeckTV engineers, VER staff completed the test and build, incorporating custom-built furniture and consoles designed to adapt easily to the way specific production teams prefer to work.

“As soon as we were awarded the French Open contract, we immediately contacted BeckTV,” added Rosenthal. “With their ability to offer so much knowledge about how different systems would play into the design we envisioned, we knew that engineers at BeckTV were the only real choice for this flypack design and build.”

Following its successful use at the 2014 French Open, the VER flypack will be used — whole or in part — for events including Wimbledon and for coverage of the Armed Forces Classic, a matchup of NCAA men’s basketball teams in Puerto Rico.

Thierry Gandilhon Joins NETIA as Managing Director
