Optocore Delivers Quality Sound Over Long Distances for CheongShim Peace World Center

Fiber Transport System Boasts Superior Audio, Reliability and Cost-Effectiveness as Key Benefits

GAPYEONG, SOUTH KOREA, DECEMBER 3, 2013 — When the CheongShim Peace World Center first opened in late 2011, the AV technology team knew that the vast size of the arena (it seats up to 25,000 people) would dictate the type of audio and data transport system that would support it. Traditional analog lines were just not going to cut it. Instead, the team turned to Optocore, the leading provider of scalable, high-bandwidth, low-latency fiber-optic networks for the transmission of audio, video and data in a variety of markets, for its fiber transport technology.

Located just over 21 miles outside of Seoul in the Gapyeong District in South Korea’s Kyunggi province, CheongShim Peace World Center is owned by Unification Church (also known as Moonism) and is the largest multipurpose hall in the area, to date. The approximately 1,367-square-foot (127 meter) steel-frame structure boasts a 29 ½ foot (9 meter) high arena that is generally used for various activities by the Unification Church’s general assembly, as well as for corporate events, concerts, plays or CF (commercial) shooting. Paired with Yamaha gear, the recently installed Optocore fiber system is just what was needed to properly transmit audio digitally from the microphones to the Front of House (FOH) and the PA system to its large constituency. Without it, the size of the venue would be just too big to transmit microphone signals over analog lines.

“We chose the Optocore system for its reliable optical transmission system, in order to ensure the audio would be heard throughout our large arena,” says Kim Hanchoon, audio/video technical director, CheongShim Peace World Center. “Traditional cabling was just not going to be reliable enough and while Optocore is still a rather new technology to many here in South Korea, we were happy to expose the team to Optocore’s fiber optic transmission method and all of the benefits that can be reaped from it.”

The equipment has been installed to support Front of House (FOH) as well as the sound control room. The Optocore DD32E system consists of three X6P-16IN units in the stage rack, each with 48 channels of analog mic inputs to digital and one X6-16OUT with 16 channel digital to analog converter. In addition, the DD32E provides AES/EBU feeds to the system’s loudspeaker DSP controllers at the main mix position, with a Yamaha PM5D mixing console loaded with one Optocore YG2 fiber optic card and two additional Optocore YS2 Slave cards that allow for up to 48 inputs and outputs to/from the Optocore network to the mixing console, as well as control of the X6 Optocore microphone preamps.

In the sound control room there is a Yamaha DM2000VCM mixing console loaded with an Optocore YG2 fiber optic card and two Optocore YS2 Slave cards that allow for up to 48 inputs and outputs to/from the Optocore network to the mixing console as well as control of the X6 Optocore microphone preamps. Rounding out the system, the technical team uses speakers and a speaker control unit from Meyer Sound.

Of the many benefits that the Optocore system has provided to the church, three stand outs for Hanchoon include sound quality, console connectivity and long-distance transmission.

“Having the Optocore system in place enables us to transmit signals by a fiber optic cable without noise or any audio loss,” he explains. “When our audio is passing through small outputs such as at the microphone level, there is no noise to distract our constituents; they are hearing the sermon, loud and clear, which is something that’s very important to us. In addition, it’s easy to control the Optocore system with the touch of a button on the console, while it also can handle the user to patch in all 48 channels, easily configuring the control layers.”

Finally, Hanchoon says he is pleased with the long-distance capabilities that fiber optic transmission has afforded to the church.

“It’s often the case when using a multi-cable setup for a long distance signal, that there might be a loss of signal transmission caused by the circuit size that is over 200 meters, such as in our case,” he says. “By utilizing Optocore and fiber optics instead, we can overcome the distance barriers, ensuring smooth, reliable transport every time.”

“We are so pleased to provide such a complete solution to the A/V team at CheongShim World Peace Center,” says Tine Helme, director, Optocore. “The fact that our system can be used in three ways—as an electrical transmission system by multi-cable (analog), signal transmission of console and stage box (using PM5D and DSP50) by UTP cable, as well as optic transmission—is further proof of the unprecedented benefits that fiber transport can bring to even the most challenging of situations, such as CheongShim’s large venue.”

Masque Sound Celebrates the Spirit of the Holiday Season with Christmas Live! 2013 at GraceWay Bible Church

As GraceWay Bible Church gets ready to stage its annual holiday program, Christmas Live!, Masque Sound, a leading theatrical sound reinforcement, installation and design company, returns with a custom audio equipment package to support Sound Designer Nathan Schmalbach and Technical Director Kevin Webb’s production.

Now in its fifth year, Christmas Live! is an immersive experience transporting visitors back 2,000 years to the very first Christmas. An hour-long guided walking tour, it features 11 interactive scenes with actors and animals located in and around the church grounds. The cast and crew total 300 people, with 15 involved directly in its technical aspects.

This is Masque Sound’s third year providing rental gear for Christmas Live!. As the program has grown over the past three years, so has the company’s support. In 2011, Masque Sound supplied a large wireless rig to distribute audio throughout the show. Last year, the rental package grew to include a semi-centralized system, and this year, Masque Sound provided a system that will allow the entire program to be centralized.

“Our goal over the past few years has been to centralize all of the controls for the entire program, which is no easy task when you are talking about remotely mixing and controlling 11 different shows, all of which are active at the same time,” says Schmalbach. “We have been working with Masque Sound for months to make sure we have the necessary equipment to execute this. It’s been a challenge, but Masque Sound has done a great job in giving us the gear and support to make our vision a reality.”

In order to mix the show from one central point, Schmalbach and his team will utilize a binaural audio (3D Audio) remote listening system. The system is composed of AKG C414 B-ULS and Earthworks M30 microphones, Genelec 1032A and 8030A monitors, XTA DP448s and Meyer Sound Galileo 616s for processing, XTA DS8000/D splitters, Rational Acoustics Smaart software and a Midas Venice 240 console. Audio is distributed from the control center with a Riedel RockNet 300 digital audio network. The speaker package consists of L-Acoustics MTD108As, 115XTs, SB218 and dB-SUB subwoofers, and Meyer Sound UPM-1Ps, UPA-1Ps and UPJ-1Ps. All of the L-Acoustics speakers are powered via Lab.gruppen fP Series amplifiers.

Figure53 QLab software running on Mac Minis with RME Fireface 800 interfaces handles the show’s effects and music playback. Masque Sound also provided a large wireless rig consisting of a Sennheiser 2000 Series 24-channel kit. To accompany the Sennheiser wireless package, Masque Sound supplied four Domed Helical Antennas from its sister company, Professional Wireless Systems (PWS).

“Masque Sound is always there for whatever we need. The program would not be as technically advanced as it is without their first-class equipment and support,” adds Schmalbach. “They do a wonderful job, and we can’t imagine working with anyone else.”

Christmas Live! will take place Friday, December 6 and Friday, December 13, starting at 5:30 p.m., and Sunday, December 8 and Sunday, December 15, starting at 4:30 p.m. For more information and to get free tickets, visit www.gracewaybc.org.

The Center for Discovery Finds the Right Solution with Masque Sound’s Custom Audio Equipment Upgrade

Flexible System Expands Theatrical Capabilities of Michael Ritchie Big Barn Center

HURLEYVILLE, NY, NOVEMBER 25, 2013 — Masque Sound, a leading theatrical sound reinforcement, installation and design company, recently provided a complete custom audio equipment upgrade solution for the Michael Ritchie Big Barn Center for Environmental Health and Education at The Center for Discovery. These new audio capabilities will now allow the Center, an organization renowned for the educational, clinical, residential, social and creative arts experiences it provides to children and adults with significant intellectual disabilities and medical frailties, to be able to offer even more events and activities.

“The Center for Discovery wanted to be able to put on more theatrical productions, as well as host movie nights and other events at the Big Barn Center, and felt it needed a more flexible sound system that could handle all that,” says Sound Designer Gabriel Bennett. “I have a familiarity and comfort level with Masque Sound and knew it was the right company for the job. Fortunately we were able to make it happen.”

Bennett’s goal in designing the sound system upgrade was to disperse the sound more evenly and ensure full coverage throughout the room, as well as provide surround sound capabilities. According to Bennett, “We sourced some gear that was higher quality and more on the professional end of things as opposed to the consumer gear the Big Barn Center had previously been using. We really wanted to maintain a high level of fidelity while also providing a level of versatility the Center previously did not have. There is now a main, left, center, right that allows for this. Also, we can now tune the room according to the event and it sounds great.”

Bennett’s biggest challenge with the project, and one that Masque Sound proved extremely helpful with, was the Center’s desire to put in a more permanent solution. The Center wanted to install permanent gear and cable runs. They also wanted to run isolated audio power for the speakers and console.

“Because there was no theatrical rigging or structure already in place, things such as tilting and refocusing the speakers without moving them, based on the needs of the room were difficult,” adds Bennett. “Masque Sound’s technical support proved really helpful in overcoming this and any other issues we had.”

At the heart of the new system is an Avid Venue SC48 digital console, a fully integrated solution that combines all I/O, digital signal processing and tactile control into a single console, making it an affordable and flexible live system choice. In addition, an XTA DP448 speaker management system was supplied. Meyer Sound also contributed a selection of speakers, including UPA-1Ps and UPA 500-HP subwoofers. The Sennheiser 2000 series wireless mic system, a selection of Shure microphones and ancillary equipment completed the upgrade.

“Masque Sound was really helpful in providing audio gear that not only served our purpose, but provided the fidelity we were looking for as well,” says Bennett. “The audio solutions that Masque Sound created for us kept us within budget without compromising the quality of the gear. Overall, we are very happy with the system.”

The Center for Discovery’s unique philosophy of creating challenging, accessible, healthy, loving, supportive and homelike educational and work settings, in which children and adults can develop relationships, learn and grow, and foster new social and artistic skills, helps distinguish the venue from like-minded establishments. The agency’s mission is to enrich the lives of individuals and their families by offering innovative educational and social experiences.

DPA Microphones Creates a Bang with Paramore During Band’s 2013 World Tour

FOH engineer credits the d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Mic and
d:dicate™ 2011C Compact Cardioid Mic with delivering ideal percussion sound

FRANKLIN, TENNESSEE, NOVEMBER 25, 2013DPA Microphones is drumming up some attention while on the road with the Grammy nominated alternative rock band Paramore for the band’s self-titled world tour. DPA’s d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones and d:dicate™ 2011C Compact Cardioid Microphones are keeping Paramore’s touring drummer in beat with band mates and fans by delivering clean, clear and precise percussion. Equipped with universal mounts, these mics ensure that every stop on the band’s self-titled international tour features the natural sound of each percussion instrument.

Eddie Mapp, Paramore’s front-of-house Engineer, chose the microphones to help provide the band and audiences alike with optimal sound. Mapp has been using the d:votes on his acoustic guitar in the studio for quite some time, but received a tip to try them out on the drum kits from Metallica’s front-of-house engineer Mick “Big Mick” Hughes, who had recently made the switch to DPA for Metallica’s last tour and accompanying movie release. Now a staple for both engineers’ rigs, the duo considers the mics to be a recently uncovered industry secret, that Mapp has since been sharing, that provides the ultimate in natural drum sounds.

“I run into a lot of other engineers who are curious as to what I have been using to mic snare drums,” says Mapp. “Mick learned about DPA Microphones from the production engineers working on Metallica’s 3D movie. He suggested I check them out – so I did. The first chance I had to try them on the drums was when I joined Paramore on tour in February. The band members were used to a specific sound from their mics, so I tried not to change it too much. The only change I have made so far is to use the d:votes and 2011Cs for the drum kit, and everyone loves it. We’ve done a lot of different press and promotions around the world and every engineer who hears the band is always instantly impressed with how natural the sound is from the drums.”

In addition to the clarity, the ease of setup is highly regarded by Mapp, who depends on DPA’s universal mount to customize Paramore’s sound. Mapp attaches several d:vote microphones to the stand below each crash and ride cymbal, as well as another for hi-hat. He also relies on the d:vote to mic underneath the snare and a DPA 2011C for close-miking the snare top. The simplicity of this setup, along with the assurance of the most concise sound possible, makes Mapp’s job easier.

“I just find that it is really easy to fit the snare drum with a DPA mic wherever you need it in the mix, as opposed to some mics from other manufacturers,” he continues. “I was blown away the first time I put the d:vote on the snare. It is my favorite snare microphone that I have ever had. As for the cymbals, I’ve done spot mics for many years and the d:vote is very impressive. Other microphones that I have tried end up rolling the sound off prematurely, but with DPA it extends that high sound.”
Designed for use in touring applications, the d:vote is a highly durable microphone available for use across several musical applications. The versatility and mounting options of the d:vote allow it to be effortlessly unclipped and repositioned for the most accurate positioning.

“The d:votes’ tiny cables make it look fragile, but we haven’t had a single issue,” says Mapp. “I hope to use more of DPA’s microphones in the future. I’ve heard the 2011C is phenomenal on guitar; I just haven’t had the opportunity to try that yet.”

An engineer for nearly 15 years, Mapp has spent the majority of his career providing front-of-house support for the American rock band Evanescence. He has also toured with Papa Roach, Taking Back Sunday, Stone Temple Pilots, Zakk Wylde and more.

Paramore is currently on an international, 110 stop tour to support the band’s fourth, self-titled release Paramore (2013). Lead by singer Hayley Williams, Jeremy Davis (bass guitar) and Taylor York (lead guitar), the tour also features Jon Howard (rhythm guitar, piano and backing vocals), and Justin York (guitar). Paramore will continue to tour in 2014 throughout North America, joined by Metric and Hellogoodbye as opening acts. The band also has two special performances planned onboard the Norwegian Pearl as part of the PARAHOY! Cruise in March 2014, for which the group and its fans will sail from Miami to Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas.

Cerwin-Vega! P-Series Provides Smashing Sound Quality for the Acclaimed Fonogenic Studios

Powerful Speakers Produce the Perfect Punch for Popular Recording Studio

VAN NUYS, CALIFORNIA — Fonogenic Studios, a renowned recording studio and live music venue located in the heart of the San Fernando Valley, recently upgraded its sound system with Cerwin-Vega!®’s new P-Series Professional PA system and classic CVA Active Series Speakers. With constant compliments from both A-list musicians and audiences about the superior sound quality of the live venue, the studio’s owners and engineers are thrilled with the audio and the reactions.

Rami Jaffee, who is a founding member of the Grammy-winning rock band The Wallflowers and now keyboardist for the Foo Fighters, owns the studio with music producer Ran Pink, who has produced for PiNk & NoSeWoRthY and has composed for TV shows such as Happily Divorced and The Fran Drescher Tawk Show. Together, they operate half of the building as a recording studio and the other half, which features a big sound stage, as a live performance space.

“We’ve hosted crazy parties, with performances by big-name musicians, ever since our launch,” says Jaffee. “Now, we’ve been doing it more frequently, with parties every two weeks. We even live-stream the concerts to the web. We wanted Fonogenic to be an environment where artists felt comfortable emotionally investing in their music. We’re a family here and we want our clients to feel like this is their home too. We want it to be a creative haven for them. They shouldn’t have to worry about the sound quality we’re providing them.”

To ensure adequate sound coverage at the space, Jaffee and Pink hung four Cerwin-Vega! P-Series P1500X speakers from the ceiling and positioned two additional speakers as center-stage monitors. The setup was completed with CVA-118 subs for front-of-house and CVA-115 subs for the drums.

“When we compare our previous arrangement to our P-Series setup, it’s like night and day,” says Pink. “Getting the levels of the vocals and of the mixes of the music just right used to be a challenge for us because of the elongated shape of the room. But now, since we deadened the room and installed the larger P-Series system, we’ve had no problems.”

Fonogenic Studios visitors, including top-notch producers and such renowned musicians as Stevie Wonder, often remark on the space’s flawless sound quality, which Jaffee and Pink attribute to Cerwin-Vega!. “It’s just such a great feeling to hear all these music heroes mention how incredible the sound is right from the get-go,” continues Pink. “That’s the most satisfying feeling you can get, and it’s thanks to the P-Series.”

“Ross Hogarth, one of the biggest producers of our time, watched a band here at one of our events, and said the sound was just superb,” adds Jaffee. “And Foo Fighters guitarist Chris Shiflett had his side project band play one of our parties. He said he’d never heard stage sound that amazing in his entire life. In fact, when artists play at our venue now, they worry about living up to the sound quality, because it reflects the true sound of their music.”

A sound system that boasts exceptional clarity, the Cerwin-Vega! P-Series delivers a new standard in power and bass punch for superior sound quality suited to any sound reinforcement application. The P1500X speaker is the most powerful PA product in its price class, employing a 15-inch woofer and high-frequency compression driver, powered by a custom 1500W Class-D amp. Overall, the compact size and incomparable clarity of the P-Series speakers make them perfect for everything from permanent installations to on-the-go rehearsals. In fact, Jaffee himself trusts the speakers so much that he even takes them on the road with him. Additionally, the CVA Active Series Speakers deliver tremendous power output and exceptional full-frequency response. The striking aluminum grills on the subwoofers minimize power compression and optimize driver performance.

Jaffee and Pink started Fonogenic Studios six years ago as a place for world-renowned musicians to record their albums, rehearse and perform live sets. In addition to Wonder, Shiflett and Hogarth, Fonogenic has also hosted artists such as Allan Parsons and Minnie Driver, as well as The Foo Fighters and The Wallflowers band members. As part of their plans to generate further interest in the studio, Jaffee and Pink are launching a YouTube channel to share with the world Fonogenic Studios’ live performances and the incredible impact that the P-Series has on the venue’s sound system. For more information, visit www.fonogenic.com.
A video tour of the venue can be found on the studio’s YouTube page: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEKOC8TmkUA.

RTW Provides Audio Loudness Management to Astro Productions

Top Asian Broadcaster Utilizes TM7 During Transition to Unified Metering

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA, NOVEMBER 25 2013 – RTW, a leading vendor of visual audio meters for professional broadcast, production, post production and quality control, is pleased to announce the sale of eight RTW TM7 TouchMonitors to Astro Production Sdn. Bhd., a leading Asian broadcaster. The TM7s were equipped with several software modules, including: the SW20001, SW20002, SW20004, SW20005 and SW20006 units. Stagetec Asia (www.stagetecasia.com), a long-time distributor of RTW, coordinated the sale.

Audio loudness standards have been a key concern for many broadcasters worldwide. That being said, the company sought a new tool that would help it to monitor its audio levels consistently. Astro purchased the TM7 TouchMonitors, provided by Stagetec Asia, after demoing a few of the units during its live broadcasts. The company will use them to ensure that all of its production facilities, including its fleet of OB vans, are using the metering and analyzers to have uniform loudness levels across its facility.

“The TM7 TouchMonitor suits our applications very well,” says Dennis Dovale, Vice President, Astro Production Services. “In order to ensure that all personnel and operators have the same frequency, when talking about the audio loudness metering and reading, they need a good monitoring tool such as RTW’s TM7.”

RTW, meanwhile, is thrilled to make further inroads into the Asian market with this sale. “We are happy to support such a prominent broadcaster as Astro,” says Andreas Tweitmann, CEO, RTW. “The entire line of TouchMonitor audio meters was created to help engineers monitor their loudness levels easily and consistently. The fact that Astro has found our TM7 to be efficient and easy to use is further proof of RTW’s commitment to offering modern, innovative solutions for today’s loudness management issues.”
