Wohler Signs on to Digital Production Partnership Compliance Program

SAN FRANCISCO — June 26, 2014 – Wohler Technologies today announced that it is participating in the new compliance program created by the Digital Production Partnership (DPP), an industry collaboration that provides information and shares best practices to help producers and broadcasters maximize the potential of digital production. The DPP Compliance Program and subsequent guidelines are intended to help the industry identify trusted products for DPP standards across the U.K. and to speed up the successful implementation of the digital delivery process by ensuring files are compliant with DPP AS-11.

“Compliance with the DPP specification is becoming a critical part of operations for many content producers, and our goal is to enable customers to create DPP deliverables with efficiency and confidence,” said Craig Newbury, vice president of sales for Wohler. “To this end, our solution, powered by the RadiantGrid Intelligent Media Transformation Platform, automates the DPP compliance workflow entirely within the file-based domain, going beyond other solutions to include features such as automated content assembly and legalization. We’re pleased to be part of the new DPP Compliance Program and look forward to demonstrating how sophisticated yet cost-effective file-based processing can successfully speed and streamline the packaging and delivery of DPP-compliant content.”

Through the new DPP program, participating manufacturers will provide details of completed tests, the sample files produced, and evidence of the results obtained on file delivery or processing products that are in development or being marketed. The program aims to establish a minimum quality threshold that manufacturers’ tested products need to meet. The DPP protects the integrity of its standards through the DPP trademark, and it is collaborating with the Advanced Media Workflow Association (AMWA) to develop a certification scheme that would enable the use of the DPP and AMWA brands on complying manufacturers’ products and marketing materials.

DTV America Begins Rollout of Digital Alert Systems’ DASDEC EAS/CAP Units at Low-Power TV Sites

LYNDONVILLE, N.Y. — June 26, 2014 – Digital Alert Systems (DAS), a division of Monroe Electronics, today announced that DTV America is deploying DASDEC-II emergency messaging platforms at low-power TV (LPTV) sites across the United States. DTV America holds LPTV licenses in 80 markets, and it is rolling out the DAS units to realize technically advanced EAS/CAP capabilities while ensuring reliable centralized control of EAS units installed across DTV America sites.

“We are very happy with the performance of the DAS boxes, which offer a remarkably high degree of sophistication for LPTV operations, as well as the exceptionally proactive support we’ve received from the company,” said Kristina Bruni, vice president, compliance and engineering at DTV America. “This product is a perfect fit for our requirements, and because DAS already had proved the MPEG capabilities of the system and tested it thoroughly with our preferred multiplexer, installation and operation wound up being plug-and-play. Going forward with our system rollout, we can be confident that this robust system will meet our current and future EAS/CAP compliance needs.”

After finding that the devices first installed in its initial EAS/CAP deployments could neither provide an MPEG output nor support IP-based message aggregation, DTV America shifted gears and sought out a new EAS/CAP solution. The company then evaluated, purchased, and began deploying the DASDEC-II LPTV decoder with built-in radios (DASLPTVR) and integrated MPEG encoding online, and has plans for integrating this technology in multiple markets through 2015.

The network-centric DASLPTVR integrates three key features — monitoring radios, EAS decoder, and CAP decoder — into a single 2 RU box with a with a simple, secure browser-based interface and an architecture that supports simultaneous monitoring and user access with tiered security. The system’s internal triple tri-band (AM/FM/WX) high-performance receivers are fully adjustable via the web-browser user interface, and its optional four independent Ethernet ports enhance network performance by splitting network traffic among the ports. By presenting EAS text and audio as an MPEG stream for direct insertion into digital broadcast streams, the internal MPEG encoding option saves DTV America and others money and reduces the complexity of EAS/CAP compliance operations.

“As a rapidly growing owner and operator of LPTV stations at numerous geographically distributed sites, DTV America must have a full-featured EAS/CAP solution that enables scalable centralized control,” said Bill Robertson, vice president for business development at DAS. “We’re proud that the company has selected our DASDEC for its LPTV rollout, and we look forward to supporting DTV America as it continues to bring new broadcast sites online throughout the United States.”

BenQ Takes Home Two NewBay Media Best of Show InfoComm Awards

BenQ’s MW853UST Education Projector and BH380 Bar Display Recognized by AV Technology and Digital Signage

COSTA MESA, Calif. — June 25, 2014 — BenQ America Corp., an internationally renowned provider of visual display solutions, Classroom IQ innovations, and the No. 1-selling DLP(R) projector brand in North America(1), today announced that two of its solutions have been recognized with NewBay Media Best of Show Awards at InfoComm 2014 in Las Vegas. The MW853UST ultra short-throw projector and BH380 digital signage bar display were recognized by AV Technology magazine and Digital Signage magazine, respectively.

“These awards are a direct result of BenQ’s dedication to being an innovative provider of solutions for any space, be it the classroom, boardroom, or retail store,” said Bob Wudeck, Associate Vice President, Strategy and Business Development at BenQ America Corp. “We are delighted to receive this recognition from our respected peers in the industry and will continue to develop new solutions that put smart, collaborative products into the hands of students and professionals.”

BenQ’s ultra short-throw MW853UST projector featuring Colorific(TM) technology is designed specifically for the connected education sector, bringing enhanced interactivity to projection-based classrooms. To create larger-than-life lesson plans, the projector’s dual-screen capabilities can easily enlarge a learning space’s projection area, allowing up to four participants to collaborate simultaneously on screens as large as 190 inches. Easy to set up and install, the MW853UST features a wall-mount plate integrated directly onto the projector, 3D, PC, and Blu-ray(TM) readiness, and double 10W speakers — creating a complete multimedia solution that turns classrooms into collaborative and engaging learning spaces. The interactive solution also offers superior connectivity with ultra short-throw design and features auto-calibration for easy installation. The device allows teachers and students to interact using up to four PointWrite(TM) pens or via finger-touch technology for simple hands-on collaboration directly on the screen. The MW853UST’s 10,000:1 ultra-sharp contrast ratio, 3,200 ANSI lumens of brightness, and lamp life are enhanced by the SmartEco(TM) technology for long-lasting, reliable, and vibrant images.

Featuring BenQ’s exclusive Colorific technology to produce more than 1 billion life-like colors compared to only 16.7 million from most LCD projectors, the MW853UST combines up to seven different colors to create vibrant, true-to-life images, as opposed to the traditional three-color spectrum from LCD devices. The Colorific projector also delivers up to three times more contrast than similar top-selling LCD models for a brighter, more crisp viewing experience, as well as providing better picture quality over time since DLP displays do not experience light burn or color degradation after extended usage. As a result, educators and business professionals experience a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) over the life of their projector, resulting in reductions in maintenance and replacement costs, while ensuring that image quality always remains the same.

BenQ’s BH380 38-inch bar display enables ultra-widescreen 32:9 signage formats for public transit, restaurant menu boards, ticket kiosks, and more. VESA mountable, the panel can be easily installed and integrated with any existing systems or room configurations. The industrial grade panel is also LED backlit and features an incredible long-lasting backlight life of up to 50,000 hours — making the device ideal for long-term installations that require durability, energy efficiency, and low maintenance costs. The panel boasts a color TFT-LCD screen, 4000:1 native contrast ratio, 1920 x 540 resolution, and high 75-percent rate of uniformity.

An incredibly versatile digital signage solution, the space-saving BH380 features 1500 nits of ultra-high brightness and 176/176-degree wide viewing angles for increased visibility without any artifacts — resulting in impactful visual communication and anywhere/anytime information displays. The BH380 boasts an incredibly thin form factor and can be used in either portrait or landscape mode to facilitate compatibility with any environment or background, such as subway cars, take-out signage applications, and information kiosks. For full connection flexibility, the panel also accepts DVI and VGA signal interfaces and includes three USB ports to enable users to plug it directly into an existing system for even easier installation.

The awards were presented on the InfoComm show floor and were selected by panels of professional users and editors, as well as by judges’ inspection at the convention. Winners will be featured in a special Best of Show Awards Program Guide, distributed in digital edition form to readers of Sound & Video Contractor, AV Technology, Digital Signage, ProSound News, ProAudio Review, Mix, Music Festival Business, and Government Video after InfoComm 2014.

Riedel Communications has designed a radio communications solution for use across Glasgow and at the 14 venues hosting 17 different sporting competitions. Both the TETRA and MOTOTRBO systems are dedicated, fully monitored, and serviced solutions.

TETRA combines the advantages of analog trunked radio with those of digital mobile radio to provide optimal frequency usage, high transmission quality for speech and data, maximum security against eavesdropping, as well as flexible networking and connection management. Beyond that, the digital trunked radio system supports full duplex communication, GPS-positioning, and connection to the public telephone network. The system offers the option of operating different virtual channels, and it can leverage IP connectivity to support wide-area operation.

With this communications infrastructure, Riedel will ensure outdoor street-level coverage at all official venues, throughout the city of Glasgow, and along the official cycling road race and marathon routes, as well as indoor coverage at Glasgow 2014 competition venues. Riedel is also supplying the radio communications solution for the Scottish leg of the Queen’s Baton Relay, ensuring radio communications run smoothly as the baton makes its way through Scotland to Glasgow for the Games.

“We are delighted to be the Official Radio Communications Partner of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games,” said Christian Bockskopf, head of marketing for Riedel Communications. “We’ve worked closely with the organizers to develop a radio communications solution that satisfies both the technical and operational requirements of all the key players during this world-class event.”

NUGEN Audio Announces SEQ-S Spline and Match Equalizer

New Spline-Match EQ Offers Powerful Functionality for Music and Audio for Video Post-Production, Including Sonic Sculpting and Precision EQ Matching

LEEDS, U.K. — June 24, 2014 – NUGEN Audio, creator of intuitive tools for audio professionals, today announced the launch of SEQ-S, a high-fidelity, linear-phase equalizer (EQ) ideal for music production and mastering as well as film and post-production applications. With support for mono, stereo, 5.1, and 7.1 surround, SEQ-S provides sonic sculpting and precision EQ matching including stereo mid-side operation, automated spectrum analysis, curve smoothing, and a direct-draw spline interface for corrective applications.

“With SEQ-S, we’re providing the industry’s most advanced linear-phase spline-match EQ — enabling sound professionals to massage and correct any audio with incredible resolution and precision that is far beyond what’s possible with a traditional parametric interface,” said Jon Schorah, creative director, NUGEN Audio. “Unlike many digital EQs, SEQ-S features a phase profile that is linear across the frequency spectrum, which results in natural-sounding EQ changes and produces minimal phase artifacts. SEQ-S also includes a unique resolution setting that can be used with high precision in the low frequencies, allowing for highly transparent adjustments without muddying the mix.”

Through SEQ-S’s direct-draw interface and detailed spectrum analysis, users can quickly identify and specifically fine-tune their audio with ease. When coupled with EQ matching via sonic fingerprinting, the solution offers powerful creative possibilities for audio professionals. For instance, they can match one recording to another to capture the “flavor” of a piece of source audio and then transfer it to the current project — a technique that can be used on individual tracks to unify different takes and microphone positions.

In addition, SEQ-S’s EQ invert button provides a minimally invasive technique for creating space in a complex mix, a task that is typically too cumbersome with a traditional EQ. In a typical music project, by “sampling” the vocal and then using the EQ invert button to apply the inverted curve to the backing, users can gently create specific space without unnecessarily damaging the original tonality of the underlying audio.

SEQ-S is available now for the estimated retail price of $249. More information about SEQ-S and other NUGEN Audio products is available at www.nugenaudio.com.

This provides our clients with a simple disaster recovery option, safeguarding their precious assets and eliminating the need to invest in their own expensive archives,” said Kevin Shaw, lead technologist at BBC Studios and Post Production Digital Media Services. “In the case of larger customers that are looking to set up their own archives, we already offer a consulting service, and the addition of Front Porch Digital products broadens the scope of the advice and assistance we can offer them.”

The DIVArchive and DIVAdirector systems will store, or fully or partially restore, the DPP asset and check the integrity of any asset via checksum calculation and tracking. The systems will also speed up the workflow when content is being ingested for long-term archiving, eliminating the need to transfer or deliver large amounts of data to clients. The Digital Media Services business can now also offer migration to new formats as part of its services in order to future-proof clients’ assets.

DIVAdirector will allow the Digital Media Services team to create a consistent metadata database as a future resource while DIVArchive provides a cost-effective interim storage solution at very short notice. The investment fits with the company’s business model, providing the flexibility to scale up very quickly, from smaller projects involving a few film or tape assets to digitization of hundreds of thousands of tapes or full restoration of hundreds of hours of film.

“BBC Studios and Post Production’s Digital Media Services team is an award-winning resource in the U.K. for helping content owners conserve and maximize the value of their material,” said Rino Petricola, COO and general manager at Front Porch Digital. “It’s gratifying that Front Porch Digital systems will play a role in this important effort by further enhancing the one-stop digitization, transcoding, restoration, and secure archiving service the team already provides.”

Professional Bull Riders Choose LiGHTCuBE From MultiDyne for Fiber-Optic Field Transport

Rugged, High-Density MultiDyne Solution Supports up to 80 HD-SDI, SDI, or any Combination of Composite Video, Audio, Data, and PL, Over a Single Fiber-Optic Cable, Making it Perfect for ENG, Sports, and Announce-Booth Applications

LOCUST VALLEY, N.Y. — June 25, 2014 — MultiDyne(R), a leading provider of fiber-optic-based video and audio transport solutions for broadcast and pro A/V applications, today announced that Professional Bull Riders, Inc., (PBR) has chosen its LiGHTCuBE fiber-optic field transport system to broadcast their action packed bull riding events. Installed by ProVideo Systems, Inc. — a full-service professional video, television, and production equipment dealer and systems integrator — MultiDyne’s LiGHTCuBE is a fully customizable, rugged, and high-density solution that supports a wide range of signals, including composite, HD video, PL, IFB, audio, and more. Utilizing LiGHTCuBE, PBR can support up to 80 HD-SDI, SDI, or any combination of composite video, audio, data, and PL, over a single fiber-optic cable.

“PBR produces hundreds of events each year across the United States and around the globe, making it critical that we have a fiber-optic field transport solution that is dense, durable, compact, and easy to travel with,” said Dan Hickman, senior director of tour operations, Professional Bull Riders, Inc. “MultiDyne’s LiGHTCuBE supports a high signal count from a small, portable design that is tough in any environment. It’s perfect for our remote broadcast needs.”

ProVideo Systems, Inc. of Perrysburg, Ohio (www.provideosystems.com) provided integration, design, and consultation support for PBR. Kevin Olden, VP of engineering said, “When PBR needed a product for the ‘Toughest Sport on Dirt,’ I thought of MultiDyne. In Thackerville, Oklahoma, in temps of 115° F and above, the only cool air in the outdoor arena was coming from the back of the MultiDyne LiGHTCuBE!”

The LiGHTCuBE can be configured with DVI, RGB, and HDMI, enabling PBR to adapt to any signal environment. The powerful solution runs on 110/220 VAC power or batteries for field use. An Anton-Bauer or IDX mounting plate is included. Optical connectors include ST, SC, LC, TFOCA, PH, Tyco Expanded Beam, SMPTE, and Neutrik opticalCON.

Test and monitoring features make the LiGHTCuBE especially effective for in-the-field signal monitoring. With an HD monitor and signal generator on either end of the product, PBR can test the circuit even if the camera has not arrived. The HD test signal generator option also allows PBR to send the test pattern down the line, or to send the signal from the studio end directly to the LiGHTCuBE, to monitor the camera output and the signals arriving at the shoot.

Measuring at 14-inches cubed, the LiGHTCuBE is compact and portable enough for sports and ENG applications, announce-booth settings, and any field application where signal density is important. Carry handles allow grab-and-go access for remote or on-location productions. A weather resistant cover is available for extra protection. The LiGHTCuBE is compatible with all MultiDyne fiber-optic field transport solutions and is manufactured in the USA.

“When broadcasting from a sports arena, there are obvious environmental factors like weather, dirt, and debris that necessitate rugged equipment,” said Frank Jachetta, president at MultiDyne. “MultiDyne is well-known in the industry for developing fiber-optic transport equipment built to withstand any operating condition. That ruggedness, combined with portability, a high signal count, and advanced test and monitoring features make LiGHTCuBE the best fit for the Professional Bull Riders’ broadcast requirements.”
